The Wizard Has A Biochip

I remained silent for several minutes, simply organizing the memories that now belonged to me.

The deeper I delved into them...

The darker my expression became.

The previous owner of this body hadn’t died from illness.

Nor from an accident.

He had committed suicide.

I slowly lowered my gaze to the table.

The books were still scattered exactly as before.

The candles continued burning silently.

Everything indicated that he had spent hours trying to study them.

Without success.

According to his memories, my parallel self had been at the Great Magic Tower of Arcangrove for only three weeks.

Three weeks.

And during all that time...

He hadn’t managed to understand a single word from the books given to the new acolytes.

Not a single sentence.

Not a single symbol.

Nothing.

I sighed.

—You idiot...

I didn’t say it in anger.

But with a mixture of frustration and pity.

I walked over to the table.

Among the books was a small glass vial, nearly empty.

I held it up before my eyes.

Only a thin layer of greenish liquid remained at the bottom.

Poison.

The memories confirmed it.

It was that very vial that had ended the life of the previous George Gil.

I slowly turned the vial in my hand.

You became so desperate... that you’d rather die than face failure?

For a moment, I remained silent.

Then I slowly exhaled.

The young man’s memories were clear.

His father.

Baron Gil.

When he discovered that his son possessed an affinity for magic, he sacrificed decades of the family’s wealth and practically mortgaged the future of the fief just to secure him a place in that tower.

The entire family’s hopes had been placed upon that boy.

Returning home without results...

Would have been the same as admitting that all those sacrifices had been for nothing.

It wasn’t exactly an easy choice.

But...

The more I explored those memories...

The more I understood that the tragedy had begun long before.

The Baron loved his son too much.

He loved him so much...

That he never corrected him.

Never scolded him.

Never forced him to face the consequences of his own actions.

From childhood, the previous George had been given everything he wanted.

The servants fulfilled his every request.

The household staff obeyed without question.

Whenever he did something wrong...

His father simply turned a blind eye.

Even when he tried to teach him the Gil family’s secret breathing technique.

A method capable of gradually strengthening the body through the control of vital energy.

The boy abandoned his training because he found it boring.

Laziness.

Pure and simple.

The Baron merely sighed...

And allowed it.

He never insisted.

The outcome was inevitable.

He grew up arrogant.

Spoiled.

Convinced that the world existed solely to serve him.

The previous George also abused the position he held.

He got several maids pregnant.

Forced himself on others.

Humiliated the servants.

Beat household staff over the most trivial reasons.

But no one dared punish him.

He was the Baron’s direct heir.

Anyone who raised their voice against him risked losing everything.

So everyone simply endured it.

Until...

He entered the Tower of Arcangrove.

And discovered a truth he had never imagined.

There...

His family name was worth absolutely nothing.

Every acolyte was the child of nobles, knights, wealthy merchants, or great mages.

When he tried to assert his authority...

He was beaten by older, stronger youths who weren’t afraid of him.

When he tried to compete intellectually...

He was utterly humiliated by others.

When he tried to study magic...

He realized he couldn’t even understand the most basic books.

And in the end...

He chose poison.

I looked once more at the small vial.

Then carefully set it back on the table.

—You lived like a tyrant...

My voice was quiet.

—...and died like a coward.

I remained silent for a few seconds.

Then I shook my head.

But now this body is mine.

I pulled out the chair.

Sat down in front of the books.

Let’s find out why you couldn’t understand them...

However, before I could open one...

An incredibly familiar voice echoed inside my mind.

[Beep...]

My entire body froze.

A moment later...

Another message appeared.

[Initializing Biochip Virtual Interface...]

My eyes widened completely.

The chair nearly toppled over as I shot to my feet.

W-What?

It was the biochip’s voice.

The very same experimental biochip I had implanted in my brain back on Earth.

My throat went dry.

I slowly raised a hand to my head.

How... that’s impossible?

That voice wasn’t coming from outside.

It was inside my mind.

And that could only mean one thing.

The biochip had crossed death...

Together with me.

[Biochip Virtual Interface v3.91]

[Initializing...]

[Verifying Core Integrity...]

[Core: 100%]

[Primary Memory: Operational]

[Neural Interface: Connected]

[Analyzing Host...]

—Biochip, you...

Before I could finish speaking, new lines appeared.

[Initiating connection to external network...]

[Searching for satellites...]

...

[No satellites found.]

[Searching for communication infrastructure.]

...

[Failed.]

[Network unavailable.]

[Attempting alternative protocols...]

...

[Failed.]

I looked around the room, illuminated only by candlelight.

Finding Wi-Fi in a medieval world would be a little strange.

I almost laughed at my own joke.

Soon, another sequence began.

[External connection impossible.]

[Initiating emergency restoration.]

[Searching for Primary Backup...]

...

[Primary Backup not found.]

[Searching for Secondary Backup...]

...

[Failed.]

[All servers unavailable.]

The backups had been stored on servers back on Earth.

Since I had truly died...

There was no possible way to access them.

For several seconds, I simply watched the messages.

