Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

The steel tip of the forty-pound greatsword scraped against the ceiling beam of room fourteen, shearing off a sliver of dry wood that dropped directly onto Maria’s mattress.

The girl checked her practice swing mid-stroke, exhaling through her nose in annoyance.

”Can’t train in here,” she grumbled, resting the flat of the blade across her shoulder. ”One bad step backward, and the crossguard shatters the window glass, dumping me onto the elevated tram tracks.”

Dante sat in the oak chair, finishing his polish on the brass ring set with the blue quartz stone he had purchased on their way out of the arcane consortium. The ring now gleamed on the middle finger of his right hand, seated snugly over his knuckle.

”The inn is temporary,” Dante tucked the felt cloth into his pocket. ”The four-armed desk clerk already eyed our rucksacks twice in the hallway this morning. If we start scribing the floorboards with conductive chalk or hauling metal bundles through the rift in here, he’ll call the district patrol to figure out where all this untagged freight is coming from.”

”Then we need a house,” Maria sheathed the greatsword into its leather scabbard with a crisp snap. ”A place with high ceilings, thick doors, and no bespectacled old bastard tracking who comes and goes.”

”Buying is out of the question,” Dante pulled the leather pouch of gray scrip from the desk drawer. ”The forge smith said even a modest masonry home in the Third District won’t go for less than eighty thousand scrip, plus the Forge Council’s concession tax. We have forty-eight hundred scrip on hand. A mid-tier rental, however, fits our budget with plenty of breathing room.”

They locked room fourteen with the brass key, headed down the staircase, and stepped out onto the cold steel pavement of the elevated rail avenue.

The real estate office for the western sector was tucked down a broad cross-street paved with cast-iron flagstones, sandwiched between a steam boiler workshop and a coarse flour warehouse: Master Rorik’s Properties and Leases.

The interior of the building smelled of yellowed paper and stamp ink.

Behind a tall dark oak counter, a slender demon with ashen skin wore a brass monocle strapped to his right eye socket by a thin leather band. His short horns swept back tight against his skull, and his denim sleeves were rolled to the elbows, exposing long forearms stained with black ink.

The broker didn’t even look up when the door creaked against the jamb.

”If you’re here to buy commercial frontage along the tram line, baseline rates jumped ten percent on account of the Legion expansion tax,” the demon stated, his dip pen scratching rapidly across a ledger sheet.

”We’re looking for a residential lease with an enclosed workshop space,” Dante said from the counter’s edge, his tone steady and direct. ”On the outer fringe of the Third District. Thick basalt masonry walls, ceilings over ten feet, and an independent entrance with no shared hallways.”

The demon paused his pen on the parchment, lifting his monocle to look them over.

He took in Maria’s six-foot-three frame, the broad blade strapped across her back, and Dante’s calm posture.

”High ceilings and shock-insulated construction don’t come cheap, kid,” the broker said, pulling open an iron drawer beneath the counter to produce three tin clipboards holding typed property manifests. ”The Council levies an extra noise surcharge on anyone running forge work or heavy maintenance.”

”I have hard currency from the Central Bank,” Dante dropped the leather purse onto the counter. The solid thud of compacted scrip echoed through the quiet office. ”Show us your best listings ready for immediate move-in.”

The broker selected two metal clipboards and filed the third away.

”I’ve got two options in the Boilermakers’ Village, six blocks out, right against the slag drainage canal wall,” the man slid the clipboards across to them. ”The first is a two-story townhouse with a workshop in the rear. The previous tenant overhauled hydraulic pistons for the Legion and died last month. The second is a single-story masonry warehouse with a stone cellar.”

”We’ll see the townhouse first,” Maria decided, scanning the pen-and-ink schematic on the manifest. ”It has a walled courtyard.”

The Boilermakers’ Village was a neighborhood of wide, quiet avenues, occupied almost exclusively by heavy metalwrights and retired locomotive mechanics.

Unlawfully taken from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

None of the bustling commerce of the district center reached here. The properties were solid structures of dark gray stone and riveted iron plates, separated by wide service alleys where tool wagons could turn around without snarling traffic.

Property number forty-two sat at the end of a cul-de-sac dead-ending at the stone embankment of the drainage canal.

The building was a two-story dark basalt masonry townhouse roofed in corrugated iron sheeting.

