This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Don’t speak ill of Doctor Du like that,” Wu Shengnan’s mother reined in her emotional outburst and began to reassure her daughter in a low voice. ”Your father said that in order to save your leg, Doctor Du argued against amputation until he was at odds with Director Chen from the First Affiliated Hospital.”

”Really?” Wu Shengnan’s mood suddenly improved.

Du Heng wasn’t sure about the situation in the ward later, but the fact that Li Jianwei didn’t call him meant there were no issues with Wu Shengnan.

After leaving the hospital, he used the remaining daylight to complete his plans for the day. Nevertheless, due to time constraints, he only stayed for a few minutes at Xu Pinglin’s and An Chunhui’s houses before leaving.

By the following morning, Du Heng still hadn’t received a call from the Provincial First Hospital, which finally put his anxious heart at ease.

No calls meant that Wu Shengnan had no fever or increased pain, and no signs of confusion, which suggested that his medication regimen was correct and successful.

So, in the morning, he didn’t rush to the Provincial First Hospital but went to Liu Amei’s hospital room again.

Despite the New Year holiday, Liu Amei was not in the best of spirits, always appearing distracted and troubled.

But compared to before the New Year’s Eve break, Liu Amei’s overall complexion had begun to improve. Her skin became rosier, no longer the previous ash-grey color, and her cheeks had begun to fill out slightly.

The pain from the tumor was almost negligible, no longer the unbearable agony it once was.

Leaving the hospital room, Du Heng called over his niece, Du Xuejing. ”Tingting, after noon, take Liu Amei out for a stroll in the city.”

Du Xuejing was delighted to be given this assignment. She had noticed Liu Amei’s daily melancholy, but without her Little Uncle’s permission, she dared not act rashly.

If, due to her impulsiveness, Liu Amei’s treatment were delayed, it was a responsibility she couldn’t bear.

”Little Uncle, can A mei go out?”

”As I said, there won’t be a problem.”

Du Xuejing’s eyes flickered with a thought as she asked, ”So, does this mean A mei will be well soon?”

Du Heng nodded. ”According to the current situation, in one or at most two weeks, she can be discharged and lead a normal life.”

”Excellent, I’ll go now.” After she spoke, Du Xuejing took off like a shot to find Liu Amei.

Watching Du Xuejing joyously bounce off, Du Heng wondered if this outing was truly for Liu Amei to relax or just an opportunity for Du Xuejing to get out and play.

He supposed it was understandable. Since returning from the holiday, Du Xuejing had been cooped up in the Health Clinic. He hadn’t even let her attend a class reunion before the New Year. Only on the first two days of the New Year, when heavy snow stopped all traffic, had he allowed her two days off.

Watching his niece run off, Du Heng packed up, gave some instructions, and immediately drove to the Provincial First Hospital.

When Du Heng arrived at Wu Shengnan’s hospital room, it was crowded, so much so that people were standing in the corridor outside. Besides her parents and other close relatives, there were many unfamiliar faces—at least a dozen by a quick estimate. The next largest group consisted of Wu Shengnan’s colleagues, all of whom Du Heng knew. When they saw him, they all swarmed him, clamoring to ask about Wu Shengnan’s condition.

He finally managed to push his way into the room. The hospital leaders, Zhao Xingde, Li Jianwei, and Director Chen—with whom he had argued the previous day—were all waiting inside. Upon seeing Du Heng arrive, all eyes turned to him.

Their objective for the day was quite clear: to see the state of the wound treated the day before.

If necrosis continued in the treated wound or if infection set in, it would mean that Du Heng’s treatment the day before had been unsuccessful, and immediate amputation would be necessary.

If there was continued tissue necrosis but no infection and the necrotic tissue was minimal, observation could continue. Du Heng’s treatment offered hope for saving Wu Shengnan’s lower leg.

The last and most promising possibility was that no necrotic tissue had appeared on the wound after the debridement the day before.

After a brief chat, Du Heng began to slowly unwrap the bandages around Wu Shengnan’s lower leg under her expectant gaze.

As the bandage unwound layer by layer, and the gauze gradually parted from the wound, Wu Shengnan grimaced in pain, tears welling in her eyes.

However, with so many people present, her competitive spirit was ignited once again. She gritted her teeth and made every effort to control her tears, not uttering a sound.

Much of the Ointment on the wound had adhered to the gauze and was removed with it, but a small portion remained on the wound.

Separating the gauze from her lower leg intensified Wu Shengnan’s pain. The tears she had desperately tried to hold back finally fell, but she still managed to keep from crying out.

As the last bit of gauze was removed, Du Heng glanced back at Wu Shengnan lying there. Seeing large tears roll down her cheeks, he could only offer a silent apology.

Actually, there was no need to remove the gauze today, he thought. It would have been better to do it tomorrow during the second dressing change, sparing Wu Shengnan such pain.

However, Wu Shengnan’s family was extremely anxious, and the hospital staff were also worried.
