Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]

The first attendant in the corridor bowed so quickly that the hairpin at the back of her head nearly slipped loose.

”Good morning, Matriarchs.”

”Good morning,” Yan Cijin replied warmly.

Bai Li inclined her head. ”Has Elder Lu been waiting long?”

”Not long, Matriarch. He said there was no need to disturb you. He is waiting in the outer reception room with the River Cloud delegation.”

Yan Cijin glanced at Bai Li. The corner of Bai Li’s mouth moved slightly.

”How considerate of him,” Yan Cijin said.

”Very considerate,” Bai Li agreed.

Neither of them mentioned that they had just ignored three bells and a polite announcement because they wanted to remain in bed together.

They walked toward the reception room side by side. Their hands brushed once, then again. At the turn in the corridor, where the attendants could no longer see them clearly, Bai Li reached for Yan Cijin’s fingers. Yan Cijin slipped her hand into hers without looking down. The gesture lasted only a moment, but it was enough to leave both women smiling as they continued into the day.

By the time they reached the reception hall, Bai Li’s expression had settled into its familiar calm. Yan Cijin’s smile was gentle and composed. The attendants straightened. The guards at the door bowed. The delegates from the River Cloud Sect rose so quickly that their chairs scraped against the floor.

Anyone who had seen the couple bargaining over kisses beneath a warm quilt would have struggled to believe that these were the same women. But that was the way of Mount Hua’s two Matriarchs. The world knew their power. Their household knew their tenderness. Only a very small number of people had ever been fortunate enough to see both at once, and those people understood that the two sides were not in conflict.

The tenderness was part of their strength. The strength gave them the freedom to protect the life they had made together.

And for Bai Li and Yan Cijin, there was no duty in the world that could make that life feel ordinary.

Mount Hua’s highest training terrace stood above the main halls, where the stone paths narrowed and the pine trees gave way to open sky. From there, the mountain range stretched in every direction, layered in blue and silver. Rivers wound through the valleys below like loose strands of silk, and small settlements sat among the foothills, their roofs catching the first light of morning. The air was cold enough to sting the lungs, clean enough that every breath felt like a small act of renewal.

By the time Bai Li and Yan Cijin arrived, a group of senior disciples had already gathered along the terrace. They were supposed to be practicing their forms, but their movements had grown noticeably slower as they watched the path leading up from the inner courtyard. Word that the Matriarchs would be training together had spread before sunrise, and every student who could invent a reason to be nearby had found one.

The instructors knew exactly what was happening. They also knew better than to tell the disciples to leave. A rare chance to observe the highest level of martial cultivation was worth more than a dozen ordinary lessons, even if half the students had forgotten to hide their curiosity.

Bai Li wore a dark martial robe fitted neatly around her shoulders and waist. Her build was lean rather than bulky, all long lines and quiet power. Her arms showed the strength of years spent holding a sword, and the way she moved made it clear that she did not need to show off that strength. Her hair was tied high, and the sword at her waist looked plain until one noticed the subtle shimmer along the edge of its sheath. She was handsome in a way that could make a crowded room turn quiet, with a beauty that was sharp enough to seem dangerous.

Yan Cijin wore pale silk under a light outer robe, the sleeves tied back for practice. Her hair fell in a glossy stream down her back before being secured with a simple white ribbon. The morning breeze stirred a few loose strands around her face. At first glance, she looked more like a noble lady visiting a mountain temple than a martial artist capable of stopping an army with her aura alone. Then she stepped onto the terrace, and the atmosphere changed just enough for every disciple present to remember that appearances had never been a reliable guide to her strength.

The two women greeted the instructors and asked after the students’ progress. Yan Cijin paused to correct a young disciple whose right shoulder was too tense. Bai Li showed another how to adjust her stance without locking her knee. Their advice was direct and useful, never delivered in a way that made the students feel small. A person could be terrified of the Matriarchs and still find it easy to learn from them. Neither believed that fear was the same as respect.

One of the senior instructors bowed. ”Matriarchs, the students have been studying the Twin Constellations Sword Art. They hoped to see a demonstration, if you are willing.”

Yan Cijin glanced at Bai Li. ”They have been studying it, have they?”

”They have,” the instructor said carefully.

”Then we should see what they have learned before we show them anything.”

The students straightened as one.

Bai Li’s mouth curved. It was a small smile, but it sent a quiet ripple of panic through the younger disciples. They had heard stories about that expression. It usually meant she had noticed something they were hoping to hide.

The students formed pairs and began their practice. Most had memorized the opening sequences, and a few had learned how to match the broad rhythm of the two sword paths. But they were still imitating shapes rather than understanding the ideas behind them. Their movements were either too stiff or too eager. Some tried to copy Bai Li’s directness and ended up telegraphing their attacks. Others copied Yan Cijin’s flowing steps but forgot to protect their own balance.

