Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

The soot drizzle had ceased by seven in the morning, leaving the steel flagstones of the Third District coated in a damp, gray film that clung to boot soles.

In the upper-floor kitchen of townhouse forty-two, Maria finished buttering a thick slab of malt bread toasted over the cast-iron stove plate.

She wore her rawhide jacket without the heavy brigandine armor, her short hair slicked back with water, her hands scrubbed clean of grease.

Dante sat across from her at the table, sipping a mug of hot root infusion while reviewing the reference points mapped out in his grid-lined notebook.

”We have an ally of convenience,” Dante said, his voice carrying the measured calm of someone sorting freight on a loading dock. ”Miro won’t take another shot at us. He took the six hundred scrip, took the salamander salve, and knows that if he tries anything clever, we can track down his cellar before noon. He’s an asset because he knows the city’s subterranean conduits better than any blueprint sold on the open plaza.”

”So what’s the play now?” Maria took a deep bite of bread, chewing slowly. ”Head back to the mire and smash more ferrite boars?”

”Not today,” Dante slid his pen into the pocket of his heat-resistant leather vest. ”Today we go to the Second District. To the Central Archive and Scribes’ Library.”

Maria stopped chewing that very second.

She stared across the table with wide brown eyes in silent protest, swallowed the dry mouthful, and brought her open palm down on the timber with a sharp smack.

”A library, Dante?!” Her voice spiked, thick with unvarnished outrage. ”We just finished high school on Earth! I spent three years of my life crammed into a miniature desk listening to Mr. Rogério drone on about atoms, and now you want to drag me into a room full of moldy books in Hell?!”

”This is tactical intelligence gathering, Maria,” Dante replied, keeping his voice level. ”We know Containment Sector Zero sits two hundred meters beneath the Military Citadel. We know their sigil is a blind eye set within a silver hexagon. What we don’t know is how the Citadel was constructed, what jurisdiction governs that inner ring, or the deep history of this continent.”

He tapped his spoon against the map of the plain pinned to the kitchen wall.

”We will be operating on this First Great Continent for months, Maria. At the very least until we reach Level 50. If we try to push thirty levels on raw improvisation, stumbling blindly through the dark without knowing where high-radiation disposal zones or the territories of Legion archdemons lie, we’ll end up dead before breaking Level 30.”

Maria let out a long, heavy sigh, throwing her broad shoulders back against her chair with a groan of timber.

”The boring part,” she grumbled, lifting her mug with her left hand. ”The worst part of any game is when the character has to stop cracking monster skulls to read moldy letters off a stone table.”

”Those who read survive,” Dante stood up, grabbing the canvas satchel holding their gray scrip. ”Grab your coat. The tram to the Second District leaves every ten minutes.”

The Central Archive and Scribes’ Library dominated the heart of the Second District, occupying an entire city block of gray granite and massive iron beams.

The building rose seven stories tall, flanked by narrow, frosted-glass windows screened behind heavy wrought-iron grates. A grand staircase of black basalt led to the main portal, framed by two forty-foot statues depicting the Legion’s founding smiths holding lead scrolls.

Dante paid twenty scrip at the brass entrance kiosk, receiving two numbered reader badges for access control.

Inside, a cavernous, echoing silence swallowed the space, broken only by the whisper of pneumatic document conveyors running along the vaulted ceilings, ferrying book bins between floors with short hisses of compressed air.

The ground-floor reading room was an ocean of dark oak shelving thirty feet high, mounted with rolling iron ladders locked into ceiling tracks.

Hundreds of long timber tables were lined with horned native scholars copying formulas onto mineral parchment, engineering apprentices inspecting steam-engine schematics under magnifying lenses, and penal souls binding worn leather folios with bone needles.

Maria dragged out a high-backed chair at the end of an isolated table, sitting in a way that left her head nearly a foot higher than any other reader in the aisle.

She rested her elbows on the dark wood, laced her thick fingers under her chin, and glared at Dante with a funereal scowl.

”You get two hours, Dante,” she warned in a harsh whisper. ”If you don’t dig up anything useful in this pile of rotting paper in two hours, I’m hauling you out of this nerd temple by your collar.”

