Dawn Experiment

#Day 4 - 2:00

Zhao tried to sleep in the owner’s suite. Silk sheets felt like a shroud, the mattress like stone. He paced, lifted bottles from the minibar, then set them down. Lights were dimmed, but the city-sized TV glowed blue, mocking him. After the day’s revelations, he existed in stasis: not moving, not resting, just stuck.

At three a.m., Aura’s voice drifted in like a lullaby. “You are not sleeping.”

“No kidding,” he muttered. “Got any melatonin?”

A panel in the wall clicked open, revealing a safe. Aura explained the override. Inside lay battered leather journals—pages torn out, spines cracked—and an empty cradle marked for three thumb drives. One red-cased drive remained.

He spread the journals on the bed. In French, English, and Mandarin, the handwriting mapped out population control, “genetic refinement,” the “New Ark” project. Guest lists curated for fertility, intelligence, leadership, “unique skills,” and even coded notes on criminal backgrounds deemed useful.

Only in the final journal did he find himself: a photocopied personnel report clipped to a note: “Contingency asset. Monitor closely. Phase 3 backup. Essential if primary fails.” His name circled in red ink.

His hands trembled. He plugged the drive into the TV. File trees labeled “DAWN RESEARCH” and “PHASE THREE” opened—viral blueprints, projections, immune candidate lists—all in the same precise, slightly unhinged handwriting.

He traced one line: “…the immune host will serve as both vector and control for the population. Intimacy is required to prevent full transformation in subjects. Host replacement not currently feasible.” He whispered, “Vector and control.”

He was about to hurl the journals into the ocean when alarms blared. Lights flashed white, then red. Aura’s voice became urgent: “Proximity alert. Vessel detected two kilometers starboard. Intercept in fifteen minutes.”

He grabbed the journals and drive, shoved them into a pillowcase, and sprinted into the corridor. Whatever came next, he’d be ready.

#Day 4 - 3:29

He reached the upper deck ahead of most. Women poured out—nightgowns, tactical vests—crowding the starboard rail. On the horizon, a dark silhouette drew closer: a battered boat listing, its only light a jury-rigged SOS flare.

Captain Verne barked orders: “Medical on standby. Security armed but concealed. No launch without my say.”

The bridge hatch hissed open. Linh, the pilot, emerged, wind-chapped and grim. “They’ll ram us if we get too close. No hail response.”

Dr. Iqbal and Elena gripped Dawn Meters like talismans. Survivors clustered near Aida, who moved quietly among them—checking pulse, offering words of reassurance. They leaned in, hanging on her calm authority even as they stared at the distant vessel.

Kim passed Zhao binoculars. He peered through them: thirty to forty people, pressed to the rails, some motionless. A few lay sprawled, the rest wild-eyed and desperate.

The deck below erupted in strained voices: “They’ll infect us!” “We have to help!” “What if they’re already carriers?”

Verne raised her hand. “Maintain perimeter. Kim, prep decontamination. Linh, keep parallel. Elena, first contact.”

The Blue Oasis slowed. At fifty meters, the refugees’ screams were loud enough to hear without comms. They waved cloths, banners reading HELP and SICK. A few lay limp, silent.

“Elena, tell them to stay on their vessel,” Verne ordered. Elena cupped a loudhailer to her lips.

As Elena spoke, a gaunt man convulsed on the refugee boat’s bow. He dropped to all fours, retched black fluid, then his limbs elongated and joints cracked. His skin split, revealing armored ridges. His mouth unhinged to reveal rows of jagged teeth.

Aida, a few feet from Zhao, gripped his arm. “What is that?”

Before he could answer, the creature lunged at a woman, severing her arm in a spray of blood. Pandemonium broke loose. Survivors on the refugee boat mutated in an instant, becoming predators. The deck became a slaughterhouse. A woman stood at the edge, alone, terrified, her hand reaching toward nothing. She’d probably had a family once. People who loved her. Now she was just hunger in human shape.

Verne’s order rang out: “Full reverse! Break contact now!”

Linh slammed the throttle. The yacht spun away, churning a frothy wake.

Two of the new creatures hurled themselves into the water, swimming toward them with terrifying speed. Maggie and two others raised rifles. “Wait for my mark,” Maggie warned.

The first crawler reached the hull. Maggie fired point-blank, blowing a hole in its head. It kept climbing. Three more shots dropped it into the sea. The others ducked under the yacht. A wet scrape sounded beneath them.

“Engine room, report!” Verne snapped.

Kim’s voice crackled over comms: “Something in the intake, but no damage yet. We can outrun them.”

A dull thud. Then silence.

The yacht surged ahead, leaving the horror behind. Through the binoculars, Zhao watched the refugee boat shrink, a nest of monsters amid the waves.

No one spoke for a long moment. Then Verne’s voice, ragged: “Everyone inside. Secure the hatches. No deck access without clearance.”

Women filed below like ghosts. Zhao lingered at the rail, heart pounding. Behind him, Aida slipped to his side and touched his shoulder. “You okay?”

He shook his head. “No. You?”

She didn’t answer. She squeezed his hand—steady, supportive—not as a starstruck fan but as someone who’d helped him blend into this new reality.

They went below together, each step echoing with the knowledge that unless they found another way, they were all a few percentage points from becoming monsters themselves.

#Day 4 - 5:03

They ran silent for two hours, engines at full, steering due south away from every known lane. Verne enforced a triple watch on every hatch. No one topside without a buddy and a sidearm. Half the crew sedated; the rest clung to rails or vomited in lavatories.

In the command center, leadership faces glowed pale under cold screens.

“Let’s call this what it is,” Dr. Iqbal said, voice trembling. “We have fewer than forty-eight hours before our first case turns. No food, no water, no weather will matter if we’re overrun from within.”

The new Dawn Meter readings flickered on the wall: every number climbing, every hope shrinking.

Verne closed her eyes. “Then we proceed. No more debate.” She glanced at Zhao, pity in her eyes.

Vivienne, still impeccable, laid out a crisp rotation schedule: Medical, Engineering, Security & Comms.

Zhao slammed his fist on the table. “No. If I’m the treatment, I decide. Use readings, highest first—regardless of department. We saw what happens when people turn.”

Isabelle peered at the chart. “But core crew need priority—”

“No one watches someone mutate because they weren’t ‘important’ enough,” Zhao cut in. His voice steadied as heads turned.

Vivienne’s posture faltered. She gathered the printout. “Very well. I’ll adjust by meter readings.”

Verne nodded. Zhao watched the names slot into resource categories—Maggie, Elena, Vivienne, and others. Aida hovered by a viewport, silhouette soft against the dawn. She neither smiled nor frowned—just observed him with a calm that inspired trust. Many survivors still looked to her side-glances more than to him.

The meeting ended. Women drifted out, retreating to their stations. Verne lingered. In a voice meant for him alone, she said, “We didn’t choose this. But we must survive. If you ever want out, tell me. I’ll find a way.”

He nodded but didn’t believe her. There was no out.

At the hatch, he paused and met Aida’s eyes. She pulled her right fist close to her chest, elbow tucked tight against her rib, then jerked her right arm downward in that distinctly Japanese gesture of encouragement he recognized from anime. ”Ganbatte,” she mouthed, nodding once, firmly.

The navigation clock blinked 06:59. He had less than an hour before the first appointment. He retreated to his suite, washed up, and donned the least offensive shirt he could find.

He was ready for anything—except perhaps this.
