50 Chapter 50: The First Lesson 2026-10-27

The academy alarms began to ring.

Unlike the alarm in the eastern courtyard, this one did not stop after a few seconds. Its deep tone traveled through every corridor, every tower, and every hidden chamber beneath Eldoria Arcane Academy.

The sound was not merely a warning.

It was a command.

All magical barriers activated at once.

The windows of the Disciplinary Hall turned black. Golden runes spread across the walls, sealing every entrance and exit. The five professors stood immediately, their mana rising like a storm.

The armored professor drew his sword.

”Seal breach in the eastern wing!”

The red-haired professor raised her staff.

”Which level?”

”The signal is moving.”

The blindfolded Saint tilted his head.

”No,” he said quietly. ”It is not moving.”

Everyone looked at him.

He turned toward the floor.

”It is rising.”

The stone beneath them trembled.

Ethan Vale stared at the violet word still floating above the cracked floor.

**WITNESS.**

The second fragment had awakened.

It was not like the Crown Fragment.

The Crown had entered his body and repaired a portion of his Mana Core. It had carried a part of his authority and a piece of his memory.

The second fragment felt different.

Colder.

More deliberate.

It was not trying to return to him.

It was searching for someone.

Or something.

The crack across the floor widened.

A thin stream of black mist seeped through it.

Noah Blake took a step backward.

”Is that supposed to happen?”

”No,” Professor Gray answered.

”That was not comforting.”

”It was not meant to be.”

Seraphina Crow remained seated behind the central desk.

Unlike the others, she did not seem surprised.

She was watching Ethan.

”You felt it,” she said.

Ethan kept his eyes on the crack.

”Yes.”

”What is it?”

”A memory.”

Seraphina’s golden eyes narrowed.

”Fragments do not usually awaken as memories.”

”Then this one is unusual.”

The armored professor turned toward him.

”You know what is below us.”

”I know that something is coming.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the one I have.”

The floor exploded.

A wave of dark energy tore through the Disciplinary Hall. The pillars cracked, the magical eyes shattered, and every person in the room was thrown backward.

Ethan struck the wall.

The impact drove the air from his lungs.

For several seconds, he could not breathe.

Then a hand grabbed his collar and pulled him away from the broken stone.

Noah was standing beside him.

”I saved you.”

”You pulled me two feet.”

”It was a heroic two feet.”

Another shockwave passed through the room.

Noah ducked.

Ethan looked toward the center of the hall.

The crack had become a hole.

Something was climbing through it.

First came a pale hand.

Then another.

Long white hair appeared above the edge of the broken floor.

A woman slowly pulled herself from the darkness below.

She looked no older than twenty-five.

Her skin was pale enough to appear almost translucent, and her hair fell around her face like snow. A black symbol covered her throat, shaped like an open eye surrounded by jagged lines.

She wore a torn white dress that had once been ceremonial.

Her bare feet touched the stone.

The moment she stepped into the hall, the temperature dropped.

Frost covered the broken pillars.

The magical flames in the room turned blue.

The woman looked around.

Her eyes were silver.

Not gray.

Not pale blue.

Silver, like polished metal reflecting moonlight.

Then she looked at Ethan.

For a moment, her expression was empty.

The next moment, she smiled.

”Azeroth.”

The name passed through the hall like a blade.

The professors reacted immediately.

The red-haired woman sent a spear of fire toward the stranger.

The armored professor charged from the opposite side.

The blindfolded Saint raised one hand.

Three spells struck the woman simultaneously.

Fire.

Steel.

And a silent wave of force capable of crushing a building.

The woman did not move.

The black symbol on her throat opened.

A dark circle appeared behind her.

Every spell disappeared inside it.

The fire went first.

Then the sword.

Finally, the Saint’s invisible force vanished without making a sound.

The woman tilted her head.

”You are still using the same methods.”

The blindfolded Saint went still.

”You know me?”

”I know all of you.”

She raised one hand.

The room twisted.

The armored professor was thrown into the ceiling. The red-haired professor crashed into the desk, shattering it. Professor Gray barely managed to form a barrier before being pushed across the floor.

The Saint remained standing.

His blindfold moved in the wind created by the pressure.

”You are not a human,” he said.

The woman looked at him.

”That is a disappointing conclusion.”

The Saint’s expression became grim.

”What are you?”

The woman ignored him.

Her silver eyes remained fixed on Ethan.

”You are alive.”

Ethan pushed himself away from the wall.

”Apparently.”

She took a step toward him.

Noah immediately moved between them.

The woman looked at Noah for the first time.

”Who is this?”

”A friend,” Noah said.

Ethan glanced at him.

Noah kept his eyes on the woman.

”Probably.”

The woman studied him with mild curiosity.

Then she looked back at Ethan.

”You made a friend.”

”I am capable of making several.”

”That is not what I meant.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

”You knew me?”

”I knew the man you were.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the only one you deserve at the moment.”

The black symbol on her throat pulsed.

