The Comeback of the Cannon-Fodder Supporting Actress

Chapter 578: Chapter 569: The Stepmother Who Refuses to Be a Stepping Stone 57

Anning was pulling the cart when she arrived at Li Baolai’s house, but Li Baolai had already taken Li Jinghan to the hospital.

Li Zhiying carried Zhang Fengfeng into the house. Anning was paying close attention to Zhang Fengfeng’s condition. After entering the house and placing Zhang Fengfeng on the kang, Anning stayed by her side.

She said to Seventh Uncle Li and Li Zhiying, ”Thank you, Uncle Qi and brother Zhiying for your help. I’ll stay here to watch over her. My elder brother and Jingming will come over soon. You two go back to sleep first. Once we get to the hospital and her condition stabilizes, I’ll call you.”

Seventh Uncle Li was still very concerned, ”Can you manage by yourself?”

Anning smiled a little, ”I can, definitely.”

Zhang Fengfeng was able to speak by this time. She said to Seventh Uncle Li, ”Uncle Qi, you go back first. I really owe you one for today’s ordeal.”

Seventh Uncle Li waved his hand, dismissing the gratitude, ”What is this fuss about? We’re all family. No need for such formalities.”

He thought for a moment and then said, ”Alright, then Zhiying and I will go back first. If anything happens, call us.”

Anning nodded, ”Okay, I won’t see you out. Please take care on your way back.”

After Seventh Uncle Li and Li Zhiying left, Anning encouraged Zhang Fengfeng to close her eyes and rest.

Zhang Fengfeng had been outside for a long time and was chilled to the bone, even though she was now on the kang with a thick quilt over her. Her hands and feet were still as cold as ice.

Anning kept rubbing her hands and feet, trying everything to make her a bit more comfortable.

Zhang Fengfeng lay on the kang, tears glistening in the corners of her eyes.

The Old Madam had been strong all her life; she was in a lot of distress at this moment, but she didn’t want to worry Anning, so she cried quietly.

Li Zhiyuan and Li Jingming arrived quickly.

As soon as they entered the house, Li Zhiyuan asked, ”What happened? How is mom?”

Anning did not get off the kang. She said to Li Jingming, ”Jingming, drive the car into the yard. Carry Grandma to the car, and I’ll grab a few things before coming right over.”

Li Zhiyuan and Li Jingming carried Zhang Fengfeng to the car together, and Anning brought out a thick quilt along with Zhang Fengfeng’s identity card and other things.

Once the four of them were in the car, Anning coaxed Zhang Fengfeng to sleep before quietly telling Li Zhiyuan the situation.

Li Zhiyuan was filled with fear and rage upon hearing this.

If Li Zhifang were in front of him right now, he would surely give Li Zhifang a beating.

Not just Li Zhiyuan, even Li Jingming was almost furious to death.

Yet, he had to forcefully restrain himself, remembering that he was the driver now, and any loss of control could result in a disastrous accident.

They reached the Provincial City just before dawn primarily because the roads were treacherous, and they couldn’t drive fast.

Anning had contacted Li Zhicheng shortly before reaching the Provincial City. Li Zhicheng and his wife were waiting at the Provincial Second Hospital. They drove straight there, and upon arrival, Li Zhicheng and Liu Ru hurried over with a hospital wheelchair.

Anning and Li Jingming helped Zhang Fengfeng onto the wheelchair. The doctors had everything arranged and took her straight for an examination.

While Anning and Li Jingming were accompanying Zhang Fengfeng during her examination, Li Zhicheng and Li Zhiyuan went to handle the hospital admission procedures.

They were truly frightened and decided that Zhang Fengfeng must stay in the hospital for a while to be thoroughly observed.

After the examination, the doctor called Li Zhicheng out for a talk.

”The Old Madam’s fundamental health is actually quite good, otherwise, this time it would have really been dangerous. By the way, did you perform any first aid earlier?”

Li Zhicheng thought for a moment: ”My fourth sister found the Old Madam collapsed in the snow, and she performed first aid. Later, from home to the Provincial City, it has been her taking care of everything on the way.”

The doctor nodded, ”Your family did very well. Otherwise, I’m afraid the Old Madam might not have been able to regain consciousness in the snow. You know, in cases like the Old Madam’s, the sooner it’s found, the better...”

