Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]

Lu Wenshu gave a small nod. It was the answer she had hoped to hear. When people encountered something extraordinary, they often returned with a story already shaped around their wishes. These two would rather admit that they did not know than pretend that a possible answer had become certain simply because it sounded impressive.

The Matriarchs described the journey from the old practice ground to the concealed entrance. They explained how the twelve symbols had responded when they touched them together, how the archive had preserved records that should have decayed, and how the mirrors had shown them separate visions. They did not reveal every private detail of those visions. Such details belonged to the two of them, and the cave’s lesson did not require them to display their marriage for the council’s inspection. They shared the parts that mattered to the investigation: the chamber appeared to test a practitioner’s understanding of her own will, and the final passage could not be reached by strength alone.

When Yan Cijin explained that the cave described the Immortal Ascendant Realm as a possible path beyond the Heavenly Dao Sovereign Realm, the main hall fell completely silent. Even the elders who had spent their lives studying old cultivation records looked unsettled. The Heavenly Dao Sovereign Realm was not merely a title. It was the highest point their world acknowledged, the boundary beyond which ordinary methods no longer offered a reliable guide. Many masters had devoted their lives to reaching it and failed. Few had believed there could be another stage beyond it, and those who did were usually dismissed as dreamers.

Lu Wenshu took a long breath. ”The inscription says this is possible, not guaranteed.”

”Correct,” Bai Li said. ”We did not find a method that ensures success. We found a place built by someone who wanted future practitioners to consider the possibility.”

”And the visions?” asked one of the record keepers. ”Did the cave show you what would happen if you attempted the breakthrough?”

”No,” Yan Cijin replied. ”It showed us what it believed might persuade us. That is not the same thing.”

She explained that the illusions had offered them lives built around power and attainment, then suggested that such lives required them to discard everything that did not serve those aims. The lesson was not that strength or ambition had no value. It was that no single goal could claim every part of a person’s life without leaving something essential behind. The cave had not told them what choice to make. It had forced them to look at the choices they might make and decide whether those choices reflected their own understanding.

One elder rubbed his chin thoughtfully. ”If the place reacts to two people with compatible energies, could it be dangerous to allow others inside?”

”We should not send anyone into it until we understand more,” Bai Li said. ”The formation responded to our cultivation, but that does not mean it will respond safely to another person. For now, the entrance remains restricted. The archive should be studied only by people we trust, and nothing inside should be moved without a clear record of where it was found.”

Yan Cijin added that the old materials might provide useful information about Mount Hua’s history even if the final breakthrough was never attempted. The records of herbs, roads, techniques, and earlier disasters could help the sect avoid repeating past mistakes. She recommended that a small group of scholars be assigned to translate the inscriptions and compare them with other documents, while the main body of the sect continued its ordinary work.

The elders agreed. Several questions remained unanswered, but the outline of a sensible plan had begun to take shape. No one would be permitted to spread exaggerated rumors among the disciples. The restricted peak would remain closed except to those directly involved in the investigation. The sect’s outer defenses would be checked, not because anyone had found evidence of an approaching threat, but because a major spiritual disturbance was reason enough to review existing precautions.

When the formal discussion ended, the elders lingered to speak privately with the Matriarchs. Some were visibly excited by the possibility that Mount Hua’s traditions might lead beyond the mortal world. Others looked troubled by the thought that Bai Li and Yan Cijin might eventually leave. One elder, who had trained under Bai Li for nearly two decades, tried to hide his concern by asking whether the matter could be postponed until after the spring disciples’ examinations.

Bai Li understood what he was really asking. ”We have not decided to leave.”

”But the possibility exists.”

”Yes.”

The elder lowered his eyes. ”Mount Hua has relied on both of you for a very long time.”

Yan Cijin answered before Bai Li could. ”And we have relied on Mount Hua. That is why we will not make this decision carelessly. Whatever we do, we will ensure that the sect is ready.”

The elder bowed again. He looked relieved, though not entirely reassured. It was difficult to imagine Mount Hua without the women who had become its center of gravity. The disciples trained under their guidance, the villages sought their protection, and the neighboring sects measured their own decisions according to what they believed the Matriarchs might do. Their presence had become part of the mountain itself.

Bai Li did not blame anyone for finding the possibility of change frightening. She knew that being strong did not make a person immune to uncertainty. She also knew that keeping everyone dependent on her would not be a kindness. Mount Hua needed to remain capable of standing even when its two Matriarchs were not there to settle every dispute. If they chose to ascend, they would not leave the sect in confusion simply because their departure was extraordinary.

