Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

The funnel tactic was conceived in the early hours of day eight, after Dante spent two hours studying the movement patterns of lesser automata through the grates of an exhaust vent.

The machines of Piston Gorge possessed neither organic brains nor predatory animal instincts. They functioned on elementary mechanical directives stamped into perforated copper drums rotating within their brass craniums: seek heat sources to feed internal boilers, salvage loose conductive ore, and eliminate any vibration deviating from the harmonic rhythm of the plain’s titanic drive pistons.

”They’re dumb,” Dante had observed while chewing a strip of cold dried beef on the boiler’s wooden pallet. ”They only appear dangerous because they’re heavy and hit with cast-iron mass. But their patrol routines are as predictable as the timetable on the route three bus down our old street.”

At six in the morning on day nine, he put the contraption to work.

The designated site was a dead-end chute nestled between two fifty-foot reinforced concrete pilings supporting slag conveyor track number seven. The corridor measured barely six feet wide by sixty feet deep, terminating against a wall of dense volcanic rock.

At the far end of the alley, Dante set up the decoy.

The bait was simple: a two-inch copper pipe hooked to a compact camp furnace burning a slurry of heavy mineral oil and sulfur coal shavings. Along the pipe’s exterior, Dante inscribed three continuous oscillation runes using his conductive copper-doped chalk.

When he fed the circuit five points of Mana, the runes vibrated the copper tube at a high-pitched frequency, discharging a metallic screech that mimicked a high-pressure relief valve on the verge of rupturing, joined by a thin plume of black smoke smelling of overheated lubricants.

To any patrolling automaton within a thousand feet, that signal communicated a single imperative: a damaged boiler ready for salvage as combustible scrap.

Maria took up her position at the mouth of the alley, tucked behind the corner of the left concrete piling.

She gripped her forty-pound greatsword two-handed, resting the flat against her iron-armored shoulder. Her greaves were locked firm to her legs, and she kept her breathing shallow so as not to stir the dry gravel underfoot.

Dante crouched on a steel girder thirteen feet above, a stick of chalk ready in his left hand and his open reagent pouch at his feet.

”First one’s coming,” Dante whispered through the party link.

The distinctive grind of iron treads chewing floorplates echoed into the alley entrance.

The machine rumbled into the narrow gap without hesitation. Standing six and a half feet tall, with twin circular saws idling at low revolutions and frosted glass sensors locked onto the black smoke curling from the far end, it drove down the center of the lane, its treads throwing up puffs of gray dust.

Dante extended his left index finger from the overhead gantry.

Vertical Runic Barrier.

A sapphire plane of force dropped with a sharp snap right across the mouth of the alley, six feet behind the machine, sealing the only exit.

The automaton halted in its tracks instantly. The mechanical cylinder inside its skull clicked as it pivoted, its saws screaming as they wound up to high speed to chew through the barrier.

Maria took a single broad stride out from the shadow of the concrete pillar.

She did not yell. She did not sprint. She stepped into the flank of the construct with the cold precision of a slaughterhouse butcher carving hanging beef.

Her [Lead Impact] skill drained five Mana points from her bar.

The broad greatsword crashed down along a descending diagonal, exploiting the tight quarters that prevented the machine from pivoting its saw arms in defense. The strike bit into the exact junction where the central engine block mated with the drive tread axle.

CRACK.

The tempered steel sheared through twin steam conduits in one clean sweep.

The automaton lost all pneumatic pressure in an instant. Its saws spun down to a dead halt, and its iron bulk toppled forward, clattering onto the gravel with the hollow ring of loose cogs spilling across the deck.

Maria didn’t wait for the vapor to clear.

Planting her heavy boot onto the fallen chassis, she drew a twenty-inch heavy prybar from her toolbelt and slammed the tip into the machine’s chest hatch. Leveraging her twenty-seven Strength, she pried the riveted plate loose with a sharp wrench, plunged her gloved hand into the steaming cavity, and tore out the conductive copper core along with the synthetic pouch holding the gray payment scrip of deceased forge hands.

”Thirty scrip and nine pounds of clean copper,” she tossed the haul into the canvas bin Dante had lowered to the ground.

