Dawn Experiment

# Day 15 - 9:00

Morning hit like an empty threat—too bright, too still, as if the storm had taken the rest of the world with it and left only this room, this suite, this fragile equilibrium. Zhao had moved the treatment shift to afternoon for the first time all month. He said it was to give the fishing crew a break, but everyone knew it was to buy time for this. The meeting. The reckoning.

Aida emerged from their shared bathroom, hair still damp, twisted into the sort of severe bun Zhao now recognized as her armor for difficult days. She moved through the treatment suite—their home for nearly a week now—with the familiarity of routine. Her shoulders rose and fell too quickly as she set down their morning tea tray, the ceramic cups clinking against the low table where they’d eaten every meal since the storm. Her hands steadied only when she poured the green tea in its familiar circle, a ritual that had become their anchor.

Mei-Lin padded out from her alcove in the same pale blue sleep shirt she wore most mornings, its delicate floral print faded from too many washings in the suite’s tiny sink. The contrast with her perpetual scowl made Zhao’s chest tighten with unexpected fondness. She folded herself onto her usual dining chair, legs tucked underneath as always, making herself smaller in the space they’d all come to share. When Aida slid her cup across the table—same position, same distance as yesterday—Mei-Lin cradled it with both hands, her lips nearly disappearing behind the rim.

The suite itself was frigid. Every time the air conditioning cycled, the ceiling vent snapped open with a wet click, sending a thread of cold air right between Zhao’s shoulder blades. He hunched closer to the low table, drawing heat from the mug and from Aida’s knee, which hovered less than an inch from his.

No one spoke for the first six minutes. He counted, watching the steam from Aida’s cup spiral and break against her face.

At minute seven, Mei-Lin shifted. “She’s late,” she said, not looking up.

Aida checked her phone, then the clock on the wall. “She’s never late.” She tried to sound dismissive, but her voice was tight.

Zhao poured more tea, ignoring his own churning stomach. “Maybe she’s waiting for us to break first,” he said, half joke, half warning.

They sat with it. The silence felt engineered, as if the ship’s soundproofing were tuned to eliminate not just engine noise but the space between words.

After the first ten minutes, Aida’s leg started to bounce, just a little. She caught herself, pressed her palm into her thigh so hard the knuckles whitened.

At fifteen minutes, Mei-Lin picked at the cuticle on her left thumb until it bled. She wiped the bead of red on her sleeve and watched it disappear, like it wasn’t worth noticing.

At twenty minutes, Zhao pushed his chair back and stood. He walked to the window, stared out at the ocean, the water as flat and gray as concrete. “She’s not coming,” he said.

Aida didn’t respond. Her jaw clenched, the muscle twitching with every swallow. Zhao turned to her, saw the wetness in her eyes, then looked away. There were tears, but she’d never admit it, not even now.

Mei-Lin set her cup down, the porcelain clink echoing in the dead air. “Should we go find her?” she asked.

Zhao shook his head. “She knows where we are. She’ll show, or she won’t.”

They waited anyway.

At twenty-three minutes, there were footsteps in the corridor—deliberate, slow, neither hurried nor tentative. Then nothing. Then the faintest scratch at the suite door, not a knock, just a brief friction.

Zhao rose, crossed the carpet in five steps, and pulled the door open.

No Vivienne. Only a crisp white envelope, perfectly aligned with the threshold, her handwriting unmistakable: “For Zhao and company.”

He crouched, picked it up, felt the tremor in his own hand. For a second he just stared at the name, the way she’d written it—block letters, each one formed as if she’d practiced it a thousand times. He broke the seal, opened the flap, and read the first line. Then he read it again.

He turned, holding the letter aloft, his face gone blank.

“She’s not coming,” he said. “She wrote us instead.”

Mei-Lin made a noise—half laugh, half growl—and covered her face with her hands.

Aida’s expression didn’t change. But the trembling in her leg spread, up through her arms, into her voice. “Well,” she said, her tone so flat it barely registered, “that’s her answer.”

Zhao set the letter on the table, careful not to crease it. He reached for Aida’s hand—her fingers were cold and stiff, but she didn’t pull away.

For a long time, nobody moved. The tea steamed, the vent cycled, the world outside continued its perfect, silent indifference.

Only the letter sat between them, daring them to read further, daring them to believe it.

# Day 15 - 9:24

He read it aloud.

He didn’t mean to—not at first—but as his eyes scanned the first paragraph, he realized neither Aida nor Mei-Lin would touch the letter unless he did. So Zhao unfolded the page, the sound crisp and surgical, and began.

“I am sorry,” it started. “I’m sorry for not coming in. I was there—actually I was early—but I couldn’t knock. I listened for your voices. I stood there for twenty minutes, fighting myself, and when I lost, I wrote this. I know that’s weak.”

Zhao stopped, throat closing, then forced himself onward.

