Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

Their definitive move into townhouse forty-two in the Boilermakers’ Village was wrapped up before nine in the morning.

The four heavy rucksacks now sat in the corner of the ground-floor workshop, beside an oak bench Dante had scraped down with a steel putty knife to strip away dried oil left by the previous tenant. Upstairs, wool sheets were smoothed across both cots, and the radiator pipe hummed with a low, steady hiss that kept the basalt walls bone dry.

Dante sat on the edge of the workbench, the plain’s map unfolded across the timber, brass protractor in hand.

”The return trip by rail to the Ash Wastes will eat the same eighteen days,” Dante said, his pencil tip tapping along the rail line. ”If we catch the outbound freight tomorrow morning just to hit the Earth penthouse for another shower, we lose over a month cooped up in an ore car eating dry flour. It’s a stupid waste of time.”

Maria was out in the center of the stone courtyard, grinding through heavy squats with the carbon steel bar racked across her traps.

She wore only black training pants and a thick athletic top, sweat running in rivers down her broad back and corded arms. Finishing her twentieth rep, she lowered the iron bar onto the cobblestones with a dull clank and grabbed her towel to wipe her face.

”I don’t want to see another train car for the next month,” she answered, her voice steady and her breathing deep and rhythmic. ”I spent nearly twenty days parked on crushed iron ore without throwing a real swing. My muscles are stiff, Dante. If I don’t smash something living today, I’m going to end up denting the workshop walls just to burn off the fuel.”

Dante slid the protractor into its case.

He understood her restlessness. Maria’s thirty-three Strength and thirty-two Constitution demanded constant caloric burn to keep her motor reflexes in peak condition. Keeping her pent up inside a locked townhouse for three more days would turn her as volatile as a sulfur hound on a short chain.

”We can’t hunt within the municipal perimeter,” Dante said, stepping down from the bench. ”Legion ordinances forbid unholstered heavy cold arms in the district streets. There’s an open zone just beyond the southern wall, though.”

He indicated a dark-green zone on the map: Tar and Ferrite Mire.

”Two and a half miles past the South Drainage Sluice Gate,” he continued. ”It’s a flood basin where hot wastewater from the municipal boilers pools with the plain’s mineral oil aquifers. Open terrain, outside the metropolitan guard’s direct jurisdiction, and the consortium manual rates the fauna as Greater Tier Two.”

Maria grinned, her brown eyes lighting up with that practical bloodlust that defined her fighting style.

”What levels are we looking at?”

”Twenty-two to twenty-six,” Dante replied, settling his heat-resistant leather vest over his chest. ”Organic beasts with mineralized carapaces. Not hollow factory automata, but living creatures with meat, blood, and predatory instincts.”

”Perfect,” she unhooked her forty-pound greatsword from the wall rack, locking the scabbard across her back with a firm click of the buckle. ”Grab your shiny new brass ring, and let’s see if this marsh has anything that can take a real hit.”

The exit through the South Sluice was nothing like the North Cargo Gate.

No ore conveyors or armored trains rolled through here. It was a low archway cut through the sixty-foot steel wall, spanned by three broad canals where steaming runoff from the foundries poured in dark torrents toward the outer valley.

Two sentries from the southern garrison manned the cast-iron tollgate.

They checked the lead medallions around Dante and Maria’s necks, verified the Legion eagle, and raised the iron crossbar without asking a question. The Legion cared little about who ventured into the wetlands. Most who passed this gate were professional skinners or basilisk-grease gatherers selling raw tallow to the soapmakers of the Second District.

A mile beyond the wall, the hard-packed gravel gave way to the black sludge of the Tar Mire.

The terrain was a waterlogged plain of viscous, dark muck, scored by pools of mineral oil burping sluggish bubbles of methane beneath the violet sky. Trunks of petrified crude-iron trees jutted from the bog every hundred feet, leafless, their gnarled boughs coated in thick gray lichen that faintly glowed in the gloom.

The air tasted of hot asphalt and decaying earth.

Their mental interfaces updated the environmental logs the moment their boots sank three inches into the shore’s muck.

[Region: Tar Mire (Outer South Sector).]

[Average Entity Level: 22 - 26.]

[Terrain Hazard: Viscous Muck (-15% Movement Speed Penalty for entities without specialized traction).]

Maria paused at the edge of an oil pool, drawing her greatsword into both hands.

The mud around her boots bubbled.

Sixty feet ahead, from behind a thicket of rusted iron reeds thriving in the hot water, two broad black snouts broke through the mire with a wet, sucking squelch.

The beasts that hauled themselves out of the mire were two gargantuan peccaries, stocky quadrupeds the size of small bulls, carrying over eleven hundred pounds of muscle apiece.

Their backs were plated in overlapping scales of black ferrite, an iron-rich mineral crust that grew straight out of the spine like a natural suit of armor. Their lower jaws mounted twin curved tusks of oxidized steel twelve inches long that jutted past their lips, grinding together with dry, grating snaps.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

[Entity: Ferrite Peccary (Greater Tier 2).]

[Level: 24.]

[Health Points: 380/380.]

”Ugly as sin,” Maria remarked, bracing her boots in the muck as she adjusted her grip on the leather hilt.

”They charge head-on, using their armored mass to trample targets,” Dante warned, halting four paces behind her.

He raised his open right hand toward the lead peccary, leveling his middle finger at the beast’s chest.

The brass ring set with blue quartz flared instantly.

