Chapter 188: Chapter 188: Setting Off for Beldane Island

This was to stabilize the effects of the Ice Core.

She would let it fully merge with one Superpower before beginning the absorption for a second one.

And this time, Nina Jacobs decided to have her Wood Element Superpower absorb this particular Ice Core.

The absorption process for the Mystic Ice Core was fast.

Nina Jacobs finished absorbing it in just five minutes.

She took out a few Little Zombie Rats and tried to control them.

Her Control Power was indeed much stronger than before.

Even her Perception had improved.

”It can do this too?”

Nina Jacobs found it rather amusing. She could even control the Little Zombie Rats to change their size.

However, she didn’t dare to manipulate them recklessly.

The enlarged Little Zombie Rats didn’t look very friendly...

The shelter was safe enough.

Nina Jacobs slept dreamlessly until dawn.

”Nina, have you had breakfast?

Do you need any motion sickness medicine?”

「The next morning」 Ian Chandler was fully prepared.

They had to take a boat to get to Beldane Island.

”You’re always so thoughtful, Ian.”

Just in case, Sherry Renner took one of the motion sickness pills.

She had heard that the river along that route was incredibly foul-smelling.

”This is Captain Levi Stone, the sub-detachment leader of Rescue Team 4.”

Ian Chandler introduced Nina Jacobs and the others in turn.

Levi Stone wasn’t particularly tall, and he looked at the group with a hint of skepticism.

”All of you, make sure you stick close to us today.

If something happens, we won’t be held responsible.”

Levi Stone had actually been against it when he heard that some Superpower Users would be joining them at the last minute.

But he didn’t have the final say.

”Understood, Captain Stone.”

Nina Jacobs wasn’t bothered in the slightest.

After the introductions were over, she pulled Ian Chandler aside.

”Pack these up.”

Nina Jacobs said, pointing to the items in the back of the off-road vehicle.

”What are these?”

Ian Chandler looked and saw that they were several hovercrafts.

There were also some waterproof suits and oxygen masks.

”Better safe than sorry.”

After Nina Jacobs said that, Ian Chandler obediently packed them away.

”Actually, my mom and the others prepared some things for me too,

and the waterway isn’t that long.

We’ll have a helicopter escort the entire way there.”

Seeing that Nina Jacobs still seemed very worried, Ian Chandler tried to reassure her.

”Is that so? That’s good then.”

Nina Jacobs wasn’t so sure.

’Could Ian’s presence this time really change the outcome from my past life?’

But no matter what, she was fully prepared.

By the time they followed the well-equipped team to the riverbank,

Leo Hale was already desperate to put on the oxygen mask Nina Jacobs had given him.

”This is... just too foul,”

Leo Hale said.

He was starting to regret not taking the motion sickness medicine.

The river’s surface was covered with a massive amount of rotting fish carcasses, emitting waves of stench.

These were all fish that had died in the river during the acid rain period.

Fortunately, the ferry had been specially treated.

It looked very sturdy and had already been given an anti-acidification treatment.

”The whole trip is 30 minutes. Everyone, stay on your toes!”

Levi Stone said before they boarded.

There were only about 70 people on this mission.

The reason was that the zombies on Beldane Island had already been completely cleared out.

This mission was simply to use these two ferries to bring back the 400-plus people from the island.

”Let’s go.”

Ian Chandler was the first to board the boat.

Nina Jacobs followed right behind him.

”Why did my divination point to a near-certain death again...”

Sherry Renner was starting to have serious doubts about herself.

”That’s normal. Any dangerous place is going to give you slim odds of survival.”

Levi Stone happened to overhear Nina Jacobs’s words.

He shook his head, finding it harder and harder to understand why the higher-ups had allowed a few young people to tag along.

Except for that tall guy, Wayne Warner, the rest of them looked like they were just here for the ride.

”You haven’t been on many missions before, have you?”

Levi Stone said.

”No, we haven’t,”

Nina Jacobs replied.

Come to think of it, she was used to fighting solo with just Wayne Warner.

She could count the number of times she’d joined a formal mission on one hand.

”It seems like he’s looking down on us,”

Sherry Renner whispered.

”Drop the ’seems.’ He definitely is,”

Leo Hale replied.

Nina Jacobs observed the scene outside the boat.

There were two ferries heading to Beldane Island.

The other one was essentially empty.

The two vessels quickly started moving.

Countless rotten fish and shrimp carcasses floated on the black water, only to be crushed by the ferries.

The churning water made the vile stench even stronger.

No one looked pleased.

A helicopter hovered above the ferries.

It was supposedly there to scout ahead and carry out rapid rescues in case of an emergency.

”This stretch of water was already scanned with machines beforehand,

there are no signs of life down there.”

Ian Chandler said, noticing Sherry Renner staring worriedly at the water outside the window.

”That’s good, that’s good.”

Sherry Renner was indeed worried there was something beneath the black water.

Nina Jacobs had activated her Five Senses Enhancement as soon as she boarded.

Aside from the sound of the ferry, all she could hear was silence.

Gradually, the two boats drifted across the vast, black waters.

The scene reminded Leo Hale of an infinite escape game he used to play.

It was easy to get lost staring at the black surface of the water and recall unpleasant things.

”Try not to look outside,”

Nina Jacobs warned.

She checked the time. They still had another 20 minutes before reaching Beldane Island.

”Did you guys hear something?”

Sherry Renner asked just then.

She felt like there was some kind of cry coming from the vast black water.

’Was that sound... a dog barking?’

”How could there be a dog barking in the water?

You must have misheard.”

Leo Hale hadn’t heard a thing.

”But I really did...”

Sherry Renner stared out the window, and no one noticed that her pupils seemed to be losing focus.

A few moments later, a team member stood up.

”The restroom is in the back,”

someone reminded him.

The team member didn’t say a word and just walked toward the rear of the cabin.

Just as everyone assumed the team member was going to the restroom, Nina Jacobs sensed that something was wrong.

The entire cabin was terrifyingly quiet.

Her Five Senses Enhancement already made her hearing exceptionally sharp.

The team member had clearly walked out onto the deck.

”Captain Stone, something’s wrong with him.”

Nina Jacobs tapped Levi Stone, who was sitting in the row ahead.

However, Levi Stone didn’t react.

”This is weird. I’ll go check.”

Nina Jacobs stood up, and Ian Chandler followed her.

The stench on the deck outside the cabin was overpowering.

The black surface of the water was like a bottomless, inky abyss.

The team member was standing at the stern, staring down at the black water with a blank expression.

Just as he lifted his leg to jump into the dark water,

a Wood Element Vine shot out from behind and yanked him back just in time!

Ian Chandler broke out in a cold sweat.

This was his first time using a Wood Element Vine, and thankfully, he hadn’t made any mistakes.

Just now, he had realized that no matter how much he and Nina Jacobs shouted, it was useless, so he had prepared to pull the man back.

But even after being pulled back,

the team member still showed no reaction.

It was as if he were possessed.

”Why is this happening?”

Ian Chandler didn’t dare release the vine, afraid the man would try to jump again.

”Something’s wrong. You watch him here.

I’m going inside to check.”

Without stopping to explain, Nina Jacobs rushed back into the cabin.

She and Ian Chandler had just made a huge commotion, yet no one from the cabin had come out to help.

Now, as Nina Jacobs reached the entrance, she was stunned by the sight before her.

One after another, team members were standing in the aisle inside the cabin.

Their eyes were all vacant, as if they had been hypnotized, and they all seemed to be walking toward the deck.
