50 Chapter 50: The First Lesson 2026-10-27

The classroom lights went out.

For several seconds, there was nothing but darkness.

Then a single candle appeared on the teacher’s desk.

Its flame was pale blue.

The room around Ethan Vale slowly changed.

The blackboard became covered with ancient symbols. The wooden desks shifted into rows of dark stone. The windows disappeared, replaced by tall arches overlooking a sky filled with red clouds.

The classroom was no longer part of the hidden academy.

It had become a memory.

Ethan recognized the room.

The Hall of Origins.

A thousand years ago, this had been the first classroom he had ever built for his most gifted students.

Caelan Rook had studied here.

Veyron had taught here.

Ethan himself had spent decades standing before the blackboard, explaining the laws behind magic to students who would later become generals, rulers, and Saints.

The masked figure stood at the front of the room.

Veyron.

Or the memory of him.

He wore the black uniform of Ethan’s old academy, with a silver emblem pinned over his heart. His face was hidden behind a cracked mask, but his voice remained familiar.

”Sit.”

Noah Blake looked at the stone desks.

”I prefer standing.”

The masked teacher turned toward him.

”You were not part of the original memory.”

”No one asked me if I wanted to be part of it.”

”Then remain silent.”

Noah looked at Ethan.

”He is rude.”

”He was always rude.”

The masked figure turned toward Ethan.

”Was I?”

”You were worse.”

”Then perhaps the memory is accurate.”

Professor Aurelia Voss moved toward the nearest wall and studied the ancient symbols.

”These are not illusions.”

”No,” Ethan said. ”They are recorded events.”

”Recorded by whom?”

”The academy.”

The teacher lifted one hand.

The blackboard filled with a diagram.

It showed the world as Ethan remembered it during the final years of his reign. Seven major kingdoms surrounded a black circle.

The First Door.

The circle was connected to nine smaller symbols.

The fragments.

One of them was the Crown.

One was the Witness.

The third represented Knowledge.

The other six were hidden beneath black marks.

The room became quiet.

Veyron spoke.

”The world believed that the Final War began because Azeroth Veyr wanted to conquer the continent.”

A scene appeared above the blackboard.

Armies marched beneath black banners.

Cities burned.

Azeroth stood on a fortress wall, looking over a battlefield.

The memory showed him as he had been at the height of his power.

His black coat moved in the wind. His crown floated above his head, formed from dark metal and violet light.

The students in the memory knelt before him.

Ethan watched his former self.

He remembered the scene.

He remembered the confidence.

He remembered believing that the world was finally close to becoming orderly.

Then the memory changed.

The armies did not march toward another kingdom.

They marched toward a massive circular structure beneath the earth.

A black door stood at its center.

The First Door.

Noah’s expression changed.

”So you were not invading them.”

”No,” Ethan said.

”You were attacking the Door.”

”I was trying to reach it before someone else did.”

”Who?”

The masked teacher answered.

”Every kingdom that feared him.”

A second scene appeared.

The leaders of the seven major kingdoms gathered inside a golden hall.

Seraphina stood among them.

She was younger, but her golden eyes were unmistakable.

The leader of the northern kingdom placed a map on the table.

”Azeroth is gathering the fragments,” he said. ”If he succeeds, he will open the First Door.”

Another ruler shook his head.

”If he wanted to open it, why would he attack the Door’s location?”

”To deceive us.”

Seraphina remained silent.

A third ruler looked toward her.

”You have studied his methods. Is he capable of deception on that scale?”

Seraphina’s younger self stared at the map.

”Yes.”

The scene faded.

Ethan looked at her.

”You believed them.”

Seraphina did not answer.

The memory continued.

Azeroth stood inside the underground chamber before the First Door.

Veyron was beside him.

Evelyn stood on the opposite side, her hands covered in blood.

Nine fragments floated around the Door.

Azeroth’s voice echoed through the memory.

”The seal is failing.”

Veyron looked toward the black Door.

”Then we should open it.”

Evelyn turned sharply.

”No.”

Veyron’s expression remained calm.

”We cannot keep the Door closed forever.”

”We can repair the seal.”

”Not without the Crown.”

Azeroth raised one hand.

The Crown Fragment appeared above his palm.

Veyron’s eyes moved toward it.

Ethan noticed.

The look was subtle.

Desire.

Not for power.

