Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]

Outside, a bell rang to mark the end of the day’s formal duties. The sound passed over the roofs and the courtyard, fading into the mountain air. It was an ordinary bell, rung by an ordinary hand, and the two women listened to it with a quiet appreciation they might not have felt before visiting the cave. Their world was filled with ordinary things that mattered precisely because they had no need to announce themselves as extraordinary.

The evening belonged to them after that. They shared a meal in their private rooms, choosing familiar dishes rather than anything elaborate. Yan Cijin told Bai Li about a young disciple who had attempted to impress the medical hall instructors by carrying too many boxes at once and had ended up spilling herbs across the floor. Bai Li told her about the defensive elder who had taken an hour to explain why a simple change to the gate watch schedule would prevent three separate problems. They laughed at the small absurdities of sect life, and the conversation eased them out of the serious mood that had followed their discovery.

Later, they returned to the room where they kept their private collection of books and letters. A small wooden box sat on the shelf beside the window. Yan Cijin had not opened it in months, but she took it down now and placed it between them. Inside were old notes from their courtship, a few pressed flowers, two narrow strips of silk from the day they married, and a letter Bai Li had written when she had been away from Mount Hua for a mission that lasted longer than expected.

Bai Li looked at the letter and groaned softly. ”You kept that?”

”Of course.”

”It was a very poor letter.”

”You wrote that you missed me.”

”I wrote it in three lines.”

”Four. You counted the greeting.”

Bai Li reached for the paper, but Yan Cijin moved it out of reach with a delighted smile. ”You also asked whether I had been eating properly, whether the weather had been cold, whether the elders were bothering me, and whether I was sleeping enough. You said you were sure I was taking good care of myself, then told me to eat more anyway.”

”That sounds reasonable.”

”It was adorable.”

”It was practical.”

”You signed it with three extra words.”

Bai Li gave her a wary look. ”Which words?”

Yan Cijin held the letter close to her chest and recited them with unmistakable pleasure. ”Your wife, who misses you more than she will admit.”

Bai Li covered her face with one hand. ”I should have burned it.”

”You would never.”

”No,” Bai Li admitted. ”I would not.”

Yan Cijin set the letter down and reached for her. Bai Li drew her into her arms, and for a while they sat together with the wooden box open on the table. They did not need to examine every memory inside it. Some had already become part of their everyday life, repeated in the stories they told one another and in the habits they continued to share. Others had softened with time, losing their sharp edges but keeping their warmth.

Their first meeting had been complicated. They had encountered one another during a dispute between two martial organizations, each convinced the other possessed information that had been deliberately withheld. Bai Li had arrived with a sword and a reputation for being difficult to reason with. Yan Cijin had arrived with a calm expression and a plan that was far more complicated than the situation seemed to require. They had spent the first hour disagreeing about how to solve the problem and the next two discovering that their methods worked surprisingly well together.

Bai Li had admired Yan Cijin’s mind before she admitted that she admired her beauty. Yan Cijin had noticed Bai Li’s restraint before she acknowledged how handsome the other woman was. Their attraction had not erased their arguments. If anything, it had made them more determined to prove that the other was wrong about some small point that neither would have cared about in anyone else.

When Bai Li finally decided to confess her feelings, she had prepared a speech so carefully that she had memorized every line. Yan Cijin had listened to the first few sentences before interrupting to ask whether Bai Li intended to ask her to marry her or merely explain the philosophical basis of romantic attachment. Bai Li had lost her place, then her composure, and finally the speech itself. Yan Cijin had laughed, kissed her, and told her that she had been waiting for Bai Li to stop trying to turn a confession into a formal proposal.

Bai Li still maintained that this was unfair. Yan Cijin maintained that it had saved them both time.

”You were in love with me first,” Yan Cijin said now, returning the old letter to the box.

”I was not.”

”You brought me medicine after our second meeting.”

”You were injured.”

”You waited outside the medical room for six hours.”

”I had business nearby.”

”The medical room was on the other side of the sect.”

”I had a great deal of business.”

Yan Cijin’s expression turned tender. ”You also left food for me and pretended you had brought too much.”

Bai Li looked at her for a long moment. ”Perhaps I was interested.”

”Perhaps?”

”Very interested.”

Yan Cijin smiled, pleased with the rare admission. ”I knew it.”

Bai Li rested her forehead against Yan Cijin’s. ”And you were worse.”

”I was perfectly reasonable.”

”You found excuses to visit every place I trained.”

”I admired your technique.”

”You asked me to repeat the same movement seven times.”

”It was an excellent movement.”

”You told me the first six were wrong.”

”They were.”

Bai Li laughed, and Yan Cijin kissed her before she could come up with another defense. Their laughter became quiet as the night deepened. They returned the letters and keepsakes to the box, then put it back on the shelf. It was comforting to remember the beginning of their relationship, not because they wished to return to it, but because the women they had been then were still present in the women they had become. Their marriage was not a moment frozen in time. It was a life that had continued to grow.

