The Villain's Second Life

The classroom remained silent after the final message appeared.

**THE OBSERVER HAS NOT.**

The violet letters on the blackboard slowly faded, but the meaning remained.

No one spoke.

Even the students who had not seen the hidden academy understood that something had happened. They had felt the floor disappear. They had seen the room fill with strange light. Some remembered falling. Others remembered voices calling from beneath the academy.

None of them remembered the entire event.

Ethan Vale remembered enough.

He remembered the buried towers.

The old students.

Caelan Rook.

And the third fragment settling inside his soul.

Three lights now moved within his damaged Mana Core.

The Crown Fragment was violet.

The Witness Fragment was silver.

The third fragment was blue-black, filled with countless shifting symbols.

Knowledge.

It had not given him raw strength.

It had given him access.

Every magical formula created inside the old academy was now connected to him. Every lesson taught by its former professors. Every mistake made by its students. Every secret hidden in its foundations.

The amount of information was enormous.

Too enormous.

Ethan could feel it pressing against the edges of his mind.

If he opened the connection fully, the knowledge would flood through him and destroy what remained of his sanity.

He would have to examine it slowly.

One memory at a time.

Professor Aurelia Voss stood in the middle of the destroyed classroom.

Her staff was broken near the tip, her red hair was covered in dust, and a thin cut ran across her forehead.

She looked at the students.

”Is anyone seriously injured?”

A few students raised their hands.

”No,” she said. ”I mean seriously injured.”

The hands slowly lowered.

Noah Blake sat on the pile of books and raised his hand.

Professor Voss stared at him.

”What?”

”I may be emotionally injured.”

”You are not seriously injured.”

”I am unsure. My emotions have suffered several attacks today.”

”Then your emotions will have to survive.”

Noah lowered his hand.

”I dislike this professor.”

”You are not required to like me.”

”That is exactly what someone disliked would say.”

Professor Voss ignored him and walked toward Ethan.

The students watched her approach.

Some moved away from him.

Others looked at him with fear.

The blackboard had shown three fragments.

They had seen the words.

They had heard the ancient voices.

Even if they did not know what the fragments were, they understood that Ethan was connected to them.

Professor Voss stopped in front of him.

”You knew the guardians.”

”Yes.”

”You understood the hidden academy.”

”Some of it.”

”You spoke to the figure called Caelan Rook.”

”Yes.”

”And you made the guardians disappear.”

”I told them to stand down.”

”That is not the same thing.”

”It was sufficient.”

Professor Voss studied him.

”You are going to tell me what happened.”

Ethan looked at the students around them.

”Not here.”

”Why not?”

”Because some of them are listening.”

A student near the window immediately looked away.

Noah pointed at him.

”That one is definitely listening.”

The student turned red.

Professor Voss sighed.

”Everyone leave the classroom.”

The students did not move.

One of the boys near the back raised his hand.

”Are we allowed to leave?”

”Yes.”

”Is it safe outside?”

”No.”

The boy lowered his hand.

Professor Voss looked toward the ceiling.

”Academy guards will escort you to the main hall. Move.”

The students began leaving.

Some whispered as they passed Ethan.

”The fragments...”

”Three of them...”

”He controlled the guardians...”

”Is he really Azeroth?”

Ethan ignored them.

He had been called worse by people with more impressive qualifications.

Elena Frost remained near the window.

Adrian Cross stayed beside the blackboard.

Noah remained seated on the books.

Professor Voss crossed her arms.

”You three are staying?”

Elena looked at Ethan.

”I want answers.”

Adrian nodded.

”So do I.”

Noah raised his hand again.

”I want lunch.”

Professor Voss looked at him.

”That is not related.”

”It is related to my survival.”

Ethan turned toward the broken classroom door.

A group of academy guards had arrived in the corridor. Their armor was silver and dark blue, and each carried a suppression weapon.

At their center stood Professor Lucian Gray.

His eyes moved over the broken room and stopped on Ethan.

Then he looked at the message still fading on the blackboard.

His expression became serious.

”Headmistress Crow wants all of you in the central tower.”

Professor Voss stepped forward.

”I am giving my report first.”

”You can give it there.”

”What happened to the students?”

”They are being moved to the eastern dormitories.”

”Why?”

”Because the eastern wing is being sealed.”

Ethan looked at the floor.

The third fragment was still beneath the classroom.

It had not left.

It had simply connected to him.

”Is the fragment still active?” he asked.

Professor Gray’s attention shifted toward him.

”Yes.”

”Then sealing the wing will not help.”