The doctor spoke in detail about Zhang Fengfeng’s condition with Li Zhicheng: ”She should be hospitalized for observation, and pay close attention to her heart.”

Li Zhicheng thanked the doctor, and by the time he went to the ward, Zhang Fengfeng had already started receiving IV fluids.

Li Zhicheng, with red eyes, said a few words to Li Zhiyuan, then turned to Anning: ”This time, we really owe you a big one for our mom’s incident. The doctor just said that if it weren’t for your timely rescue, our mom would have been in real danger.”

Li Jingming was quite puzzled: ”Elder sister-in-law, how do you know first aid?”

Anning smiled: ”Well, after our mom was diagnosed with a heart problem, I was so worried that I read a lot of medical books and even went to a doctor to learn first aid skills. Fortunately, I learned them, so it came in handy now.”

She spoke lightly, but the Li brothers knew that it had not been easy for Anning.

For someone with no medical background to self-study medical books is incredibly difficult, and Anning didn’t know any doctors. She must have said many nice words and perhaps even given gifts to learn first aid skills from someone.

Li Zhicheng and Li Zhiyuan were truly grateful to Anning.

They were also deeply moved.

They all knew that Zhang Fengfeng had a heart condition, but none of them took the time to learn first aid. Yet Anning, the former daughter-in-law, did, showing her genuine care for Zhang Fengfeng.

To see if someone is good or not is not about how pleasant they talk but through everyday interactions and the details within—the way Anning constantly thinks about the elderly, never taking out her divorce with Li Zhifang on the Li family, treating the children as always. Her character is truly beyond reproach.

Li Zhiyuan sincerely thanked Anning: ”We really owe you a big one this time. Our mom’s life was saved by you. Without you, I, I can’t even dare to imagine...”

He couldn’t continue and turned his back to wipe away tears.

At this time, Liu Ru came over with breakfast. She called a few people over to eat. Anning wanted to take some porridge to feed Zhang Fengfeng, but Liu Ru quickly interjected: ”You eat first; you must be tired and hungry after getting up in the middle of the night, hurry up and rest for a while after you eat. I’ll be here for mom.”

”Alright then.”

Anning smiled and went over to eat with Li Zhicheng and the others.

Zhang Fengfeng was a bit delirious, and it took a while for her to wake up.

The first thing she did upon opening her eyes was not to ask for food or about her illness but to look at Anning and ask, ”Ning, how is Jing Han doing?”

Anning went to her and spoke softly: ”Jing Han is fine; last night Seventh Uncle’s Third drove my dad and Jing Han to the county hospital. Later I called the elder sister-in-law, and she said she’s now looking after dad and Jing Han at the county hospital. She said Jing Han’s fever has already gone down.”

Zhang Fengfeng let out a big sigh of relief, truly relaxing.

After finishing breakfast, Li Zhiyuan gave Li Zhicheng a meaningful glance.

Li Zhicheng understood, and the brothers left the ward.

Standing in the hallway, Li Zhiyuan said angrily: ”Lao Si is becoming more and more unreliable. I think we can’t let mom and dad live in the village anymore. I’m thinking of bringing the elders to live with us in the county.”

Li Zhicheng thought for a moment: ”How about coming to the Provincial City? The conditions are better here, and the doctors have more experience. In case mom has any more health issues, we can get her treatment promptly.”

Li Zhiyuan actually wanted the elders to live with him, being the eldest son and traditionally responsible for caring for the parents.

But he also thought that what Li Zhicheng said made a lot of sense. With Zhang Fengfeng’s poor health, better treatment would be available in the Provincial City. For the sake of the elders’ health, they should consider living there.

”Alright, let’s discuss it with mom in a few days.”

Li Zhiyuan frowned: ”However, we have to seriously talk about Lao Si’s situation. Should you go back, or should I?”

Li Zhicheng shook his head: ”Let the second brother go and ask, and take Fifth and Lao Liu along as well. They need to have a serious talk with Lao Si about what exactly happened. This time, if Lao Si and Wang Baozhu don’t give us a proper explanation, this matter won’t be settled.”

They were truly furious.

In the past, out of brotherly affection for Li Zhifang, they tolerated his unacceptable behavior, and they always tried to clean up after him.

But now, they could no longer put up with it.
