As a result, the grain prices in Mianshui could remain stable for a short time.

But this drove those who were hoarding crops out of speculation mad, with every single one of them trying to find out just how much inventory Chen Jiusi still had.

Yelu Mansion!

”Commoner Zhou Chu pays respects to Lord Yelu.”

Zhou Chu gave a bow with his fist in his other hand to Yelu, who glanced at Zhou Chu and said, ”Oh, Zhou Chu, ah, ha-ha-ha, no need for such formalities, please, have a seat, sit.”

Yelu gestured for Zhou Chu to sit.

Upon sitting down, Yelu clapped his hands and said, ”Serve the dishes.”

Several dishes were quickly served in front of Zhou Chu, amongst which was Yelu’s favorite, sashimi, an essential item.

At this moment, Yelu gestured to Zhou Chu and said, ”Try this; it’s river puffer fish brought in from the seaside. I just had the chef prepare it, it’s very fresh.”

Zhou Chu looked down and saw on the plate before him ice, upon which lay fish flesh transparent and thin as a cicada’s wing.

It was indeed river puffer fish sashimi.

Zhou Chu picked up some with his chopsticks and took a bite, immediately showing a surprised and delighted expression as he said, ”Hmm, tasty, very fresh, indeed worthy of being top level sashimi.”

”Ah, this isn’t top level; the most top level is Dragon Pattern River Puffer Fish, now that’s top level sashimi.”

Upon hearing this, Zhou Chu said, ”Lord, I’ve heard that the Dragon Pattern River Puffer Fish is extremely poisonous, and it can even kill a strong fighter from the Wolf Smoke Realm.”

Yelu replied, ”That’s right, but Zhou Chu, you don’t know, the more poisonous something is in this world, the tastier it is.”

”Just like that Chen Jiusi!”

As Yelu said this, he looked at Zhou Chu and said, ”Zhou Chu, I’ve heard that you and Chen Jiusi have an excellent relationship?”

Zhou Chu replied, ”Hmm, one could say we are comrades in life and death. Back in Xiantao Village, that’s when I met him, and after entering Mianshui City, we supported each other. I used to think our relationship was deep and unbreakable, but...”

”Alas, let’s not talk about these things.”

Zhou Chu spoke to Yelu, who in turn fixed his gaze on Zhou Chu and said, ”It looks like Brother Zhou Chu has some frustrations bottled up within him.”

Zhou Chu said, ”He, ah, doesn’t treat me as a human being.”

Yelu said, ”Brother Zhou Chu, you need not feel this way. He may not treat you as a person, but I do. That Chen Jiusi’s rise to power was because of my support. I can lift him to a position of power, and I can lift you to a position of power, too. Do you want to be the leader of the Fishing Guild?”

Zhou Chu frowned and said, ”This... Lord Yelu, Chen Jiusi is not easy to deal with!”

”Ha-ha, how difficult can he be to deal with? Could he possibly contend with the court by himself? And I represent the court. Whoever I support, that person will rise to a position of power.”

”Zhou Chu, do you want to rise to a position of power?”

”I do!”

Zhou Chu thought for a moment and then nodded fiercely: ”If I didn’t want to rise to a position of power, I wouldn’t be sitting in front of you today, Lord.”

”Good, if you want to rise to a position of power, then it’s easy; I’ll help you get rid of Chen Jiusi, and you will be the leader of the Fishing Guild.”

Hearing this, Zhou Chu looked at Yelu and said, ”Yes, thank you for your support, Lord.”

Yelu chuckled and replied, ”You’re welcome, no need to mention it.”

”However, Zhou Chu, it won’t be easy to topple Chen Jiusi. We’ll have to take it step by step.”

”Lord Yelu, what can I do?”

After considering for a moment, Yelu said, ”First you need to do something for me.”

”Lord, what is it?”

”Are you aware that Mianshui is short on grain?”

Yelu looked at Zhou Chu, who replied, ”I’m aware.”

Yelu said, ”Chen Jiusi has a batch of grain.”

Zhou Chu replied, ”Indeed, stored in the warehouse.”

Yelu commanded, ”Burn it for me!”

”What!”

Zhou Chu’s eyes suddenly widened: ”Burn it?”

Yelu said, ”Burn it.”

Yelu was determined; the grain in Chen Jiusi’s store was significantly affecting the Black Market’s grain prices. He had already borrowed grain from Yong’an Prefecture, and his old classmate had been very helpful; 100,000 stones of grain were already being transferred and would arrive in about ten days.

But now, Mianshui’s grain prices just wouldn’t rise, and that wouldn’t do. In Yelu’s mind, the price should be between 50 and 60 cents per catty.

That is, the grain prices at the very least should increase fivefold; that is to say, once he got his hands on it, these 100,000 stones of grain would generate a fivefold profit margin.

This was his true intention.

But now, with Chen Jiusi’s grain store continuously selling grains, many citizens were waiting and watching, and the Black Market’s prices dared not rise too sharply.

Therefore, the price only doubled, which was not what Yelu had anticipated. If he earned just that amount, he wouldn’t be content.

So, he thought of burning Chen Jiusi’s stored grain, making Antai Grain Store run out of grain to sell, naturally causing the Black Market’s grain prices to rise. After ten days, once the price increased to 50 or 60 cents, he could sell it off and make a big fortune.

That money would be sufficient to cover his recent losses.

Therefore, Chen Jiusi’s grain absolutely had to be burned.

And Zhou Chu was a very useful pawn. Zhou Chu’s allegiance to him was something Yelu was suspicious of, and this was the perfect opportunity to truly test Zhou Chu.

To see whether his allegiance was genuine or feigned.

Therefore, he directly ordered Zhou Chu to go and set fire to Chen Jie’s grain warehouse.

At this moment, Zhou Chu shook his head, saying, ”I can’t, I cannot burn it.”

Yelu frowned and asked, ”Zhou Chu, then were all your earlier words about pledging your loyalty to me and toppling Chen Jiusi just lip service?”

”Is your approach to me part of some scheme?”

Yelu narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing Zhou Chu, who then clasped his fist and said, ”Lord Yelu, I truly pledge my allegiance: I share an enmity so deep with Chen Jiusi that we cannot coexist. But to ask me to burn grains, I can’t do that. The lives of ten thousand citizens of Mianshui hang on this batch of grain. I, Zhou Chu, can do unscrupulous acts, but I cannot play with so many peoples’ lives and deaths.”

”So, Lord Yelu, I cannot burn it. If I did, my conscience would forever be burdened, and I doubt I could live in peace.”

Zhou Chu looked at Yelu as he spoke.

Yelu scrutinized Zhou Chu carefully, and then suddenly laughed, saying, ”I never expected you to be a person with a sense of great justice. Well then, rest assured and go burn it, there’s no need to worry about the grain; I have already sent people to bring grain into Mianshui.”
