The Frail Guide Who Devoured an Entire Pollution Zone

Chapter 149: Chapter 149: You Can Consider My Son

Shen Yan stared intently at the data on the screen, raising a hand to signal for the staff member to continue.

”According to our previous assessment, the contamination source affects different infected subjects in different ways, leading to various types of differentiation.”

”Test Subject 173, which went berserk today, has been identified as a Spiritual Mutation. Furthermore, the drug’s efficacy shows that the stronger a spirit body’s Spiritual Power, the more intense its reaction is to the injection.”

”Today’s Mutant 173 had the most intense reaction we’ve seen so far. You, of all people, can attest to that.”

Shen Yan nodded thoughtfully. ”Today’s experiment gives us one hundred percent confirmation of our previous hypothesis. And if the contamination source’s effect on a Mutant’s host determines its differentiation, then wouldn’t the same apply to the differentiation of Sentinels and guides?”

”Sir, what do you mean?” The staff member looked at Shen Yan, puzzled, his gaze filled with inquiry.

Shen Yan mused for a moment before speaking. ”Different people are affected, which triggers their awakening as Sentinels or guides.”

”And it’s already been confirmed that within these two major categories, the resulting level differs based on the individual.”

”But what I’m wondering is whether the transformation process itself might have other variations depending on the individual.”

The staff member looked surprised for a moment, then his eyes lit up. The desire for discovery was written all over his face.

Shen Yan’s expression shifted, and the image of Xu Qingsui suddenly surfaced in his mind.

He didn’t know why he thought of Xu Qingsui at that moment, but his sixth sense was sharp. A voice told him that Xu Qingsui was likely the very subject he was looking for.

「Meanwhile, in Xu Qingsui’s dorm room」

Zhang Yuqing entered but didn’t state her purpose. Instead, she began looking around Xu Qingsui’s room.

’What on earth does she want?’ Xu Qingsui felt conflicted.

But the woman remained silent, pushing Xu Qingsui to her limit. Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore.

”Mrs. Shen, I just moved in. All the furnishings were already here, so there’s not much to see. Besides, I’m sure you didn’t come all this way just for a tour, did you?”

Zhang Yuqing was completely unfazed by Xu Qingsui’s interruption.

She sat down with a pleasant smile, taking charge as if she were the host. ”Why don’t we sit and have a nice chat?”

Xu Qingsui didn’t mind. She sat down and fixed her gaze on the woman, waiting for her to speak.

”There’s no need to be nervous. I mainly just wanted to meet you. After all, you’re the first person to get caught up in a romantic scandal with my son so soon after meeting him.”

Xu Qingsui remained silent, mulling over Zhang Yuqing’s words. ’I wonder what the chances are that she’s here to offer me money to go away.’

”I’m not just bragging about my son, but he takes relationships very seriously. He has the means to live a life of debauchery, with a woman on each arm, but he has never once fooled around.”

Xu Qingsui looked puzzled. ’What is she trying to say? Is she not here to tell me to break up with him? Is she trying to get us together instead?’

”As for the matter with him and Xiao Xiao, that started as a joke among us adults. Of course, our families are well-matched, so if they were genuinely interested, we wouldn’t have minded a powerful alliance.”

”But Shen Yan truly never saw her that way, and Xiao Xiao is a bit too persistent. So they’ve been stuck in this game of cat and mouse.”

”But now, with your appearance, Shen Yan has finally made up his mind. He’s even dragged us adults into it just to put an end to the whole affair.”

After all that, Xu Qingsui still couldn’t figure out what Zhang Yuqing was getting at.

But she felt there was one thing she needed to make crystal clear.

”Mrs. Shen, given who you are, I think it’s important you know this: you’ve misunderstood the relationship between your son and me. What he told Liang Xiaoxiao today... he was just using me as a shield.”

”So whether you came here to break us up or for some other reason, you don’t need to worry. Based on that fact, things aren’t what you think they are.”

Now it was Zhang Yuqing’s turn to be surprised. ”Is that so? After you’ve explained so much, I’m actually at a loss for words.”

Zhang Yuqing thought for a moment before continuing, ”I don’t like to meddle in Shen Yan’s love life. He has the right to make his own choices.”

”However, as his mother, I do want to get to know the woman he likes. That’s why I came today, simply to chat with you.”

”But if that’s the case, then I suppose there’s not much left for me to say.”

Xu Qingsui smiled, getting ready to show her guest out.

’Thank goodness reality isn’t as melodramatic as a novel. Shen Yan’s mother is actually quite reasonable; she didn’t just cling to the issue.’

Just as she said this, Zhang Yuqing stood up and walked to the door. Xu Qingsui was just starting to think she could finally get some rest...

...when Zhang Yuqing suddenly tossed a comment over her shoulder. ”Regardless of your relationship with Shen Yan, after talking with you, I find you very interesting. I think you’d be a great match for my Shen Yan. Perhaps you should give it some thought! Making the act real wouldn’t be a bad idea.”

Xu Qingsui stumbled, nearly falling to the floor.

Xu Qingsui gave an awkward laugh. ”Mrs. Shen, thank you for your kind words, but I’m a big believer in fate. Matters of the heart are best left to destiny. For now, it seems your son and I are not fated to be.”

”No matter. Meeting itself is a kind of fate. I believe it won’t be long before you feel that destiny has arrived.”

”I’m sorry for intruding today. Another time, I’ll have Shen Yan bring you to the family estate. We can have a proper chat then. I like you a great deal, and I’m sure we’ll get along wonderfully.”

Xu Qingsui was utterly flabbergasted. She had no idea what to say, so she could only offer an awkward smile and watch Zhang Yuqing leave.

The moment the woman was gone, Xu Qingsui shut the door, leaned back against it, and gasped for air.

’That Mrs. Shen... she really knows how to drive a conversation. To the point where I didn’t even know how to respond.’

Not daring to dwell on it, she quickly tried to clear her head of the recent memory, washed up, and prepared to take a nap.

After Zhang Yuqing walked out of the dormitory, the smile vanished from her face. She glanced back at the building, her expression inscrutable.

A moment later, a car pulled up in front of her. The driver hurried out to open the door, respectfully ushering her inside.

”This Xu Qingsui is very interesting. Arrange to have her complete file on my desk as soon as possible.”

”The file must be detailed. I want her family background, her power level, and her entire relationship history. Leave nothing out.”

Lying on her bed, Xu Qingsui let out a few sneezes for no reason. She rubbed her nose. ’Someone must be talking trash about me.’
