Daily Intelligence System: Don't Kill Me, Honey!

Chapter 976: Chapter 246: Chen Jie: Am I Really the Garrison Commander?

Darugachi Mansion.

Chen Jie arrived here early in the morning and found the place heavily guarded, seeing Chen Jie approaching.

At the entrance, Huo Bima waved proactively and said, ”Hundred Households Chen.”

”Greetings, Lord Thousand Households.” Chen Jie cupped his fists towards Huo Bima, acknowledging that in terms of official rank, Huo Bima, being a directly subordinate thousand-household officer of the Darugachi Mansion, held a position above Chen Jie.

Chen Jie cupped his fists, and Huo Bima replied, ”Hey, we’re all family, no need for formality, come on, my lord and the commandery princess are waiting for you in the main hall.”

”Waiting for me? Lord Thousand Households is too kind; I, a mere hundred households, dare not trouble the two superiors to wait for me.”

Huo Bima laughed, ”Hundred Households Chen, you are not just an ordinary person now; you are the savior of the entire Huangzhou Prefecture. If it weren’t for you, our Huangzhou Prefecture would have been overrun by the beast. Brother Chen, there’s no need for modesty.”

Hearing this, Chen Jie cupped his fists and said, ”It was a coincidence, a coincidence. I’m flattered.”

Huo Bima laughed and said, ”Haha, alright, let’s stop flattering each other here. Let’s go inside so as not to keep the commandery princess and Lord Kuo Kuo waiting.”

Kuo Kuo refers to Wang Baobao, whose Mulan name is Kuokuo Timur.

Chen Jie nodded and followed Huo Bima inside the mansion. The situation within the mansion was far stricter than at first, presenting military-style management.

Everywhere was guarded by soldiers, appearing quite tense and stern.

Chen Jie followed Huo Bima directly into the main hall, a large meeting room. At this time, Wang Baobao was seated at the main position, with the commandery princess sitting beside him, and seated below them were various thousand-household officers involved in this battle,

including four thousand-household officers from the Black Cavalry and six thousand-household officers defending the city.

Also standing behind Zhao Ya were Ah Da, Ah Er, and Ah San.

Everyone stood properly, and when Chen Jie entered, Wang Baobao glanced at him and smiled, ”Jiu Si is here, have a seat.”

Upon hearing these words, several thousand-household officers looked at the position Wang Baobao indicated, surprisingly above them, and immediately frowned; they were thousand-household officers, how could a hundred-household officer sit above them?

Thinking of this, each of them felt uncomfortable.

However, with Wang Baobao inviting him to sit, they dared not voice dissent.

Zhao Ya also looked over and said, ”Jiu Si, sit next to me at the lower hand position.”

Upon hearing this, Chen Jie went over and directly sat at Zhao Ya’s lower hand position, prompting the people below to frown, thinking indeed his position was achieved through connections.

With these thoughts, everyone felt a certain way, but didn’t say much.

They knew it was Chen Jiusi who saved Huangzhou Prefecture City, but in the officialdom, rank mattered; even with significant accomplishments, Chen Jiusi couldn’t just reign over them arbitrarily.

Consider that after Qi Tongwei became a hero in the anti-drug campaign, he could only remain at a grassroots level, but after becoming Secretary Liang’s son-in-law, he became a department head.

Thus, achievements don’t necessarily equate to high rank, and in this meeting, rank was emphasized.

So while a group of thousand-household officers sat at the lower hand position, Chen Jiusi sat at the upper hand, which immediately incited jealousy among those with less ability but strong official ambitions.

Chen Jie understood what these thousand-household officers were thinking, but he didn’t care; to not be envied is a sign of mediocrity, and Chen Jie wasn’t afraid of their envy, considering them inept individuals.

Among those present, aside from Wang Baobao and the commandery princess, only Huo Bima earned a higher regard from Chen Jie.

As for the others, they were unimpressive.

Chen Jie sat in the commandery princess’s position, noticing two empty positions opposite the commandery princess, with Huo Bima sitting directly across from him.

Chen Jie asked, ”Commandery Princess, who are we waiting for?”

Zhao Ya replied, ”Hmm, the two masters had a battle with Han Miaozhen yesterday and got slightly injured. They will join us once they’re done healing. Let’s wait a bit.”

”Oh, oh.”

Chen Jie nodded, then looked at Zhao Ya and asked, ”How did the two masters fare yesterday against Han Miaozhen, and can they withstand Han Miaozhen’s future attacks?”

Upon hearing this, Zhao Ya replied, ”Hmm, there shouldn’t be much of an issue. Although the two masters were injured, Han Miaozhen wasn’t unharmed either. As for specifics, we’ll discuss once the two masters arrive.”

”Hmm.”

Chen Jie responded with a sound, and Zhao Ya then asked, ”Did you settle matters at home after returning yesterday?”

Chen Jie said, ”Thank you for your concern, Commandery Princess, matters at home have been properly settled.”

Zhao Ya, hearing this, nodded gently and said, ”Hmm, good, that’s good.”

With that, the two stopped their casual conversation, and suddenly someone outside announced, ”The two masters have arrived.”

Upon hearing this, Wang Baobao, Zhao Ya, and everyone present stood up, watching as two elderly figures walked in from outside.

Among them, one wore a white robe, whom Chen Jie recognized as He Yishou, Master He.

As for the one in the black robe, he was an unfamiliar elder, sporting black hair and fierce eyes. If He Yishou’s demeanor was harsh, this black-robed elder’s gaze could only be described as venomous.

Indeed, this was Gui Yannian, the elder of the Xuanbing Second Elder!

The Xuanbing Second Elder, Turtle and Crane, implies longevity and auspiciousness, but in the Jianghu, they are often described with words like ruthless, sinister methods, and court’s lackeys.

The two entered the room and naturally sat at the lower hand position of Wang Baobao.

Wang Baobao actually wanted to reserve the main position for them, but they were unwilling to accept; with any other Darugachi, they would have taken it without hesitation.

However, Wang Baobao held another identity, that of the Young Prince.

As the court’s tribute, how could they commit such a transgressive act, and thus they insisted Wang Baobao sit above in the main position.
