Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]

She thought about Bai Li. Not as a helpless attachment she could not bear to lose, but as the person who had never demanded that she choose between love and ambition. Bai Li had supported her training even when Yan Cijin’s plans had seemed unreasonable. She had challenged her when she was being careless and encouraged her when she doubted herself. She had never asked Yan Cijin to become less powerful so that she could feel secure, nor had she tried to turn their marriage into a reason for Yan Cijin to abandon the future she wanted.

Why, then, should the heavens require such a sacrifice?

Yan Cijin lifted her chin. ”If this place has something to teach me, it can teach me without asking me to pretend that my life has no meaning.”

The immortals did not react. The voice continued to describe the opportunities she would gain, the vastness of the worlds beyond the mortal realm, and the knowledge she could obtain if she stopped clinging to what she already knew. Yan Cijin listened until it finished. Then she turned away from the throne and walked down the staircase, leaving the palace and its silent court behind her.

She did not reject the possibility of becoming stronger. She rejected the claim that strength required her to deny what she loved. There was a difference, and she had no intention of forgetting it merely because the illusion wore the face of heaven.

At the same time, Bai Li found herself in a different vision. She stood on a high platform overlooking an empire that covered the known world. Great roads crossed the plains, secure trade routes connected the cities, and watchtowers rose along every mountain pass. No village suffered under the demands of a martial gang. No caravan vanished between settlements. No minor sect dared to prey on people who could not defend themselves. The banners of countless organizations flew beneath one central standard, and every one of them answered to Bai Li.

She stood alone at the highest point of the empire, surrounded by the results of absolute order. It was a vision designed for someone who had spent years protecting others. The roads were safe. The villages had food. The weak were not forced to kneel before those with stronger fists. She could prevent the kinds of suffering that had once driven her to train harder, travel farther, and sharpen her sword until its movements became almost impossible to see.

The voice in the vision told her that this was what true power could accomplish. If she ruled the world without challenge, no one could undo her work. If she remained at the summit, the empire would endure. If she accepted a life in which every part of her attention belonged to that duty, the suffering she had seen in the mortal world could be reduced to almost nothing.

There was logic in the offer. Bai Li did not dismiss it simply because it was an illusion. A strong leader could protect many people. A stable system could prevent needless conflict. She had never believed that power existed only for personal enjoyment, and she would have been a fool to pretend otherwise. The empire was orderly, prosperous, and peaceful in a way that the jianghu had rarely been.

But she noticed the silence. The streets were full of people, yet no sound reached the platform. The gardens were immaculate, but no one sat beneath the pines to share tea with her. There was a large residence at the center of the city, built to suit a ruler of her standing, but it contained no familiar robe draped across a chair, no half finished book on a table, no sweet cakes left uncovered because Yan Cijin had become distracted by a conversation and forgotten them. There was no one who could look at Bai Li and see the woman beneath the title.

Yan Cijin was absent, not because the vision showed her dead or harmed, but because the life being offered had left no room for her. Bai Li had become so consumed by the task of protecting everyone that she had forgotten how to return to the person who made that protection worth doing. The empire offered no scene of betrayal, no tragic farewell, and no obvious wound. It simply showed her a life in which every duty had been completed and everything precious had quietly disappeared from her days.

Bai Li walked through the empire. She saw children playing on safe streets, merchants opening their shops, and older people sitting outside their homes without fear. She did not deny the value of what she was being shown. She could understand why someone might spend a lifetime pursuing such a future. But she also understood that a world could be safer without being the only thing a person was allowed to love.

She stopped at the highest balcony and looked across the immense city. ”If this is the price of peace, then the offer is incomplete.”

The voice asked what could possibly be missing. Every road had been secured. Every sect had been brought under control. Every threat had been removed. Her name would be remembered as the one who had finally ended the endless disputes of the jianghu. What else could she want?

Bai Li looked at the empty place beside her. ”My wife.”

The voice answered that a ruler could not divide her attention between the world and one person. It said that the responsibilities of a sovereign required sacrifices, and that the person who stood at the summit had to accept a loneliness ordinary people could never understand.

Bai Li almost laughed. She had heard versions of that argument from ambitious men who believed that feeling nothing made them stronger, from martial artists who treated kindness as a weakness, and from people who wanted to be admired more than they wanted to be useful. They always spoke as though love were an obstacle that serious people must eventually overcome. Bai Li had never found that idea convincing. Her love for Yan Cijin did not make her less capable of leading Mount Hua. It made her more aware of what leadership was for.

