Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 371: Chapter 259: Connected Past_2

”How about this? You can rest for a few days, stroll around the town, and get used to your new life. I’m not like the Wizard. This will be your home. As long as you follow the rules, no one will force you to do anything you don’t like.”

Catherine simply nodded in silence; no one knew what she was thinking. At that moment, she noticed the sunlight shining on her. Reaching out, she touched it, feeling its warmth, and couldn’t help but murmur softly.

”The sun has risen.”

”Yes, the sun has risen,” Lance followed her gaze, a glimmer of dawn light streaming through the window.

Lance, on the other hand, didn’t have so many sentimental thoughts; his mind was filled with curses.

Damn that Old Ancestor for making me stay up all night again! Every hair I lose is a bullet, and I’ll make sure to unload them all into him! I’ll give him a real eye-opener with a cannon!

Lance made a mental note of this; he was never someone with a good temper.

”I’ll speak to Susan about your situation. If you have any issues, you can look for her. I won’t disturb your rest then.”

Lance then stood up and left the room. Catherine quickly checked it, ensuring no rituals, Curses, or similar dangers remained, before breathing a sigh of relief.

Where was the calm she had just shown when facing Lance? It was replaced by anxiety and unease, and it took a good while before she managed to calm down.

What should I do now? Run away?

At this thought, she cautiously approached the door. Carefully opening it, she found it unlocked, with no guard outside. Freedom seemed only a step away.

I’ve only just escaped from the Wizard. I can’t believe someone capable of killing a Wizard and saving me wouldn’t have a contingency plan. If I try to escape and fail, what will happen...?

The more somber a person’s thoughts, the more suspicious they become; it’s easy to get entangled in such anxieties and become conflicted.

After pondering back and forth for a good while, Catherine still couldn’t make up her mind. She decided to observe the situation for now before making any plans.

After leaving, Lance had no intention of going back to sleep but returned to his room to continue the work he hadn’t finished.

In his hands was the ledger found at the Ascension Sect’s camp, which documented its operations. Lance also discovered something very interesting within its pages: the movement of personnel and supplies between different camps.

Where do these refugees come from? Where are they sent after completing their training?

So, after examining these clues, Lance figured that there must be at least three similar camps in the vicinity.

The two or three people eliminated each day wouldn’t be enough to sustain the consumption needs of hundreds, especially since they also have rituals to conduct.

Their source of food seemed suspicious too, particularly the mention of pigs.

At first, I hadn’t paid much attention to it. But now, recalling that pile of bones, some of them indeed didn’t look human.

Even in a place like Hamlet, where life is tough, pork is precious. The main source of protein is fish.

Where did the Ascension Sect get so much pork?

Looking over the information he had summarized, Lance fell into deep thought.

HUH!

The Nun lying on the crude bed suddenly awoke, stirred by the sunlight filtering through the window.

Her memory halted at the moment before she collapsed. Only when she picked up the Holy Canon and the mace lying beside her bed did she feel a sliver of safety. Whispering a prayer, she then observed her surroundings.

No imprisonment, no deeper wounds... This seems to be an ordinary room.

She got up, faced the sunlight, and felt the divine power within her. Then, she cast a Divine Art on herself, clearing her groggy head a little.

Looking out the window, I can see townspeople passing by with smiles, greeting each other. This looks like a peaceful and tranquil small town.

Did the man from last night save me?

And just then, there was a knock at the door, a familiar voice coming through.

”Are you awake?”

The Nun realized it was the Witcher named Geralt.

When she opened the door, she saw Geralt in full gear. His unique constitution as a Witcher had worked well; after a night’s rest, he looked much better.

”What happened last night? Was the monster killed?” The Nun seemed a bit anxious, fearing what might happen if the monster had escaped.

”The man from last night is this place’s Lord. He killed the monster, rescued us, and brought us here. However, he requires us to abide by the rules and not use violence against anyone,” Geralt explained.

Having been among the Transcendents for many years, Geralt knew something about their mutual taboos. He didn’t mention that Lance had made the monster’s corpse disappear with a gesture.

The Nun in front of him, although not one of those fanatics, was still a part of the Church.

”May the Holy Flame protect him,” the Nun said, relieved, offering a prayer for the kind-hearted man.

Just then, her stomach grumbled quite naturally. The previous night’s battle must have drained her significantly. Everyone needs to eat, regardless of their beliefs.

Geralt had already eaten. He had remained in the room purely to wait for her to wake up and remind her about fulfilling her commitments, as they were, after all, companions who had fought together.

”Downstairs is a tavern. The food is average, but it’s enough to fill you up...” As he spoke, Geralt looked at the Nun quizzically. ”You do have money, right?”