Dante paid no mind to her complaint.

He was already pulling through the drawers of the punched-brass card catalog, tracking bibliographic references with the speed of thirty-four Intelligence.

Within fifteen minutes, he returned to the table hauling a stack of five thick, leather-bound tomes: Chronicles of the Plain’s Unification, Treatise on Geology and Ores of the First Great, Iron Legion Annals: Fourth Century, Compendium of Native Lineages and Castes, and Structural Mapping of the Central Foundations.

He sat across from her, flipped open the first volume, and began devouring the dense print.

The history of the First Great Continent was brutal, industrial, and completely devoid of religious mysticism.

Dante learned that four hundred years prior, the Plain of Iron Souls had been little more than a fractured expanse of petty demon clans warring over hot springs and shallow coal seams. The unification had not been forged by gods or mythic heroes. It had been driven by the industrial supremacy of the Council of Forges, which erected the first blast furnaces, standardized rifle bore calibers, and organized the Iron Legion as a professional army of territorial conquest.

The damned souls from Earth were the core gears in that machine.

They were not tortured in eternal brimstone out of demonic sadism. They were triaged upon arrival by the density of their earthly sins and routed directly into industrial production. Violent offenders were funneled into frontline meat-grinder battalions on the frontier or down into deep basalt mines. Thieves, fraudsters, and corrupt accountants were assigned to assembly lines, revenue offices, or the maintenance of the city’s libraries and registries.

Hell operated like a continuous factory converting mortal karmic debt into structural steel, steam pressure, and circulating currency.

And the geographic scale was staggering.

The Treatise on Geology logged the total surface area of the Plain of Iron Souls at over fifteen million square kilometers, divided into four grand biomechanical zones: the Slag Desert crossed by the rail line, the Ferrite Marshes to the south, the Piston Range to the east, and the Obsidian Trenches along the far western fringe.

Fauna within the deep trenches reached Level 50, boasting carapaces reinforced with heavy alloys that required full artillery batteries of the Legion to suppress.

Operating in this continent until hitting Level 50 was no mere conservative preference. It was a biological prerequisite before ever contemplating an entry into the Second Great Continent.

Maria spent the first hour snorting in boredom and leafing through an illustrated catalog of antique Legion weaponry with graphite-smudged fingertips.

By the second hour, she had rested her cheek against her left arm on the table, sleeping with her eyes half-shut, snoring so softly that only Dante’s sharp hearing caught the sound beneath the rustling pages of neighboring scholars.

Dante pressed deeper, narrowing his focus onto records concerning the Military Citadel.

He drew Structural Mapping of the Central Foundations closer, a five-hundred-page technical folio filled with architectural blueprints and municipal drainage schematics printed on folded tracing paper.

He combed the index for any reference to zero.

Sector Zero.

Primordial Containment.

Citadel Subterrane.

He ran his eyes across the steam conduit layouts of the central palace.

The diagrams were meticulous down to a depth of forty meters, documenting the barracks heating boilers, the garrison magazines, and the waste conduits emptying toward the South Sluice.

Below the forty-meter mark, the blueprints abruptly ceased.

A thick line of black ink cut off the bottom of the plate, bordering a wide crosshatched void stamped with standard military boilerplate:

Uncharted Structural Foundation Zone. Access Restricted by Council of Forges Decree No. 004.

No details on what lay within. No mention of laboratories, glass conduits, or soul matrix experimentation.

Dante shut the schematics and opened the Compendium of Native Lineages and Castes.

He searched for descriptions matching Miro’s secondary mandibles, looking for spider-chitin grafts on earthborn demons or mutations driven by alchemical fluids.

The only physical alterations registered in the official compendium stemmed from industrial sulfur-gas leaks in the deep pits or congenital deformities triggered by raw ambient Mana radiation among foundry laborers. Nothing regarding surgical precision with brass needles or circular wire-suture scars along the skull.

As for the blind eye within a silver hexagon?

He paged through the heraldic register of the forty-eight noble bloodlines comprising the Legion’s high command and the continent’s civil directorate.

