Chapter 151: Chapter 151: Making Inquiries

Nina Jacobs and Wayne Warner were led into the abandoned hotel.

”Thatcher, she...

Can I be the one to... take her?”

She heard Holden Shaw asking Jonathan Thatcher for permission in a low voice not far away.

”You?

You’ve finally come to your senses, kid?”

Jonathan Thatcher glanced at Nina Jacobs.

His eyes revealed a hint of regret.

This girl was indeed a looker; he had planned on keeping her for himself tonight as a reward.

”Seeing as you’ve been so diligent and responsible these past few days,

I’ll let you have her for tonight,

but I’m taking her back when you’re done playing.”

Jonathan Thatcher chuckled sleazily.

”Thanks, Thatcher.”

A flicker of barely perceptible disgust crossed Holden Shaw’s eyes as he turned and walked toward Nina Jacobs.

”I’ll take you to where you’ll be staying.”

By now, Holden Shaw’s expression had returned to normal.

Nina Jacobs looked at him but ultimately said nothing, simply following along.

She had heard every word of their conversation just now.

’I just hadn’t expected this kid, Shaw, to be so devious.’

’Oh well. I had already planned to leave this place after finding out about the Ice Element Zombie anyway.’

Judging from the situation on the way here,

Nina Jacobs felt this place wasn’t safe.

Coupled with how hastily Finn Hart and his group had left, she felt more and more that something was wrong here.

Holden Shaw led Nina Jacobs to a room on the second floor of the hotel.

Seeing Holden Shaw about to close the door,

Wayne Warner immediately blocked it.

”Wait for me outside the door,”

Nina Jacobs said to Wayne Warner.

Wayne Warner nodded. The moment the door closed, Holden Shaw began to explain himself impatiently.

”Don’t worry, I won’t do anything to you.

This is my room.

With me looking after you, no one will dare lay a hand on you.”

”Lay a hand on me?”

Nina Jacobs asked.

Holden Shaw nodded.

”You don’t know what kind of person Jonathan Thatcher is. As long as a woman comes here,

no matter how young, he will...

Even though you’re a Superpower User, you’re no exception.

That’s why I brought you here...”

”So you’re not like him?”

Nina Jacobs looked at the blushing Holden Shaw, wondering why his face was so red.

”Of course not!

If you stay here, I’ll protect you.

I’ll never let anyone make you do anything you don’t want to do!”

Holden Shaw seemed to have summoned a great deal of courage to say this.

”Then that makes things simple.”

Nina Jacobs sat down.

’Looks like I won’t have to use force after all.’

”Simple?”

Holden Shaw didn’t understand why Nina Jacobs said that.

”I’m here looking for a mutated Ice Element Zombie.

Have you seen one?”

She asked him point-blank.

”An Ice Element... mutated zombie?”

Holden Shaw took a moment to process this.

Then he nodded frantically.

”I’ve seen one! The kind that can shoot out chunks of ice!”

”That’s the one. Can you tell me where you saw it?”

”Let me think...”

Holden Shaw recalled for a moment, then said with great certainty:

”Just at the foot of the mountain!

At the foot of Rexton Mountain.”

He and a few other Speed Element Superpower Users in the team had the daily task of luring zombies.

Besides luring zombies away when the team was out scavenging for supplies,

they also had to lead away any zombies that appeared around the camp every day.

This was to prevent zombies from attacking the camp.

He had encountered that type of zombie on the road to Rexton Mountain that day.

As he spoke, he quickly grabbed his nearby backpack and pulled something out.

”I was curious, so I killed it,

but what I found in its head was a Water Element Crystal Core.

I thought it was strange.”

Holden Shaw had mentioned this to others after he got back,

but no one believed him.

’At the foot of Rexton Mountain...’

’It seems my previous plan to go to Rexton Mountain was correct.’

Rexton Mountain was the highest point in City J.

In her past life, she had heard that Mystic Ice Cores mostly dropped in high-altitude areas.

Holden Shaw’s words confirmed her suspicions.

”Why are you looking for it?”

he asked, confused.

”Just curious.

By the way, what’s the deal with those women they mentioned are being kept here?”

Nina Jacobs asked.

The moment she arrived at the camp, she had activated her ”Five Senses Enhancement.”

While waiting outside, she had heard the voices of some women.

’Those women must be imprisoned here.’

But she also heard a name.

Pascal Paige.

The Pascal Paige she knew in her past life was an outstanding Healer.

She was also Renee Strong’s arch-nemesis.

Nina Jacobs had no beef with Pascal Paige.

She even remembered that in a healing competition held at the base, Pascal Paige had come very close to defeating Renee Strong.

Everyone at the time thought it was a pity, because Pascal Paige only had one arm.

She’d heard the other arm had been lost while she was fleeing for her life...

’That name isn’t very common.’

Yet she had heard that very name among the women’s voices.

At this, Holden Shaw fell silent for a moment after hearing Nina Jacobs’ question.

He sighed and answered:

”Like I just said, Jonathan Thatcher is a complete bastard.

He locks up women who have no Superpowers or who defy him,

and uses them as... as rewards.”

”How many are there?”

Nina Jacobs asked.

Things like this weren’t uncommon in the apocalypse.

”More than ten, I guess...

There used to be more, but most of the ones without Superpowers are dead now.”

Holden Shaw sounded dejected as he spoke of this.

One of the reasons the others in the team treated him like an outcast was that he refused to accept these ”rewards.”

That’s why Jonathan Thatcher had agreed when he offered to take Nina Jacobs back to his room.

Because he didn’t want any ”rewards,” Jonathan Thatcher was always worried he would leave the team.

”I see. Thank you.”

Nina Jacobs stood up.

’Now that I have the answers I want, there’s no need for me to stay here any longer.’

”Where are you going?”

Seeing Nina Jacobs walk toward the door, Holden Shaw stood up in surprise.

”I’m just stepping out for a bit.”

Nina Jacobs knew she had to leave this place tonight.

’I have to leave this place tonight.’

Otherwise, once morning came, it would be much harder to get away.

Holden Shaw stared blankly at the now-closed door.

But outside, Nina Jacobs had already taken Wayne Warner and was long gone...

Following the sounds she heard with her ”Five Senses Enhancement,” Nina Jacobs arrived at the end of the first-floor hallway.

The mirror at the end was covered in a thick layer of dust.

The old wooden floorboards gave off a sour, rancid smell in the high heat.

Perhaps because it was still dinnertime, there was no one else in the hallway.

Inside the room.

A woman with pink-dyed hair was trying to persuade the others in the room.

”Eat. How are you going to survive if you don’t eat?”

”Pascal Paige, don’t treat my injuries this time.”

a long-haired woman squatting on the ground said, staring at the filthy floor.

Her expression was distant, as if she had already grown accustomed to her current situation.

”Fine, don’t get treated then.

I guess no good deed goes unpunished.”

Although she said this, there wasn’t the slightest hint of anger in Pascal Paige’s voice.

”I heard that guy surnamed Zhang is coming again tonight.

He’s the one who killed Winona Lynn last time...”

Another woman broke a cracker and soaked it in a thin, watery gruel, her hand trembling nonstop.

The room fell silent.

Just as Pascal Paige was about to say something, there was a knock on the door.

In an instant, the eyes of the women in the room filled with despair.

Pascal Paige muttered a foul curse.

But in the end, she still opened the door.

However, what appeared outside the door was a cold, clean face.

”You...”

Before she could react, the woman from outside pulled the man behind her and quickly slipped inside.

Then she shut the door tightly behind them.
