Dawn Experiment

# Day 14 - 19:41

The salt wind still clung to his clothes. Every corridor echoed with the steady hush of the storm, but the ship itself was a cocoon: warm, humming, padded against everything that had ever hurt him. Mei-Lin matched his pace, step for step, all the way down C-Deck, then paused at the intersection, waiting for him to say something.

He didn’t. He kept walking, not quite sure where he wanted to end up.

She followed. ”You okay?” Her voice was as quiet as the carpet under their feet.

He stopped, hand on the door to the observation deck. ”Yeah,” he lied, then tried again: ”Just need a minute. You should go ahead.”

She didn’t move. ”Do you mind if I sit with you?”

He blinked. ”I thought you’d want to rest.”

Mei-Lin shrugged, her eyes not quite meeting his. ”We don’t have to talk. I just... like it out here.” She gestured at the row of blue vinyl sofas, all facing the dark glass, the ocean invisible on the far side. ”I can sit at the other end.”

He didn’t want her to, but he didn’t know how to say that, either. He just nodded, and they sat side by side, not touching, not speaking for a long time.

The storm had passed, but the sky was still thick with clouds, backlit by cityless darkness. The faint after-image of the lightning flashed on the horizon, silent now, and the ocean’s surface mirrored the bruised sky perfectly, as if the world had doubled itself just to spite him.

He tried to picture what the city looked like before. He tried to imagine the skyline, LED and steel and concrete, the press of bodies and voices and the hot stink of summer. He tried to conjure his mother’s face, the way she laughed when he burned his first rice cooker, the creases at the corners of her mouth, the chipped nail polish she refused to ever remove.

But all he could see was the ship. This endless, gently decaying ark, floating between past and present, peopled by women whose names he could recite in sleep and whose faces had become more familiar to him than his own.

Mei-Lin broke the silence in mandarin. ”You’re thinking about Vivienne,” she guessed, a half-smile on her lips.

He shook his head. ”No. Not her. Not even Aida.” He let the words hang, then finished: ”I’m thinking about my mom. My dad. The house I grew up in. What it would have been like if I’d tried harder to stay.”

Mei-Lin tucked her feet under her, hands folded neat in her lap. ”From what you’ve told me, you were a good son,” she said. ”Sending money home every month—that’s more than most do. My mother knew families back in Hangzhou who would have given anything for a son like that.”

He huffed a tiny laugh, not sure if she was trying to comfort him or herself. ”That’s not the same as being there. I just disappeared. Left her with a bigger apartment and an empty seat at dinner.”

Mei-Lin was quiet, then: ”My family never had dinner together. My father worked late every night. My mother never cooked.” She leaned back, letting her head rest against the vinyl, watching the slow dance of lightning off the bow. ”I used to think maybe I’d have one of those families, someday. The kind in TV shows. Now I think maybe it was always a fairy tale.”

He wanted to say something comforting, but all he had was honesty. ”Do you ever feel like this whole thing is fake? That it’s just the virus or the protocols or the lack of options that makes us…like this?”

She looked at him, eyes shining. ”Maybe. But maybe it doesn’t matter. In the end, we’re still here. Still breathing.”

He nodded, the ache in his chest dulling a little. ”Sometimes I wonder if it’s real. If it will last when—if—the world ever comes back.”

She considered that, then: ”Does anything last? Even before, everything could be taken away. Earthquake, pandemic, bad exam. You just try to build something anyway.”

He smiled. ”That’s what you like? Building things?”

Mei-Lin blushed, ducking her head. ”It’s what I’m good at. Cooking, fixing, making people better. Maybe that’s enough.”

He thought about Vivienne, about Aida. About how much they each craved something he could never fully give—admiration, obedience, the fantasy of absolute safety. He wondered, for the first time, what Mei-Lin wanted from him.

He asked her.

She shrugged again, but didn’t look away this time. ”You,” she said, as if it were obvious. ”I would have liked you before the world ended. Would have asked you out, maybe, if you noticed me.”

He laughed, shocked at the surge of emotion. ”I would have. If we’d ever crossed paths.”

She smiled. ”We might have. I was at Fudan. You were at Jiaotong, right? Same metro line. We probably passed each other a dozen times.”

He stared at her, the coincidence settling over him like the blanket they’d shared. All those years, never knowing. It took the end of the world to bring them together.”

He nodded, wondering at the parallel lives they’d led in the same city, never intersecting until the end of everything.

She laughed, and the sound was pure relief. ”Me too. Everyone was. Now it’s too late for that.”

