Light Bringer: New World[LitRPG, Fantasy, a very crazy idea]

Coal Depot Twelve loomed as a black mountain sliced open by triple-gauge tracks.

They arrived at the station at four in the morning, after seven hours of swift marching along the old railway sleeper road. The air in the railyard hung so thick with soot that the electric arc lamps atop the iron poles appeared as dull, opaque yellow halos in the dark.

The train for Express 404 was already assembled along the main line.

Three gargantuan steam engines led the front, each sporting twelve-foot-diameter boilers and twelve cast-iron drive axles, coupled to fifty heavy freight cars that stretched over half a mile along the ballast bed.

Dante located the twenty-eighth car by the number welded onto the side plating: an open-top gondola car with seven-foot-high iron walls, loaded halfway with crushed iron ore.

The switchman guarding the access ladder was a gaunt demon in oil-stained blue overalls. He checked the two lead medallions hanging from Dante and Maria’s necks, ran a rough thumb over the raised relief of the Legion eagle, verified the serials with a kerosene lantern, and gave a curt nod for them to climb up.

They ascended the iron rungs and vaulted down into the gondola.

The bed of crushed iron ore sat cold and unforgiving beneath their boot soles. A thick cargo tarp, lashed with sisal ropes across the top edges of the hull, sheltered the forward half of the car, forming an improvised lean-to that blocked the biting plain wind while leaving a gap open in the center for airflow.

They were not alone inside.

Tucked in the right-hand corner of the car, huddled over straw bales and dingy wool blankets, sat four other travelers.

Two girls sat together against the steel wall. Both looked to be Maria’s age, perhaps sixteen or seventeen, wearing denim jackets patched at the elbows and work trousers cinched with wire twists, sharing a single gray wool shawl over their shoulders. One of them had two small dark horn buds nudging through her cropped bangs, while the other bore ordinary human features, her pale skin dotted with dark freckles down her arms.

Beside them, lying on his side with his back propped against a sack of coarse grain flour, lay an old man with completely white hair.

He wore a faded sheepskin coat, and the branded mark of the damned encircled his neck: six black digits weathered almost illegible with age. He drew short, wheezing breaths into his chest, coughing intermittently into a cloth rag clutched in a bony hand.

Tending to the old man was a woman in her early thirties. She had the broad, working shoulders of someone who had labored in industrial washhouses or heavy forges, hands marked with caustic soda burns, her dark eyes tracking every shift by the hatch.

When Maria landed inside with her forty-pound greatsword across her back and her iron brigandine clinking against the plate, the two younger girls shrank back against the hull, and the older woman drew a short iron bar from beneath the blanket, concealing the metal under her thigh.

Dante gave Maria a subtle hand signal with his right palm.

They crossed to the opposite corner, twelve feet clear of the other passengers.

Maria unshouldered the two large canvas rucksacks, letting them settle onto the ore with a heavy clatter of tools, laid out a dry vulcanized tarp over the gravel, and sat down, propping her greatsword in the corner within easy reach.

Dante sat beside her, uncapping their water bottle to wet his lips, parched from the march.

Neither group spoke.

At six o’clock sharp, the lead engine loosed three long, piercing whistle blasts that shook the entire coal depot.

FONNN. FONNN. FONNN.

The heavy coupler chains connecting the fifty cars jerked in sequence, the sound of iron striking iron echoing down the train until it slammed through the center of the manifest with a jolt that sent ore chunks rolling across the bed.

The steel wheels began to turn along the rails.

The train rolled out toward the west, gathering speed until the rhythmic click-clack over sleeper joints became the sole sound inside the dark compartment: clack-clack, clack-clack, clack-clack.

The first hour of travel passed in guarded, defensive silence.

The air in the car chilled as the train climbed the plain’s first geological shelf, the coal dust of the depot dropping behind them, replaced by the scent of damp rust and the cold draft whistling through the tarp seam.

Maria chewed on a strip of cured beef with unhurried calm, eyes tracing the horizon slipping past the upper slats of the iron plating.

The silence broke over a minor mechanical jolt.

The train banked hard into the curve of the valley viaduct, pitching the cargo car three degrees to port.

A tin cup of root tea resting on the gravel beside the short-horned girl broke loose, skidded over the crushed stone, rolled across the center aisle, and bumped against the toe of Maria’s left boot.

The horned girl froze. She stared at the cup at Maria’s feet, then at the Sentinel’s broad shoulders and the thick leather grip of the greatsword braced in the corner. The girl hesitated for five full seconds, terrified to take a single step toward the armed stranger.

Maria looked down at the tin on the floor.

She reached down with her left hand, pinched the rim with two fingers, and extended her long arm across the car.

”Here,” Maria said, her tone rough by habit, but devoid of hostility. ”Falls down the floor drainage weep, it’ll get caught in the axle and crush flat.”

The horned girl took two quick paces forward, snatched the cup with trembling hands, and retreated back to her wool blanket.

”Thank you...” the girl murmured in a reedy voice.

Maria leaned her back against the iron car wall again, chewing her strip of dried beef.

The other girl, the freckled one, seemed to gather courage from the exchange. She tugged the shawl tighter over her shoulders and looked toward Maria’s iron brigandine.

”Are you Legion mercenaries?” she asked, curiosity breaking through her earlier reserve. ”I saw those lead tags around your necks. My uncle wore one like that when he worked the southern convoys.”

