Sweet Rebirth: The Little Healer

Through layers of rigorous interrogation, Gu Qingyu learned the truth. The Liu Family had merely been a scapegoat thrown out by the Li family. The assailants had been sent by the Li family, but they were all dead. With no one left to testify, the trail had gone cold.

The Liu Family had thought the Li family was finally making a serious move and had mobilized many of its resources, never expecting to be nothing more than a pawn. Once he understood what had happened, the Liu Family’s Manager committed suicide by taking poison that very night.

Of the Liu Family’s younger generation, some were arrested, while others began to flee.

Under Gu Qingyu’s powerful counterattack, the Liu Family was instantly wiped from existence.

The Li family also learned two things from this incident. First, as long as the group’s owner was present, no one should even think of trying any funny business, or they would face a gruesome and humiliating end—near-total annihilation of their clan. Second, that sickly Gu Qingyu was incredibly lucky. Trying to kill him was no easy feat.

At the same time, the incident showed the group’s owner that having one family dominate was not a good thing. A stable structure required evenly matched forces, a three-way standoff. Thus, using his well-honed political skills, he redistributed power and achieved a rare balance.

As a result, a rare period of peace settled over Jincheng City.

But this peace had nothing to do with Hua Yusen. He had been hit by two shots. The most critical one struck him in the chest, right over his heart. Fortunately, a shell-like object he was carrying blocked the bullet, though the hard shell was now covered in a dense web of cracks.

The other bullet hit five centimeters from his heart. After surgery, he was temporarily out of danger.

However, ten days passed. Aside from those who had died on the spot, the other injured had gradually woken up, but Hua Yusen remained in a coma.

Gu Qingyu personally came to see Hua Yusen and once again instructed the doctors to do everything they could to save him. But the doctors couldn’t make any guarantees, only promising to do their best. Gu Qingyu even had Sun Haoran come and treat Hua Yusen with Yanwai Medicine, but it was to no avail.

Although Hua Yusen’s body was slowly recovering, the doctors stated directly that it was impossible for him to return to his former condition. Sun Haoran also felt that it would be a miracle if Hua Yusen simply woke up and regained his health; returning to his old job was out of the question.

Half a month went by, and Hua Yusen still hadn’t woken up.

A month went by, and Hua Yusen still hadn’t woken up!

The last glimmer of hope in the Hua family’s hearts gradually faded. Their promising, filial son was gone.

Gu Qingyu was even more grief-stricken. Although Hua Yusen had been his bodyguard, they had weathered so many hardships together in Nianqiao Village. And including the incident in Labor County, Hua Yusen had now saved his life twice.

As long as he was around, Gu Qingyu would protect the Hua family. He couldn’t let Hua Yusen’s sacrifice be in vain.

Three months later, Hua Yusen still hadn’t woken up, kept alive only by an IV drip.

The doctors had issued a formal diagnosis: Hua Yusen might never wake up, doomed to a vegetative state.

Hearing this, Hua Zhiqiang was overcome with grief.

Hua Yusen’s mother, Feng Wanru, was utterly devastated. Her wonderful child was now in a vegetative state. Although her son had traded his life for greater glory and wealth for the Hua family, as a mother, all she ever wanted was for him to be safe.

Gu Qingyu also heard about the doctor’s diagnosis and made a special trip to see Hua Yusen.

”Feng Wanru, I’m so sorry. I’m the one who dragged Hua Yusen into this.” Gu Qingyu looked at the inconsolably weeping woman, his heart filled with guilt. Any words he could offer now would be hollow. An outstanding man like Hua Yusen might never wake up.

Hearing his words, Feng Wanru shook her head. ”It was his duty. I don’t blame you.”

Her words only made Gu Qingyu feel worse.

After leaving the hospital room, Gu Qingyu turned to Hua Zhiqiang and said, ”There is an important position open in the Jincheng City group. Let your second son take it. Don’t worry, things have stabilized now. It won’t be too dangerous.”

Hua Zhiqiang understood this was Gu Qingyu’s way of compensating the Hua family.

Not long ago, his own position at work had been raised by two ranks, and now his second son, Hua Yulin, was being appointed to a key post. Such great responsibility was all to compensate their family. As for his third son, who was away, he too would be given an important role in the future.

Hua Zhiqiang was happy, but at the same time, deeply saddened. His most prized eldest son was unconscious, a vegetable. No amount of status or benefit could ever compare to his son’s life.

But things had already come to this, and he had no choice but to accept it.

”Thank you, Gu,” Hua Zhiqiang said gratefully. From now on, they would have to work even harder, so as not to betray the status their eldest son had bought with his life.

News that Hua Yusen had fallen into a vegetative state spread like wildfire.

When Guo Dongmei heard the news, she was beyond frustrated. ’Am I supposed to stay engaged to a vegetable? The Hua family has risen in status and is now on par with the Guo Family. What if they demand we honor the engagement? Am I really supposed to marry him?’

’Of course not!’

’Hua Yusen is a vegetable. If I marry him, how is that any different from being a widow with a living husband!’

Every time Guo Dongmei went out, she was met with whispers and pointing fingers. She finally couldn’t take it anymore and went to her father. ”Dad, I want to break off the engagement with Hua Yusen. He’s a vegetable now! I can’t marry a vegetable. If we call it off now, they can’t make a big deal out of it, given the circumstances.”

Mr. Guo had been troubled by this matter recently as well. Some of his colleagues would always look at him with a malicious glint in their eyes, making him very uncomfortable. Now that Hua Yusen had been officially diagnosed as being in a vegetative state, it was perfectly reasonable for the Guo Family to break off the engagement.

”Sigh. We’ve waited three months for him to be in a coma and for the doctors to make their diagnosis. We’ve done all that could be expected of us,” Mr. Guo said. ”I’ll go to the Hua family tomorrow and call off your engagement.” He thought about how his daughter was as beautiful as a flower; her ambiguous relationship with the young master of the Li family couldn’t continue. It was indeed time to draw a clear line with the Hua family.

Hearing her father’s words, Guo Dongmei was thrilled. ”Thank you, Father!” she said excitedly. ”I can finally be free.”

When she was with Li Gongming, they always had to sneak around, never daring to be seen together openly.

”No need to thank me. You’re my daughter; I can’t just watch you jump into a pit of fire. Besides, Jincheng City has stabilized now, and with what’s happened to Hua Yusen, I naturally don’t have to accommodate the Hua family anymore,” Mr. Guo said smugly. The Guo Family could finally stand on its own two feet.

’It feels so good to be on top!’

’As long as we follow the Li family, we’ll rise even higher. That’s when the Guo Family will see its most glorious days.’

”Dad, don’t you worry. The Li family’s second young master won’t escape my grasp. Once we break the engagement with the Hua family, I’m sure I’ll be engaged to Li Gongming soon after,” Guo Dongmei said confidently. Li Gongming was the one she was after, her ideal man—it had never been Hua Yusen.