For recognition.

Veyron had always wanted the Crown.

Not because he wanted to rule.

Because he believed he deserved to inherit it.

Ethan remembered that now.

Veyron had been his most loyal student.

He had obeyed every order, mastered every discipline, and never questioned Ethan in public.

But privately, he had believed that he understood the world better than his master.

The memory continued.

Azeroth placed the Crown Fragment into the seal.

The Door shook.

The darkness beyond it moved.

Evelyn looked at him.

”Your soul is already damaged. If you use the Crown as an anchor, the seal will consume you.”

”I know.”

”You will not survive.”

”I do not need to survive.”

Veyron stepped forward.

”You promised that I would inherit your authority.”

Azeroth turned toward him.

”When the Door is sealed.”

”You said I was ready.”

”You are not.”

Veyron’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But Ethan remembered that look.

It was the moment loyalty became resentment.

The memory broke apart.

The classroom filled with darkness.

Then the masked teacher spoke.

”This was the moment the betrayal began.”

The scene changed again.

Veyron stood alone in the chamber.

The other fragments floated around the First Door.

Azeroth was gone.

Evelyn was outside gathering the last of the armies.

Seraphina had left to negotiate with the seven kingdoms.

Veyron approached the Crown Fragment.

He reached for it.

The moment his fingers touched the crystal, black light spread through his body.

A voice came from beyond the Door.

**You are not the king.**

Veyron knelt.

”I know.”

**You are not the lock.**

”I know.”

**You are the heir.**

Veyron lowered his head.

”What do you want?”

The darkness beyond the Door moved.

**Freedom.**

The memory shifted.

Veyron stood in front of the seven heroes.

The white spear rested in the hands of their leader.

The hero looked at Veyron.

”You claim Azeroth is preparing to open the Door.”

”He is.”

”And you know how to stop him?”

”I do.”

”What must we do?”

Veyron looked at the spear.

”You must kill him before he completes the ritual.”

The hero hesitated.

”You were his student.”

”I was.”

”You served him.”

”I served the world.”

The lie sounded convincing.

Ethan remembered the next part.

Veyron had shown the heroes false records.

He had altered the academy’s archives.

He had created an image of Azeroth as a tyrant seeking godhood.

The heroes believed him because they wanted to.

They had feared Azeroth for years.

Veyron only gave their fear a direction.

Noah looked at Ethan.

”So he convinced everyone that you were the threat.”

”Yes.”

”Why didn’t you tell them the truth?”

”I was preparing the seal.”

”You could not stop to explain?”

”I believed I had time.”

Noah shook his head.

”That is a terrible strategy.”

”It was.”

The memory changed once more.

The final battlefield appeared.

The sky was torn open.

A black circle hung above the earth.

The seven heroes surrounded Azeroth.

The First Door was visible through the clouds.

Azeroth’s body was covered in wounds.

Veyron stood behind the heroes, holding the stolen Ninth Fragment.

Evelyn was on the ground.

Seraphina stood at the edge of the battlefield.

Azeroth looked toward her.

”You knew.”

Seraphina’s younger face was pale.

”I suspected.”

”You brought them.”

”I tried to stop them.”

”You brought them.”

Her silence answered him.

Azeroth looked toward Veyron.

”You opened the Door.”

Veyron’s expression was almost sad.

”You would never have opened it willingly.”

”You gave it a body.”

”I gave the world a choice.”

”You gave the thing beyond the Door a path.”

The white spear appeared in the hero’s hands.

Azeroth lifted his staff.

The battle began.

The memory moved too quickly for ordinary eyes.

Spells collided.

Mountains shattered.

The sky became fire.

Azeroth fought seven Sovereigns and twelve Saints while maintaining the seal around the First Door.

He could have killed them.

Ethan remembered that clearly.

He had the power to destroy them.

But every time he raised his authority, the Door reacted.

The entity beyond reality was waiting for him to abandon the seal.

So Azeroth fought defensively.

The heroes believed they were winning.

Veyron moved behind them.

The Ninth Fragment entered the white spear.

The spear changed.

It became a weapon capable of piercing a soul instead of a body.

Veyron whispered:

”Forgive me, my king.”

The spear struck Azeroth.

The memory froze.

Ethan stared at the image of his former self.

The spear had pierced his chest.

Behind him, the First Door was beginning to open.

