The Villain's Second Life

The staircase descended farther than it should have.

Ethan Vale counted the steps as he walked.

One hundred and twelve.

One hundred and thirteen.

One hundred and fourteen.

The academy had been built over ancient ruins, but these stairs extended far below the original foundations. The stone walls gradually changed as they descended. The polished black stone of the academy disappeared, replaced by rough gray rock covered in thin silver veins.

The veins pulsed with a faint light.

Every pulse carried a memory.

Ethan could feel them brushing against his mind.

A battlefield beneath a red moon.

A city surrounded by black fire.

A child crying beside a broken statue.

A king begging for mercy.

Ethan kept walking.

Noah Blake followed behind him, gripping a lantern with both hands.

The lantern was an ordinary magical tool, the type sold in village markets. Its light was weak and yellow, and its glass had already cracked during the descent.

Noah lifted it toward the wall.

”Are those bloodstains?”

Elena Frost looked at the silver veins.

”No. They are memory traces.”

”That was my second guess.”

Adrian Cross walked behind Elena, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

Evelyn Ashford descended in silence.

She did not need a lantern. The black symbol around her throat gave off enough pale light to illuminate the steps around her.

Seraphina Crow led the group.

She moved as though she had walked these stairs many times before.

Ethan noticed.

”You have been here.”

Seraphina did not turn around.

”Yes.”

”How many times?”

”Enough.”

”That is not a number.”

”It is the only answer you are getting.”

Noah leaned toward Ethan.

”She sounds like you.”

”That is unfortunate.”

”I think she sounds worse.”

Seraphina glanced back.

”I can hear you.”

Noah smiled awkwardly.

”I was complimenting your communication skills.”

”You should practice more.”

The staircase turned sharply.

The air became colder.

Ethan stopped.

Everyone behind him halted as well.

A faint sound had risen from below.

A child laughing.

The sound echoed through the stairwell.

Noah’s grip tightened around the lantern.

”Was that supposed to happen?”

”No,” Seraphina said.

The laughter came again.

This time, it was closer.

Ethan looked down the stairs.

A small figure stood at the bottom.

It appeared to be a girl of eight or nine years old. She wore a simple white dress and had long black hair covering most of her face.

She was barefoot.

Her head was lowered.

One hand rested against the wall.

Noah raised the lantern.

”Is she real?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

”No.”

The girl lifted her head.

Her face was blank.

No eyes.

No nose.

No mouth.

Only smooth, pale skin.

Noah made a small sound.

The girl smiled anyway.

A mouth appeared across her face.

”Father?”

The word echoed through Ethan’s mind.

The staircase vanished.

For one moment, he was standing in a village.

The sky was red.

The buildings were burning.

A young girl stood in front of him, covered in ash.

Her face was not blank now.

She had frightened blue eyes.

”Please,” she said. ”My father is still inside.”

Ethan remembered this.

He remembered standing before the village with his army behind him.

He remembered the city that had refused to surrender.

He remembered giving the order.

Burn it.

Leave nothing standing.

The girl had reached for his cloak.

Ethan had looked down at her.

Then he had walked away.

The memory shattered.

Ethan returned to the staircase.

The blank-faced girl was standing one step below him.

”Father?” she asked again.

Ethan’s expression hardened.

”You are not real.”

The girl tilted her head.

”Neither are you.”

Ethan raised his hand.

A thin violet flame formed above his palm.

The girl opened her mouth.

The flame disappeared.

A wave of force struck Ethan in the chest.

He flew backward and hit the wall.

His Mana Core cracked.

Noah shouted and rushed toward him.

”Ethan!”

The girl moved.

She did not walk.

She appeared in front of Noah.

Ethan pushed away from the wall.

”Do not let her touch you!”

Noah froze.

The girl reached for his face.

Ethan crossed the distance in an instant and struck her arm.

His fist passed through empty air.

The girl’s form scattered into black smoke.

Then she reappeared behind him.

Her fingers touched the back of his neck.

Ethan saw another memory.

A throne room.

He was sitting on a black throne.

A woman knelt before him, blood running from her mouth.

”Please,” she whispered. ”My people have surrendered.”

Ethan remembered raising his hand.

He remembered the woman’s death.

He remembered feeling nothing.

The vision ended.

Ethan staggered forward.

The girl stood in the middle of the staircase.

Around her, dozens of pale shapes began to form.

Kings.

Soldiers.

Children.

Mages.

Everyone he had killed.

Everyone he had abandoned.

Everyone whose suffering had been useful to him.

Noah stepped beside Ethan.

”What are those?”

”Memories.”

”They look angry.”

”They have reason to be.”

One of the figures moved toward Ethan.

It was a man wearing the armor of an old royal guard.

He held a broken sword.