“I know the world has changed. I see what you’re all building, and I want it to work. I want to be part of it. But I’m not built like you. Where you see sharing, I see loss. Where you see family, I see competition. I was raised to treat love like a resource: finite, hoarded, something to win or lose. It’s not just my mother’s voice in my head—it’s the world I lived in for twenty years. Even now, every part of me says: run. Compete. Claw back whatever you can before someone else takes it away.”

He heard Mei-Lin’s breath catch, the start of a sob.

“I know this is wrong. I do. But knowing isn’t the same as changing. Every time I see you—any of you—I want to take, not give. I want to win. I don’t want to be this person. But I don’t know how not to be. Maybe time will fix it. Maybe nothing will. I’m sorry if that’s not enough.”

He paused. The page was trembling in his hands now, the fine script blurring at the edges.

“I hope you can build something better, even if I can’t join you. Please don’t stop. I’ll try every day to be less of a Laurent. But I’m not sure I can win this fight.”

There was more, but Zhao felt the words collapse into themselves.

He handed the page to Aida. She took it with shaking fingers, her thumb pressing a perfect oval of sweat into the top margin.

No one moved for almost a minute. Then, without a word, Zhao pushed out from the table, nearly toppling his chair. He grabbed his jacket and stalked for the door, the muscle in his jaw jumping so hard it hurt.

He made it three steps before Mei-Lin blocked the exit. She was small, but she squared her shoulders, arms locked like a gate across the threshold. “Don’t,” she said, her voice a whisper but absolute.

He tried to step around. She held him in place, her eyes—normally so yielding—sharp as flint. “You can’t fix this,” she said, her voice low. “You’ll just make it worse.”

He glared, then faltered. He saw the truth in her face: not anger, but understanding.

“Stay with Aida,” Mei-Lin said, the words brittle. “She needs you more.”

Zhao looked past her. Aida was still at the table, the letter held like a piece of evidence, her eyes blank and ancient.

He sagged, nodding once.

Mei-Lin slipped past, closing the door behind her with a click. She left him standing in the cold, her scent—warm milk with a hint of sweetness—lingering in the air like a whispered secret of her body’s constant labor. For a moment, he felt the urge to chase her anyway, to force the issue, to storm the barricade of Vivienne’s pain.

But he didn’t. He returned to the table, sat across from Aida, and waited.

They sat in silence, the letter between them like a wound. Aida’s hand was cold in his.

He thought about Vivienne’s words: ”I was raised to treat love like a resource. Finite. Something to win or lose.”

Is that what I’m doing? he wondered. Treating love like something to hold onto because I’ve lost so much?

Aida squeezed his hand. ”What are you thinking?”

He looked at her face—tired, worried, still beautiful.

”Nothing,” he said. ”Just... glad you’re here.”

She nodded, accepting the lie. Or maybe she knew and loved him anyway.

She didn’t look up, just smoothed the page flat and read it again, every word, every scratch-out. He wondered what she saw there, if anything could make it better.

After a while, she set the letter down, pushed her hair behind her ear, and started to laugh. It was a small, shattered sound, the kind you might make at a really good punchline delivered after a funeral.

“Sorry,” Aida said, wiping her eyes with the heel of her hand. “I just thought it would be easier.”

He almost said, “Me too.” But instead, he reached across the table and covered her hand with his. They sat like that, hands entwined, tea gone cold, the ghost of a family in a room built for nothing but survival.

Outside, somewhere, Mei-Lin was searching for a woman who couldn’t find herself.

Inside, all that remained was the letter, the scent of green tea, and the lesson that sometimes, love was just another way to lose.

# Day 15 - 10:00

Mei-Lin walked the corridor in silence. The storm was long gone, but the wetness of the carpet and the smell of ozone clung to the air, as if the ship itself refused to dry out. She didn’t know where Vivienne had gone; she didn’t even know if Vivienne wanted to be found. Still, she checked the usual places—the stairwells, the air deck, the lounge by the observation windows.

Nothing.

Then, down by the midships promenade, she heard it: a small, stifled sound, not quite crying, not quite breathing. She slowed her steps, padded toward the source, and found Vivienne folded into a window nook, knees up, forehead pressed to the glass. The sea behind her was a long smear of gray, indifferent to everything.

Vivienne didn’t look up when Mei-Lin crouched beside her. The only movement was a slow clench and release of her hands, the nails leaving half-moons in her palm.

Mei-Lin didn’t reach out, just sat on her heels, legs aching within seconds. “Is it okay if I stay?” she asked, voice pitched low.

Vivienne shook her head, but didn’t tell her to leave. She wiped her nose on her sleeve, then buried her face deeper into her arms.

For a long time, neither spoke. The ship vibrated with its own pulse, engines humming, somewhere a vent rattling every few minutes. Mei-Lin let the silence settle, then let it stretch further, until the only thing left was the click of Vivienne’s teeth every time she bit back another sob.

