The Villain's Second Life

The first day of lessons began with a warning.

Ethan Vale was standing outside Classroom One while a golden eye stared at him from beneath the floor.

The eye was not visible to anyone else.

To Noah Blake, the corridor was nothing more than a corridor.

To Elena Frost, it was an old section of the academy with unusually strong protective wards.

To Adrian Cross, it was simply the entrance to their new classroom.

But Ethan could feel the sealed presence beneath the stone.

It was not sleeping.

It was listening.

The third fragment had awakened sometime during the night, and unlike the Crown or the Witness, it had not attempted to merge with him.

It had simply observed.

Waiting.

Ethan placed one hand against the classroom door.

A faint pulse traveled up his arm.

**Three have returned.**

The voice was not the Observer’s.

It belonged to the golden eye beneath the floor.

Ethan withdrew his hand.

Noah noticed.

”Did the door insult you?”

”No.”

”Then why are you staring at it?”

”I was thinking.”

”That is usually when things become dangerous.”

The classroom door opened before Ethan could respond.

A young woman stood on the other side.

She appeared to be in her late twenties, with short dark-red hair and gray eyes. Her black academy robe was decorated with thin golden lines, and a silver badge shaped like a burning feather rested over her heart.

She looked at the four students.

”Ethan Vale?”

”Yes.”

”Enter.”

Her gaze moved to Noah.

”No talking during the lesson.”

Noah nodded.

Then she looked at Ethan again.

”Especially you.”

Ethan stepped into the classroom.

The room was larger than it appeared from outside. Three rows of desks were arranged in a half-circle facing a wide blackboard. Large windows overlooked the eastern courtyard, though the glass was covered with faint magical symbols.

Twenty students were already seated.

The moment Ethan entered, several conversations stopped.

Everyone knew him now.

The student who had broken the Origin Crystal.

The student who had defeated the corrupted Manticore.

The student whose name had appeared beside the word **Azeroth Veyr**.

Noah walked behind him and chose a seat near the back.

Ethan sat beside the window.

Elena chose the desk on his left.

Adrian sat directly across from him.

Noah looked at the arrangement and frowned.

”Why are we sitting together?”

”Because the seats were empty,” Elena answered.

”That does not explain anything.”

”It explains the situation.”

The instructor closed the door.

The silver symbols on the walls brightened.

”My name is Professor Aurelia Voss,” she said. ”I will be responsible for your primary arcane studies.”

She walked toward the center of the room.

”Before we begin, understand this: Eldoria Arcane Academy does not care about your family, your reputation, or the rumors surrounding you. You are students now. Your performance will determine your position.”

Her gray eyes moved toward Ethan.

”Not your name.”

Several students glanced at him.

Aurelia continued.

”The first lesson will concern the foundations of magical theory.”

A black diagram appeared on the board.

It showed a circle surrounded by seven smaller rings.

”Every spell begins with three components: intent, structure, and energy.”

She pointed to the central circle.

”Intent defines what the spell is meant to accomplish.”

Then to the surrounding rings.

”Structure determines how the spell transforms mana into an effect.”

Finally, she raised one finger.

”Energy provides the force required to activate it.”

A student in the front row raised his hand.

Professor Voss nodded.

”What happens if one component is missing?”

”The spell fails,” the student replied.

”Correct.”

Ethan looked at the diagram.

It was a simplified explanation.

Useful for beginners.

Wrong in several important ways.

Intent did not define the spell.

Intent only defined what the caster believed the spell was meant to accomplish.

The true foundation was authority.

A spell worked because reality accepted the relationship between the caster and the desired result.

Most modern mages never reached that level of understanding.

They treated magic as a language.

They memorized words, symbols, and structures without realizing that every spell was an argument with the world.

Ethan had once mastered that argument.

He had also become arrogant enough to believe the world could never reject him.

That mistake had cost him everything.

Professor Voss changed the diagram.