”We are aware.”

”Are you?”

Professor Gray’s expression tightened.

”The academy has survived worse than a rebellious classroom.”

”The academy has not survived the Observer.”

The guards behind him grew tense.

Professor Gray lowered his voice.

”Do not say that name outside this room.”

”Why?”

”Because some things respond when they are named.”

The golden mark over Ethan’s heart grew warm.

A faint pressure passed through the classroom.

The broken windows darkened.

For half a second, a golden eye appeared in the glass.

Noah stopped breathing.

Elena drew her sword.

Adrian moved in front of the others.

The eye vanished.

Professor Gray looked at Ethan.

”What did you do?”

”Nothing.”

Noah closed his eyes.

”Please stop saying that.”

Ethan touched the mark over his heart.

The Observer was listening.

It had not appeared physically.

It had only reminded them that it could.

Professor Gray turned toward the guards.

”Seal the corridor.”

The guards raised their weapons.

Golden chains of light formed across the doorway.

Professor Voss looked at Ethan.

”Now will you explain?”

Ethan nodded.

”The hidden academy is connected to the original Hall of Origins. The Third Fragment preserved its knowledge and guardians. It recognized me as its creator.”

Professor Voss stared at him.

”You are saying that you created the original academy.”

”I designed its foundations.”

Adrian’s gaze sharpened.

”Why did the academy call you king?”

”Because the Crown Fragment is connected to its command system.”

”Why did it say you refused the crown?”

”Because it offered me control.”

”And you rejected it.”

”Yes.”

Adrian studied him.

”That does not sound like something Azeroth Veyr would do.”

Ethan looked at the fractured blackboard.

”I am not certain what he would do.”

The answer silenced the room.

Noah slid off the pile of books.

”You mean you do not know what you would have done before?”

”I remember what I did.”

”That is not the same as knowing what you would do now.”

Ethan looked at him.

Noah continued:

”You keep talking about Azeroth as if he is someone else.”

”He was.”

”But he was you.”

”Yes.”

”So which one are you?”

Ethan did not answer immediately.

The question had been waiting since the moment he woke in Greymoor.

He had tried to separate himself from Azeroth.

Ethan was the body.

Azeroth was the soul.

Ethan was the student.

Azeroth was the villain.

But the memories did not stay in separate boxes.

The guilt belonged to him.

The knowledge belonged to him.

The power belonged to him.

The choices belonged to him.

”I am both,” Ethan said.

Noah’s expression became serious.

”And what does that mean?”

”It means I remember what he did.”

”Do you regret it?”

Ethan looked at the blood on his sleeve.

”Yes.”

The word left his mouth quietly. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ

Noah did not smile.

He only nodded.

Elena turned away from the window.

”Regret is useless if it changes nothing.”

”I know.”

”Then what will you do?”

”Change what I can.”

Adrian crossed his arms.

”That sounds like a hero’s answer.”

”I am not a hero.”

”Then what are you?”

Ethan looked at the three lights inside his Mana Core.

”A problem.”

Noah nodded.

”That is the most accurate thing you have said.”

The classroom door opened.

Seraphina Crow entered alone.

The guards immediately lowered their weapons.

She looked at the ruined room, then at Ethan.

”The council is waiting.”

Professor Voss stepped toward her.

”Your academy is built over an unstable ancient structure, your wards are failing, and an extra-dimensional entity is watching one of our students.”

Seraphina’s eyes remained on Ethan.

”Yes.”

”You knew this could happen.”

”I knew it was possible.”

”You brought him here anyway.”

”I did not bring him here.”

”You accepted him.”

”I accepted the risk.”

Professor Voss’s voice sharpened.

”What about the students?”

Seraphina finally looked at her.

”I am doing everything possible to protect them.”

”Then explain why the eastern wing is still active.”

”Because the Third Fragment has bonded to the academy.”

Ethan frowned.

”Bonded?”

Seraphina walked toward the center of the room.

”The Third Fragment is not merely a container of knowledge. It is the original academy’s consciousness.”

Professor Voss stared at her.

”The academy is alive?”

”Not in the way you mean.”

The blackboard flickered.

A new line of violet writing appeared.

**THE ACADEMY REMEMBERS.**

Seraphina looked at it.

”It remembers its creator, its students, and its purpose.”

”What is its purpose?” Ethan asked.

”To prepare you.”

”For what?”

Seraphina did not answer.

Ethan stepped closer.

”For the First Door?”

The golden mark over his heart pulsed.

The air became heavy.

Seraphina nodded.

”Yes.”

