Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

The shock of landing on the embankment gravel was absorbed by the fluid bend of Maria’s knees.

The girl rolled over her shoulder across the black stone, coming to a stand in the drainage ditch with her right hand already clamped to the hilt of the forty-pound greatsword. Dante touched down six feet behind her, skidding three paces through the loose dirt before steadying the weight of his mountain rucksack with a quick shift of his hips.

Express 404 rumbled onward across the concrete viaduct, its steel wheels clicking over rail joints in a rhythm that gradually faded as the train disappeared around the bend of the classification yard.

Dante brushed the dark dust from the sleeve of his vest with his right hand, looking ahead.

The sheer physical mass of the wall’s foundation stole the breath from his chest.

From a distance atop the rail viaduct, the structure had been staggering. But here, standing in the drainage ditch a hundred and fifty feet from its footings, the perimeter barrier of the Central Bastion of Iron Souls reared like a sheer mountain of forge-welded armor plate. It rose sixty feet straight up in continuous dark steel, with heavy rivets the size of dinner plates binding the seams between sheets.

Every hundred and fifty feet, reinforced concrete watchtowers cantilevered out over the void, bristling with four-barreled autocannons and electric searchlights sweeping the dirt berm with harsh yellow beams.

”That’s no railroad-tie fence like in Low Ember,” Maria remarked, looking up at the crest of the works with her chin raised. ”This thing could eat heavy artillery barrages all day without cracking.”

”Eight centuries of Legion engineering,” Dante answered, tucking his lead medallion beneath his shirt to avoid drawing unwanted attention. ”The North Cargo Gate sits a quarter of a mile down the right fork. We blend into the afternoon shift traffic.”

They scrambled up the gravel embankment and joined the arterial roadway feeding the industrial sector’s main portal.

The road was six lanes wide, packed hard by the dual tires of steam transports.

Hundreds of iron wagons drawn by draft lizards, crude pickup trucks powered by coal boilers, and thousands of foot laborers funneled toward a monumental archway breached through the steel curtain wall. The portal spanned thirty feet wide by fifty feet high, flanked by twin armored guardhouses where Legion infantry regulated traffic with bolt-action rifles held across their chests.

Dante and Maria merged into the pedestrian queue.

The duty sergeant at the checkpoint was a squat demon with iron plates riveted directly to his lower jawbones and a slate-gray cap of the metropolitan guard.

He took in Maria’s height, measured the length of the forty-pound greatsword strapped across her back, and held out a gloved hand.

Maria drew the lanyard from her collar, presenting the lead medallion bearing the mechanical eagle and the official serials Goran had stamped. Dante mirrored her gesture beside her.

The sentry scraped a claw across the relief of the military stamp, tested the density of the lead with a light rap against the guardhouse rail, and grunted through his snout.

”Free laborers cleared for the Third District. Stay on the elevated rail thoroughfare and keep clear of the central foundry gates.”

He shoved the tokens back and gestured toward the archway with his bayonet tip.

No names were recorded. In an empire of four million souls, two armed porters carrying valid Legion labor chits were just two more pairs of hands to feed the city’s blast furnaces.

They crossed beneath the shadow of the sixty-foot wall and emerged onto the other side.

The visual impact brought Maria’s boots to a dead stop on the iron flagstones.

”Damn...” The word slipped from her lips in a soft gasp.

The Capital had nothing in common with the dusty outpost of Low Ember or the rusted ruins of Piston Gorge.

It was a vertical metropolis of cast iron, heavy brickwork, and pressurized steam sprawling in layered tiers as far as the eye could see beneath the dark continental sky.

Broad avenues paved with steel tiles were bisected by elevated streetcar tracks running thirty feet up, spraying azure sparks from their electric contact shoes. Across the facades of five- and six-story tenements, polished brass conduit bundles ran parallel courses, carrying high-pressure steam and pneumatic mail capsules with a relentless hiss of compressed air.

Street illumination relied on no cheap kerosene. Arc lamps sealed within thick glass globes radiated bright, clinical white light from every iron pylon, banishing shadows from the central avenue.

The crowd surging along the sidewalks was a swarming anthill of infernal society.

High-caste demons wore dark wool overcoats tailored with brass buttons and fedoras, soul brokers marched with iron briefcases chained to their wrists, city guard squads patrolled in six-man files encased in full suits of black plate, and hundreds of laborers in gray denim overalls pushed tool carts loaded with machined components.

Then came the atmospheric pressure.

The moment they took their first ten strides into the district, the ambient Mana density slammed into Dante’s chest with the physical weight of a lead slab.

The arcane concentration of this soil was crushing, precisely as Goran had warned back at the tavern.

The dormant matrix of the ivory wings across his back gave a twitch of warning, but the copper dispersal grooves he had carved into his boot soles engaged in that exact millisecond. The surplus energy gathering at his shoulder blades was shunted down through his legs and discharged directly into the steel tiles beneath his heels, snapping in tiny, invisible electrical grounding pulses under the rubber.