There were heraldic crests bearing cogged eagles, crossed hammers over anvils, iron horns, and cast-copper serpents.

The blind eye was completely absent from every official registry.

Dante rose slowly, walking to the reference counter of the ancient history division, where an elderly demon in a black wool robe and stacked reading glasses was sorting brass return tokens.

”Pardon me,” Dante said quietly, resting his palms on the wooden rail.

The archivist peered through his thick lenses with yellow eyes.

”Requests for fourth-floor restricted folios require an requisition voucher signed by an officer holding the rank of major or above,” the clerk wheezed with the weary cadence of a man who repeated the sentence fifty times a day.

”I am looking for historical records regarding the deepest foundations of the Citadel,” Dante kept his tone calm and detached. ”The civil engineering schematics cut off at forty meters. Does an addendum exist detailing excavations down to two hundred meters?”

The demon paused, brass token suspended in his hand.

He removed the top pair of glasses, studying Dante from head to toe with sudden, heavy scrutiny.

”No addenda exist regarding the Citadel’s subterranean strata, kid,” the archivist said, his voice dropping two octaves, inaudible beyond three paces. ”Beneath the fourth boiler tier, there is no map because there is nothing meant to be surveyed by civil authorities. That soil belongs to the bedrock of the plain.”

”What about a sigil depicting a blind eye set within a silver hexagon?” Dante pressed, his gray eyes locked onto the archivist’s gaze. ”Does that appear in records of ancient guilds or extinct orders from the unification era?”

The old demon’s claw twitched against the wood.

He made no scene, and he did not call for the lobby guard. He simply dropped the brass token into his drawer, shut his ledger with a muffled thud, and leaned over the counter until his snout was inches from Dante’s chest.

”Listen to me, boy,” the archivist whispered with a breath smelling of ancient paper dust. ”You look like you rolled off a farm cart yesterday with Ash Waste grit still wedged in your boots. If you have any love for your mortal husk and don’t want to finish your days in an unmarked slag ditch out in the north district, keep your mouth shut and never speak that design inside this library again.”

”It is merely a heraldic inquiry...”

”It is no inquiry at all,” the archivist cut him off with the finality of a cold blade. ”Things absent from these volumes do not exist for the free citizens of this empire. Gather your packs, wake your overgrown friend drooling at table seven, and go hunt marsh beasts like sensible folk.”

The clerk turned his back without waiting for a reply, vanishing through a heavy timber door that led into the deeper staff stacks.

Dante remained rooted before the desk for five seconds.

The archivist’s terror confirmed every word.

The man in the white jacket and the blind-eye organization were no frontier campfire tales spun by broken scavengers. They were a classified state secret, an apparatus operating beneath this empire powerful enough to set the claws of a Level 30 scholar trembling over an empty desk.

Dante walked back to table seven.

He touched Maria’s shoulder with his right hand.

The girl opened her eyes instantly, blinking hard against the hall’s dim light.

”Torture over?” she asked, dragging her jacket sleeve across the corner of her mouth to wipe away dry drool.

”Over,” Dante began stacking the five heavy tomes to return them to the sorting cart. ”There is nothing in these pages, Maria. Their history was scrubbed clean from this archive, just like it was on Earth’s internet.”

Maria stood from the wooden chair, her vertebrae popping with a crack that drew glares from two students nearby.

She settled her greatsword over her back with a smirk that carried nothing academic.

”Told you the library was a waste of time, Dante,” she said, striding toward the bronze exit doors with long steps. ”People who do what was done to Miro’s family don’t write books about their own butcher work. If we want the trail on these bastards, we’re going to have to beat the answers out of the right people.”

Dante turned in their reader badges at the brass kiosk, descending the black basalt steps beside her.

Late afternoon was painting the Capital in a muddy amber glare, the elevated trams cutting the skyline with the persistent hum of industrial power.

The official path of scholarly research was closed.

Yet the certainty of where the nest lay was sharper than ever, and they had months of hunting ahead to turn that certainty into the physical force needed to breach those two hundred meters of solid stone.
