The Villain's Second Life

The entrance to the hidden academy appeared beneath Classroom One at midnight.

It had not been there when Ethan Vale left the room earlier that evening.

The academy had repaired most of the damage caused by the collapse. The desks had been replaced, the windows had been restored, and the cracks in the floor had been sealed with silver lines.

Only one thing remained unchanged.

A black door stood beneath the teacher’s desk.

It was tall, narrow, and covered in six chains.

At the center of the door was a broken eye.

Noah Blake stood in front of it with a lantern in one hand and a bag of food in the other.

”This is not a classroom.”

Ethan looked at the door.

”It will be.”

”It has chains.”

”Some classrooms have rules.”

”Rules are usually written on paper. They do not normally bite people.”

Noah pointed at the lowest chain.

It had a row of small teeth along its surface.

Ethan examined it.

”It might not bite people.”

”That is not comforting.”

Elena Frost stood beside them, wearing her academy uniform beneath a dark traveling cloak. Her sword hung at her waist, and a small crystal floated over her shoulder, illuminating the corridor.

Adrian Cross arrived a moment later.

He looked at the door, then at Ethan.

”Are we certain this is necessary?”

”No,” Ethan said.

”Then why are we here?”

”Because the Headmistress ordered us to attend.”

Adrian frowned.

”You follow orders now?”

”Only when refusing would be inconvenient.”

Noah opened his bag.

”Does anyone want a sandwich?”

Elena glanced at him.

”Why did you bring food?”

”You said the class has no lunch break.”

”It is midnight.”

”That is when people become hungry.”

Adrian looked at Ethan.

”Is he always like this?”

”Yes.”

”Why do you tolerate it?”

”I have not found an effective way to stop him.”

Noah took a bite of his sandwich.

”That is because I am powerful.”

”You are holding a sandwich with both hands.”

”It is a tactical sandwich.”

Before Ethan could ask what that meant, footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor.

Professor Aurelia Voss approached with a silver staff in one hand and a stack of books in the other.

She looked at the four students.

Her eyes stopped at Noah’s sandwich.

”Put that away.”

Noah swallowed.

”Why?”

”Because you are about to enter a restricted magical structure.”

”I thought it was a classroom.”

”It is both.”

”That seems unnecessarily complicated.”

Professor Voss ignored him.

Seraphina Crow followed behind her.

The Headmistress wore a black robe embroidered with silver stars, and the golden ring on her right hand was glowing faintly.

She stopped before the chained door.

”The Origin Class will not follow the same rules as your ordinary lessons.”

Noah raised his hand.

Seraphina looked at him.

”Yes?”

”Will there be food?”

”No.”

He lowered his hand.

”I already dislike this class.”

Seraphina turned toward the door.

”Everything inside the hidden academy is connected to the Third Fragment. It can alter its structure, create tests, and reveal memories. The place may look like a school, but it is not designed to educate ordinary students.”

Adrian examined the chains.

”What is it designed to do?”

”To prepare a successor.”

Ethan’s gaze moved toward the broken eye.

”A successor to what?”

Seraphina looked at him.

”To the person you used to be.”

The corridor became quiet.

Ethan felt the three fragments inside his Mana Core respond.

The Crown stirred first.

The Witness followed.

The Third Fragment remained silent, but the door began to open.

One chain unlocked.

Then another.

The teeth along the metal vanished.

The broken eye at the center of the door opened.

A blue-black light spilled into the corridor.

Seraphina raised her hand.

”Stay together. Do not follow voices. Do not touch any object unless Professor Voss gives permission. If the academy separates you, do not trust the first person who finds you.”

Noah looked at the door.

”Why not?”

”Because it may not be a person.”

”Why would it look like one?”

”To make you trust it.”

Noah thought about that.

”Can it look like food?”

Seraphina stared at him.

”I do not know.”

Noah immediately took another bite of his sandwich.

Ethan stepped through the doorway.

The others followed.

The corridor disappeared.

They stood inside a vast circular hall.

Unlike the hidden academy they had seen before, this area was perfectly preserved. The walls were made of dark glass, and thousands of silver lines moved across them like flowing rivers.

The ceiling was invisible.

Above them floated enormous spheres of light, each one showing a different scene.

A spell being created.

A battle taking place.

A child studying beneath a candle.

A city falling beneath black fire.

The air smelled of dust and rain.

At the center of the hall stood a stone table surrounded by five chairs.

Six doors were arranged along the walls.

Each door bore a different symbol.

A crown.

An eye.

A book.

A broken sword.

A black flame.

And an empty circle.

The Crown, the Witness, the Third Fragment, and three symbols Ethan did not recognize.

Seraphina remained near the entrance.

”I will not enter the lesson.”

Noah looked at her.

”You are leaving us here?”

”I am not leaving. I am observing.”

”From outside?”

”Yes.”

”That sounds like leaving with extra steps.”

