A Ghost Story Unfolds: The Cannon Fodder Went Mad by Burning Ghost Money

Chapter 13 Who Am I 12No wonder Wang Min always seemed a bit nervous; as soon as she was summoned, she was already subtly hinting that she needed underworld currency.

The reward for clearing a one-star instance is only a hundred underworld currency, a two-star instance is three hundred, and a three-star instance is 1,000. For an ordinary person to clear a three-star instance without any items, it would be considered a miracle of their ancestors’ making.

While Wang Min needed two hundred a month, this Patrick Star, who couldn’t tell front from back, required a staggering two thousand!

Ordinary people aren’t made of stone; they have to eat and pay rent too. There are also places in the instance where money is needed. It’s hard enough just to support themselves, so how could they possibly raise two gold-swallowing beasts like these?

Lin Xiangjun let out a sigh of lament.

It was just money, wasn’t it? She had plenty.

She pulled out one thousand one hundred from her black-gold card and, under Wang Min’s excited and surprised gaze, handed her a hundred.

It wasn’t that she was stingy; this was two weeks’ salary given all at once! Although she wasn’t short on money, there was no need to throw out tens of thousands at a time. Didn’t Wang Min say they could be damaged? If the paper figure broke after she gave the money, wouldn’t her money be wasted?

Even with a great family business, she couldn’t squander it like that.

”If you are damaged, how do I repair you?”

”Advanced paper figures only need to have underworld currency placed on the damaged area to repair automatically. Ordinary paper figures like us have to go to a specialized paper craft shop to buy a new body—that is, an unused paper figure.”

Lin Xiangjun looked thoughtful as she pulled the stack of paper figurine cards from her pouch. ”These are all unused paper figures. Can you use them?”

Wang Min’s originally lifeless, slanted eyes suddenly burst with endless bright light. She wanted to pounce forward in excitement but forced herself to hold back.

Her gaze fell on Lin Xiangjun, who was sitting cross-legged on the sofa. From the moment she saw the underworld currency, she knew this master was not simple. The weird world had only just descended, and someone who could take out such a thick stack of underworld currency at once definitely had an extraordinary identity.

However, although there was a lot of underworld currency, she had only received a hundred, so she wasn’t too surprised. She simply thought Lin Xiangjun had obtained them by chance and was just a lucky ordinary person.

But when that stack of paper figurine cards was revealed, Wang Min knew she was wrong.

paper figurine cards! So many paper figurine cards!

These were genuine high-value items that money couldn’t buy! She could feel that these paper figurine cards still carried the fresh energy from before the weirdness descended. If all these paper figures were released, she didn’t dare imagine how many powerful items Lin Xiangjun could obtain, and how much those items would help her navigate the instances like a fish in water!

She tried her best to keep her voice steady, but she was too excited, and her voice trembled uncontrollably.

”We can use them!”

These paper figurine cards were countless times better than those crudely made, ordinary, stiff bodies in the paper craft shops!

With such good ones available, she’d be crazy to go to a paper craft shop and use those crumbling, worthless bodies!

Lin Xiangjun could see Wang Min’s excitement and quickly understood why.

As expected, items burned for oneself before the apocalypse were indeed better than things from after the apocalypse. Just look at how excited this paper figure had become.

She nodded. Just then, Patrick Star came out carrying something. Under Wang Min’s fanatical and reluctant gaze, she casually tucked the paper figurine cards back into her pouch.

”Take a close look at the rules on this note, remember them, and then search the room for clues and suspicious things without violating the rules.” Lin Xiangjun handed the notebook to Wang Min, then took the slip of paper from Patrick Star’s hand.

The fanaticism in Wang Min’s heart hadn’t faded when a notebook was shoved into her hands.

Another item! And it was C-grade!

She grinned so wide her gums showed.

Good, good! She knew her kowtowing in the underworld hadn’t been for nothing! Now, she really had been reincarnated into a wealthy family!

She had to work hard and fulfill the master’s requirements. If the master was satisfied, there would surely be benefits for her. Otherwise, what if the master summoned another paper figure to replace her?

That thick stack of paper figurine cards could be her new body, but they could also be her competitors.

Thinking of this, Wang Min didn’t dare be careless. She pulled Patrick Star aside to look at the notebook.

On the other side, Lin Xiangjun had already opened the slip of paper.

The handwriting clearly belonged to a child, looking like someone who had just recently learned to write, with each stroke carefully forming a bunch of ugly characters.

Some difficult words on the slip were replaced with pinyin, but there wasn’t much pinyin. It seemed this child already knew quite a few characters and should be at least in the third or fourth grade.

”Today Dad wouldn’t let me eat candy. I had a fight with Dad and was scolded by Mom. Mom said children shouldn’t talk back to adults. I asked why, and Mom said children should listen to adults because children are afraid of adults.”

”I asked Mom, what are adults afraid of? Mom said adults aren’t afraid of anything.”

”Mom is a liar. I heard her when she was chatting with the auntie who lives on the sixth floor. She said ■■ is very scary, that ■■ isn’t like a normal child. The sixth-floor auntie and his mom both said they are afraid of ■■ and usually don’t dare to look into his eyes.”

”They are afraid of ■■, but I’m not afraid. He’s a very good friend. Every time he eats candy, he shares some with me. When I share the vegetables I don’t like with him, he very readily eats them for me. I like ■■ the most.”

”Children should be afraid of adults, so adults should also be afraid of children? Such a strange thing.”

From this slip of paper, it could be seen that ■■ was a child about the same age as her, liked eating candy, and wasn’t a picky eater.

The mention of liking candy immediately reminded Lin Xiangjun of the friend in the household rules.

[3. When you eat, remember to prepare a portion for the friend living in your house. You only need to put his food in a bowl, light two sticks of incense, and place the bowl at the door. He has a small appetite and doesn’t eat much.]

[5. Please do not eat too much candy, or you will get cavities. Your friend is the same.]

This ■■ was her ”friend,” and was related to a certain household on the sixth floor.

There were no players on the sixth floor, very likely because there were important clues there that were meant to be hidden from players.

She needed to find time to go to the sixth floor, Lin Xiangjun thought.

Coincidentally, Wang Min finished reading the notes and returned the notebook. Lin Xiangjun then tucked the slip of paper into the notebook as well.

Lin Xiangjun glanced at the time on her phone.

Six-ten.

The lights couldn’t be turned on until eight, but the sky outside the instance had already darkened. The entire room had become dim, making it a bit difficult to see the words on the paper.

Lin Xiangjun took out a Flashlight and placed it face-up on the coffee table in the living room.

The rules only said the house lights couldn’t be turned on, but this Flashlight she brought from outside clearly wasn’t included in that.

She didn’t know what time the parents would return. After thinking for a moment, Lin Xiangjun decided to check the kitchen first.

The rules told her to get food from the fridge if she was hungry, saying there was prepared food there. Adopting her role as a child, if the meal left for her before they went out hadn’t been touched all day, the parents would definitely interrogate her.