Out front, a double door of heavy timber reinforced with two-inch steel angle brackets opened straight into a ground-floor workshop boasting thirteen-foot ceilings. The floor was laid in rough flagstones, scored down the middle by a drainage trench capped with a cast-iron grate.

Beside the workshop, a padlocked side gate opened into an interior courtyard paved with slag cobblestones, boxed in by twelve-foot stone walls that completely blocked any view from adjoining properties.

Maria strode into the courtyard with heavy steps, surveying the open ground with calculating eyes.

Taking two long paces into the center of the yard, she drew the greatsword from her back and whipped a full horizontal cleave through the air, torquing her entire frame with thirty-three Strength.

The steel parted the wind with a deep whistle.

The tip of the blade cleared the nearest stone wall by more than three feet without brushing a single obstruction.

”Room is solid,” she said, looking up at the high perimeter. ”I can swing the long blade without worrying about clipping the ceiling, and nobody out on the street can peek at what we’re running in here.”

Dante was already inspecting the ground-floor interior.

He rested his right palm against the basalt walls, feeling the unyielding density of the stone blocks.

The mineral makeup was ideal for arcane containment. He could scribe conductive chalk arrays across the flagstones without Mana resonance bleeding into the street’s electrical grid. In addition, a timber staircase at the back of the workshop led up to the living quarters on the second floor.

The upper level offered two private bedrooms with double-paned windows sealed by bronze latches, a compact parlor, and a bathroom floored in ceramic tile with iron plumbing tapped into the municipal steam main, ensuring continuous hot water without relying on firewood or coal.

The monocled broker waited by the workshop entrance, hands folded behind his back.

”Rent is six hundred scrip a month,” the man stated, tapping his boot against a loose flagstone. ”Plus six hundred scrip security deposit upfront to cover any pipe damage. Sign a six-month lease, and I’ll drop it to five-fifty a month.”

Dante ran the arithmetic in under two seconds.

Five hundred and fifty a month, plus five-fifty deposit, totaled eleven hundred scrip at signing.

They held forty-eight hundred. Paying eleven hundred left them with thirty-seven hundred in liquid cash for rations, tooling, and daily upkeep, more than enough to float the household for over six months without having to sell another ounce of ore.

”We’ll take the six-month term,” Dante drew the roll of gray notes from his inner vest pocket.

He counted eleven hundred-scrip Central Bank bills right before the broker’s eye, laying the cash on an iron workbench left behind in the shop.

”I want the deposit receipt and the lease drafted under the standard Chamber of Forges template right now.”

The demon scooped up the bills with practiced efficiency, verified the purple ink stamps against the daylight from the doorway, and unzipped the leather portfolio under his arm.

He filled out two copies of the standardized lease form in dark ink, signed with a swift stroke, and offered the dip pen to Dante.

Dante signed using his plain human name, omitting titles or class identifiers, and pressed his right thumb into an ink pad to seal his print in the corner of the document.

The broker struck Dante’s copy with the district registry’s iron seal, then drew a ring of three heavy brass keys from his coat pocket.

”The place is yours through the end of the term,” the broker handed the keys to Dante. ”Water and steam utility manifests are billed on the tenth. Slip past five days overdue, and the Legion shuts off line pressure.”

”It won’t be late,” Dante replied, stowing his copy of the agreement into his pack.

The broker gave a brisk nod, adjusted his monocle, and walked down the street without looking back, pulling the outer iron gate shut behind him.

The quiet of house number forty-two settled over them, dense and secure.

Maria pushed the workshop’s double doors shut, dropping the heavy cast-iron crossbar into place with a solid clunk that rang against the thirteen-foot ceiling.

She leaned her broad back against the barred timber, crossed her arms over her brigandine, and surveyed the expansive empty shop.

”Done,” she said, her voice carrying a relaxed relief she hadn’t shown since stepping off the train. ”Our own roof. No snooping innkeepers and no fellow passengers snoring on the gravel.”

”We head back to the inn now to retrieve our four cargo packs,” Dante pocketed the keys. ”As of tomorrow, this floor is our definitive staging ground in the First Great Continent.”

Maria peered out toward the stone courtyard through the back of the workshop, popping her knuckles with a faint smirk.

They had their own fortress in the heart of the Capital, the hundred-and-eighty-day quest was half-cleared, and they finally had all the room needed to turn this dark townhouse into a launchpad for the next tier.
