Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

Hearing Chen Lei’s words, Hua Yusen’s mood instantly soured. ’Nuanyue didn’t even tell me about something so important!’

”So that whole big incident that’s been causing such a stir was related to you,” Hua Yusen said, realization dawning on him. ”And you, you should be thankful Nuanyue and Little Red Carp didn’t get hurt. Otherwise, I would’ve dealt with you a long time ago.”

Chen Lei listened and said with a placating smile, ”If Nuanyue hadn’t been unwilling to take the credit, she definitely would have received a commemorative banner.”

Zhao Nuanyue heard Chen Lei’s voice and came out of the room, her hands still covered in flour. She was planning to make dumplings today.

”Brother Chen, you’re here,” Zhao Nuanyue said with a smile. ”Yu Sen, it’s cold outside. Hurry and invite Brother Chen inside!”

When Chen Lei saw Zhao Nuanyue, he walked straight into the kitchen where she was, put down the gift he was carrying, and said, ”You’re the one who gave me the credit. I’m getting a promotion now, so I came especially to thank you!”

Zhao Nuanyue hadn’t wanted any reward for what she did. After all, when faced with such a heinous incident, anyone with a conscience who noticed something amiss would have done the same.

”Haha, it was just a small thing,” Zhao Nuanyue said humbly. ”If I took the credit, I’d get a commemorative banner at most. But for Brother Chen, it’s more than just a banner—it can take his career to the next level, and that makes me happy too.”

Seeing Zhao Nuanyue chatting so happily with Chen Lei, Hua Yusen grew displeased. ”Human traffickers are vicious criminals who don’t play by any rules,” he said. ”Nuanyue, you even had Little Red Carp with you. Weren’t you afraid something would happen?”

”I just noticed something was off and told Brother Chen. I didn’t try to capture them myself.” Seeing that Hua Yusen was angry, Zhao Nuanyue quickly tried to appease him. Otherwise, with his sometimes petty nature, he could be very hard to placate.

Hua Yusen didn’t smile. Instead, he said with utmost seriousness, ”From now on, no matter what you encounter, you must ensure your own safety before you try to save anyone else. If you aren’t completely sure, don’t get involved.”

”Mm, I know,” Zhao Nuanyue said with a smile. ’Hua Yusen has been moping around with a long face ever since Chen Lei arrived. It’s so impolite.’

Little Red Carp also knew her brother-in-law was just looking out for her sister, so she didn’t interfere. Her brother-in-law was right. Her sister was too kind, and she was afraid that if she encountered any injustice, she would rush in without a second thought. If she couldn’t handle the situation, she would get hurt.

Chen Lei smiled and explained on Zhao Nuanyue’s behalf, ”Your wife actually handled it very well. She knew her own limitations, but she used her professional judgment to provide us with a crucial lead. It wasn’t reckless at all. So, Sanmu, don’t hold it against her. Look, your serious face is scaring her.”

Hearing Chen Lei’s words, the expression on Hua Yusen’s face relaxed a little. ”Mm, that’s the right way to do it,” he said. ”Right, I forgot to congratulate you on your promotion!”

”Haha, thanks,” Chen Lei said with a laugh. ’Seeing Hua Yusen care so much, it’s clear his feelings for Zhao Nuanyue run deep.’

Chen Lei was filled with emotion. It was a classic case of a match made across a thousand miles, brought together by a thread of fate. Back when Zhao Nuanyue was heading to the countryside, they had only met once on the train with Hua Yusen. To think that such a strong destiny would unfold between them!

Seeing that Hua Yusen wasn’t angry anymore, Zhao Nuanyue said with a cheerful laugh, ”Alright, you two go to the living room. Don’t stay in the kitchen; I can handle this myself.”

”Haha, then we’ll go sit in the living room for a bit. We’ll come back later to help make the dumplings.” Chen Lei was being polite. ’How long would it take for Zhao Nuanyue to finish wrapping that huge ball of dough all by herself?’

”That’s right, we’ll come and help make the dumplings later,” Hua Yusen said with a smile, then pulled Chen Lei into the living room.

Little Red Carp stayed in the kitchen, playing with a piece of dough off to the side, making it round, flat, long...

In no time, Little Red Carp’s fair, chubby little face was covered in flour, making her look like a little snow doll.

Zhao Nuanyue couldn’t help but chuckle, but she didn’t stop Little Red Carp. A child’s fun was so innocent, and she didn’t want to interrupt. At worst, she’d just use that dough to make dumplings for Hua Yusen and Zhao Nuan Yang later. She was sure they wouldn’t mind. Besides, even if they did mind, it wouldn’t matter, because Zhao Nuanyue had no intention of telling them it was the dough Little Red Carp had been playing with.

’Thinking this, Zhao Nuanyue felt a little wicked. But then again, wasting food was shameful. A little white lie to avoid waste was perfectly fine.’

In the living room, Chen Lei and Hua Yusen dropped their cheerful expressions, their faces turning serious.

”This case actually involves the Li family!” Chen Lei glanced outside to make sure no one was there, then lowered his voice and continued, ”Twenty or thirty children, none older than five, were sent to a place called Lingshan. I saw the confession with my own eyes. But just as the case was about to be closed, someone new was transferred in and took complete control of the investigation. When I looked at the case file again, that confession was gone. But I remember it clearly from that day. I found it very strange, but I didn’t say anything. Instead, I went home and used the Chen Family’s connections to ask about the newcomer, Zhou Changhai. It turns out he’s one of the Li family’s people. That makes things rather intriguing.”

”Lingshan?” Hua Yusen thought for a moment. ”Is that the Lingshan in Central State?”

”Yes,” Chen Lei nodded. ”As you know, I’m the only one propping up the Chen Family right now, so I don’t have the power to investigate. I just can’t figure out why the Li family would be connected to traffickers who buy and sell children, especially children under five, both boys and girls.”

Hua Yusen pondered for a moment, weighing his options carefully before nodding. ”I’ll report this to Elder Gu, and then we’ll decide what to do. If the lead you’ve provided is useful, you will definitely be greatly rewarded for it.”

Hearing Hua Yusen’s words, Chen Lei was overjoyed. He rubbed his hands together and said gratefully, ”Thank you, Yu Sen. You know me—I’m not particularly skilled in either scholarly or martial pursuits, and most of the younger generation of the Chen Family are the same. When you rise to power, you have to help out your big brother here.”

”Of course. You know, there are many clever people in this world, but very few loyal ones.” Hua Yusen replied slowly, ”You know that Elder Gu was betrayed before and nearly lost everything. So it doesn’t matter if you don’t have great talent. As long as you are loyal, you can still be given important positions, and you can be trained to become talented. Lei, since you trust me, I’ll speak from the heart: follow Elder Gu, and the Chen family will have a future!”

Chen Lei’s heart pounded with excitement, as if he could already see the Chen Family’s revival.

”I know I don’t have any great abilities myself. The only way to open up new opportunities for the Chen Family is by following the right person.” Chen Lei gave a wry smile, but at the same time, he was relieved. At least he still had a good brother in Hua Yusen. ”There’s one more strange thing about this case. The short man who knew about the Lingshan incident died suddenly last night. The official story is that he was scared to death.”
