My Werewolf System

Chapter 1779  Bare Handed

Xin was absolutely right about the terrifying situation. The whole city of Slough felt exactly like it was under a coordinated attack once again.

It wasn’t quite on the same apocalyptic scale of when the Phoenix gang had brutally entered Slough—it lacked that specific level of explosive, fiery destruction. Instead, it was a sudden, localized wave of pure, primal horror as particular, bloody reports began to rapidly circulate from every corner of the city.

On the famously busy Burnham Food Street, ordinary people were happily going about their day. Crowds were coming in and out of the vibrant shops, the smell of street food filling the air. That peace lasted until a dark creature was suddenly seen leaping down from the high rooftop of one of the towering restaurants, landing with bone-crushing force right on top of an unsuspecting civilian.

It was broad daylight, and the beast simply didn’t care. Before anyone could even process what was happening, the monster ripped violently into the person’s throat, blood spraying across the pavement. Deafening, terrified screams were heard echoing down the block as people frantically rushed into the nearest restaurants, desperately slamming doors and pulling down metal security shutters for protection.

Chaos erupted. More and more heavily mutated Werewolves were seen dropping down from the surrounding rooftops like rain. They were mindlessly slashing, biting, and tearing apart absolutely anyone that was unfortunate enough to be standing in front of them.

Burnham Food Street was actually slightly lucky in a grim way, as there was already a relatively high, established presence of armed Howler members actively patrolling the lucrative area.

These were hardened members that had bravely survived the initial attack with Lupus. They were heavily armed with scavenged Anti-Altered equipment, and some of them were even secretly initiated Werewolves or powerful Altereds themselves. They immediately drew their weapons and formed a defensive line, clashing violently with the monsters to buy the civilians time.

However, not everywhere in the city was so incredibly lucky.

Frantic reports flooded the emergency channels. The mutated Werewolves were reported to be violently breaking into towering corporate office buildings, shattering the glass lobbies and trapping the terrified office workers inside with absolutely little room to escape.

The monsters were suddenly appearing from the dense tree lines of the public parks, slaughtering joggers. They were even appearing in the grand lobbies of high-end hotels, turning marble floors red.

The Howlers, immediately after hearing Xin’s desperate voice report over the encrypted comms, were instantly on high guard. They mobilized every available unit and were trying their absolute best to frantically get to every single bloody situation they could.

But the major, tactical issue was that even when the dispatch teams finally got there, it wasn’t as if the regular, human members of the Howlers could easily deal with these incredibly powerful, mutated Werewolves. Anti Altered equipment and batons did nothing against their thick hide.

These corrupted beasts weren’t just physically stronger and far more agile than standard Altereds, but they were swarming in quite large, overwhelming numbers. While the Howlers were brave, they currently werenʼt in organized, standing shoulder-to-shoulder and ready to just fight a pitched battle ahead like they had done against Lupusʼs initial vanguard. They were scattered and reacting to ambushes.

In one quiet, residential neighborhood of Slough, an area that was composed mostly of small family houses and green lawns, a young man had just come out from the local convenience store on the corner of the street. He was casually carrying two heavy plastic bags of groceries along with him.

He turned the corner and headed down the quiet sidewalk, peacefully making his way back to his house. That was until he suddenly heard the horrific sounds of slaughter.

“ARGHH! Help! Somebody, please help me!” voices could be heard screaming in absolute, bloody terror from the end of the block.

“What the hell is going on?” Blake wondered, dropping his grocery bags on the pavement as his instincts flared.

As he sprinted forward and looked down the street, he could clearly see several terrified people running frantically from the far corner of the intersection. In the panic, a woman tripped over the curb, falling hard onto the concrete.

Right after she hit the ground, a furred creature pounced aggressively from the roof of a parked car right on top of her, instantly starting to violently bite away at her unprotected body.

“Hey! Donʼt look back! We can’t do absolutely anything to save her! We have to keep running if we want to live!” some of the fleeing men yelled in pure cowardice as they blindly continued to charge ahead, leaving her behind.

Once the mutated Werewolf was done with its horrific meal, it slowly rose, its muzzle dripping with fresh blood. It quickly looked up, locking its glowing yellow eyes onto the large group of people that were frantically running away down the street.

And that’s exactly when a young teenage boy, scrambling to keep up with the adults, tripped over his own shoelaces and fell heavily over the asphalt, scraping his knees and crying his eyes out in pure terror.

“Wait!!! Please, wait for me!” the young boy shouted, reaching out his hand.

But absolutely no one had paid him any attention. Even the group he was with—some of his own supposed friends—had selfishly continued to run regardless, prioritizing their own survival over his life.

The snarling Werewolf instantly locked onto the easy, isolated prey. It dropped to all fours and rapidly ran towards the crying kid.

The beast closed the distance in seconds, opening its jaws wide... until a , heavy metal trash can suddenly came flying horizontally through the air, violently hitting the side of the charging Werewolfʼs head with a loud CLANG.

The physical impact of the heavy metal did next to nothing to actually hurt the beast, as the Werewolf’s body didn’t even move an inch from the strike. But the sudden distraction worked perfectly. It stopped its charge, slowly turned its heavy head, and was now looking directly at the person who had thrown the heavy trash can.

“Get up and get the hell out of here, kid,” Blake commanded, his voice deadly calm as he stepped out into the middle of the street, rolling his shoulders. “Quickly! Run!”

The young boy scrambled to his feet and sprinted away, leaving Blake standing alone.

The mutated Werewolf was now solely staring at Blake, loudly snarling at him, saliva dripping from its fangs. While Blake was outwardly projecting confidence to save the kid, internally, he was being incredibly cautious. He took slow, measured steps backward, keeping his eyes locked entirely on the monsterʼs center of mass.

Without warning, the Werewolf violently leapt forward. It closed the distance instantly and took a , sweeping swipe at Blake with its razor-sharp claws.

Blake reacted blindingly fast. Relying purely on muscle memory, he dropped his center of gravity, perfectly ducking underneath the beastʼs sweeping arms.

The lethal attacks narrowly missed his head by mere inches, the wind of the swipe ruffling his hair. Everything was incredibly tight. Seeing a microsecond of opportunity as the beastʼs momentum carried it forward, Blake aggressively moved in close.

With absolutely all of the physical strength he could muster up, vividly remembering his brutal, hand-to-hand combat training from his days as a lethal Altered Hunter, he twisted his hips and threw a devastating, heavy right hook directly into the Werewolf’s exposed chest.

THUD!

The perfectly placed strike actually got a genuine physical reaction out of the dense Werewolf as it audibly grunted and slightly flinched backward from the heavy impact. But the beast recovered almost instantly. Blake quickly needed to athletically roll completely out of the way to avoid a lethal counter-strike, as the monster was already blindly kicking out with its legs.

Blake popped back up into a defensive stance, his knuckles throbbing with pain from hitting the beastʼs iron-like ribs.

‘Damn it, this is going to be incredibly hard,’ Blake thought to himself, wiping sweat from his brow as the monster circled him. ‘Without my specialized Altered Hunter gear, or my heavy weapons... taking this thing down barehanded is going to be a really, really tough fight.’
