Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

But Zhao Nuanyue didn’t want those people to keep giving the babies sleeping pills, so she said, ”Little Red Carp, you run up ahead. When you get in front of them, suddenly knock over their milk powder. That way I can get a good look at what kind of medicine is in there!”

”Okay!” A small task like this was a piece of cake for Little Red Carp.

Little Red Carp ran ahead, giggling and shouting, ”Come and get me! Come and get me!”

Zhao Nuanyue followed behind, pretending to be anxious as she scolded, ”You little rascal, don’t run around like that! Slow down before you bump into someone.”

”I won’t stop, I won’t stop! You can’t catch me!” Little Red Carp was completely fearless. As she ran, she even glanced back to make a face at her sister.

Seeing Little Red Carp’s performance, Zhao Nuanyue couldn’t help but marvel inwardly. ’She’s such a good actress!’

’If Little Red Carp were interested, she could definitely become an actress.’

Just as Little Red Carp reached the three strange women, she lunged at the large bag containing the milk powder. Everything came tumbling out with a CLATTER, and the powder itself spilled everywhere.

”What are you doing?!” one of the women snapped. ”Where are your parents? This milk powder is expensive.”

Zhao Nuanyue rushed over and quickly pulled Little Red Carp behind her. She bent down, offering an apologetic smile. ”I’m so sorry, my little girl is just too mischievous. She didn’t see you. I’m terribly sorry. Let me help you pick this up.”

As she spoke, Zhao Nuanyue began to gather the items scattered on the floor.

Little Red Carp’s eyes were fixed on a small package on the floor. That was what was keeping the three babies in such a deep sleep.

Seeing Zhao Nuanyue reaching for the items, another woman quickly stopped her. ”Don’t worry about it, please. She’s just a child, it’s no problem. We’ll get it ourselves.”

”I couldn’t possibly allow that!” Zhao Nuanyue protested. ”My daughter spilled your milk powder and knocked over your things. Even if you’re willing to let it go, I can’t. Children don’t know any better, but we adults do.”

Zhao Nuanyue’s hand had already closed firmly around the packet of pills on the floor. Her eyesight was excellent, and she could clearly read the words on the packaging. They were, indeed, sleeping pills.

”Really, there’s no need,” the woman said, flustered. She set the baby down on the seat and began frantically gathering her things, not at all concerned that the infant might fall from the narrow bench.

The woman’s behavior didn’t seem like that of a relative, making Zhao Nuanyue even more certain that something was wrong.

The woman’s sharp voice and strange expression made Zhao Nuanyue pause. She asked, ”Ma’am, I just want to compensate you, after all...”

”That’s enough. Stop bothering us. We don’t need your compensation,” the woman said, having already stuffed everything quickly back into the large bag. She clearly didn’t want Zhao Nuanyue to linger.

”Thank you for being so understanding,” Zhao Nuanyue said with a forced smile, then led Little Red Carp away.

”You are such a handful! You can’t run around the train car like this anymore, do you hear me?” Zhao Nuanyue scolded. Of course, her words were meant for the nearby passengers—and the three women—to hear.

”Okay, I won’t do it again,” Little Red Carp said, nodding repeatedly. From an angle no one else could see, she and Zhao Nuanyue exchanged a look. Zhao Nuanyue gave a slight nod. The pills were the evidence.

The moment Zhao Nuanyue let go of her hand, Little Red Carp started running wild again.

Zhao Nuanyue continued the act, chasing after her with feigned anger and scolding her non-stop.

As the three women watched Zhao Nuanyue chase after the rambunctious Little Red Carp, they exchanged glances and breathed a sigh of relief, assuming their secret hadn’t been discovered.

But they never would have imagined that as soon as Zhao Nuanyue chased Little Red Carp out of the car, she stopped the charade. In the next car, she found a train attendant and told them she had important information to report.

Seeing that Zhao Nuanyue didn’t look like a troublemaker, the attendant took her to find the conductor, who in turn brought her to the train chief. To her surprise, the train chief turned out to be Hua Yusen’s good friend, Chen Lei.

”Well, I’ll be—Nuanyue, what are you doing here?” Chen Lei was stunned to see Zhao Nuanyue, never expecting to run into her and her little sister on the train.

Seeing that it was Chen Lei, Zhao Nuanyue felt her tension ease. She said in a hushed voice, ”I’m on my way to a friend’s wedding in Nianqiao Village. We can catch up later—when we get to Jincheng City, I’ll have Yu Sen invite you over for dinner. Right now, I have something important to tell you. In my car, there are three women holding babies. They boarded together, so they’re obviously a group. They got on the train at five this morning, and it’s already three in the afternoon, but the babies they’re holding haven’t cried once. A moment ago, I had Little Red Carp intentionally knock over their bag of milk powder, and I found sleeping pills inside. I suspect they’re drugging the babies. No mother—no real mother—would give their child sleeping pills, no matter how much they cried. That stuff is incredibly harmful to children!”

Upon hearing Zhao Nuanyue’s words, Chen Lei was alarmed. ”You’re a doctor, so I trust your professional judgment,” he said. ”These people have to be human traffickers. No ordinary person would ever give a child sleeping pills.”

”Exactly, which is why I came to report it. I hope you can detain them as soon as possible,” Zhao Nuanyue said urgently. ”We can’t let them give those babies any more of that medicine.”

Chen Lei listened and nodded. ”Okay. You and your sister stay here. I’m going to take some men and detain those three women right now.”

”After they boarded, I was on my way to the restroom and saw two men with them. They exchanged a few words. One was wearing black, and the other was in grey,” Zhao Nuanyue told Chen Lei everything she had seen. It was better to be mistaken than to let a single one get away.

’Human traffickers deserve to be drawn and quartered!’

Chen Lei nodded. ”Understood. I’ll go check it out myself while gathering my men. Hopefully, we can subdue them all at once.”

Hearing this, Zhao Nuanyue nodded. ”I hope everything goes smoothly.”

”Stay in this car. Don’t move, and don’t go anywhere,” Chen Lei instructed. ’This is my best friend’s wife. I can’t let anything happen to her. How would I ever explain it to him?’

Now that she had passed the critical information to Chen Lei, who was taking it very seriously, Zhao Nuanyue was more than happy to step back and not get further involved.

’Besides, human traffickers work in gangs. Who knew if there were other members on board? She had Little Red Carp with her; it was best to lie low.’

”Okay, thank you, Chen Lei. By the way, my bodyguards, Zhang Hong and Li Wei, are sitting next to my younger brother. They’re excellent fighters and are in plain clothes. You could have them help you with the investigation. That way, you can capture all five of them at once.” Zhao Nuanyue was worried that uniformed train police would be too conspicuous and might cause the criminals to do something desperate.
