Chapter 174: Chapter 174: Trying My Luck

Chase Gallagher frowned upon hearing Zoe Morgan’s demand.

They all looked like students, so it was understandable that they couldn’t drive.

’Do I really have to find them a driver?’

”Just let her choose for herself.”

At that, Nina Jacobs spoke to Sheila Rhodes.

”My name is Nina Jacobs,

are you willing to come back to City D with us?”

It was their first time meeting, and they had only exchanged a few words.

Nina Jacobs was actually a little worried that Sheila Rhodes wouldn’t go with them.

After all, she never talked back when yelled at, nor did she fight back when hit.

She seemed far too submissive.

”Sheila Rhodes, you idiot,

they’re definitely just using you as cannon fodder.

Is there even anything to think about?

Haven’t you been doing just fine with us all this time?”

Zoe Morgan said quickly.

”That’s right, Sheila. Come back.

We promise we won’t be so hard on you anymore.”

The boys standing by her side also tried to persuade her.

Now they were starting to get genuinely panicked.

Sheila Rhodes was the only one in their group who knew how to drive.

Eric Stone, Kurt Garrison, and the others also noticed the situation.

However, they wisely chose not to get involved in Nina Jacobs’s affairs.

Seeing that no one was willing to step in and help them, Zoe Morgan decided to go forward and grab Sheila Rhodes herself.

But Sheila Rhodes dodged out of the way.

”I’ll go with you.

I’ll do whatever you ask.”

Without a moment’s hesitation, Sheila Rhodes grabbed the hem of Nina Jacobs’s shirt.

”Alright. We’ll take you back to the shelter in City D.”

Nina Jacobs smiled.

Sheila Rhodes nodded.

”I’d like to say a few words to my classmates.”

After getting Nina Jacobs’s approval, Sheila Rhodes walked over to the others.

”Sheila Rhodes, you’d better think this through.

If these people abandon you and you try to come back,

we won’t take you back!”

Zoe Morgan declared.

”I’m sorry, Classmate Morgan.”

Sheila Rhodes stepped forward and bowed to them.

”Y-You, what do you mean by this?”

Zoe Morgan couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about Sheila Rhodes.

”I don’t have a Superpower.

Without you, I wouldn’t have survived this long.

Thank you for getting me this far.”

Sheila Rhodes straightened up.

”But I won’t be going any further with you.”

From the very beginning, she had only one goal: survival.

Only by surviving could she be reunited with her family.

”You were using me?”

Zoe Morgan suddenly realized.

”Classmate Morgan, you were so good to me,

abandoning so many others, but never me.”

Sheila Rhodes said with a smile, the red imprint of a hand still on her cheek.

”What are you trying to say?”

Zoe Morgan asked, her eyes wide.

”It’s nothing. Don’t overthink it.

Some things are better left unknown.”

With that, Sheila Rhodes turned and walked away.

She left the others standing there, stunned.

”What about them...?”

Chase Gallagher was still unsure what to do with Zoe Morgan and her friends.

”We don’t need to worry about them,”

Nina Jacobs said. If they managed to survive in City J, they must have some skills of their own.

Besides, she wasn’t interested in whether they lived or died.

’But for an ordinary person like Sheila Rhodes to have survived this long... being obedient and submissive alone definitely wouldn’t have been enough.’

’She’s a smart one.’

[Host’s action has been detected to save one human in two days. Triggering ”Selfless Savior” title. Reward: one bottle of ”Healing Potion”.]

Hearing the system’s notification, Nina Jacobs understood.

In her past life, Sheila Rhodes must have died two days from now.

But in this life, she had been saved by her.

”Got it.”

Chase Gallagher glanced over at Zoe Morgan and the others.

Perhaps because he had just made a move against them, they no longer dared to approach.

”Do you need me to drive?”

That was the first thing Sheila Rhodes asked as soon as she got in the car.

”No, you can just relax for the ride.

If you need anything, just let us know.”