”Next,” Dante dismissed the runic barrier with a flick of his wrist and fed another five Mana into the decoy at the back of the alley.

The contraption began to screech once more.

Ten minutes later, the second automaton walked into the funnel.

A Level 18 Cog Tracker. The construct never even spotted Maria. The forty-pound blade crashed into its nape before its optical lenses could calibrate focus on the bait smoke.

The sequence settled into assembly-line regularity.

They ran the identical cycle eighteen times over the course of that day.

Stolen from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Dante timed the intervals with laboratory precision: three minutes to regenerate the ten Mana spent on the barrier, five minutes of acoustic decoy vibrations to draw an isolated patrol, ten seconds of clean execution with a single swing from Maria, and two minutes to salvage the high-value components before dumping the worthless iron chassis down the conveyor chute.

Accumulated experience climbed up their interfaces in steady, predictable lines.

At midday, they broke for half an hour to chew dry bread with sardines and sip warm water from the thermal flask, perched on the edge of the iron gantry while the decoy sat cold on the floor below.

Maria scrubbed black oil from her hands with a kerosene-soaked rag.

”Feels like that night shift at the textile plant where my mom folded fabric,” she remarked, tossing the tin lid into a scrap bin. ”Only difference is, there the machines stitched pants, and here I take the machines’ heads off.”

”The logic of the assembly line was designed for this very purpose,” Dante replied, drinking half a cup of treated water. ”Minimize caloric burn, eliminate human error, and maximize yield per operating hour. If we kept chasing beasts down the open canyon, we’d burn three times the rations and risk another cracked bone on every corner.”

”Payout isn’t bad either,” she pointed to the canvas basket in the corner of the girder, packed with copper cores and over six hundred scrip in gray First Continent bank notes. ”Ten more days on this routine, and we buy those armored train passes without haggling for a discount.”

Dante nodded, slipping the empty tin into their refuse pack.

He pulled out a fresh chalk stick to touch up the rune lines worn thin by conveyor dust.

Everything was running strictly according to calculated plan.

Eight hundred feet away, atop an inspection walkway suspended beneath the rusted crane tower number four, someone’s eyes remained fixed on the alley.

The watcher lay prone on a perforated steel grating, shrouded in a mottled gray canvas tarp that mirrored the rust and grime around him. He had not moved a muscle in nearly four hours, offering not a whisper of sound that could register above the dull, percussive thrum of the valley pistons.

A cast-iron half-mask covered the lower half of his face, perforated with circular breathing vents, worn beneath a heavy duster of oilskin leather bearing weld-scars along the sleeves.

Before his eyes, he held a pair of cylindrical brass spotting optics, finely calibrated via a manual vernier ring.

The glass brought the corridor into pristine focus.

He watched as the nineteenth automaton entered the chute. He observed the translucent blue wall snap into place without the boy making so much as a dramatic gesture or incanting an audible syllable. And he watched the six-foot-three girl step from the shadows to cleave the machine’s tempered steel frame into two pieces with a single downward stroke.

The man slowly exhaled through the vents of his iron mask.

He had hunted this gorge for over fifteen years. He had seen scores of mercenaries, legion deserters, and poachers rappel down into the dark to gamble their lives against Tier Two constructs. Most died within their first week: boxed into open channels, slipping on slick grease, or crushed beneath heavy tracks.

These two were an anomaly.

They were too young. They carried neither the crooked slouch of ash miners nor the drab coveralls of penal souls fleeing forced labor.

He swept the brass optic over the boy’s frame.

The kid’s physical stats were pitiful. Thin arms, sluggish stride, zero muscle density to suggest melee conditioning. Yet the speed with which the boy calculated the timing of that luminous ward was freakish. And there was something on his back beneath the leather jerkin, a subtle ridge of bone that the spotter couldn’t fully discern through the steam haze, but which radiated a complete vacuum of magical resonance, as if the space surrounding that exact coordinate were being swallowed whole.

Then the lenses shifted to the girl.

The man tightened his gloved fingers around the focus ring.