”Not mercenaries,” Maria answered flatly, wiping meat salt on her jeans. ”Bought the tags on the Low Ember black market to hitch a ride to the Capital.”

”You’re heading to the Capital too?” The freckled girl let out a faint smile, the first glimmer of relief in that shadowed corner. ”My name is Tali. This is my sister, Vana.”

”Maria,” she answered simply, gesturing with her chin toward the youth beside her. ”And that’s Dante.”

Dante gave a brief nod, leaving his hands resting inside the pockets of his heat-resistant leather vest. He assessed the four with customary clinical caution, but the lack of hostile intent was obvious. Not a single soul among them was above Level 12.

”We’re heading to try for work in the textile mills of the Third District,” Tali continued, words flowing more easily now that the silence had cracked. ”Our father died in foundry number four last year. The foreman wanted us to sign a thirty-year indenture bond to pay off his burial in the slag. We gathered every scrap of gray scrip we had, bought black-market passes from Goran, and hopped the first train heading west.”

Maria listened without cutting in.

She knew the story by heart. You didn’t need to be native-born to Hell to recognize the refrain: bosses leveraging funeral debts, indentures that chained a laborer until they rotted on the floor, and young people fleeing toward the metropolis hoping life down the line would be less suffocating.

”The Capital has no easy mill wages, girl,” Maria said with the blunt weight of someone who spent seven years bartering every scrap of iron on the market. ”There are more hands looking for work than machines to spin. If you don’t have kin in the lower wards, you’ll end up scrubbing slag basins for half a bowl of mash a day.”

”We know,” Vana, the horned sister, spoke for the first time, her voice firmer than she looked. ”In the Third District, the Legion can’t execute recovery warrants from the Low Ember guilds. Over there we’re free, even if we sleep in canvas flophouses.”

The older woman, who had kept her hand clamped on the concealed iron bar beneath her blanket, slowly dropped her shoulders.

She withdrew her hand from the weapon, reached for a tarnished brass thermos, and poured a measure of warm water into a plastic cap for the coughing old man beside her.

”She speaks the truth, girls,” the woman said, her voice carrying the deep gravel of someone who had breathed furnace smoke for decades. ”The Capital pities no one. My name is Cida. This is Master Jabor, my father.”

The old man lifted weary eyes from his soiled cloth, offering a frail nod toward Dante and Maria before sipping the water slowly.

”What ails the old man?” Maria asked bluntly.

”Slag silicosis,” Cida answered, gently tucking the sheepskin coat over her father’s chest. ”Forty-two years breaking basalt rock in the deep pits of the Fourth Continent. His lungs are packed with glass grit. The clinic doctor said his soul matrix is unraveling and he won’t make it past next winter.”

She looked at the old man with a rugged, fierce tenderness, the same hard affection Maria’s mother used to display when dabbing antiseptic onto her scraped knees back on their unpaved street.

”Why drag him on an eighteen-day freight run in this cold?” Dante asked from his corner, his analytical curiosity overruling reserve.

Cida looked at Dante with dark, deep-set eyes.

”Because he asked, boy,” she answered simply. ”My father spent his whole life swearing he wouldn’t turn into boiler dust without laying eyes on the Capital’s sixty-foot steel wall for himself.”

”He said that a man who spends his entire existence at the bottom of an ore trench has the right to see where the iron he clawed from the dirt ends up before closing his eyes for good. I spent every scrip I had saved to buy these two lead tags. If he has to die, let him die looking at the steel spires of that empire, not with his face pressed into the mud of Low Ember.”

Dante gave no reply.

He looked at the white-haired man holding the plastic cap in fingers gnarled by mining rheumatism.

There was a raw, unpolished dignity in that conviction. A sense of closure that cared nothing for levels, health bars, or skill trees. Every soul inside this iron rectangle carried their own distinct freight across these tracks.

The two sisters were running from a lifetime of bonded servitude to gamble their fates in the smoke of the metropolis.

The old miner was traveling to fulfill the dying wish of an existence burned out underground.

And the two of them... they were traveling toward the center of a board that someone far vaster and far more dangerous had laid out for them, carrying the secret of ivory feathers locked beneath a bone plate and a score that was beginning to take shape in Maria’s mind.

The conversation died down gradually, like steam chilling against iron rafters.

There was nothing left to ask. Each person’s stakes had been laid bare across the gravel deck, and an unspoken mutual respect among survivors settled throughout the car without a single word needing to be written down.

Tali and Vana shared the remainder of a dry cornmeal biscuit, chewing slowly beneath the wool shawl.

Old Jabor rested his head against the flour sack, closing his eyes as his coughing subsided under the warmth of the water.

Cida stowed the brass thermos into her canvas bag, folded her arms over her knees, and kept her eyes trained on the gap in the tarp, watching over her father’s sleep.

Maria unstrapped the iron greaves from her shins to ease the pressure on her legs, tucked the plates into her pack, and stretched her long legs over the iron gravel, resting her broad shoulders against the cold iron plating of the car.

Dante propped his notebook on his lap, took up his graphite pencil, and returned to calculating the distance to their first water stop in the Slag Wastes.

The rhythm of steel wheels over track joints churned on, steady and relentless: clack-clack, clack-clack, clack-clack.

The silence left inside car twenty-eight of Express 404 held no further suspicion or combat tension. It was merely the shared stillness of six travelers who understood that the road ahead was long, bitterly cold, and that none among them was permitted to quit before the end of the line.