Then a new one appeared.

[Suggestion: Use the host’s neural memories as a database.]

[Authorization request.]

[Allow?]

[YES]

[NO]

—Of course.

I answered out loud.

—Authorization granted.

The interface responded immediately.

[Authorization confirmed.]

[Scanning neural memory...]

...

[Memories detected.]

[Organizing database...]

A progress bar appeared before my eyes.

[3%]

[12%]

[27%]

[51%]

[78%]

[100%]

Then the hologram changed completely.

It now resembled a massive digital directory.

As though my brain had been transformed into a computer.

Inside it were two main folders.

[Neural Database]

[-George Gil (Earth)]

[-George Gil (Magic World)]

Much better.

Far more organized.

I crossed my arms.

Then an inevitable question came to mind.

—Biochip.

The interface answered immediately.

[Awaiting command.]

I stared into empty space.

—How did you come with me?

Silence.

A few seconds later...

[Query initiated.]

[Searching available records.]

...

[Searching last recorded event.]

...

[Incomplete data.]

The display began scrolling through dozens of records.

The last accessible file was the laboratory itself.

The overheating alert.

My attempt to escape.

Then...

A massive sequence of corrupted data.

As though someone had torn several pages out of a book.

The interface finally responded.

[Failure.]

[Last recorded event: Energy explosion.]

[No subsequent records found.]

[Available data: Insufficient.]

[Conclusion: Unable to determine the method of transfer between worlds.]

I slowly closed my eyes.

I had imagined as much...

I wasn’t disappointed.

In fact...

It was exactly the answer I had expected.

Not even the biochip possessed any information about what had happened after the explosion.

I turned my attention back to the books scattered across the table.

My plan had been simple.

Sit down.

Open the first book.

And try to learn the same way any ordinary student would.

But now...

That would be a waste.

The biochip had been created precisely to process information.

Absorbing data was as natural to it as breathing was to me.

I looked at the stack of books.

The previous George’s memories contained one useful piece of information.

When new acolytes arrived at the Great Magic Tower of Arcangrove, one of the instructors handed them a set of study materials and recommended a specific order in which to study them.

Unfortunately...

My previous self had never cared about that.

He had simply grabbed one of the books at random and tried to read it.

I smiled, shaking my head.

What an idiot...

I spent a few minutes reorganizing the entire stack.

First came the introductory volume.

Then the writing books.

Next came the books on numerals.

When I was done, the sequence made far more sense.

I sat down once again.

Opened the first book.

Mentally, I gave an order.

—Initiate Analysis Mode.

I paused briefly.

—Create an individual folder for every subject studied and automatically organize all acquired data.

The biochip responded immediately.

[Beep!]

[Analysis Mode activated.]

[New database structure created.]

[Automatic organization enabled.]

At that very moment, I felt a slight vibration behind my eyes.

Both of my irises took on an almost imperceptible glow.

I lowered my gaze to the first page.

I didn’t need to move my eyes line by line.

All I had to do was look.

The biochip did the rest.

[Scanning...]

[Copying information...]

[Storing...]

The letters vanished from my conscious attention almost instantly.

In less than a minute...

The entire first page had been copied into the database.

I turned the page.

Then another.

Another.

Another.

.

.

.

The pages continued to pass before my eyes.

Meanwhile...

The biochip worked without pause.

[Analyzing linguistic patterns...]

[Comparing symbol frequencies...]

[Identifying grammatical rules...]

A few minutes later, a new message appeared.

[Analysis complete.]

[New directory created.]

[Language]

1.[Magic Alphabet]

I smiled immediately.

—So that was it...

Now everything made sense.

The previous George had never managed to read those books...

Because he didn’t even know the alphabet they were written in.

It was like handing a physics textbook written in Japanese to someone who only knew English.

I closed that book.

Picked up the second one.

—Continue analysis.

[Beep.]

I began once again.

Page after page.

The biochip stored absolutely everything.

Some time later...

Another notification appeared.

[New pattern identified.]

[Content classified.]

[Language]

1.[Magic Alphabet]

2.[Magic Numerical System]

Interesting.

I spent the rest of the time repeating the exact same procedure.

Book after book.

The biochip copied.

Organized.

Cross-referenced information.

Created new directories.

Separated concepts.

Linked related subjects.

Everything happened automatically.

Whenever new knowledge was identified, it was stored in its own category.

When I finished the last volume in the stack...

I slowly leaned back in my chair.

A faint headache began to set in.

I raised a hand to my forehead.

—Haa...

It was a strange sensation.

As though my brain had just spent hours studying without a single break.

[Cognitive load elevated.]

[Mental state: Stable.]

[Rest recommended.]

I took a deep breath.

Even with that slight heaviness in my head...

I smiled.

It was nothing serious.

In fact...

It wasn’t even close to the despair the previous George had experienced.

The young man who had occupied this body before me had spent three weeks trying to understand those volumes.

Three weeks of frustration.

And thanks to the biochip...

I had absorbed all of the introductory material in less than an hour.