Nina Jacobs said.

She had overheard the conversation between Sheila Rhodes and the others.

Until she got a better sense of who Sheila was, she decided to be responsible only for her physical safety.

Sheila Rhodes seemed a little surprised, but she did as Nina said and took a seat to the side.

「On the road ahead.」

Zombies appeared from time to time.

However, the members of the Lockwood Squad took the lead and dealt with them all.

By evening, they decided to stop for the night in an abandoned factory.

”We’ve been driving all day and have barely made any progress.”

”Yeah, my old commute to work was longer than this.”

”Can’t be helped. The roads in City J are just rough. I hear once we get to City D, we’ll hardly have to clear any more roadblocks.”

”...”

The group chattered amongst themselves inside the abandoned factory.

Nina Jacobs and her group found a few vacant offices.

This ensured everyone could have their own room.

”Wayne Warner went to bed this early?”

Holden Shaw noticed that the door to Wayne Warner’s room was already closed.

It looked like he didn’t plan on coming out again.

”Yeah, he’s a bit tired.”

Nina Jacobs’s gaze flickered away for a moment.

In reality, Wayne Warner was currently in his room, stuffing his face.

After all, the food he’d eaten in the car during the day was barely enough to tide him over.

”Nina, I’ve already taken some food to Sheila Rhodes,

but can you guess what she asked me for?”

Yvonne Willow offered Nina Jacobs a pack of crackers.

”What did she ask for?”

Nina Jacobs politely refused the crackers. She remembered that Yvonne Willow didn’t have many supplies left.

’I’ll have to find an opportunity to replenish her supplies in the next day or two.’

”She asked for books. Textbooks, things like that.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any.”

Yvonne Willow shook her head. That request had really stumped her.

’It’s the apocalypse. Who reads books anymore?’

”I see. I’ll go check on her.”

Nina Jacobs knocked on the door to Sheila Rhodes’s room.

When Sheila Rhodes opened the door, her eyes were a little red.

She seemed a little surprised to see Nina Jacobs.

”Were you looking for this?”

Nina Jacobs happened to have quite a few books in her storage space, and she pulled out a volume of poetry.

”Thank you...

Why did you save me today?”

Sheila Rhodes looked at the poetry book as if it were a priceless treasure.

But she still had to ask her question.

”A friend of mine mentioned that your grandfather is Warren Rhodes,

and that he’s looking for his granddaughter, Sheila Rhodes.”

Nina Jacobs stated the reason plainly, without hiding anything.

Sheila Rhodes fell silent upon hearing Nina Jacobs’s explanation.

”I just had a dream. I dreamt that they pushed me out of the car,

and I was eaten by zombies.”

So that was the reason Sheila Rhodes wanted a book to read—because of that nightmare.

She felt the dream was so vivid, as if it was something that was supposed to have happened.

Even the pain felt real.

That was why she wanted to read a book, to calm her nerves.

Whenever she had felt overwhelmed by everything that had happened recently, she had relied on a literature textbook to calm herself.

”Zoe Morgan also mentioned her family connections,

but you didn’t save her.”

Sheila Rhodes had a feeling that Nina Jacobs hadn’t saved her just because of what Chase Gallagher had said.

”Then just think of it as fate,”

Nina Jacobs said.

”Fate decreed that I would save you,

and it decreed that you still have things you need to do. Don’t overthink it.”

”Fate...?”

Sheila Rhodes stared at the book of poetry in her hands, lost in thought.

She didn’t even notice when Nina Jacobs left.

Nina Jacobs decided that as soon as they reached the City D shelter, she would find a way to contact Warren Rhodes.

That way, she could reunite Warren Rhodes with his granddaughter sooner.

She believed Justin Lawson and Samson Thorne would take the matter seriously.

But for now, Nina Jacobs checked the time.

Near the abandoned factory was a ”free-for-all” supply location.

Mission difficulty: Four Stars.

She planned to wait until late at night to go and try her luck.
