Armed Train in the Apocalypse

The bright flames suddenly illuminated the front sector.

The Iron-Eating Trees, showing their claws and fangs, fled in panic, but their speed was too slow. The fire oil had already drenched them, and within a breath, the raging flames had climbed up to their treetops.

As the branches swung, they also ignited their nearby companions.

From the drone’s perspective, the huge ”mobile fortress” simultaneously erupted with wild flames, igniting one fire tree after another, illuminating the surrounding area for kilometers as if it were a spectacular fireworks show.

The clattering of the armored train sounded like drumbeats, spreading along with the trembling of the Iron-Eating Trees in a booming wave all around.

Like a festival celebration.

Inside the carriage, Lin Jin walked back and forth, adjusting the flame’s temperature, preventing it from losing power and allowing the enraged Iron-Eating Trees to get too close.

The armored train was water-resistant and electrically insulated, but its tolerance to high temperatures was average.

Standing atop the train, He Jie lifted a large flamethrower, aiming it at the Iron-Eating Trees below.

Like an arsonist, he pruned their branches.

The orange-red firelight made his grim face flicker between light and shadow.

”Chacha...”

Yu Yue meticulously trimmed Su Huan’s hair, strands of glistening, jet-black hair falling to the floor.

Reflecting the firelight from outside the window.

The carriage was well soundproofed, allowing only the faint crackling of the flames to reach inside, not even louder than the snipping sound of the haircut.

At this moment, the wild flames and gentle life wove together to form a new world’s tapestry.

Restless yet tranquil.

...

The scorching sunlight had just penetrated the heavy Italian velvet curtains, as the smart home system quietly activated. Underfloor heating kept the teak floors at 26℃, stepping on them felt like walking on sunbaked sand—warm and comfortable.

A vintage gramophone by the bedside played an affectionate and gentle cello melody.

The woman on the bed fluttered her lashes and got up.

She pulled back the curtains, letting the blazing sunlight flood into the room, illuminating every detail inside.

Wang Yi frowned.

The climate of the Storm Zone and the Acid Rain Zone were two complete extremes.

Although she didn’t like the pungent smell of acid rain, she enjoyed the humid and continuous climate there, which didn’t irritate her skin.

In her earlier years, she had undergone too many cosmetic treatments for the sake of beauty, making her skin sensitive to light.

Things improved somewhat after becoming an Evolver, but the habit remained.

She instinctively loathed excessive sunlight.

Outside the window was a sunlit conservatory with a glass dome, where the crystalline glass refracted the light into pale golden gauze, enshrouding the room full of blooming champagne roses.

Dewdrops still clung to the petals, clearly from the just-released mist of the automatic irrigation system.

Under the scorching sun of the Storm Zone, dew was non-existent.

To be precise, without someone dedicated to its upkeep and cultivation, such delicate, unmutated blossoms wouldn’t exist at all.

About three minutes later, the personal secretary knocked on the door right on time.

Helping Wang Yi with her wash while saying, ”Mr. Shu invites you for breakfast.”

”Seeing him will make me so sick I can’t eat. To save my appetite, tell him to get lost.”

Wang Yi said with a hint of disgust.

Even without her ex-husband from the board, she remained a senior manager at Black Kite and naturally didn’t need to show him any courtesy.

The secretary was unmoved by Wang Yi’s venomous words, having grown accustomed to them.

Calmly, she replied, ”Mr. Shu mentioned that Ms. Shu Wei is in the team assigned to the mission...”

The secretary’s sentence was abruptly cut off by a loud noise.

Looking up, the floor-to-ceiling window shattered from Wang Yi’s punch, the glass creating a spider web pattern with crimson blood seeping through the cracks.

Yet, the woman’s figure had vanished from the bedroom, her furious curses echoing outside.

”Where’s that old bastard?! Today I’m going to strangle him alive!”

Calmly, the secretary picked up the intercom and said, ”Please replace the glass panel.”

...

Sunlight made the disk glow white, and the steak soaked in tomato juice was tender and tasty.

Mr. Shu leisurely wielded chopsticks in one hand and a knife in the other, cutting the steak on the plate. Once cut into small pieces, he pushed it in front of Wang Yi, whose face was dark with anger.

Even though she was livid, years of habit made her restrain her temper in public.

But the way the attendants were positioned showed the unpleasant atmosphere between the two.

”Shu Wei is only Tier One, why did you send her to such a dangerous place for a mission?!”

Glaring at his enraged ex-wife, Mr. Shu sneered, ”This is the result of you badmouthing me to her for years. I’m too afraid to meet her; she blows up immediately, and there’s no way she’d listen to me.”

”So you didn’t even bother to notify me?”

Wang Yi’s gaze was icy as she pressed forward step by step.

Mr. Shu frowned, ”She’s thirty already; she was a billionaire CEO before the apocalypse. She’s not your pet!”

”Moreover, I instructed the Tier Two member to prioritize her safety. If the mission fails, so what? We can report it to the company. It’s a form of training for her, better than staying cooped up at the base.”

Wang Yi raised an eyebrow, sarcastically saying, ”You’re safe within headquarters, eating non-mutated steak and drinking wine, while sending my daughter out for training. Why don’t you go?”

Mr. Shu sighed deeply. No matter the woman’s personality, once she dislikes something, she always has countless sharp words.

”I’m almost sixty now; I’ve weathered all the storms I needed to...”

”Bang!”

Wang Yi flipped the steak plate with a wave of her hand and said with disgust, ”Don’t lecture me with your wisdom. If anything happens to Shu Wei, I’ll tear you apart!”
