Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

Zhao Nuan Yang, who had been watching the drama unfold from the side, found the whole scene both infuriating and hilarious.

’That old woman is so heartless. The young lady is rescuing her kitten, and not only is she ungrateful, she’s actually mocking the female bodyguard. It’s completely unreasonable.’ At the same time, he found the female bodyguard’s reaction quite amusing as well.

Seeing the female bodyguard fall, Zhao Nuan Yang, who was just passing by, couldn’t just pretend he hadn’t seen anything. After all, the bodyguard had only ended up in this predicament because she was trying to do a good deed. If he walked past without helping, how would he be any different from that heartless old woman?

Fortunately, Zhao Nuan Yang had been practicing with the secret manual given to him by Little Red Carp. So, in the instant the female bodyguard fell, Zhao Nuan Yang had already dashed over, extended his arms, bent his knees slightly, and caught her amidst her terrified scream.

Even after landing in Zhao Nuan Yang’s arms, the female bodyguard didn’t stop screaming.

”AHHHHH...”

The ear-piercing sound made Zhao Nuan Yang frown.

’Doing good deeds is such a hassle. I’m tempted to just drop this bodyguard on the ground.’

”All right, you can stop screaming now. You didn’t hit the ground,” Zhao Nuan Yang said, not wanting to hear that shrill voice any longer. ’This bodyguard is pretty dense. Enough time has passed to fall a hundred meters, let alone from a height of only three or four.’

Hearing a voice beside her, the female bodyguard’s eyes snapped open. They darted around, and when they landed on Zhao Nuan Yang, she was utterly dumbstruck. She forgot to scream; she forgot her fear.

’I... I was actually caught by a... a handsome man. And I’m in his arms!’

Seeing that the female bodyguard had come to her senses, Zhao Nuan Yang set her on the ground and said, ”If you’re okay, then stand on your own.”

”Oh, oh!” The female bodyguard’s face was a little red, though it was unclear if it was from holding her breath while screaming or from shyness. ”Th-thank... thank you!”

”No need to thank me,” Zhao Nuan Yang said with a nod, then turned to leave.

Still shaken, the female bodyguard saw Zhao Nuan Yang leaving and didn’t even bother to pick up her baton from the ground. She hurried after him with small steps and asked, ”Y-You... Hello, what’s your name? You saved me, so I must thank you!”

”I already said you don’t have to thank me.” Zhao Nuan Yang didn’t stop, continuing on his way.

”No, I can’t do that. My father taught me since I was a child to repay a drop of kindness with a gushing spring, let alone a life-saving favor like this.” The female bodyguard kept pace with Zhao Nuan Yang, sneaking glances at his handsome face.

Hearing this, Zhao Nuan Yang suddenly recalled the question he’d had earlier. He stopped and said, ”In that case, you can thank me by truthfully answering a question.”

”Okay, okay! Go ahead and ask. I’ll tell my savior anything he wants to know, without holding anything back.” Seeing Zhao Nuan Yang stop, the female bodyguard was thrilled. Her small, round face grew even redder, and her eyes sparkled with delight.

”Earlier, that woman said she’d have her son come rescue the kitten, so why did you insist on climbing the tree yourself?” Zhao Nuan Yang asked curiously, looking into the bodyguard’s large eyes. ”Besides, you were trying to save the kitten, not deliberately make it fall. Weren’t you angry when that old woman said those things to you?”

Upon hearing Zhao Nuan Yang’s questions, the female bodyguard had a sudden realization. ’No wonder this young man was able to save me—he must have been right here the whole time!’ At this thought, she couldn’t suppress the flutter of joy in her heart.

”Actually, I wasn’t trying to be a hero by climbing the tree. Aunt Wang is the mother of my brother’s colleague. Her son was tragically killed in the line of duty, and when Aunt Wang heard the news, the shock was so great that she suffered a mental breakdown. Her daughter takes care of her now, but the daughter has to work during the day, so Aunt Wang sometimes runs into trouble. I’m responsible for patrolling this area, so I often make a detour to check on her. Aunt Wang doesn’t mean any harm; she’s just not in her right mind,” the female bodyguard explained. ”So please don’t misunderstand her! Me falling out of the tree is my own fault for not being skilled enough. If it were my brother, he could jump down from a tree with no problem at all.”

The female bodyguard didn’t utter a single word of complaint, instead blaming her own lack of skill.

What a kind-hearted bodyguard.

Hearing the female bodyguard’s words, Zhao Nuan Yang smiled gently. His smile was so pure and his eyes so clear, they seemed to shine as brightly as the stars in the heavens.

The female bodyguard gazed at Zhao Nuan Yang’s smile and his eyes, feeling as if she could see her own dazed reflection within them.

”You’re very kind,” Zhao Nuan Yang said with a light chuckle. ”And a good bodyguard!”

”Uh-huh!” the female bodyguard nodded dazedly.

Now that Zhao Nuan Yang knew the truth, he suddenly no longer thought the female bodyguard was a fool. He had praised her without thinking, and after a final nod, he turned to leave.

He was about to be late for work and couldn’t delay any longer.

The female bodyguard stood rooted to the spot, dazed, her mind replaying Zhao Nuan Yang’s compliments.

’You’re very kind!’

’And a good bodyguard!’

Every word was the greatest affirmation for her. The female bodyguard was too moved to speak, her eyes fixed on Zhao Nuan Yang’s retreating back. By the time she came to her senses and thought about chasing after him, she realized he had already entered the museum up ahead.

’Hey, that’s part of my patrol route!’

The female bodyguard, who was about to give chase, stopped in her tracks. She remembered that her baton was still on the side of the road, so she ran back to retrieve it.

The female bodyguard jogged to the museum entrance. Just as she was about to go inside, she suddenly remembered that she had already patrolled the museum and still had other places to go. If she dallied now, she wouldn’t be able to complete her patrol route for the day.

On one side was the handsome young man; on the other was her job.

The female bodyguard hesitated. Finally, gritting her teeth, she turned and walked away, muttering under her breath, ”I’m a good bodyguard, I’m a good bodyguard...”

”Little Pan, why’d you come all the way to the entrance just to walk away again?” Uncle Xu, the gatekeeper, poked his head out of the guardhouse. He looked curiously at the somewhat dazed female bodyguard and asked warmly, ”Is something wrong?”

When she heard the gatekeeper, Uncle Xu, speak, an idea popped into her head. ’I can find out what that handsome young man’s name is and come back to visit another time!’ She immediately turned around and asked with a grin, ”Uncle Xu, who was that young man who just went in?”

When Uncle Xu heard her ask about the person who had just passed, he was taken aback for a moment. Then, a mysterious smile spread across his face. He thought about how the older women at the museum were always praising Zhao Nuan Yang’s good looks and wanting to set him up on dates. ’Little Pan is a young woman, too,’ he thought. ’Perhaps she’s taken a liking to our Zhao Nuan Yang!’