Later, after the elders had gone, Yan Cijin joined Bai Li on the covered walkway overlooking the main courtyard. Disciples crossed the open space below, carrying baskets of supplies and practice swords. An instructor was demonstrating a footwork pattern to a group of younger students. A pair of novices had stopped near a pillar to argue about the proper way to tie a sword tassel, and a third had apparently decided that the argument was worth more attention than her own task. The ordinary life of the sect continued with all the small distractions and inconveniences that made it feel like home.

Yan Cijin rested her hands on the railing. ”Do you think they will be all right without us?”

Bai Li did not offer a quick reassurance. She watched the courtyard for a moment, then answered honestly. ”They will make mistakes. There will be disputes we would have settled faster. Some people will test them because they believe our absence gives them an opportunity. Others will become stronger because they have to make decisions for themselves.”

”That is a rather balanced answer.”

”I have been practicing.”

Yan Cijin turned to her. ”You are learning from me at last.”

”I would not go that far.”

She smiled and slipped an arm around Yan Cijin’s waist. They stood close enough that their sleeves touched, looking down at the courtyard. Their love for Mount Hua was not an abstract sense of duty. It was a collection of familiar faces, a thousand small responsibilities, the smell of the kitchen at dawn, the sound of wooden swords striking one another in the practice yard, and the knowledge that the people below trusted them to take care of the mountain. Leaving it would hurt because it mattered.

But a thing could matter deeply without being the only thing that mattered. They could love their sect without remaining its rulers forever. They could care for their disciples without asking those disciples to stay children. They could pursue a new path without pretending that the life they had already lived was incomplete.

Yan Cijin leaned her head against Bai Li’s shoulder. ”We should tell the elders to begin preparing a succession plan, even if we do not decide to go.”

Bai Li nodded. ”A plan is sensible regardless. It will be useful if we ascend, and it will be useful if we remain. We should not wait until a decision becomes urgent before giving other people the authority they need.”

”Then we will start tomorrow.”

”Today.”

Yan Cijin looked up at her. ”You said we would rest this afternoon.”

”I said we would finish the reports before evening. I do not remember promising that the afternoon would be restful.”

”That is a very clever way to avoid admitting that you have tricked me.”

”I have learned from the best.”

Yan Cijin laughed, then pinched Bai Li’s side lightly through her robe. Bai Li barely reacted, but she caught Yan Cijin’s hand and brought it to her lips. Their small display of affection drew a few glances from the courtyard below. The disciples who noticed quickly looked away, not because the scene was forbidden, but because watching their Matriarchs behave like two ordinary wives still made them feel as though they were seeing something private by accident.

The two women returned to work shortly afterward. Bai Li reviewed the sect’s defensive arrangements and asked the appropriate elders to check the mountain passes. Yan Cijin visited the medical hall, where she confirmed that the supplies sent to the village beneath Mount Hua had arrived safely. She also spoke with the instructors about several promising disciples who would need more responsibility in the coming months. Neither treated the possibility of ascension as a reason to neglect the people who depended on them. If anything, the discovery had made them more aware that a responsible decision required preparation.

By evening, the reports had been sorted, the succession discussions had begun, and the cave’s records had been secured for further study. They returned to their private residence with tired minds and a growing sense that the world had shifted around them, even though nothing visible had changed in the ordinary routines of Mount Hua.

Yan Cijin sat near the window while Bai Li poured tea. The mountain was turning blue beneath the last light of day, and lanterns were beginning to glow along the lower paths. For the first time since entering the cave, neither woman had an immediate task waiting for her. They could sit, drink tea, and allow the day’s discoveries to settle without needing to solve them at once.

Yan Cijin wrapped both hands around her cup. ”Do you think we are ready?”

Bai Li sat beside her and took her free hand. ”We have been preparing for this our entire lives.”

Yan Cijin watched her face, looking for a sign that she was pretending to be more certain than she felt. Bai Li met her gaze without looking away. There was uncertainty in her, of course. She did not know what the Immortal Ascendant Realm was like, whether the transition would be difficult, or what it would mean to leave the mortal world behind. But uncertainty was not the same as fear, and fear did not have to make the decision for them.

Bai Li’s expression softened. ”I am still going to miss breakfast here.”

Yan Cijin laughed. ”Then we shall have a particularly good breakfast tomorrow.”

”Something with sweet cakes?”

”And the good tea.”

”The tea is always good.”

”You say that because you are the one who chooses it.”

”I say that because you drink it.”

Yan Cijin leaned in and kissed her. The kiss was gentle, carrying none of the urgency that had sometimes marked their early courtship. It was the kind of kiss that belonged to people who had known each other for years and still found pleasure in being close. When they separated, Yan Cijin rested her forehead briefly against Bai Li’s.

”Whatever we choose,” she said, ”I want us to choose it honestly. I do not want to stay because we are afraid of leaving, and I do not want to go because we feel that we must prove something to the heavens.”

Bai Li brushed a strand of hair from her face. ”Then that is what we will do.”