”You promised us protection,” the figure said.

Another appeared beside him.

A woman with burned skin.

”You promised mercy.”

A third figure emerged.

A child.

”You promised nothing.”

The figures began to climb.

Their footsteps echoed through the stairwell.

Ethan felt the old instinct rise inside him.

Destroy them.

Erase the memory.

Burn the entire chamber.

The Crown Fragment responded to his anger.

Violet light spread through his veins.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

”Do not use your authority here.”

Ethan looked at her.

”Why?”

”Because this place is connected to the Witness.”

”What does that mean?”

”It will use anything you release against you.”

The figures continued climbing.

Seraphina turned toward the walls.

”The chamber is close.”

”Then move,” Ethan said.

They continued down the stairs.

The apparitions followed.

They did not attack immediately.

They watched.

They whispered.

They repeated the things Ethan remembered saying.

The promises.

The commands.

The names of the dead.

Noah remained beside him.

His face had gone pale.

”You really did all these things?”

Ethan did not answer.

Noah looked at him.

”I am not asking to judge you.”

”Why are you asking?”

”Because I need to know who I am walking beside.”

Ethan continued descending.

”You are walking beside Ethan Vale.”

”That is not enough.”

”It will have to be.”

Noah was silent for several steps.

Then he said:

”Fine.”

Ethan glanced at him.

”You accept that?”

”No. I am postponing the argument until we are not surrounded by dead people.”

That answer was so unreasonable that Ethan almost smiled.

Almost.

The staircase ended at a massive underground hall.

The chamber was circular, with a ceiling so high that the darkness above swallowed the lantern light. Hundreds of silver threads stretched from the walls toward the center, where a black crystal floated above a stone altar.

Inside the crystal was a human silhouette.

It was kneeling.

Its head was lowered.

Its hands were bound behind its back.

The moment Ethan entered, the figure lifted its face.

The crystal became transparent.

The person trapped inside looked exactly like Ethan.

Not Ethan as he appeared now.

Azeroth Veyr.

He wore a long black coat, a broken crown, and an expression of absolute calm.

The illusion stood inside the crystal.

Then it opened its eyes.

”Finally.”

Every silver thread in the chamber lit up.

The figures on the staircase disappeared.

The crystal cracked.

Seraphina stepped forward.

”Witness Fragment.”

The image inside the crystal turned toward her.

”You still use that name.”

”It is what it is called.”

”No,” the fragment said. ”It is what you chose to call it.”

Ethan stared at the figure.

”You are not a memory.”

The figure smiled.

”Correct.”

”You are part of me.”

”Also correct.”

”Then why do you look like me?”

”Because I remember you better than you remember yourself.”

The crystal cracked again.

Evelyn stepped forward.

”Do not listen to it for too long.”

The Witness turned toward her.

”You are still protecting him.”

”I am stopping you from manipulating him.”

”Is there a difference?”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

The Witness looked at Ethan again.

”You have returned weak.”

”So I have been told.”

”You have returned confused.”

”That is temporary.”

”You have returned with friends.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

The Witness looked at Noah, Elena, and Adrian.

”They will die because of you.”

Noah stepped forward.

”You seem unpleasant.”

The Witness’s gaze moved to him.

”You are the first person he has allowed to stand close.”

Noah glanced at Ethan.

”Is that true?”

”Yes.”

”That is almost touching.”

The Witness ignored him.

”You think friendship will change him,” it said. ”You think affection will replace a thousand years of blood.”

Ethan walked toward the crystal.

The Crown Fragment pulsed beneath his chest.

”I do not need replacing.”

The Witness smiled.

”That is what you said before.”

A memory appeared above the altar.

Azeroth stood before an army of black-armored soldiers.

The battlefield behind him was covered in corpses.

A young Veyron stood at his side.

So did Evelyn.

Seraphina was present as well.

Azeroth spoke to the army.

”The world is divided because weak rulers cling to the illusion of freedom. We will unite it beneath one law.”

The soldiers cheered.

The memory changed.

A city surrendered.

The people opened their gates.

Azeroth entered.

The leaders knelt.

He ordered them executed.

Noah looked at Ethan.

”Why did you kill them if they surrendered?”

”They were going to rebel later.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It was a decision.”

The memory changed again.

A small village.

A line of prisoners.

Azeroth walking among them.

A boy stepped forward.

”Are you the Demon King?”

Azeroth stopped.

The boy was shaking, but he raised his head.

”Are you going to kill us?”

The younger Azeroth looked at him.

Then he placed a black coin in the boy’s hand.

”Leave before sunset.”

The boy stared at the coin.

”Why are you helping us?”

Azeroth walked away.

”Because I can.”

The Witness spoke.

”You spared one village.”

”I remember.”