Seraphina ignored him.

Professor Voss entered the hall and walked toward the table.

”This is the first Origin Class.”

Ethan looked at the symbols.

”What is the objective?”

”To understand the difference between using magic and understanding magic.”

”That is vague.”

”It is meant to be.”

Professor Voss placed her books on the table.

The books opened by themselves.

Their pages turned rapidly until each one stopped at a different Chapter.

”The academy will provide each of you with a spell.”

A symbol appeared above the table.

It was a simple circle surrounded by three broken rings.

”The spell is incomplete.”

Noah looked at it.

”Can we complete it?”

”That is the task.”

Adrian studied the structure.

”It resembles a containment formula.”

”Correct.”

Elena moved closer.

”The outer ring is missing an anchor.”

”Correct.”

Noah looked at Ethan.

”Do you know what the answer is?”

”Yes.”

”Can you tell us?”

”No.”

Noah frowned.

”That seems unfair.”

”The purpose is to learn.”

”I learn better when someone tells me the answer.”

”That is memorization.”

”It is efficient memorization.”

Ethan ignored him and examined the spell.

The formula was not simply incomplete.

It had been deliberately designed with several possible solutions.

The first would create a stable containment field.

The second would create a temporary barrier.

The third would produce a self-sustaining prison.

All three were technically correct.

But the academy was not testing their ability to complete the formula.

It was testing whether they understood what they were containing.

A low vibration moved through the hall.

The six doors opened at once.

Behind each one was darkness.

Something breathed behind the door marked with the broken sword.

Something scratched against the black flame door.

The empty circle remained completely silent.

Professor Voss stepped backward.

”The lesson has begun.”

The spell above the table changed.

A small creature appeared inside the incomplete circle.

It looked like a bird made of smoke.

Its body was thin and fragile, and one of its wings was broken.

It flapped desperately against the invisible boundaries of the spell.

Noah’s expression changed.

”It is trapped.”

”It is the object of the lesson,” Professor Voss said.

”Can we free it?”

”You can do whatever you believe is correct.”

Adrian approached the circle.

”If we complete the containment formula, we can stabilize the creature.”

Elena shook her head.

”It may be injured by the structure.”

”Then we repair the wing first.”

”Without knowing what it is made of?”

Adrian looked at her.

”What would you suggest?”

”Observe it.”

Noah raised his hand.

”It is a bird.”

Elena turned toward him.

”Thank you for your contribution.”

The creature suddenly slammed against the circle.

A burst of dark energy spread across the hall.

The six doors trembled.

The bird’s broken wing began to change.

Feathers turned into fingers.

Its beak split open.

A mouth appeared beneath its eyes.

Noah stepped backward.

”That is not a bird.”

Professor Voss watched the creature.

”Appearances are often the first layer of a spell.”

The creature screamed.

The sound entered their minds.

Ethan saw a battlefield.

Elena saw a frozen palace.

Adrian saw a burning village.

Noah saw a dinner table covered with food.

Noah blinked.

”Why did I see food?”

”Because you are easily influenced,” Ethan said.

The creature attacked the inside of the circle again.

The formula began to break.

Adrian drew his sword.

”We should destroy it.”

Ethan stopped him.

”No.”

”It is becoming unstable.”

”It is not becoming unstable.”

The creature struck the barrier again.

The outer ring cracked.

Ethan studied the spell.

”The circle is reacting to its fear.”

Elena looked at him.

”Fear is causing the instability?”

”No. The formula is designed to contain fear.”

”Then why is it breaking?”

”Because it is not afraid.”

The creature turned toward Ethan.

Its many eyes opened.

Ethan understood.

The creature was not trying to escape.

It was trying to make them believe it wanted freedom.

The spell was not a prison.

It was a mirror.

It reflected the intentions of the people observing it.

The more they assumed it was trapped, the stronger it became.

Ethan walked toward the circle.

Professor Voss raised her staff.

”Do not touch it.”

”I am not touching the creature.”

He placed his hand against the outer ring.

The spell reacted.

The creature’s shape changed again.

Now it looked like a young boy.

Ethan recognized him.

Caelan Rook.

The boy inside the circle smiled.

”Master.”

Noah immediately stepped beside Ethan.

”That is not Caelan.”

”I know.”

The false Caelan tilted his head.

”You left me in the burning academy.”

Ethan stared at him.

”Yes.”

”You ordered the students to fight.”

”Yes.”

”You knew they would die.”

”Yes.”

The false Caelan smiled.

”Then why do you hesitate?”

Ethan looked at the formula.

The spell was waiting for an emotional response.

Anger.

Guilt.

Regret.

Any of them would strengthen it.

The academy wanted to know whether he would react like Azeroth or Ethan.

The boy reached toward the edge of the circle.

”Release me.”

Ethan did not move.

The creature’s face changed.

Now it looked like a child from one of his memories.