She could protect a village without being forced to forget her own home. She could serve a sect without giving up the right to be a wife. She could grow stronger without treating affection as a chain. If the illusion could not imagine a world in which those things were all true, it was not showing her the limit of her power. It was showing her the limit of its own understanding.

”I do not need to rule every road to keep the road outside my home safe,” Bai Li said. ”I do not need to control every person in the world to care about the people who live in it. And I will not agree that a life is complete simply because no one can challenge it.”

The balcony shook. A crack appeared along the stone beneath her feet, and the empire began to fade as though the sun had moved behind a cloud. Bai Li did not draw her sword. She had no reason to fight the vision. It was not an enemy standing before her, and striking it would only make its point look more convincing. Instead, she turned away from the empty throne and walked toward the place where the palace doors had been.

Both illusions began to dissolve at the same time. The palace of immortals blurred into silver mist. The great empire lost its color, its buildings fading until the only things left were the roads and the outlines of distant mountains. The mirrors along the real chamber’s walls trembled, their surfaces covered in fine cracks that spread outward from their centers. Bai Li and Yan Cijin stepped free of their visions almost together, each returning to the circular platform with the memory of what she had seen still clear in her mind.

For a moment, neither spoke. They did not know the details of the other’s experience, but they could see that something important had happened. Yan Cijin’s eyes were bright with determination. Bai Li’s expression had settled into the quiet, steady calm that appeared whenever she reached a decision she would not abandon. Their hands found each other without hesitation.

”Did you see something interesting?” Yan Cijin asked.

”Very.”

”Was it impressive?”

”Quite.” Bai Li looked at her. ”Was yours?”

”Very impressive.”

”Did you like it?”

Yan Cijin considered the question. ”Parts of it.”

Bai Li nodded as if this made perfect sense. ”Mine had some good points too.”

That answer brought a smile to Yan Cijin’s face. She could imagine Bai Li standing before an illusion of unimaginable power and still judging it like a practical woman considering whether a new training ground was worth the cost. It would have been easy to laugh, but beneath the humor she felt a familiar warmth. Whatever the chamber had offered them, neither had allowed it to decide what mattered most.

”Would you tell me about yours?” she asked.

”Of course.” Bai Li squeezed her hand. ”But I would rather hear yours first.”

Yan Cijin opened her mouth to answer, then paused. She looked at the cracked mirrors and the silver light pooling along the floor. ”I think the cave wanted us to believe that we had to become different people before we could go any farther.”

”Perhaps it wanted to know whether we believed that.”

”Then it received its answer.”

Bai Li lifted Yan Cijin’s hand and kissed her knuckles. ”It did.”

As they spoke, the cracks spread across every mirror. The reflections broke into small pieces of light that drifted into the air instead of falling to the floor. The silver threads beneath the platform drew together, forming a narrow path that led toward a newly revealed doorway on the far side of the chamber. The path was not bright enough to look inviting, but it was clear and stable.

Yan Cijin watched the last mirror vanish. ”Do you suppose the next room has more illusions?”

”Probably.”

”Perhaps it will show us a palace full of books.”

”Would that tempt you?”

”Very much, if the books were rare.”

Bai Li gave her a sideways look. ”And if it offered you every book in the world, but no me?”

Yan Cijin made a thoughtful sound. ”I would ask whether the palace had a private reading room for two.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is a very good answer. If they refused, I would leave. If they agreed, I would bring you with me.”

Bai Li laughed softly. ”That sounds like you.”

”Of course it does. I am not about to become an entirely different woman because a cave has asked me a difficult question.”

They crossed the platform and followed the newly revealed passage. The door opened into a smaller chamber, one that lacked the strange mirrors and the shining pillars. A weathered statue stood at its center, its features softened by age but its posture still proud. The figure wore a simple robe and held a sword pointed toward the ground. Its face had been damaged, leaving only the outline of the eyes and mouth, but the hands had been carved with unusual care. One held the sword loosely, without tension, while the other rested open at the figure’s side.

Bai Li stopped in front of the statue. ”The Keeper of the Last Gate.”

Yan Cijin nodded. ”Or someone who wanted people to believe that he was.”

”You remain determined not to trust anything.”

”I trust you.”

”That is not the same thing.”

”No, it is much easier.” Yan Cijin stepped up beside her and looked at the inscription carved around the statue’s base. ”The writing is clearer here.”

They read it together. The inscription explained that the Moon-Mirror Cave had not been built to reward the strongest practitioners or to separate those who deserved to ascend from those who did not.