Her frame was dense and formidable, possessing an altitude that rivaled the half-blood berserkers of the Second Continent. Yet what caught his eye was not the greatsword or her strength in shattering engine blocks.

It was the faint scent the morning draft had drifted toward his perch hours earlier when she wiped her neck.

It wasn’t merely human sweat. There was a subtle trace, undetectable to anyone unfamiliar with the fauna of the lowermost trenches, of primordial sulfur and deep-well fire bound to her skin.

The man pulled a small notebook bound in grease-stained leather from his coat pocket.

With a stub of carpenter’s graphite, he scratched three lines across the yellowed sheet:

Two targets. Rapid-deploy barrier summoner and heavy concussion vanguard.

Hunting pattern: Static funnel ambush using acoustic lure in conveyor seven alley.

Estimated daily haul: Over twenty high-purity copper cores and legion scrip.

He slipped the notebook back into his coat pocket.

Beside his right elbow, resting in a welded bracket against the crane beam, lay a heavy, long-barreled rifle with a brushed-steel bolt and an optical scope mounted over the receiver. The weapon chambered fifty-caliber armor-piercing rounds, engineered specifically to punch through golem carapaces from a quarter of a mile away.

The man rested a gloved forefinger along the wooden stock, but did not cock the action.

He was a patient man.

He knew that engaging two fresh targets inside a bottleneck, with the girl fully rested and the summoner carrying a full tank of Mana, was suicide that would leave his own corpse rotting in the ditch. He was in no hurry.

Piston Gorge always collected its toll from anyone lingering too long in one spot. Sooner or later, a Tier Three machine would be drawn by the pile of scrap carcasses rotting in the disposal trench, or a blowout in a secondary steam pipe would force them to abandon the bottleneck.

When that moment arrived, when the girl’s arms were seized by exhaustion and the boy had no Mana left to raise his wall, he would drop from his perch to collect the copper bounty, the forged steel, and whatever anomaly was concealed beneath that leather jerkin.

The man pulled the gray tarp back over his head, melting into the rust of the master girder, and resumed his vigil in the silent steam.

Down below, on the gantry thirteen feet over the conveyor alley, Dante halted his chalk stroke.

He remained crouched, left hand suspended an inch off the metal plating.

His twenty-four Wisdom triggered a dry ping at the base of his skull. It was neither a system prompt nor a health alert. It was a cold needle jabbing between his shoulder blades, right where the basilisk bone plate holding the Primordial Iron Core rested against his spine.

On pure instinct, Dante turned his head slowly toward the heights of the gorge.

The billowing steam rising from the pistons veiled the uppermost superstructure in an unbroken white curtain. He peered toward the distant tower of crane four, narrowing his gray eyes to pierce the hot grease haze.

Nothing moved. Only the rusted lattice of structural trusses and the slow drift of a wire rope pulley at the summit of the tower.

Maria looked up, noticing the tension in his neck.

”What is it, Dante?” she asked in an undertone, tightening her fingers around the greatsword’s grip. ”Something crawling along the ceiling?”

Dante held his gaze on the crane for three full seconds before lowering his eyes and sliding the chalk stick back into the wooden case at his belt.

”Nothing,” he answered, his tone flat, deliberately relaxing his shoulders. ”Just an irregularity in the steam echo. Thought I saw movement.”

He dropped lightly from the girder, landing beside her on the floor.

”We’ve logged twenty kills today,” Dante said, hauling the canvas bin of copper cores up. ”Quota is met. Let’s kill the lure and get back to the boiler.”

Maria glanced down the empty chute, then checked his face. She asked no questions, having learned long ago to heed the pings of that thirty-point intellect.

”Fine by me,” she slung the heavy bin strap over her shoulder and latched her greatsword across her back with a sharp click of her buckle. ”We change sectors tomorrow. This burnt copper stench is starting to turn my stomach.”

They packed their gear in practiced silence, smothered the embers of the decoy under a heap of black dirt, and began their ascent along the nylon lines toward the safety of the hollow boiler’s four-inch armor walls.

Eight hundred feet above, the gray tarp draped over the crane beam remained motionless, tracking every pace of the two youths until the seal of their shelter hatch shut tight.