The Crown Fragment inside Ethan’s chest answered.

Pain spread through his body.

He grabbed his wrist as the crown-shaped mark began to glow.

The woman saw it.

Her smile faded.

”You recovered one.”

”Yes.”

”Only one?”

”For now.”

She closed her eyes.

A strange emotion crossed her face.

Relief.

Then sorrow.

Then anger.

The transition was so quick that Ethan almost missed it.

”You should not have come back,” she whispered.

”That is what my enemies usually say.”

”I am not your enemy.”

”You attacked the academy.”

”They attacked me first.”

The armored professor rose from the rubble.

”You broke through a sealed chamber and attacked the faculty!”

The woman turned toward him.

”You placed the seal on my body.”

The professor froze.

His face changed.

Ethan noticed.

The man knew her.

Not personally, perhaps.

But he recognized the truth.

The woman looked at the five professors.

”You kept me beneath this academy for nine hundred and eighty-seven years.”

Seraphina finally stood from behind the broken desk.

The woman’s eyes shifted toward her.

”And you,” she said. ”You were there when they sealed me.”

Seraphina did not deny it.

”Your containment was necessary.”

”Necessary for whom?”

”For the world.”

The woman laughed.

It was not a happy sound.

”The world has always been a convenient excuse.”

Ethan looked between them.

”Who are you?”

The woman turned to him.

”My name is **Evelyn Ashford**.”

The name meant nothing to him.

But the aura surrounding her did.

He had seen it before.

Not in the present.

In the memories of his former life.

A white tower.

A golden-eyed girl standing beside him.

Her hand resting on the black crown of his staff.

A voice promising:

”I will be your witness.”

The memory vanished.

Ethan stared at her.

”You were there.”

Evelyn’s expression softened.

”You remember?”

”Not enough.”

”That is still more than I expected.”

She stepped closer.

The air between them became heavy.

”I was there when you divided your soul.”

Seraphina’s voice cut through the room.

”Evelyn.”

Evelyn did not look at her.

”You asked me to witness the ritual. You told me that if you failed, I was to destroy the fragments before they could be used.”

Ethan’s mind went silent.

”You knew?”

”Yes.”

”Why did you not destroy them?”

”Because you did not fail.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

”What does that mean?”

Evelyn raised her hand.

The black symbol on her throat began to glow.

A memory unfolded in the air between them.

The room disappeared.

Ethan saw a vast underground chamber.

Nine black crystals floated above a circular altar.

He stood at the center.

He was younger.

Not in appearance, but in spirit.

His eyes were colder. His posture was straighter. His presence was so overwhelming that the people around him could barely remain standing.

Evelyn stood beside the altar.

Seraphina was there too.

So was Veyron.

The nine crystals began to rotate.

Ethan’s former self spoke.

”When the First Door opens, the world will not survive.”

Evelyn looked at him.

”Then destroy it.”

”I cannot.”

”Why?”

”Because the Door is connected to me.”

Seraphina stepped forward.

”You created the Door.”

”No,” Azeroth replied. ”I discovered it.”

The memory changed.

A vast black space appeared beyond the world.

There were no stars.

No ground.

No light.

Something enormous moved in the distance.

It had no shape, yet Ethan’s former self had drawn its outline in the air with trembling hands.

”The First Door is not a gate to another place,” Azeroth said. ”It is an entrance for something that already exists outside reality.”

Evelyn stared at the darkness.

”What is it?”

Azeroth’s face became grim.

”An observer.”

The memory shattered.

Ethan returned to the Disciplinary Hall.

His breathing was unsteady.

The professors were still watching Evelyn.

Seraphina’s face had lost its calm expression.

”What happened after that?” Ethan asked.

Evelyn looked at him.

”You decided to use yourself as the lock.”

Ethan remembered flashes.

Nine fragments.

Nine sealed chambers.

A spell that tore through his soul.

His own hand holding a black blade.

Evelyn screaming.

Then the seven heroes arriving.

The white spear.

The final battle.

Ethan pressed his fingers against his temple.

”You did not divide your soul to survive.”

”No.”

”You divided it to become a seal.”

”Yes.”

”Then why did the heroes attack me?”

”Because they did not know the truth.”

”Who told them to kill me?”

Evelyn’s gaze shifted toward Seraphina.

Seraphina remained silent.

That silence told Ethan more than an answer would have.

He turned toward her.

”You.”

Seraphina’s golden eyes became cold.

”I told them what they needed to know.”

”You told them I was the threat.”

”You were.”

”I was holding the Door closed.”

”And your seal was failing.”

”So you allowed them to kill me.”

”I allowed them to destroy your body before the Door opened.”

Ethan took a step forward.

His presence changed.

The Crown Fragment rose within him.

Violet light spread across his arms.

The professors prepared their spells.

Evelyn moved between Ethan and Seraphina.

”Do not.”

Ethan looked at her.

”She betrayed me.”

”She saved the world.”