”Save me.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

The Witness showed him the truth.

There was no creature inside the circle.

No boy.

No bird.

No monster.

There was only a mass of unstable mana shaped by observation.

The Third Fragment revealed the structure.

The formula did not need a stronger barrier.

It needed no barrier at all.

Ethan removed the outer ring.

The entire spell collapsed.

The creature vanished.

The dark energy dispersed harmlessly through the hall.

The six doors slammed shut.

Silence returned.

Noah stared at the empty circle.

”That was the solution?”

”The solution was recognizing there was no prisoner.”

Adrian lowered his sword.

”And if you had been wrong?”

”The creature would have escaped.”

Elena looked at the fading formula.

”You trusted your interpretation.”

”No.”

”Then what did you trust?”

”The spell.”

Professor Voss walked toward the table.

”That was not a test of power.”

”No.”

”It was a test of perception.”

”It was a test of whether we would accept the premise.”

Professor Voss nodded.

”The academy presented a problem and expected you to obey its assumptions.”

Noah raised his hand.

”So the lesson is that teachers are liars?”

Professor Voss considered that.

”Some teachers.”

Noah looked at Ethan.

”This is the best class so far.”

The empty circle on the table began to glow.

A new symbol appeared above it.

A golden eye.

The Observer’s mark.

The entire hall went cold.

Seraphina, still standing near the entrance, raised her staff.

”Everyone move away from the table.”

The eye opened.

A voice entered the hall.

**The first lesson is complete.**

The words were not spoken by the academy.

They came from beyond it.

Ethan felt the golden mark over his heart burn.

The Observer had found a way into the Origin Class.

The six doors opened again.

This time, something stood behind each one.

Behind the Crown door was a black throne.

Behind the Witness door were thousands of corpses.

Behind the Knowledge door stood an endless library.

Behind the broken sword was a battlefield.

Behind the black flame was a burning city.

Behind the empty circle was complete darkness.

The voice continued:

**Choose the door that defines you.**

Noah looked at Ethan.

”Are we supposed to choose?”

”No.”

”Good.”

The golden eye turned toward Ethan.

**You will choose.**

Ethan stepped toward the six doors.

The Crown pulsed inside his chest.

The Witness showed him his past.

The Third Fragment offered knowledge.

The remaining doors promised power, destruction, and emptiness.

All six were parts of him.

None of them were all of him.

Ethan reached the center of the hall.

”I refuse.”

The Observer’s presence pressed down.

**You cannot refuse what you are.**

”I am not choosing what I am.”

The golden eye widened.

”I am choosing what I do.”

Ethan turned away from the six doors.

The hall shook.

The black throne cracked.

The battlefield vanished.

The burning city went dark.

The endless library folded in on itself.

The corpses disappeared.

Only the empty circle remained.

The Observer screamed.

Not with anger.

With surprise.

The empty circle expanded around Ethan.

For one instant, there was no magic, no authority, no memory, and no outside presence.

There was only Ethan Vale.

A seventeen-year-old boy standing in a dark hall.

Then the circle shattered.

The Observer’s connection was forced out of the Origin Class.

The golden mark over Ethan’s heart dimmed.

Ethan fell to one knee.

Noah rushed toward him.

”Are you all right?”

Ethan breathed heavily.

”Yes.”

”Are you certain?”

”No.”

”That is more believable.”

Seraphina entered the hall.

Her eyes moved across the broken doors.

”You rejected the test.”

”I completed it.”

”You destroyed the lesson.”

”It was flawed.”

”The academy may not accept that answer.”

”The academy can complain.”

The Third Fragment pulsed.

A new door appeared where the empty circle had been.

It was smaller than the others.

Its surface was white.

There was no symbol on it.

Only a single sentence carved into the center:

**For the student who refuses to become a king.**

Ethan approached the door.

Caelan’s voice echoed faintly through the hall.

”Your next lesson is waiting.”

Ethan placed his hand on the white door.

It opened.

Beyond it was a classroom.

A normal classroom.

Desks.

A blackboard.

A single teacher standing at the front.

The teacher turned toward Ethan.

His face was hidden beneath a silver mask.

But Ethan recognized the voice.

Veyron.

”Take your seat,” the teacher said.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

”Your son is alive.”

”I know.”

”You are supposed to be dead.”

”I have been many things.”

The masked teacher pointed toward the nearest desk.

”Your lesson is about betrayal.”

Behind Ethan, the white door began to close.

Noah, Elena, Adrian, and Professor Voss stepped through after him.

The teacher looked at them.

”You were not invited.”

Noah raised his hand.

”We are his classmates.”

The teacher remained silent.

Noah lowered his hand.

”Also, we were already here.”

Ethan looked at the masked figure.

”Show me what happened.”

Veyron’s silver mask cracked.

”Very well.”

The classroom lights went out.

And the first memory of the Final War began.