Bai Li watched without interrupting. Yan Cijin moved between the pairs and offered corrections, sometimes with a question that led the student to discover the flaw herself. When the practice ended, the students stood in a line, trying not to look nervous.

”The art is called Twin Constellations because two stars can share one sky without becoming the same star,” Yan Cijin said. ”You are not supposed to copy your partner’s movements exactly. You are supposed to understand what your own sword is doing, what your partner’s sword is doing, and how the two paths can support each other without losing their separate purposes. If you only imitate, the form will collapse the moment your opponent changes the rhythm.”

Bai Li nodded. ”Your partner is not a mirror. They are another person. Watch them properly. If you decide what they are going to do before they do it, you stop seeing what is actually in front of you.”

The students bowed, taking the lesson seriously. A few glanced at one another and seemed to recognize that the same advice could be applied to more than sword practice. Bai Li and Yan Cijin had spent years learning to move together. That did not mean either woman had stopped being herself.

After the students returned to the edge of the terrace, the instructor asked whether the Matriarchs would show the complete form. Bai Li drew her sword. Yan Cijin followed.

The sound of steel leaving its sheath was soft, but every disciple heard it clearly.

They took their places several paces apart. For a moment, neither moved. The sun had just begun to crest the ridge, laying a pale gold line across the stone. The wind brushed the pines and carried a few loose leaves over the terrace. Bai Li’s expression settled into complete focus. Yan Cijin’s smile faded, leaving behind an almost startling stillness.

Then Bai Li stepped forward.

Her first cut was simple, direct, and so clean that the students almost failed to see the movement itself. Yan Cijin turned her blade to meet it, not with force but with an angle that guided the strike past her shoulder. Her next step carried her around Bai Li’s left side, her sword tracing a pale arc toward Bai Li’s ribs. Bai Li shifted a few inches and let the point pass through the space where her body had been. Her own sword returned in a short line aimed toward Yan Cijin’s wrist.

Yan Cijin withdrew, pivoted, and changed the rhythm. Her movements flowed one into the next, light and graceful, each one carrying more danger than its softness suggested. Bai Li answered with the kind of precision that made the fight look almost simple. She did not chase. She did not waste motion. Every time Yan Cijin moved, Bai Li seemed to arrive at the place where she would be before she had fully decided to go there.

The disciples forgot to whisper.

As the exchange continued, the air around the terrace grew still. The pine branches stopped swaying. The wind seemed to hold its breath. A pressure settled over the stone floor, deep and immense, until even the most talented young masters found it difficult to draw a full breath. It was not killing intent. Neither Matriarch was trying to threaten the students. The pressure came from the simple fact that they were watching two people whose cultivation had reached a level the rest of the martial world could barely imagine.

Bai Li turned her wrist. Yan Cijin recognized the adjustment and moved into the opening it created. Her blade came up under Bai Li’s guard, while Bai Li’s sword slid toward Yan Cijin’s shoulder. They crossed in the center of the terrace. In the next instant, Bai Li’s blade rested lightly against Yan Cijin’s shoulder, and Yan Cijin’s point touched the space beneath Bai Li’s chin.

They had reached a draw.

Neither had been forced backward. Neither had yielded a position that could not be recovered. Their blades were close enough to touch, and both could have chosen a different movement if they had been fighting to kill. Instead, they stood with their weapons poised and looked at one another.

Yan Cijin smiled first.

”You were distracted.”

Bai Li did not move her sword. ”By what?”

”Me.”

A few students swallowed. The exchange had been so precise that they were still trying to work out which moment had decided the draw. Yan Cijin, meanwhile, was looking at her wife with the pleased expression of someone who had found a chance to tease her in public and intended to enjoy it.

Bai Li glanced briefly at the students, then returned her gaze to Yan Cijin. ”I was thinking about how fortunate I am.”

Yan Cijin’s composure broke. A laugh escaped her before she could stop it, and she lowered her sword with a shake of her head. Bai Li’s own expression softened. The pressure on the terrace lifted so quickly that the students nearly stumbled as they drew breath again.

”Matriarch,” one of the younger disciples blurted, ”were you truly distracted?”

Yan Cijin looked at him with open interest. Bai Li calmly returned her sword to its sheath.

”No,” Bai Li said. ”But your Matriarch Yan will be very pleased if you remember that you should never assume an opponent is distracted simply because they smile.”

Yan Cijin looked offended. ”I do not smile that much during a fight.”

Bai Li looked at her.

Yan Cijin held the expression for two seconds before giving up and laughing again.

The demonstration continued. Bai Li asked one of the instructors to hold a wooden target at the far edge of the terrace. She did not take a stance or make any visible preparation. She simply turned her wrist and released a thin thread of sword intent. A leaf that had been drifting through the air was cut into dozens of tiny pieces. Each piece fell separately. The branch from which the leaf had come remained untouched, and the target behind it did not even tremble.