The [Ash Veil] remained rock-solid and stable, releasing not a single spark into the ambient air.

Maria drew a deep breath, her thirty-two Constitution soaking in the localized gravitational pull with the unyielding poise of a load-bearing column.

”The air is heavy here,” she noted, adjusting her greatsword sling. ”Feels like gravity is dragging twenty extra pounds on each leg.”

”It’s the containment field of the central matrix,” Dante explained in an undertone, skirting the plate-glass storefronts of hardware shops along the avenue. ”The entire city sits atop a primordial ether node. Everyone residing here develops higher baseline physical stats under this perpetual pressure.”

They walked for forty minutes down the grand avenue, following cast-brass placards directing traffic toward the Third District, the sector allotted to free laborers, independent workshops, and transient boardinghouses.

As they put distance between themselves and the northern curtain wall, the heavy factories gave way to multi-story red-brick walkups roofed with corrugated sheeting, where open storefronts hawked coarse grain flatbreads, steaming vegetable broths, and work garments stitched from mineral-fiber weave.

They stopped before a three-story building boasting clean masonry work and a riveted iron shingle over its double timber doors: Dry Rail Inn.

Dante pushed through into a small lobby surfaced in gray hydraulic tile, facing a mahogany counter fronted by heavy brass security grates.

Behind the bars sat an elderly four-armed demon with filed-down horn nubs, wearing two pairs of reading glasses stacked on his snout to audit a leather-bound ledger.

”Private double room,” Dante placed his hands on the counter. ”Reinforced interior iron deadbolts and running hot water off the service boiler.”

The innkeeper looked up with two of his four yellow eyes through the thick lenses, surveyed Maria’s towering frame standing behind Dante with her sword tip nearly grazing the ceiling trim, then evaluated their bulging copper rucksacks.

”One hundred and twenty scrip a week,” the old clerk rasped, swiveling the register with one left hand while holding a fountain pen with his right. ”Paid in advance with clean Central Bank notes. No out-of-province guild scrip, and no shooting in the hallways after ten.”

Dante pulled two hundred-scrip notes from his belt pouch, laying the purple-stamped gray paper on the desk.

The old demon checked the watermark against the wall’s arc lamp, counted out eighty scrip in change, and slid a heavy brass key tagged with the number fourteen across the counter.

”Second floor, end of the hall to the left,” the clerk returned to his bookkeeping. ”Heater coal is serviced every morning at seven.”

They took the solid timber staircase up to the second landing.

The hallway was illuminated by amber glass sconces every three doors, the floor covered in a thick wool runner that muffled the heavy thuds of Maria’s boots.

Dante slotted the key into room fourteen’s lock, turned it two full rotations, and pushed open the heavy door braced with iron angle irons.

The room was remarkably spacious for frontier standards.

Two iron-framed twin cots mounted with heavy coil mattresses sat draped in clean wool blankets, anchored by an oak table with two high-backed chairs in the center, a wardrobe recessed into the brick, and a cast-iron radiator tapped into the municipal steam main maintaining an even, pleasant seventy degrees.

Along the exterior wall, a double-paned window latched with bronze fittings looked out over the elevated transit line and the illuminated chimneys of the industrial wards.

Maria closed the door behind them, threw both cast-iron deadbolts, and leaned her forty-pound greatsword into the corner between the wall and the wardrobe with a solid crash.

THUD.

She dropped hard onto the edge of the first cot, prying off her boots with two swift tugs, releasing a long sigh that let her broad shoulders sink an inch all at once.

”Mattress coils,” she croaked in relief, running a palm across the clean blanket. ”Actual mattress springs after two weeks sleeping on crushed iron ore.”

Dante set the two heavy rucksacks down beside the oak table, peeled off his leather vest, and sat on the opposing cot with his forearms on his knees.

The quiet of the locked room was immense, scored only by the gentle hiss of steam through the radiator pipes.

They had crossed twenty-six hundred miles of barren waste, survived mechanical ambushes, leaped from a rolling military train, and now sat securely lodged within the heart of the First Great Continent, cash in their pockets and their identities shielded beneath the [Ash Veil].

In that exact second of respite, their mental interfaces flared in mid-air.

The chime of a glass bell rang through both their skulls simultaneously, bursting with a silver clarity so vivid it illuminated the entire room.

Maria’s brown eyes widened in the gloom, staring at the line floating before her nose granting three bonus skill points.

”Three points...” she whispered in genuine disbelief. ”Three free skill points just because we beat that guy’s clock.”

Dante leaned his head back against the red brick wall behind his cot, his eyes sliding shut as a thin, exhausted smile formed on his lips.

He could feel the accumulated weight of the long journey finally leave his marrow.

The first major trial laid down by the man in the white jacket was fulfilled, the rewards were etched into their souls, and the board of this colossal empire was officially thrown open for their next move.

”We did it, Maria,” Dante murmured into the silence of room fourteen. ”Now we sleep. Tomorrow we figure out how this empire runs from the inside.”