Dante reached for no conductive chalk. He did not test the mud’s shear resistance with his boot, nor did he spend two seconds calculating wind drag vectors. He simply funneled forty-five Mana points straight from his soul core through the ring’s focal gem, locking his intent onto a forward dispersal arc.

[Skill Activated: [Rain of Ether Needles - Tier 1].]

[Channeling Time: 0.3 seconds.]

The result was instantaneous.

Twenty needle-thin lances of compressed blue energy erupted from the quartz in a sixty-degree cone, shredding the marsh fog with the high-pitched drone of glass hornets.

The volley hammered the left peccary square across its snout and unarmored ocular ridges.

The beast shrieked in sudden agony, the barrage puncturing the soft seams between its ferrite plates and bathing its face in azure ether vapor that sank directly into its leg joints.

[-75 HP to target.]

[Effect applied: 10% Slow for 5 seconds.]

The peccary stumbled in the mud, its front legs locking up under the dispersion shock.

”It works!” Dante said aloud, his eyes widening at the effortless cast without manual mathematics.

”My turn to test the new toys!” Maria took two lunging strides through the black sludge, charging straight at the second boar thundering in from the right flank.

The beast bore down with its snout lowered, its twin twelve-inch tusks aimed directly at Maria’s midsection with the momentum of a thousand-pound battering ram.

The girl made no move to evade.

She dug her heels ankle-deep into the muck, locked her knees with [Unshakable Stance], and triggered both her new defensive skills simultaneously.

[Active Skill: [Liquid Lead Stance] activated.]

[Passive Skill: [Reactive Impact Carapace] primed.]

The peccary’s iron tusk rammed straight into Maria’s brigandine cuirass.

CLANG-THUMP.

The impact released a concussive shock that blasted a fifteen-foot ring of mud in every direction.

The raw momentum would have hurled an ordinary Level 20 vanguard thirty feet back with crushed ribs.

Maria didn’t budge an inch.

[Liquid Lead Stance] neutralized the forced displacement entirely, anchoring her frame like a deep-driven pile in the marsh muck. Simultaneously, [Reactive Impact Carapace] absorbed twenty percent of the kinetic shock, storing the force in the fibers of her muscles while keeping the plate from crushing inward.

[-22 HP to Maria.]

[Kinetic Absorption Charge: 45/50 points.]

Maria let out a short, savage bark of laughter right in the beast’s snout, inches from yellow eyes that couldn’t comprehend why their target remained uncrushed.

”That all you’ve got, you rock-backed pig?”

Her passive skill [Devastating Cleaver] primed as she hauled her blade upward.

Maria brought the forty-pound greatsword around with both arms, funneling the kinetic surplus banked across her chest into the arc.

The steel descended in a cleaving arc that landed squarely where the ferrite nape plate met the spinal column.

The strike fell with the full leverage of thirty-three Strength backed by forty pounds of forged metal.

CRACK-SHATTER.

The mineral plate fractured into four jagged fragments. The blade drove a foot deep into the creature’s neck, severing the jugular and snapping the cervical vertebrae in one clean stroke.

Hot, dark blood erupted across the mud, and the boar toppled forward, snout plowing deep into the muck, motionless.

[-245 HP to target.]

[Target Eliminated: Ferrite Peccary (Level 24).]

The first peccary, having shaken off the slowing effect of Dante’s needles, wheel-turned to flee into the reed channel.

Dante gave it no quarter.

Stepping two paces to his flank, he leveled the brass ring at the beast’s exposed neck and loosed a [Piercing Aether Dart].

Azure light cracked from the quartz gem, spanning forty-five feet in a tenth of a second to pierce the spinal cord right at the base of the skull.

[-140 HP to target.]

[Target Eliminated: Ferrite Peccary (Level 24).]

The silence of the mire settled again, broken only by methane bubbles rising through oil pools and Maria’s heavy breathing.

The girl dragged her blade free from the fallen beast’s neck, wiping the dark blood on a dry reed cluster.

She turned to Dante, cheeks flushed from exertion, sporting an ear-to-ear grin.

”The defense ate the whole charge, Dante!” She slapped her iron cuirass, which showed not a single dent from the boar’s tusk. ”Hit me like a jackhammer and I didn’t even feel my ribs shift!”

Dante walked up to the second carcass, inspecting the clean puncture his bolt had drilled into the neck.

He glanced down at the brass ring on his right hand.

The feeling was liberating.

No trace of a headache lingered, his forearm vessels weren’t throbbing, and the entire engagement had resolved in under forty seconds against two Level 24 predators.

The ring catalyst method proved ideal for mid-range skirmishes, sparing his mental stamina for moments that truly demanded the surgical precision of manual calculations.

[Loot Identified:]

[4x High-Hardness Black Ferrite Tusks.]

[2x Crude Mineral Oil Glands.]

[40 kg Edible Game Meat.]

Maria drew a heavy boning knife from her toolbelt, kneeling beside the first carcass to saw through the roots of the iron tusks.

”We’re spending the whole afternoon out here, Dante,” she warned without pausing her sawing on the jawbone. ”There are at least ten more of these boars snorting in the reeds, and I’m hauling every pair of tusks back to the Third District butcher before nightfall.”

Dante pocketed his knife, pulled out the second canvas sack to harvest the oil glands, and surveyed the marsh horizon with a sharp smirk.

The Central Bastion had its sixty-foot walls and cybernetic marshals, but the open wild outside remained a testing ground where those with strength and method dictated their own terms of survival.