When Vivienne finally looked at her, the eyes were feral, rimmed red, her lips bloodless. “Why are you here?” she whispered, but there was no venom in it.

Mei-Lin shrugged. “To check if you’re still breathing.”

Vivienne let out a noise between a laugh and a gasp. “Barely.”

Mei-Lin nodded, then pulled her knees to her chest, mirroring Vivienne’s posture. “It’s hard,” she said.

Vivienne stared, then blinked, confused by the simplicity. “What is?”

Mei-Lin traced a circle on the carpet with her toe. “All of it. The sharing. The giving up.” She looked away, her voice so small Vivienne barely heard it. “The pretending you’re not dying inside, every time it happens.”

Vivienne flinched, as if struck. “You make it look easy,” she said, her voice bitter. “You have Zhao. You have Aida. Even when you’re not with them, they think about you.” She spat the words: “I’m just a spare part. Not even that, now.”

Mei-Lin shook her head. “That’s not true.”

Vivienne’s laugh was pure acid. “Tell that to Aida, or Zhao. Tell it to yourself.”

She went quiet, then, the only sound her breathing—short, ragged, as if every inhale hurt.

Mei-Lin let the words hang, then broke the silence. “You’re not wrong. It’s easier for me, sometimes. But not always.”

Vivienne rolled her eyes, or tried to. “You can’t know what this is like.”

Mei-Lin turned her head, eyes sharp. “You think I haven’t lost anyone? I had a life, too. I had someone. Jia. The first girl I ever loved. She’s gone now. But I still think about her, every night, sometimes every hour. Even when I’m with Zhao. Even when it should be good.”

Vivienne’s lips parted, surprise flickering. She wiped her eyes again. “How do you do it?” she whispered. “How do you get up every morning and not want to just—jump over the rail?”

Mei-Lin took a long time to answer. When she did, her words were careful, but steady. “I try to remember that it’s not about winning. Not anymore. In the old world, you could win. You could be the best and get what you wanted. Here, it’s different.” She looked out the window, watching a gull dive for nothing. “If we don’t share, we die. All of us. The virus doesn’t care if you’re a Laurent. Or a Sato, or a Zhou. It just wants to see us alone. Easy to pick off.”

Vivienne snorted. “You make it sound simple.”

“It’s not,” Mei-Lin said. “Sometimes I watch Zhao and Aida and feel like a third wheel. Or a spare tire, or whatever the right word is.” She smiled, a little. “I even get jealous of you.”

Vivienne stared. “Why?”

“You know how to get what you want,” Mei-Lin said. “You walk into a room and everyone sees you. I’ve never been like that.”

Vivienne didn’t answer right away. The words didn’t land right. “You’re lying,” she said finally.

Mei-Lin shook her head. “I used to think love was a contest. My mom—before she died—used to warn me: ‘Don’t let them take your place. Don’t let them leave you behind.’ But maybe that’s why it never worked. Families in the old world—they failed because no one wanted to share.” She looked at Vivienne, dead on. “I don’t want to fail. I want to build something better.”

Vivienne let out a shuddering breath, not quite a sob, not quite a laugh. “It’s easy to say,” she said.

Mei-Lin nodded. “It is. But I’m trying.”

They let the silence return, this time gentler.

After a few minutes, Vivienne asked, “Do you think Zhao loves me? Or is it just… necessity?”

Mei-Lin considered. “I think he loves you. Even when he tries not to.”

Vivienne bit her knuckle, then let it go. “I don’t want to lose him. Or you. Or anyone. But it’s like—” She shook her head, unable to finish.

“It’s like poison,” Mei-Lin said. “It’s in the blood.”

Vivienne managed a weak smile. “You sound like Aida.”

Mei-Lin grinned, then nudged Vivienne’s knee with her own. “She’s smarter than she looks.”

Vivienne exhaled, wiped her eyes with the cuff of her shirt. “You really think we can do it?” she asked. “Build something new?”

Mei-Lin leaned back, arms wrapped around her knees. “Maybe. Maybe not. But I’d rather try than just be another ghost on the ship.”

Vivienne thought about that, the old ache in her chest replaced by a dull, persistent hope.

They sat like that, watching the sea, the conversation drifting and looping back on itself.

When they stood, the sky was already darkening, the ship’s lights coming on in regular, comforting intervals.

Vivienne hugged Mei-Lin—awkward, too tight, but real.

“Thank you,” she said.

Mei-Lin squeezed back, hard enough to hurt. “Anytime.”

They walked the corridor in tandem, neither ahead of the other. When they passed the suite, Vivienne paused, then pressed her palm to the door.

She didn’t go in, but she didn’t walk away, either.

Maybe, Mei-Lin thought, that was enough for now.