”She destroyed my life.”

”You destroyed many lives before that.”

The words struck harder than any spell.

The room became silent.

Evelyn’s eyes remained on him.

”You want to remember the truth? Then remember all of it.”

Images rose inside Ethan’s mind.

Kingdoms burning.

Cities falling.

People kneeling in fear.

His own army marching beneath black banners.

He remembered ordering the destruction of the Moon Kingdom.

He remembered condemning an entire magical order because its leader refused to serve him.

He remembered a village caught between two armies.

He had saved a child from the flames.

Then he had ordered the soldiers to continue.

The memories were not distorted.

They were his.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Azeroth Veyr had not been a misunderstood hero.

He had been a monster.

Perhaps he had fought something worse.

Perhaps his enemies had lied.

But that did not erase what he had done.

Evelyn lowered her hand.

”You were trying to save the world,” she said. ”But you believed only you deserved to decide what the world should become.”

Ethan opened his eyes.

”Perhaps I have not changed enough.”

”No,” Evelyn replied. ”You have changed.”

”How do you know?”

”Because the old you would have attacked Seraphina already.”

Ethan glanced at the broken room.

She was right.

Azeroth would not have argued.

He would have killed everyone who stood between him and an answer.

Ethan wanted to do that.

But Noah was beside him.

Elena was watching.

Professor Gray was injured.

And beneath the academy, something far worse was beginning to wake.

His anger remained.

But it was no longer the only thing inside him.

Suddenly, the academy shook violently.

A crack of black light tore through the ceiling.

The protective barriers around the academy began to fail one by one.

Seraphina looked toward the eastern wing.

”The second seal is collapsing.”

Evelyn turned to Ethan.

”You must go below.”

”Why?”

”Because the fragment has awakened, and it will not remain passive.”

”What is it?”

Evelyn’s expression became grim.

”The Witness.”

The name echoed in Ethan’s mind.

The second fragment.

Not a weapon.

Not a crown.

A witness.

A part of his soul that remembered everything he had done.

And everything he had tried to forget.

Seraphina stepped toward the broken floor.

”If the fragment leaves its chamber, it will merge with the academy’s memory network. Every secret stored within Eldoria will be released.”

Professor Gray looked at her.

”That would expose the history of the Final War.”

”It would expose more than that.”

Ethan understood.

The academy had been built over the Black Citadel.

Its foundations contained records, memories, and magical traces from his reign.

If the Witness awakened fully, the truth would not be revealed only to him.

It would be revealed to everyone.

Students.

Professors.

The kingdoms.

The entire world.

Noah looked at Ethan.

”What happens if it gets out?”

”People will learn what really happened.”

”That sounds good.”

”Not if you are standing near the person responsible.”

Noah thought about that.

”Still sounds better than the academy collapsing.”

Ethan looked at the hole in the floor.

Darkness waited below.

The second fragment was calling.

Not with words.

With memories.

Seraphina walked toward the opening.

”I will lead the descent.”

Ethan stepped beside her.

”No.”

Her golden eyes shifted toward him.

”You do not know the path.”

”I built it.”

”You are not strong enough.”

”I do not need to be.”

Evelyn moved to Ethan’s other side.

”I am coming.”

Seraphina looked at her.

”You were imprisoned for a reason.”

Evelyn touched the black symbol around her throat.

”I know.”

Noah raised his hand.

Everyone looked at him.

”I am coming too.”

Ethan frowned.

”You are not required.”

”I know.”

”The lower chambers may be dangerous.”

”I know.”

”You could die.”

Noah swallowed.

”I also know that.”

Ethan studied him.

”Why?”

Noah looked at the cracked floor.

Then at Ethan.

”Because you saved me during the examination. Because I do not think you should face whatever is down there alone. And because if I stay here, I will probably be questioned by people with swords.”

Ethan considered that.

”Your reasoning is flawed.”

”It is still reasoning.”

Elena stepped forward.

”I will come as well.”

Ethan looked at her.

”You are a noble heir. You have no reason to involve yourself.”

”My family has been investigating the academy’s sealed chambers for years. If the second fragment is connected to them, I need to know the truth.”

Adrian crossed the room.

”I am coming.”

Noah sighed.

”Of course you are.”

Adrian ignored him.

His eyes were on Ethan.

”I want to know what you are.”

Ethan turned toward the opening.

”Then stay close.”

The group gathered at the edge of the broken floor.

Below them, a spiral staircase had appeared inside the darkness.

The steps descended into the ancient foundations of Eldoria Arcane Academy.

At the bottom, something was waiting.

Something that had watched Ethan’s entire life.

Something that remembered every crime.

Every betrayal.

Every lie.

Ethan placed one foot on the first step.

A voice whispered from beneath the academy.

**Come and witness yourself.**

Ethan began to descend.

Above him, the academy bells continued to ring.

Below him, the second fragment waited.

And somewhere beyond the world, behind a door that had not yet opened, something turned its attention toward him.