”You destroyed twenty-seven others.”

”I remember.”

”You believe that one act makes you different from the monster they called you.”

”No.”

The answer surprised everyone.

Ethan looked at the crystal.

”I do not need one good act to erase twenty-seven bad ones.”

The Witness became silent.

Ethan continued.

”I did terrible things. I used peace as an excuse for control. I called fear order and obedience loyalty. I may have fought a greater threat, but that does not make me innocent.”

Noah stared at him.

Elena’s expression softened slightly.

Adrian looked away.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The Witness watched Ethan without speaking.

Then it said:

”You are not the same.”

”Perhaps.”

”You admit guilt.”

”I remember it.”

”That is not the same as accepting it.”

Ethan placed his palm against the crystal.

The surface was cold.

”I accept that I did those things.”

The black crystal trembled.

The silver threads snapped one after another.

Seraphina’s expression changed.

”What are you doing?”

”Taking back what belongs to me.”

The Witness raised its head.

”Do you want your memories?”

”Yes.”

”Even the ones that will destroy the life you built?”

”Yes.”

”Even the memories of why you failed?”

Ethan’s hand tightened against the crystal.

”Yes.”

The Witness smiled.

”Then witness.”

The crystal shattered.

A flood of memories entered Ethan’s mind.

He saw the final battle.

Not from a distance.

From inside his own body.

The seven heroes surrounded him.

Behind them stood Seraphina, Evelyn, and Veyron.

The sky was broken.

The First Door was visible beyond the clouds.

Azeroth was bleeding from dozens of wounds, yet he remained standing.

The white spear pierced his chest.

Seraphina shouted something.

Evelyn was crying.

Veyron was holding one of the nine fragments.

Then Ethan remembered the truth.

He had not been betrayed by all of them.

Only one person had betrayed him.

Veyron.

He had stolen the Ninth Fragment and used it to weaken the seal.

He had opened the First Door.

He had summoned the heroes.

And he had ordered the attack.

But why?

The memory shifted.

Veyron stood before the Door.

Something spoke from beyond it.

A voice without sound.

A promise without words.

Veyron lowered his head.

Then he turned toward Azeroth.

”Forgive me, my king.”

The memory ended.

Ethan collapsed to his knees.

The black crystal was gone.

The Witness stood before him, no longer trapped.

It had taken the form of a transparent version of Ethan, its body covered in silver cracks.

”You remember now.”

Ethan breathed heavily.

”Veyron.”

”Yes.”

”He opened the Door.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

The Witness looked toward the darkness above.

”Because he believed the thing beyond the Door could give him what you never would.”

”Power?”

”Freedom.”

Ethan stood slowly.

The second fragment began to dissolve.

Its light flowed toward him.

Before it entered his body, the Witness held out one hand.

”One warning.”

Ethan looked at it.

”About what?”

”The memories you recovered are incomplete.”

”Why?”

”Because one memory was removed.”

”By whom?”

The Witness looked toward Seraphina.

”Ask the woman who told the heroes to kill you.”

Seraphina’s face was unreadable.

Ethan turned toward her.

”You removed a memory from my soul.”

”I had to.”

”What memory?”

”I will explain.”

”Now.”

The Witness’s body began to fade.

Its silver light moved toward Ethan.

”Not yet,” it whispered.

”First, survive the one who is coming.”

A sound echoed from above.

Slow footsteps.

Someone was descending into the chamber.

Seraphina looked toward the staircase.

Her expression finally changed.

Fear.

Not concern.

Not caution.

Fear.

Ethan felt the second fragment enter his chest.

The Witness became part of him.

His Mana Core tightened.

A flood of memories crashed through him.

He saw a white door.

He saw a golden eye.

He saw Seraphina standing before him with a blade in her hand.

And he heard his own voice say:

”If I ever remember what you did, I will kill you.”

Ethan opened his eyes.

The footsteps reached the bottom of the stairs.

A man stood at the entrance.

He wore a black cloak and a silver mask.

Ethan recognized the mana immediately.

Veyron.

But the figure removed the mask.

The face beneath it was not ancient.

It belonged to a young man with pale skin and black hair.

His eyes were violet.

He smiled at Ethan.

”Welcome back, Azeroth.”

Noah lifted his weapon.

Elena drew her sword.

Adrian moved in front of the others.

Seraphina raised her hand.

Ethan did not move.

The young man stepped into the chamber.

”I have been waiting for you.”

Ethan stared at him.

”You are not Veyron.”

The man’s smile widened.

”No.”

He touched the black mark at his throat.

”I am his son.”

Behind him, the darkness began to open.

Something enormous watched from beyond the stairwell.

The young man bowed.

”My name is **Lucian Veyr**.”

He raised his head.

”And I have come to finish what my father started.”