He looked at her—really looked, the way he’d forced himself not to when they first ended up on the ship together. She was plain, by the standards of Aida or Vivienne: curves that filled her clothes naturally rather than demanding attention like Aida’s did or perfect symmetry like Vivienne, just a softness in her features that made her look like someone who’d remember your favorite tea or notice when you hadn’t slept, and eyes—warm brown with flecks of gold near the pupils—that held yours with quiet confidence whenever she spoke. Her long wavy hair cascaded past her shoulders, somehow always managing to escape whatever clip or band she used to tame it, a few strands perpetually falling across her face; her hands were square and strong, with a small, neat scar across the palm that he’d noticed the first time she’d passed him a mug of tea, back when they were still strangers thrown together by apocalypse.

She looked like home.

He said it, not meaning to, and she blushed even deeper.

She reached over, took his hand, and held it in her lap.

He felt something loosen in his chest. Maybe it was the day, maybe it was the storm, maybe it was just the exhaustion of wanting something he could never have until now.

He squeezed her hand, and she squeezed back.

”I’m glad you’re here,” he said. ”I’m glad it’s you.”

She looked at him, eyes warm, waiting. Not asking. Just... present.

He looked at her, eyes stinging. ”You’re real,” he said, voice breaking. ”You’re the only one who makes me feel like myself. No games. No drama. Just...home.”

She kissed him then, quick and soft, the kind of kiss you’d give someone you’d known all your life and only just realized you loved.

He kissed her back, and when they pulled apart, her eyes were wet but she was smiling.

She leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder, and for a while, they watched the ocean and said nothing.

Her fingers tightened on his. Just once. A small thing, but he felt it.

Then, barely above a whisper: ”I had a girlfriend, before the world ended. Jia.” She was perfect. Smart, funny, the kind of person who made everyone else seem boring.”

He nodded. He’d heard her mention the name, once or twice, but never asked.

Mei-Lin’s fingers traced invisible patterns on his palm. ”When the virus came,” she said, ”Jia was on night patrol. Security team, section C. I’d sneak her dinner sometimes.” She swallowed hard. ”That night—when the owner turned—I heard the screams from the med bay. Jia radioed in a code red, then nothing. By the time Maggie secured the corridor...” Her voice dropped to a whisper. ”When the lifeboat returned to Blue Oasis, I found her. Just another shape under a bloodstained sheet. Her radio was still crackling beside her hand. Her sidearm, unfired. The other security team members were laid out in a row, like they were sleeping. I never even got to say goodbye. Maggie threw the bodies overboard before I could... before I could touch her hand one last time. I watched from the deck as they slid her into the water, her face covered, nothing but a shape disappearing beneath the waves.”

He waited, not wanting to interrupt.

”I wanted to follow her,” Mei-Lin admitted. ”But then you showed up, and so did Aida. And I realized that maybe I could survive. Not because I wanted to, but because someone else needed me to.”

He hugged her tight, and she shook with silent tears.

He didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to.

After a while, she wiped her eyes and looked at him, determined. ”I want to be with you,” she said. ”But I know it can’t be just me. Not now, not with the way things are. Maybe not ever.”

He nodded, feeling the old guilt creep in. ”I’m sorry. I wish I could promise more.”

She smiled. ”It’s enough,” she said. ”Just…don’t disappear, okay?”

He kissed her again, longer this time. ”I won’t,” he promised.

They sat like that, holding hands and listening to the gentle hum of the ship, until the world outside turned from black to a deep, endless blue.

Eventually, they made their way back to the treatment suite. Aida was waiting for them, arms crossed, but her relief was obvious—the tension in her shoulders melting when she saw them.

She’d set out a spread: noodles, pickled vegetables, even a tiny bowl of orange segments—an impossible luxury, given the rationing. She poured tea for each of them, her hands steady but her eyes never quite meeting theirs.

Zhao sat between them, he felt wanted. Not as a vector, or a savior, or a project, but as a person. As part of something bigger than himself.

Aida broke the silence first, her voice soft. ”You okay?”

He nodded, and she nodded back.

They ate in comfortable silence, punctuated by the clink of chopsticks and the occasional laugh.

When they finished, Aida cleared the dishes while Mei-Lin wiped down the table. Zhao poured the last of the tea and watched them, these women who had saved him, and who he’d saved in return.

He felt the urge to say something, to mark the moment, but nothing seemed big enough. Instead, he just sat there, memorizing the way the light caught in their hair, the way their hands moved when they thought no one was watching, the way they looked at each other and at him.

It was nothing like his old home, but maybe that was the point.

He didn’t know if it would last, or if anything could. But for the first time since the world ended, he felt okay with not knowing.

He watched the two of them, the people who had chosen him, and let himself believe that maybe, just maybe, this was enough.

He was enough.

And for tonight, that was all he needed.
