Chapter 288: Chapter 111: Escape Plan!

Vulgar!

Hua Yun grumbled inwardly.

Meanwhile, Chen Wen was contemplating the intelligence brought by the Golden Eagle and Snowy Owl over the past few days.

He was roughly certain that the treasure was in the lake.

The show’s crew and mercenaries had been agitated on the ice surface of the lake these days.

And conducting surveys through some means.

To be honest, Chen Wen was far more interested in refined gold than in the mine itself.

If only he could carry away a hundred pounds of refined gold!

That would be more than enough to build homes for the animals.

But unfortunately, for the time being, Chen Wen had no right to compete for the treasure.

After sighing, Chen Wen sat up.

”Is the meal ready?”

”It’s been ready for a while.”

”I see those mercenaries are coming, time to get to work.”

...

Outside.

Compared to the brief peace in the camp, outside was a real mess.

Especially Hua Yun and Chen Wen’s assistants, who had already contacted home and applied pressure through the association.

At the same time, they planned to alert the authorities.

But the process of alerting the authorities was not smooth.

Belmont personally stepped in to persuade Lin Jiawei and Luo Yao not to call the police.

Even now, he still didn’t want the treasure to be made public.

But Lin Jiawei didn’t care about that; he just wanted to know about Chen Wen’s situation.

Therefore, Lin Jiawei went directly to the local police station to file a report.

But what the police told him was shocking.

They said they also had no way to enter the Yukon Territory at the moment.

The blizzard there had almost cut it off from the outside world, and even the small towns over there were difficult to get out of right now.

In frustration, Lin Jiawei chose to seek help from the embassy.

But the embassy was also helpless; the extreme weather in the Yukon was turning away all outsiders.

Even if a helicopter went in now, it might get lost or crash.

No one would dare to take that risk.

In the end, knowing that Lin Jiawei had leaked the information, Belmont came over to him.

He repeatedly guaranteed that he would ensure the safety of Chen Wen and the others, and earnestly begged Lin Jiawei not to blow things up any further.

Although Lin Jiawei was displeased, seeing Belmont diligently organizing a team of sled dogs and a rescue team, planning to proceed with the search and rescue amidst the blizzard,

he still acknowledged Belmont.

This wealthy businessman wasn’t so bad after all.

As for Pat, he had roughly guessed the reason for the loss of communication.

But there was nothing he could do now.

All Pat could do now was pray that the mercenaries would have a change of heart.

As for Jenny and the others’ life-or-death situation, he had long forgotten.

...

The mercenaries’ side.

”The signal supposedly is in this area, but why can’t we find it?”

The staff was getting anxious too.

If they didn’t find the treasure soon in this lousy weather, they wouldn’t be able to hold on.

The mercenary captain was even more anxious.

Yesterday, the people he arranged in the second town had relayed messages saying that someone was organizing a rescue team to come over for a search and rescue.

They didn’t have much time left.

”Keep looking! If it really doesn’t work...”

The mercenary captain’s expression hardened: ”Send someone down to look!”

The people around him shivered when they heard this.

In this kind of weather, even with protective gear, it wouldn’t be bearable!

Moreover, they didn’t even have any protective gear now, as they hadn’t anticipated needing someone to dive before coming here.

”No, doing this will make them nervous and possibly lead to rebellion, because nobody wants to die.”

The middle-aged white man stopped the black captain from continuing.

He was still keeping his wits about him.

After a short pause, he said, ”How about trying to clear the silt in the lake with a detector? There’s a lot of accumulated soil here; could it have been buried?”

The show’s crew side.

After pondering for a while, the staff said, ”We can try, but it might take a long time.”

”It’s better than doing nothing!”

The black captain shouted irritably: ”Get to it! Why are you standing around!”

The staff left with their heads down, fearing to provoke the seemingly irritable gorilla-like captain.

The black captain’s temper hadn’t eased yet.

After thinking for a bit, he asked, ”How about the survivors? Are they behaving?”

The mercenary nearby nodded, ”They are behaving. These days, our food has gotten much better thanks to the new guy.”

Hearing this, the black captain snorted: ”Smart of them!”

”Make sure someone keeps an eye on them. They’re the ones I trust the least!”

”Understood!”

...

Another three days passed.

Chen Wen could feel things were about to come to an end.

He was quite certain that the mercenaries were about to find the treasure.

In recent days, the mercenaries had been constantly dredging silt from the lakebed.

This was information given to Chen Wen by the Golden Eagle.

And the Snowy Owl told Chen Wen that the mercenary captain’s mood had shifted from irritable to calm in recent days, he could even be seen singing and dancing alone in his tent.

With all this information, Chen Wen felt the opportunity was right.

As the saying goes, ”fools don’t make money.”

Even if he couldn’t take all the treasure, he still had the idea of pocketing a hundred pounds of gold.

How does the saying go?

The bold feast, the timid starve.

Chen Wen decided to give it a shot.

In this wilderness, even in the worst-case scenario, it would just mean not getting the treasure.

His personal safety was entirely secure.

The first step in the plan is escaping.

From Chen Wen’s observations.

Lately, the guards had also relaxed their surveillance on them.

The keys were casually left around and easy to grab.

This was all thanks to Chen Wen’s positive attitude and compliance with the mercenaries’ demands.

This made the mercenaries trust this young man who could cook.

So, Chen Wen planned to make his escape tonight.

He had made arrangements ahead of time and informed the animals.

...

Around two in the early morning.

Chen Wen squinted and observed the surrounding situation.

Hank and Ludwig were in a deep sleep, exhausted from handling food supplies during the day.

Yang Feng was a lighter sleeper, but regular noise wouldn’t wake him.

The four mercenaries outside had drunk some alcohol.

In such a place, alcohol wasn’t a beverage but a magic potion for warmth.

Seeing Chen Wen and the others behaving so well,

three days ago, the mercenaries started drinking a little every night to keep warm.

While alcohol brought warmth to their bodies, its side effect was lulling the mercenaries into slumber.

Faced with this scenario, Chen Wen could only think of one phrase to describe the situation: A heaven-sent opportunity.

With a small bone piece he had hidden during dinner, he lightly tapped the stone floor.

The sound was so faint; even though Yang Feng was close, he couldn’t hear it.

Not to mention the mercenaries.

But to the lynx’s ears, this sound was crystal clear.

It and the Golden Eagle slowly emerged from the shadows, while the Snowy Owl stood guard in the tunnel behind them.

Soon, the lynx and the Golden Eagle arrived.

The lynx nimbly slipped into the cell to meet Chen Wen.

And with Chen Wen’s training and directives, the Golden Eagle began the key-theft operation.

”Remember, grab the base of the key, steady, and make no noise, just like before.”

Over the past few nights, Chen Wen had been training the Golden Eagle to steal the keys.

The success rate was high.

The Golden Eagle nodded and began its mission.

Raptor king the Golden Eagle now moved like a strutting rooster.

It stretched its wings, maintaining balance.

Its legs lifted high, stepping over the mercenaries’ bodies.

When passing the mercenaries’ sleeping bags, the Golden Eagle carefully retracted its wings, ensuring it didn’t touch them at all.

Everything was going as it had been trained.

But just as the Golden Eagle reached the keys, one of the mercenaries suddenly sneezed.

The Golden Eagle immediately clamped its wings tight and crouched under the shadow of an oil barrel.

The mercenary squinted, rubbing his nose.

Seeing nothing was amiss, he closed his eyes and went back to sleep.
