Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]

Yan Cijin placed two fingers on the seal and released a gentle flow of energy. The clear resin did not melt or crack. Instead, the small symbols lit in sequence and loosened their hold on the scroll. She lifted the paper carefully, and the two women leaned over it together.

The writing began with a description of the mortal realms, then moved into a passage about the Heavenly Dao Sovereign Realm. It stated that a sovereign had brought the body, inner energy, and martial intent to a level at which ordinary limitations no longer defined them. However, the final boundary was not simply another wall waiting to be broken. It marked the place where a practitioner had to decide whether to carry the shape of her own path forward or abandon it in the hope of becoming something greater.

The scroll referred to two possible responses. One was to continue cultivating within the mortal world, refining the arts already mastered and using one’s strength to protect or govern as one chose. The other was to attempt the final passage into a realm the patriarch called the Immortal Ascendant Realm. The wording did not make the second path sound morally superior. It offered no promise that those who ascended would become wiser, kinder, or happier. It was simply another way forward, one that carried a price: leaving behind the ordinary world and its cycle of mortal life.

Bai Li read the last portion twice. ”So the cave does not promise us anything.”

”No,” Yan Cijin said. ”It shows us a choice.”

”And it expects us to understand what we are choosing.”

”That seems fair.”

Bai Li looked at the scroll, then at the shelves surrounding them. She thought of the old patriarch spending years on a question he had not been able to answer. She thought of the people whose names were recorded in the archive, people who had lived, trained, failed, learned, and eventually become memories preserved on stone. The world beyond the mortal summit might be real, but the life they had already built was real too. No unknown realm could make that life meaningless.

Yan Cijin reached for her hand. ”We do not have to decide today.”

”I know.”

”And we do not have to decide because an ancient cave has opened its doors.”

”I know that too.”

Yan Cijin watched her closely. ”You are thinking about it very seriously.”

”I would be a poor wife if I did not.”

She said it so naturally that Yan Cijin’s teasing expression faded into something softer. She moved closer, resting her forehead briefly against Bai Li’s shoulder. The gesture was quiet and unremarkable, but it carried the trust that had shaped their marriage. They were standing in a place built by someone who had hoped to discover what lay beyond the highest known realm, and they had been given the chance to continue that search. Whatever they decided, they would make the choice with their eyes open.

Bai Li pressed a kiss to Yan Cijin’s hair. ”We should see what the rest of the cave holds before we make any grand decisions.”

”Agreed.” Yan Cijin lifted her head. ”And if the next chamber contains another scroll, I reserve the right to complain.”

”You may complain. You may not throw it at me.”

”I have never thrown a scroll at you.”

”You threatened to.”

”That is entirely different.”

Bai Li laughed quietly, and the sound filled the old archive with a warmth that seemed out of place among the silent shelves. They set the scroll back into its protective sleeve, marked the table so they could find it again, and continued toward the far door. It was a narrow opening concealed behind a panel of stone. No handle or hinge was visible, only a shallow circular depression at its center. When Bai Li approached, the depression filled with silver light, and a soft vibration passed through the floor.

Yan Cijin looked at the symbol, then at her wife. ”Another door that wants us to hold hands?”

”Perhaps it has good taste.”

She offered her hand. Yan Cijin took it, and they placed their joined palms against the stone. The door opened without a sound. On the other side was a long, dark hall whose floor shone like water beneath the moon. Along both walls stood mirrors set into frames of pale stone. Some were tall and narrow, while others were nearly circular. Each reflected the two women from a slightly different angle, and in some of the reflections the light seemed to come from a place that did not exist in the hall itself.

Bai Li’s smile faded as she studied the first mirror. It reflected the room behind them accurately, but the reflection of the doorway showed a stretch of sky instead of the archive. In another mirror, Yan Cijin’s cloak moved though the air around her was still. A third reflected their hands clasped together, yet the image showed a faint silver line running between their fingers.

”Careful,” Bai Li said.

Yan Cijin squeezed her hand. ”I am.”

They entered the hall together. Behind them, the archive door closed softly, but neither woman turned in alarm. The path back remained clear in their spiritual senses, and the formation had not forced them deeper. Ahead, the line of mirrors stretched toward a circular chamber filled with a pale glow. They moved slowly, watching the reflections without allowing curiosity to draw them out of step.

At the end of the hall, the mirrors gave way to a vast circular room. Its floor was dark and polished, reflecting the silver light above it as clearly as a still pond. At the center stood a low stone platform surrounded by twelve narrow pillars. Each pillar was carved in the shape of a sword, its point facing upward, and fine lines ran from one pillar to the next beneath the floor’s glossy surface. Above the platform, a column of light reached toward a ceiling that seemed to hold a whole night sky, complete with stars that did not match any constellation either woman had seen.