Later, Yan Cijin sat by the open window and brushed her hair while Bai Li prepared another pot of tea. Their conversation returned to the cave. The gate in the vision had remained clear in Bai Li’s mind, its shape suspended above a sea of clouds. Yan Cijin remembered the sense of standing before something too vast to understand all at once. Neither felt that the heavens had chosen them because they were special in some simple, flattering way. They had worked too hard to believe that power made them entitled to certainty.

”If we can reach the Immortal Ascendant Realm,” Yan Cijin said, ”I wonder what it will ask of us.”

”Perhaps nothing.”

”Perhaps.”

”Perhaps it will ask us to do something difficult.”

”That seems more likely.”

Bai Li set a cup beside her. ”If the path is dangerous, we will study it before we take it. If it requires a choice, we will make that choice ourselves. And if the heavens expect us to become people we do not recognize, we can refuse.”

Yan Cijin looked up at her. ”Even if it means we never know what lies beyond?”

”Yes.”

The answer was immediate, but not dismissive. Bai Li understood the importance of the possibility. They had spent much of their lives improving themselves, and the thought of discovering a realm beyond their present limits stirred something deep in both of them. She would not ask Yan Cijin to abandon that ambition out of fear, just as she would not abandon her own. But she would not trade their freedom to choose for an unquestioned promise of greater power.

Yan Cijin took her hand. ”Then we will find out what the heavens want.”

”And if the heavens are unreasonable?”

”Then we will explain the situation.”

Bai Li stared at her, then laughed. Yan Cijin laughed too, nearly spilling her tea. The seriousness dissolved into affection, and the two women settled together near the window, shoulders touching, fingers intertwined. For a long time they watched the stars above Mount Hua and spoke about nothing important at all. Yan Cijin complained about the way one of the elders had described a simple formation repair as an urgent crisis. Bai Li admitted that she had once nearly thrown a report into the pond because the writer had used six pages to explain something that could have been said in one paragraph. Yan Cijin told her that she would have rescued the report, dried it, and made Bai Li read it anyway.

Their closeness became warmer as the night deepened. They exchanged kisses, whispered affectionate nonsense, and teased one another about who had become more hopelessly attached over the years. Bai Li was still the one who reached out first when Yan Cijin seemed tired, and Yan Cijin still knew how to make Bai Li forget a difficult thought with a single quiet kiss. Their passion had not faded into habit. It had become more intimate because they knew each other so well, because they no longer needed to wonder whether they were wanted, and because they could be playful without fearing that one of them would misunderstand.

When they finally lay beneath the covers, Yan Cijin rested her forehead against Bai Li’s and studied her face. ”Do you have any regrets about the life we have built?”

Bai Li took her time answering, which made Yan Cijin narrow her eyes. ”You are thinking too carefully.”

”I am choosing my words.”

”That is usually a dangerous sign.”

”I have one regret.”

Yan Cijin lifted her head. ”What is it?”

”That I did not meet you sooner.”

For a moment, Yan Cijin said nothing. The answer had landed more softly than a dramatic confession, yet it reached somewhere deep in her heart. She touched Bai Li’s cheek with the back of her fingers, her expression gentler than before. ”If we had met earlier, I would have fallen in love with you earlier.”

”That sounds good.”

”It would have meant waiting even longer before you finally asked me to marry you.”

Bai Li laughed. ”You would have complained the entire time.”

”I would have been very patient.”

”You once told me you would wait exactly three days before finding me and asking what was taking so long.”

”That was patience. I could have come the next morning.”

Bai Li drew her close and kissed her, laughing softly against her lips. Yan Cijin curled into her arms, one hand resting over Bai Li’s heart. Outside, the stars appeared brighter above the forbidden summit. Neither woman noticed the faint silver light gathering around the ancestral bell.

Bai Li woke briefly in the final hours before dawn. The room was dark except for the narrow strip of moonlight falling across the floor. Yan Cijin was curled against her, one hand resting over Bai Li’s heart and her hair spread across the pillow. Bai Li did not move. Her wife had always slept more peacefully when they could touch one another, and Bai Li had never thought of that habit as a burden. It was one of the quiet privileges of their marriage, a small familiar comfort that had survived battles, long journeys, difficult conversations, and years of public responsibility.

She kissed Yan Cijin’s hair and closed her eyes again.

Far above the residence, the ancestral bell began to glow. No sound came from it this time. A thread of silver light traveled along the ancient inscriptions, illuminating symbols that had remained dormant for centuries. The light reached the restricted summit and disappeared beneath the mountain, passing through layers of stone as though they were no obstacle at all. Deep inside the rock, an ancient mechanism responded.
