Holding Their Own Space, the Family Returns to the Apocalypse

242: Leaving Songzhou BaseNow it’s fine; trouble has found us anyway and we can’t shake it off. Besides, it looks like the other party is an irredeemable old bastard, so let’s just kill to our heart’s content and vent the pent-up frustration from all these years of endurance.

Ai Yue looked at the three of them, all looking eager to try. She felt that her years of keeping them inside under the guise of ”for their own good” was actually not right; if there’s trouble, the family should face it together.

Ai Yue reached out her hand, turning all the corpses in the room into flying ash.

”Let’s go. We’ll head back, pack up, and leave. Gong Qiuqiu was kind enough to take us in, so we can’t make things difficult for him.”

Ai Yue said with a smile.

”Alright. Hey, Yueyue, is it possible for us to go straight to Da Yu Safety Tower and ’snip’ that Scarred Face’s older brother?” Ai Guosheng made a slicing motion across his neck with his thumb, looking a bit excited.

Ai Yue looked at her father speechlessly. ”Do you know who his brother is?”

Ai Guosheng said nonchalantly, ”I know. Isn’t he just the top leader?”

”You know that and still want to kill him?” Ai Yue found it hard to describe her feelings.

”Why not?”

”Dad, what gave you the illusion that the few of us could successfully kill him? He’s the top leader! He’s surrounded by an iron wall of protection!”

”So what? Look at the corpses all over the floor. Their skill level was just so-so; only one or two could actually fight,” Ai Guosheng continued.

Li Shilan slapped him without hesitation. ”Getting cocky? Don’t know the height of the sky or the depth of the earth? That dead old man didn’t give you any wine, so why are you starting to talk nonsense? I’m telling you, if you want to go to your death, go by yourself. Don’t drag us mother and daughters along.”

Li Shilan wasn’t satisfied and gave him another slap, continuing, ”Besides, how many here did you take down? Isn’t it all thanks to Yueyue and Rui Rui? Look at how arrogant you are, you’re just short of growing wings and flying into the sky. Truly showing off!”

Under the ”education of love,” Ai Guosheng’s dizzy head immediately cleared up. He chuckled sheepishly, ”Hehe, honey~ I was just saying. Why did you take it seriously? Just joking around. I’m not so proud that I don’t know there’s always someone better out there.”

Li Shilan snorted and pulled her two daughters away, ignoring the overly confident Ai Guosheng.

On the way downstairs, Ai Yue conveniently used Annihilation to make all the black-clothed men’s corpses disappear, leaving only a damaged, messy interior and some bloodstains.

”Tsk, the Gong Family’s control over the Safety Tower isn’t great either. So many people died and they haven’t even noticed.”

After coming out, Ai Guosheng clicked his tongue in wonder seeing the base was completely quiet.

Ai Yue frowned. It seemed someone inside the base was specifically helping the Scarred Old Man and his group.

Ai Yue took out the satellite phone and called Gong Qiuqiu again, but still, no one answered.

Forget it. Since things have already come to this, it doesn’t matter whether she tells him or not. As for the internal affairs of their base, they should handle it themselves; she wouldn’t get too involved.

Ai Yue’s family returned to the small courtyard and began packing, putting everything they had set up into the space.

After some thought, Ai Yue left a note, writing down the cause and effect of the situation.

She also wrote that they didn’t want to implicate them, so they left on their own.

Then, each carrying a backpack, they briskly walked toward the base entrance.

Along the way, no one came to inspect them, and they left the base smoothly.

Once outside the base’s range, Ai Yue waved her hand, and a car appeared on the open ground. It was the kaibaihe battle shield that hadn’t been used for a long time.

Ai Yue sat in the driver’s seat, feeling a surge of emotion. It had truly been a long time.

Ever since the earthquake, there had always been others with her, so she hadn’t had the chance to take out her kaibaihe battle shield.

Now, she could finally bring it out.

”Sister, where are we going next?” Ye Rui found a comfortable spot in the car and asked casually.

”Yingjin Safety Tower!”

”Huh? Why go there? I don’t want to see those two annoying pests again!” Ye Rui said pitifully.

Hearing this, Ai Yue smiled comfortably. ”We’re not going in, just going to kill some zombies!”

At those words, Ye Rui’s face dimmed. The zombies at Yingjin reminded her of sad memories.

Not hearing Ye Rui’s voice, Ai Yue quickly glanced back.

She saw that Ye Rui was like a frost-bitten eggplant, surrounded by an air of sorrow.

Ai Yue’s eyes flickered as she suddenly remembered—Mo Li had died there!

She had been careless. With so much happening, she had forgotten about Mo Li.

Ai Yue pursed her lips and said, ”It’s my fault. I forgot that’s a place of sorrow for you. We won’t go then. We’ll just work a bit harder and drive around looking for stray zombies.”

”No, let’s go there! Sister, I’m fine. I miss him too, and going there is a good chance to see him...” Ye Rui lowered her head, hidden in the shadows, speaking in a low, raspy voice.

”Rui Rui, don’t force yourself. We don’t have to go there!” Li Shilan said, feeling pained for Ye Rui.

Ye Rui sniffled and forced a relaxed smile. ”It’s okay, Auntie. If Brother Mo Li knew from the afterlife that I didn’t visit him, he’d be so angry he’d come back to life to beat me up. So, I’d better go see him!”

”That’s good. One must have the courage to face pain directly!” Ai Yue gave her an encouraging smile.

No one spoke further, and the car fell silent for a while.

Ye Rui remembered Mo Li blocking a zombie for her, getting injured and infected with the zombie virus, and eventually turning into a zombie himself.

Thinking of Mo Li throwing himself in front of her without hesitation, her heart throbbed with pain, and a stream of silent tears flowed from her tightly shut eyes.

As dusk fell, Ai Yue decided to find an open spot to set up camp. Night was not suitable for traveling; it was better to rest well.

”Sister, I’m not staying in a tent. I’ll stay in the car tonight,” Ye Rui said, her spirits low.

”I’ll start a fire. Come down, warm yourself, and eat something,” Ai Yue said.

”Sister, I’m not hungry. I just want to be alone for a bit,” Ye Rui said softly.

Ai Yue sighed inwardly, took a bag of bread, some sausages, and a bottle of sparkling water from her space and placed them beside her.

”Alright. Eat if you get hungry, don’t hold back!”

Ye Rui smiled. ”Mm, I know.”

Ai Yue left her be, moved one large and one small tent from her space to the ground, and secured them with stakes.

”Having a space is so great; it saves so much trouble!” Ai Yue said in a good mood.

Ai Guosheng and the other had started the fire by then and chimed in as well.

The three of them sat by the fire, ate a simple meal, talked for a bit, and then she let her parents return to the tent to rest while she kept watch.