Yan Cijin looked up for a long time. ”This is beautiful.”

”It is also probably dangerous.”

”Those things are not mutually exclusive.”

”No, they are not.” Bai Li studied the pillars. ”Stay close. We do not touch anything until we understand what it does.”

Yan Cijin smiled at her. ”I am beginning to think you enjoy saying that.”

”I enjoy keeping you safe.”

”I know.” Her smile softened. ”And I enjoy watching you pretend that you are not worried.”

”I am not worried.”

”Then you will not mind if I kiss you.”

Bai Li turned toward her, and Yan Cijin kissed her before she could answer. It was brief and familiar, a small interruption that belonged more to their private life than to the ancient hall. When they separated, Bai Li’s expression had warmed in spite of herself.

”You are a distraction,” she said.

”Only to you.”

”Fortunately, you are the only person allowed to be.”

Yan Cijin looked pleased with that answer, then turned back toward the platform. The mirrors along the walls began to brighten one after another. Light ran through the floor’s hidden lines, circling the twelve pillars until the entire room appeared to be connected by a web of silver threads. A faint sound rose from the platform, like wind passing through a narrow valley.

The cave had noticed them.

Bai Li and Yan Cijin stood side by side, their hands still joined, and waited to discover what it intended to show them.

The light moved from pillar to pillar until every sword-shaped stone shone with a faint silver edge. The reflections in the walls shifted. Bai Li saw herself standing in a place much like the chamber, except that her robe was darker and her sword seemed to hold a line of light along its length. Yan Cijin saw a version of herself with her hair unbound, standing beneath a sky full of stars. Neither reflection moved exactly when its real counterpart moved. They were a breath behind, like memories trying to decide whether they belonged to the present.

Bai Li watched the nearest mirror as its surface rippled. The silver lines beneath her feet lit up and formed a circle around the platform. Nothing attacked them. No voice thundered from the ceiling. There was no warning that they had crossed a boundary or that they must solve a riddle before they could proceed. Instead, the room seemed to be waiting for them to look at what it had placed before them. That quietness was more unsettling than an obvious threat would have been. A threat could be measured. A sword could be drawn against it. A mysterious room that simply waited for you to understand something was far harder to deal with.

Yan Cijin raised her free hand and let a thin thread of spiritual energy move toward the nearest mirror. The energy touched its surface and vanished without resistance. The mirror brightened, and the room around her changed.

She was still standing on the platform, but the hall had widened until it seemed large enough to contain a city. Above her stretched a palace of white stone, its roofs shining beneath a sky filled with brilliant stars. Long stairs led to a vast throne, and every step of the staircase was crowded with immortals dressed in flowing robes. Their faces were beautiful and calm, their eyes lowered in respect. As Yan Cijin looked at them, she felt the weight of their admiration. They knew her name, her accomplishments, and the strength she had cultivated throughout her life. They had gathered to welcome her into a place among the highest powers of the heavens.

The feeling was seductive, and she was honest enough with herself to admit it. She had worked hard for every advance in her cultivation. She had spent long nights studying, training until her muscles trembled, and testing her techniques against opponents who could have killed her if she had made a single careless mistake. She had earned her place in the mortal world through effort and judgment. There was nothing shameful about wanting to see what lay beyond it. The palace offered knowledge, new methods of cultivation, and the chance to understand principles that had remained hidden for centuries. It was not a childish fantasy of being praised. It was a vision of genuine possibility.

Yet as she looked more closely at the palace, she began to notice what was missing. The halls were immense, the gardens were filled with rare flowers, and every person she passed bowed with perfect respect. But no familiar voice called to her from a doorway. No tall woman stood at the edge of the steps with a dark sword at her waist and a quiet look that could cut through any ceremony. There was no Bai Li waiting beside her, no hand she could take, no private glance that meant more than all the praise in the palace.

A voice came from the high throne. It was not cruel. It did not threaten her or accuse her of weakness. It simply explained that the highest realm required a practitioner to release attachment to the mortal world. A person who had truly reached the end of the road could not remain tied to ordinary relationships, duties, or memories. The palace was hers if she accepted that truth. She could become greater than she had ever imagined, and nothing would stand between her and the knowledge she desired.

Yan Cijin stood quietly while the words settled around her. She understood why the illusion had taken this shape. It had not offered her a pile of gold or an empty title. It had offered her the very things she found meaningful: mastery, knowledge, and the opportunity to continue growing. Then it had placed a price on them and expected her to believe that the price was necessary.
