Li Zhifang and Wang Baozhu woke up early. Wang Baozhu looked out of the window and saw snowflakes still fluttering outside, with a thick layer of snow on the ground, which made her somewhat unwilling to move.

She kicked Li Zhifang: ”I’m hungry, go get something to eat.”

Li Zhifang was also reluctant to move, and even less willing to leave the warmth of the bed.

”How about we wait a bit longer?”

After waiting a while, Wang Baozhu was starving and kept urging, so Li Zhifang put on his clothes and got out of bed.

As soon as he got up, Li Zhifang felt a chill.

They hadn’t added any firewood last night, and now the room was indeed a bit cold.

He fetched some firewood to light the stove outside, and heated up some leftovers from last night’s dinner to bring to Wang Baozhu.

The two of them made do with that meal.

After eating, Wang Baozhu felt cold and unwilling to move, and Li Zhifang didn’t want to go out. It wasn’t as warm anywhere in the house as it was on the heated brick bed, so he took off his coat and crawled back into the covers.

Li Zhipeng, Li Zhiping, and Li Zhikang chose this time to visit.

Li Zhipeng knocked on the door from outside, and Li Zhifang shouted after hearing it: ”Who is it?”

Li Zhipeng replied with annoyance: ”It’s me, your second brother.”

Li Zhifang quickly nudged Wang Baozhu: ”Quick, get up, second brother is here.”

Wang Baozhu, although reluctant, had no choice but to get up and put on her clothes.

As he was getting dressed, Li Zhifang said, ”Second brother, wait a moment.”

He jumped off the bed, put on his shoes and went to open the door, while Wang Baozhu muttered, ”Calling on us in such cold weather, won’t let people be at peace.”

She put on her clothes and folded the quilt.

Just after she had folded the quilt and hadn’t tidied up yet, Li Zhifang led Li Zhipeng and the others into the house.

Upon entering the house, Li Zhipeng and his companions couldn’t help but frown.

The smell in the room was really unbearable.

Back when Anning and Li Zhifang were not divorced, the house was always tidy, and during winter, fires were lit in every room, making everywhere warm. Moreover, she also paid attention to ventilation. On good days, she would open the windows to air out the house, making it feel fresh and clean when entering.

Plus, Anning also valued privacy, she was a refined person.

When guests visited, she rarely took people into the bedroom, usually inviting them to sit in the main living room.

But Li Zhifang and Wang Baozhu were really not those particular types.

Now, just the two of them at home, they had lit a stove only in the bedroom to save trouble, not bothering at all with the other rooms. Not to mention the other rooms, even the living room was too cold to stay in.

Furthermore, Li Zhifang was not one to do housework, believing that chores were a woman’s job, and he never cleaned up either inside or outside the house.

And Wang Baozhu was enormously lazy, she was even unwilling to cook, making do with whatever was easiest, let alone cleaning the house. She would rather spend her time getting dressed up and going out.

As such, Li Zhifang’s house was truly a messy sight with all sorts of smells.

The room had an old sofa, piled high with various clothes, it was unclear whether they were dirty or clean, but some clothes had gathered dust.

The table held pots and bowls, several of which were unwashed, with some still containing half-eaten rice, and others having grown mold.

There was also a jar of soaked garlic with the lid left open, emitting a strong smell of vinegar and garlic.

And there was another large plate, which also contained two rotten eggs, constantly emitting a stench.

Additionally, the shoes of Zhifang were being roasted on the stove inside the house, making the odor even more unbearable.

Li Zhipeng was a clean person.

He covered his nose as soon as he entered the house.

Li Zhiping and Li Zhikang also shook their heads as they looked around, thinking to themselves that Zhifang could really endure such conditions; they couldn’t stay in such an environment even for a day.

”Sit on the kang,” he suggested.

Zhifang saw there was nowhere else to sit in the house, so he asked Li Zhipeng and the others to sit on the kang.

But Li Zhipeng noticed that the kang in Li Zhifang’s house was also unclean, cluttered with things, the places not for sleeping were dusty, and he really couldn’t bring himself to sit down.

He stood aside, and his sharp eyes noticed that the cord of the telephone on the table by the kang was unplugged.

Zhifang signaled to Wang Baozhu: ”Treasure Bead, go get some sunflower seeds or something.”

Wang Baozhu crisply responded: ”Okay.”

She was about to get off the kang when Li Zhipeng said, ”No need to bother, we will stand for a while and then leave.”

He looked at Zhifang and asked, ”Why didn’t you answer the phone when our mom called you last night?”

Zhifang was stunned: ”Phone call? No, I didn’t hear the phone ringing.”

Li Zhipeng then asked Wang Baozhu: ”Did you hear it?”

Wang Baozhu’s heart skipped a beat, realizing that the three brothers of Li Zhipeng might be here to cause trouble, and she would never admit that she hung up the phone: ”I didn’t hear anything either, I was dead asleep yesterday... What’s wrong? Did something happen?”

”Hehe.”

Li Zhipeng sneered, without mincing words, went to the phone, picked up the unplugged cord, and asked, ”Who unplugged the telephone cord? Seems like your family just keeps the phone for decoration, or do you usually not plug in the cord anyway?”

”Who unplugged it?”

Zhifang was also confused: ”No one unplugged it, it was fine when we went to sleep last night, maybe a rat chewed it off.”

Li Zhipeng didn’t respond to Zhifang; he just stared at Wang Baozhu, ”Tell me, did you or did you not answer the phone last night?”

Wang Baozhu was greatly startled and shrank back: ”No, I really didn’t answer it.”

Li Zhipeng’s eyes narrowed slightly: ”Fifth, Lao Liu, beat these two beasts up for me.”

Li Zhiping and Li Zhikang were already furious, hearing the second brother’s command, without a word, they grabbed and started beating them.

Wang Baozhu screamed in panic, while Zhifang was still confused, trying to dodge while asking, ”What’s this for? Why start beating without asking right from wrong? If you keep hitting, I’m going to get angry.”

”Without asking right from wrong?”

Li Zhipeng, with a cold face, kicked Zhifang’s legs, ”Kneel down.”

Zhifang involuntarily fell to his knees with a thud.

Suppressing his anger, Li Zhipeng coldly said, ”Do you know that our mother nearly died last night? Last night your Jing Han had a fever, mom called you guys to come over, but Treasure Bead picked up the phone and then hung up. Afraid mom would call again, she even unplugged the phone cord. Mom had no choice but to come over in the snow and wind. She fell halfway here, couldn’t get up, couldn’t find anyone to help, in such cold weather mom crawled in the snow. If it weren’t for Ning keeping an eye out and going to look for her, we might have found her frozen stiff by now.”

”What?”

Zhifang was startled, suddenly raising his head, looking at Li Zhipeng in disbelief, ”Second brother, you must be joking, right?”

”Damn it.”

Li Zhipeng was so angry he swore, slapping Zhifang across the face, swelling it up instantly: ”Do I look like I’m joking? Even if I’m good for nothing, I wouldn’t joke about mom. Zhifang, after all, mom has treated you so well, and this is how you treat her. If something had happened to mom, I would have chopped you alive.”