Azeroth did not fall.

He turned his head toward Veyron.

”You have doomed them.”

Veyron’s face twisted.

”You were going to rule forever.”

”I was going to die.”

”No.”

Azeroth’s expression changed.

For the first time, the memory showed fear in his eyes.

”I was going to become the lock.”

The First Door opened wider.

The thing beyond reality looked through.

The memory ended.

The classroom returned.

No one spoke.

The masked teacher stood at the front.

Ethan looked at Seraphina.

”You knew he betrayed me.”

”Yes.”

”You knew I was using myself as the seal.”

”Yes.”

”You allowed the heroes to kill me anyway.”

Seraphina’s voice was quiet.

”The spear severed your authority from your body. It was the only way to stop the Door from using you as an entrance.”

”You could have told me.”

”You were already dying.”

”You could have told them.”

”They would not have believed me.”

”You could have killed Veyron.”

”I tried.”

Ethan’s eyes became cold.

”But you failed.”

Seraphina looked at the masked teacher.

The figure stood perfectly still.

”He was not there when I reached the battlefield.”

The memory teacher turned toward her.

”That is not entirely true.”

Seraphina’s expression tightened.

”You are a record.”

”I am a record of what the academy remembers.”

”And the academy is incomplete.”

”Yes.”

Ethan walked toward the front of the classroom.

”What are you hiding?”

The teacher turned toward him.

”I am not hiding anything.”

”Then show me the missing memory.”

The masked figure remained silent.

A thin crack appeared across his mask.

Ethan felt the Third Fragment respond.

The ancient academy had preserved the memory, but someone had removed a portion from its structure.

Not erased.

Removed.

The missing memory existed somewhere else.

The classroom walls began to shake.

The six doors appeared again.

This time, the white door opened on its own.

Beyond it was a corridor filled with red light.

A voice came from the corridor.

Not Veyron’s.

Not the Observer’s.

Evelyn’s.

”Ethan, do not follow the memory.”

Evelyn stepped through the door.

Her face was pale, and the black symbol around her throat was glowing.

The masked teacher turned toward her.

”You were not invited.”

”I was not asking permission.”

She looked at Ethan.

”The memory is incomplete because the truth was divided along with your soul.”

”Which fragment contains it?”

”The Fourth.”

Ethan stared at her.

”What does it represent?”

Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the black sword symbol on the wall.

”Sacrifice.”

A deep sound echoed from behind the sword door.

Metal scraping against stone.

The door began to open.

A smell of smoke and blood entered the classroom.

Evelyn’s expression became grim.

”The Fourth Fragment has awakened.”

The masked teacher raised one hand.

The memory began to collapse.

The desks dissolved.

The walls cracked.

The red sky beyond the windows turned black.

Noah grabbed Ethan’s arm.

”Are we leaving?”

”Not yet.”

The black sword door opened fully.

Behind it was a battlefield.

Thousands of bodies lay beneath a red moon.

At the center stood a figure wearing black armor.

The armor was cracked.

The helmet was missing.

The figure held a sword made from dark fire.

Ethan recognized the stance.

He recognized the sword.

He recognized the person.

A younger version of himself stood in the battlefield.

But this version was not the cruel ruler from the memories.

He was kneeling.

His hands were covered in blood.

Before him lay the bodies of his own soldiers.

The Fourth Fragment had preserved the memory of the greatest sacrifice he had ever made.

A sacrifice nobody knew about.

The armored figure lifted its head.

Its eyes burned violet.

Then it looked directly at Ethan.

”Come,” it said.

The battlefield behind it began to move.

The dead soldiers stood one by one.

Their weapons rose.

The memory became a doorway.

Evelyn stepped backward.

”The Fourth Fragment will not test your knowledge.”

”What will it test?”

”Whether you are willing to sacrifice the people around you.”

The Observer’s golden mark burned.

A whisper entered Ethan’s mind.

**Choose carefully.**

The masked teacher faded.

The classroom disappeared.

Ethan, Noah, Elena, Adrian, Professor Voss, Seraphina, and Evelyn stood at the edge of the dead battlefield.

The armored figure raised its sword.

Behind it, thousands of dead soldiers began to advance.

Ethan looked at the army.

Then at the people beside him.

The Fourth Fragment spoke:

”Only one side may leave.”

The black sword burned brighter.

And the battle began.
