Chapter 955: Chapter 242: Bloody Battle at Huangzhou Prefecture, Fiery Fire Aids Heroic City

”Hall Master, based on current rough estimates, we have around 150,000 refugees, among which there are 70,000 or 80,000 able-bodied men. Additionally, a large number of refugees are gathering from Huanggang, Huangpo, and Yong’an, indicating that we absolutely have no shortage of soldiers.”

Upon hearing this, Chu Tian laughed heartily, ”Good, good, pass on my orders; distribute food to the entire army, dole out more this time, tell this crowd of refugees to eat their fill, then charge for me, take Huangzhou Prefecture, and I’ll give them meat to eat!”

”Understood.”

Upon hearing this, the subordinate beside him immediately issued the order.

Their method of driving the refugees was through food; distributing food before battle, filling the bellies of the common folk so they would become the suicide squad in their hands.

Actually, the Zoroastrian Sect didn’t need these common folk to really scale the city walls or even take Huangzhou Prefecture.

Because the main force of Zoroastrian Sect consisted of only over ten thousand well-trained soldiers, but the refugees were very useful, as they could deplete a large amount of the enemy’s military resources, such as arrows and rolling logs and stones!

These are all necessities for the city guards.

In the historical annals of warfare, the attacking side often needed several times the troops of the defending side to achieve victory, especially when the enemy was well-equipped.

Chu Tian would never let his soldiers become the suicide squad; that role was for those useless refugees.

At this point, he ordered the grain distribution, and in the tent, Chu Tian looked at Zhong Guang beside him and said, ”Old Zhong, if we take Huangzhou Prefecture City today, when Han Dharma King arrives tomorrow, he’ll surely be greatly surprised, haha... Then you and I will have achieved great merit.”

Zhong Guang looked at Chu Tian and said, ”Hall Master, this time it seems you’ll be promoted.”

Chu Tian replied, ”Haha, if I’m promoted, won’t the position of Hall Master be yours, Old Zhong? Congratulations, congratulations.”

Zhong Guang said, ”Haha, no matter how I’m promoted, I’m still just a pawn in your hands, Big Brother. Wherever you point, I strike.”

Seeing Zhong Guang speak this way, Chu Tian felt very pleased, as if he were already standing on Huangzhou Prefecture City walls, completing his grand accomplishment, becoming an indispensable talent of the Holy Sect.

Meanwhile outside, each of the 5,000 Zoroastrian Sect soldiers received their food, these 5,000 soldiers were placed into refugee groups, becoming squad leaders of refugee groups.

These Zoroastrian Sect soldiers were also very smart; they knew that one person couldn’t possibly govern so many people, so they picked agents from among the common folk, calling them vice squad leaders to manage the entire refugee groups.

Some people are naturally very ambitious, once appointed as vice squad leader, they suddenly felt they were important, managing dozens of people.

They began helping the Zoroastrian Sect, oppressing these refugees, being the ones most adept at bullying others.

When Chu Tian issued the grain distribution order, it was relayed layer by layer, until the grain ended up in the hands of the vice squad leaders.

The vice squad leaders then called for the people to distribute the grain; naturally, those they had good relations with received more, while those they looked down upon received less.

Thus, after distributing grain, they still had a bag of good food left in their hands.

It’s important to note that when the grain was initially allocated, it was given based on one jin per household member.

But by the time it reached the bottom, after passing through several hands, each refugee only received two to three taels of grain.

The refugees looked at the meager amount of food they received, feeling exasperated with nowhere to vent; these scoundrels truly had no conscience, but they had no choice but to endure.

Then the crowd of common folk returned to their temporary dwellings to start cooking.

The children at home smelled the aroma of food wafting from outside, and swallowed their saliva.

The wife looked at the temporary cooking pits outside, with smoke rising, and the man squatting there tending the fire, tears couldn’t help but fall from her eyes; she knew that once the cow horn sounded, her husband would lead the charge as part of the suicide squad.

The soldiers on the city walls had bows, rolling logs, and stones; her husband faced a nine-to-one chance of death!

Thinking of this, she couldn’t help but burst into tears; soon after, the meal was cooked, not a good meal, for the sorghum rice even contained some wheat bran, and even seemed partially uncooked.

But this pot of food, which even the dogs of rich families wouldn’t eat, appeared as a delicacy in the eyes of this family.

The child swallowed back his saliva, wanting to reach out to eat, only to have his hand slapped away by the wife with a loud ”pop,” because the sorghum rice in the pot wasn’t much; if the man had a bigger appetite, he could eat it all by himself.

But now he had to take care of a wife and a child.

”Boo hoo...”

The child, only about five or six years old, cried after being hit by his mother.

Seeing this, the man said, ”Why hit the child?”

The woman cried, ”This little wretch, doesn’t know to pity his parents; husband, you eat, you eat...”

Hearing this, the man said, ”I’m all right, eating more, eating less, doesn’t matter to me; you two eat, eat your fill, and I’ll be happy.”

Upon hearing this, the wife broke into sobs.

The child beside didn’t yet understand what his father was about to face.

At this point, the man took three broken bowls and placed them in front of himself, then filled a large half bowl of rice and passed it to the child: ”Er Bao, eat.”

The child looked at his mother; the mother said nothing, and the man then filled a small half bowl for the wife: ”Wife, you eat too.”

”I’ll watch you eat...”

The small child, upon hearing, looked at his mother, and then his father; the man said, ”Er Bao eats first, set a good example for your mother!”