The answer settled over the room.

The academy had not awakened by accident.

It had been waiting for him.

The fragments were not random pieces of power scattered across the world.

They were stages.

The Crown would give him command.

The Witness would give him memory.

The Third Fragment would give him knowledge.

The remaining six would restore something else.

His body.

His authority.

His connection to the First Door.

Or perhaps the Door itself.

”What are the other fragments?” Ethan asked.

Seraphina’s gaze became guarded.

”Each one represents a portion of what you were.”

”That is not enough.”

”You will learn in time.”

”I dislike waiting.”

”You have waited a thousand years.”

”That does not mean I enjoyed it.”

Noah glanced at Elena.

”Does he always speak like this?”

”Yes,” Elena said.

”Unfortunately,” Adrian added.

Seraphina raised one hand.

The golden eye appeared in the center of the room.

It was small this time.

Only the size of a coin.

But every person in the classroom felt its presence.

The Observer was looking through the mark.

Its attention moved from person to person.

Noah shivered.

Elena’s sword began to frost.

Adrian’s hand tightened around his weapon.

Professor Voss raised her staff.

Ethan stepped in front of them.

The golden eye focused on him.

A voice entered his mind.

**You gather companions.**

Ethan replied silently.

*You watch too much.*

**You will bring them to the Door.**

*No.*

**All roads lead to it.**

The eye widened.

A vision forced itself into Ethan’s mind.

A ruined city.

The sky torn open.

Noah lying beneath a broken tower.

Elena frozen inside a crystal of black ice.

Adrian kneeling before a burning throne.

Professor Voss holding a broken staff.

Seraphina dead at the foot of the First Door.

And Ethan standing alone before the darkness beyond reality.

The vision disappeared.

Ethan’s breathing became heavier.

The Observer whispered:

**You cannot protect them.**

Ethan raised his hand.

The Crown Fragment responded.

The Witness showed him the weakness.

The Third Fragment provided the formula.

He did not attack the eye.

He changed the relationship between observation and access.

The golden eye cracked.

The vision shattered.

The pressure vanished.

The blackboard went dark.

Everyone in the room stared at Ethan.

Seraphina’s expression was the most serious he had seen yet.

”You altered the Observer’s connection.”

”I closed the window.”

”You should not be capable of that.”

”I am beginning to hear that too often.”

The golden mark over his heart faded slightly.

But it did not disappear.

A thin crack now ran through it.

The Observer had been pushed back.

Not defeated.

Professor Gray entered behind Seraphina.

”The council has issued its decision.”

Ethan turned toward him.

”What decision?”

”Your provisional admission is being revised.”

Noah immediately stepped forward.

”Are they expelling him?”

”No.”

Professor Gray looked at Ethan.

”The Headmistress has created a special classification.”

Seraphina spoke.

”Ethan Vale will remain enrolled in Class One.”

”That is reasonable,” Professor Voss said.

”He will also attend a second class beneath the academy.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

”What class?”

Seraphina’s golden eyes reflected the broken blackboard.

”The **Origin Class**.”

The room became silent.

Professor Gray continued:

”Classes will be held in the hidden academy. Attendance is mandatory. The curriculum will be determined by the Third Fragment.”

Noah raised his hand.

”Does it have a lunch break?”

Seraphina looked at him.

”No.”

Noah turned toward Ethan.

”I refuse.”

”You cannot.”

”I can try.”

Ethan looked toward the floor.

Deep beneath the classroom, the Third Fragment pulsed.

A new door opened in the hidden academy.

On its surface was a symbol Ethan had not seen in a thousand years.

A broken eye surrounded by six chains.

The remaining fragments had noticed his return.

And one of them had begun moving toward him.

Seraphina looked at Ethan.

”Your first Origin Class begins tonight.”

Ethan glanced at Noah, Elena, and Adrian.

Then at Professor Voss.

Then at the golden mark over his heart.

He had wanted answers.

He had wanted his power back.

He had wanted to understand what happened to him.

Now the academy was offering all three.

The price was obvious.

He would have to descend deeper.

And something beyond the world would be watching every step.

Ethan walked toward the ruined classroom door.

”Then we should not be late.”

Noah sighed.

”I hate that I am still following you.”

”You are free to leave.”

”No, I am not.”

”Why?”

Noah looked toward the golden mark.

”Because if the universe is trying to kill you, I want to see whether it succeeds.”

Ethan almost smiled.

Almost.

Deep beneath them, the hidden academy opened its gates.

And in the darkness beyond reality, the Observer opened another eye.
