Rebirth: A Cinderella's Counterattack

Chapter 664: Chapter 644: Narrow Path Encounter, He Juncai (Part 3)

After visiting An Zilan at the maternity center, the group left under the escort of Luo Qianqian and He Wenyu, with Li Menglin still holding her papers and tearfully bidding farewell to Luo Qianqian. She had originally planned to stay until the end of the vacation, but Luo Qianqian seemed very busy, and her family did not want her to trouble her sister, so she could only wave goodbye to Luo Qianqian and they agreed that next time she ranked first in her exams, Luo Qianqian would have to come back and spend time with her.

Watching the group drive away, and with no more cars in sight, Luo Qianqian finally stopped smiling, squinted her eyes, and called Lin Jiayou, only to be immediately asked by him, ”Do you know He Juncai?”

Seeing Luo Qianqian’s expression, He Wenyu immediately leaned in to listen, only to hear He Juncai’s name from the other end of the phone, which also stunned him, and they looked at each other in bewilderment, unsure what to do.

”What’s wrong?” Luo Qianqian finally spoke up, thinking it best not to casually mention today’s events given the unknown situation on the other end.

”My brother said that a new group has arrived here. It’s not exactly a gang, just a few people, but they are involved in all sorts of shady activities, including gambling and drugs,” Lin Jiayou paused. ”Lately, this He Juncai has been closely associated with this gang. My brother mentioned he had once monitored a similar name when he was with Bai Yixian.”

”He Juncai is in our city? Has he been here all along?” Luo Qianqian was shocked. That he hadn’t come looking for the He family, only having approached them once and then no more follow-up? That seemed illogical, and wasn’t it said that he had gone to the South?

Listening to Lin Jiayou speaking with someone else on the other end, he soon told Luo Qianqian, ”It seems not, he only returned recently, around the same time as that group.”

... He Wenyu was taken aback first, while Luo Qianqian was still pondering over the credibility of what He Juncai had said today, her brows furrowed tightly.

”We met him today, he’s somewhat related to Xiao Yu,” Luo Qianqian murmured with pursed lips.

Lin Jiayou showed no surprise, as both of them had the surname He, they either didn’t know each other, or they were indeed relatives.

”You met him? Where? ... He usually frequent places like internet cafes, KTVs, and bars,” Lin Jiayou’s voice became serious. ”Where did you go?”

”No way,” Luo Qianqian immediately retorted. ”We ran into him at the supermarket, it was just a chance encounter, he seemed to recognize Xiao Yu only after several confirmations, and even asked her for some money.” Luo Qianqian’s voice carried a hint of helplessness, ”It seems he is just a hoodlum level, all out of money.”

”... Are you sure we’re talking about the same person?” Lin Jiayou’s voice sounded puzzled. ”He should not be lacking money...”

Luo Qianqian was startled again. Not lacking money? Then why did he ask Xiao Yu for money? Surely it wasn’t just for a mere reminder?

Someone close? Who could that be?

After speaking a few more words with Lin Jiayou and reporting on their next itinerary, Luo Qianqian squinted her eyes, ”Xiao Yu, think carefully, who else close to you knows all your information?”

”Just those people, plus you and me, at most one more, your senior brother, and the driver,” He Wenyu’s brows furrowed tightly. Many knew her family address and school information, but not many knew she was staying at a hotel, which directly excluded many suspects.

”It doesn’t make sense for someone to chat about me, right?” He Wenyu waved her hand dismissively. ”I don’t consider myself a subject to be gossiped about leisurely after meals, and my performance isn’t exceptionally outstanding. I don’t see why anyone would be jealous of me?”

Luo Qianqian rolled her eyes, ”I can’t believe you came up with that, serving as entertainment after tea and meals...” She then frowned, ”Do you think someone might deliberately get close to people who are familiar with you to extract your information or something?”

”You’ve watched too many spy movies.” He Wenyu, without any hesitation, returned the eye roll Luo Qianqian had given her, ”Then why not say all my good friends are actually enemies in disguise, waiting to strike me at a critical moment?”

”Cut the crap, which one of your friends hasn’t been around for awhile? The shortest has been since high school; the longest, for six or seven years, okay?” Luo Qianqian, unaffected by He Wenyu’s eye roll, held her chin and thought hard, then clapped her hands, looked up, and her eyes were filled with frustration, ”Ah...”

”What is it? Did you think of something?” He Wenyu immediately leaned in.

Luo Qianqian pouted, ”The senior brother is still waiting for us.”

”... Your senior brother is practically turning into a bodyguard, never leaving your side,” He Wenyu muttered as she watched Luo Qianqian take out her phone to make a call, ”It was never this clingy with Xu Tianyi.”

Luo Qianqian didn’t miss He Wenyu’s murmur, ”One is trust and faith, the other is responsibility and duty... Senior brother, uh... just left... yes, we’re heading back now... okay, see you soon.” She hung up the phone and rolled her eyes again, ”Let’s go, let’s take our time walking over.”

”Qianqian, how does he know whether my information is important or not? What matters is what he plans to do next, right?” By now, He Wenyu had also come around, looping her arm through Luo Qianqian’s, her expression somewhat serious, ”Is he after money or something else?”

”Pfft...” Luo Qianqian was at a loss for words from He Wenyu’s question and didn’t know how to respond.

If it were for money, it wouldn’t make sense that he only took a little today instead of taking everything.

If it were for something else... no way. Although He Wenyu has developed well and looks pretty good, she is still just a kid after all, and anything would be illegal, moreover, there’s also a blood relation between them two.

But what if, He Juncai was just leaking the information without planning to do anything? What if someone else intended to do it?

Luo Qianqian’s brow furrowed deeply, her pace unconsciously slowing down, causing He Wenyu to stop and look at her puzzled.

Luo Qianqian looked into He Wenyu’s eyes, ”What do you think, was he being kind or malicious today?”

”I don’t really know why you’re asking... but think about it, if he had been kind, would he have forced you to stand out there with me?” He Wenyu shivered as she remembered that chilly encounter.

”Should we give a heads up to foster mom and foster dad?” Luo Qianqian sighed. She was right, if his look had been friendly, why would she have needed to pull He Wenyu behind her?

”Forget my mom for now; I’ll call my dad in a bit.” Remembering an incident years ago that had nearly caused them to drop everything and flee, He Wenyu shook her head. Women, they just don’t handle stress well. Better to just enjoy life; let the husband and children deal with its hardships.

”Yeah, foster mom will probably start talking about going on a trip for a few months or something.” Luo Qianqian also remembered how Huang Yueran had reacted when He Juncai had visited, and she sighed deeply.
