Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

Feng Wanru heard what Zhao Nuanyue said and thought it made sense. She nodded and said, ”Alright, you can come and massage Yu Sen every day. But next time, don’t bring a child. This is a hospital, after all. It wouldn’t be good if something were to happen.”

Children may not know any better, but adults should.

Feeling disliked, Little Red Carp was not happy. She pouted and glared at Feng Wanru.

Seeing Little Red Carp’s reaction, Feng Wanru disliked the big-eyed little girl even more. But a woman of her age wouldn’t stoop to arguing with a child, so she walked to Hua Yusen’s side. She gazed at him, looking so much like he was just asleep, and silently began to cry.

Although Zhao Nuanyue was also irritated with Feng Wanru, seeing her cry made that feeling dissolve.

’Feng Wanru was just a mother worried about her son.’

”Yes.” Zhao Nuanyue nodded. A hospital was full of patients, after all, which wasn’t good for a child’s health. She really couldn’t bring Little Red Carp here often in the future.

Zhao Nuanyang, holding Little Red Carp, looked at his sister and said, ”Sister, I’ll take Little Red Carp outside and wait for you.”

’Hua Yusen was the man his sister loved, and Feng Wanru was Hua Yusen’s mother. Zhao Nuanyang knew he couldn’t lose his temper or get angry, but he could at least follow the principle of ’out of sight, out of mind.’ That had to be okay, right?’

”Okay, take Little Red Carp out to get some sun.” Zhao Nuanyue nodded. Because she loved Hua Yusen, she could understand Feng Wanru’s grief and sorrow. But her brother, Zhao Nuanyang, and Little Red Carp cared most about her, not Hua Yusen.

Zhao Nuanyang carried Little Red Carp outside and went to a lawn not far from the hospital. There was a small kiosk nearby that sold pinwheels. Zhao Nuanyang bought his little sister, Little Red Carp, a brightly colored one.

Little Red Carp took the pinwheel and ran all over the lawn, her crisp laughter carrying far.

In the small garden nearby, many elderly people sat in wheelchairs, sunbathing. When they heard such a joyous and pleasant laugh, they would turn their heads to look. And they would see a little girl on the lawn, her hair in cute little braids, wearing a pink, floral-print padded jacket and matching pants, joyfully running with a pinwheel in her hand!

These seniors, in their twilight years, especially loved to see such scenes, so full of life and vitality.

One of the old men, wearing reading glasses and reading a book, had a small boy with an indifferent expression standing beside him. He said softly, ”Che, look how happy that little girl is. Don’t you want to go play with her?”

Leng Che glanced at the little girl on the lawn. ’So joyful, so adorable. Her smile is radiant.’ He felt a pang of envy, but he had to stay with his grandfather and couldn’t go play. Besides, he didn’t want to.

”I’m eight years old, Grandfather. I’m grown up now.” Leng Che’s expression was completely serious. He looked away and did not watch her any longer.

The old man was stunned. ’My grandson is only eight, not eighteen, and he’s already acting like other kids are too childish for him.’

’Honestly!’

His heart ached for the boy, but thinking of his grandson’s situation, the white-haired old man said no more.

Little Red Carp did sense someone watching her, but she paid it no mind. Right now, her favorite thing was the pinwheel in her hand.

The joy from outside did not spread into the sickroom.

Feng Wanru cried for a moment, then took out a handkerchief to wipe her tears. ”Leave as soon as you’re done with the massage,” she said. ”Try not to disturb Hua Yusen’s rest!”

With that, Feng Wanru left, her face expressionless.

She was heartbroken and wanted to vent, but she also had her own work to do, so there was simply no opportunity.

In truth, Feng Wanru knew her attitude toward Zhao Nuanyue was poor, but she just couldn’t help it.

’For Zhao Nuanyue to return at a time like this and stay by her son’s side was a sign of great loyalty and devotion.’

’But if her son never woke up, this pretty young woman surely wouldn’t stay by his side forever.’

’It was better not to get emotionally invested or grow close to Zhao Nuanyue from the beginning, rather than form an attachment only to be hurt again. That way, when Zhao Nuanyue eventually left her son, Feng Wanru would only be angry, not sad and heartbroken.’

Seeing Feng Wanru leave, Zhao Nuanyue’s taut nerves finally relaxed.

Zhao Nuanyue took a deep breath, sat down beside Hua Yusen, and held his hand. ”Yu Sen,” she said softly, ”I’m back in Jincheng City. And your engagement to Guo Dongmei has been called off. We can be together openly now. How can you still be lying here asleep with such happy news? You really shouldn’t be.”

Zhao Nuanyue stared at Hua Yusen’s tightly closed eyes, but he showed no reaction.

’It’s not like he could wake up that easily, could he?’

’So many famous doctors in Jincheng City, and even the renowned National Medical Master Sun Haoran, had spared no effort to treat him, yet he hadn’t woken up. Why would he wake up just because I came back?’

Still, just being able to see his familiar face was enough to make Zhao Nuanyue content.

As long as he was still breathing, as long as his heart was still beating, she would not give up!

”Even if you can’t wake up, I’ll stay by your side,” Zhao Nuanyue said softly. She held Hua Yusen’s hand and placed it gently against her face. ”You care so much about your appearance, but now you’ve actually grown a beard. When I get back, I’ll prepare everything to give you a shave. You’ll be even more handsome then.”

”Oh, right. I haven’t received a letter from you since the one right before the Moon Festival. At the time, I just assumed you were on a mission. But sometimes, I’d worry that something had happened to you, and I couldn’t sleep!”

”Since you’re asleep, you must not know what I wrote in my letters. Wang Dadan was beaten to death by Li Shan, and Li Siming and Liu Lanhua were sentenced to more than ten years for human trafficking. You could say they got what they deserved...”

In her soft, gentle voice, Zhao Nuanyue recounted the events of Nianqiao Village one by one, letting Hua Yusen know what she had experienced there.

Doctors and nurses came by to do their rounds, but because Sun Haoran had already explained who Zhao Nuanyue was, they didn’t give her any trouble and allowed her to remain.

At noon, Zhao Nuanyue gently kissed Hua Yusen’s forehead and whispered, ”I’m heading back for now. I have to deliver a letter for Uncle He this afternoon, so I won’t be able to visit, but I’ll come back to see you tomorrow morning.”

When Zhao Nuanyue walked out of the sickroom and went down to the small garden, she saw that Zhao Nuanyang and Little Red Carp were still playing.

A small pinwheel was enough to keep Little Red Carp happy for a whole morning, and a patch of grass or a few flowers was enough to leave Zhao Nuanyang completely engrossed.

’Little Red Carp and Zhao Nuanyang are such pure souls.’

’And that was a good thing, really.’

When Little Red Carp saw her sister, she ran over excitedly and threw herself into her arms, holding up the pinwheel. ”Sister, look! A pinwheel! Such a pretty pinwheel!”

”Yes, it’s very pretty,” Zhao Nuanyue said with a smile. ”But it’s noon. Are you hungry?”

Hearing this, Little Red Carp nodded vigorously. ”Hungry! My tummy is so hungry.”