”This is a basic flame spell.”

A small red circle appeared on the board.

”Most of you have used it before. It gathers mana, converts it into heat, and gives the energy a stable shape.”

She raised her hand.

A small flame appeared above her palm.

It was perfectly controlled.

The students watched closely.

”Magic is not about force. It is about precision.”

The flame vanished.

”An uncontrolled spell consumes more mana, creates greater risk, and usually produces a weaker result.”

A student near the front raised his hand.

”Then why do advanced mages use large-scale spells?”

”Because sometimes precision requires greater energy.”

”That sounds contradictory.”

”It is only contradictory if you confuse size with complexity.”

Ethan glanced at the third fragment beneath the classroom.

The sealed eye pulsed once.

A faint line appeared across the floor.

No one else noticed.

The fragment was reacting to the lecture.

Not to fire magic.

To the principle of structure.

It was remembering something.

A door.

A lock.

A pattern made of three circles and nine lines.

Ethan reached inward.

The Crown Fragment remained silent.

The Witness showed him nothing.

The third fragment continued to observe.

Professor Voss began writing a formula on the board.

The symbols were familiar.

Too familiar.

It was one of the foundational diagrams used in the old Black Citadel.

Ethan stared at it.

The academy had not merely adopted his magical theory.

It had built its basic curriculum on it.

Professor Voss turned toward the class.

”Who can identify the flaw in this formula?”

The room became quiet.

The students examined the symbols.

Adrian raised his hand.

”Yes?”

”The third ring is incomplete. It will cause instability when the energy reaches the outer boundary.”

”Correct.”

Another student raised his hand.

”The second and fourth rings are too close together. The spell will consume more mana than necessary.”

”Also correct.”

Professor Voss looked across the room.

”Anyone else?”

Ethan lifted his hand.

The instructor nodded.

”Yes, Mr. Vale?”

”The formula is not designed to create fire.”

Several students turned toward him.

Professor Voss’s eyebrows rose.

”Explain.”

”The structure gathers mana and forces it into a heated state, but the outer ring is not an elemental ring. It defines expansion.”

Ethan stood and walked toward the board.

He pointed at the final symbol.

”This formula does not create fire. It creates a pressure wave with a burning surface.”

The students stared at the diagram.

Professor Voss did not interrupt.

Ethan continued.

”The difference is small at low output. At higher output, the spell becomes unstable. The flame will appear normal until it reaches a certain density. Then the pressure wave will expand before the heat fully forms.”

Adrian looked at the board.

”That would cause the spell to explode outward.”

”Correct.”

”Then why has this formula been used for basic flame spells for decades?”

”Because most people never push it far enough to notice.”

Professor Voss slowly walked toward the board.

She studied the symbols.

Then she looked at Ethan.

”How did you reach that conclusion?”

”The formula is poorly written.”

”That is not an explanation.”

”It is the correct one.”

A few students laughed nervously.

Professor Voss did not.

She raised her hand and activated the diagram.

A small flame appeared.

For several seconds, it burned normally.

Then the outer ring brightened.

The flame expanded suddenly.

A burst of heat struck the front row.

Students shouted and raised barriers.

The spell collapsed.

Silence filled the room.

Professor Voss stared at the remains of the formula.

Ethan returned to his seat.

Noah leaned toward him.

”You just attacked the teacher with homework.”

”I demonstrated a flaw.”

”You embarrassed her.”

”That was not my intention.”

”You looked like you enjoyed it.”

”I did not.”

”You smiled.”

”I smile when people are wrong.”

”That is worse.”

Professor Voss erased the formula.

She did not look embarrassed.

She looked interested.

”Class,” she said, ”the formula on the board is an outdated version of the first flame structure. It has been used by the academy for one hundred and eighty-six years.”

A murmur spread through the room.

”From this moment onward, it will be replaced.”

Her eyes moved toward Ethan.

”Mr. Vale, remain after class.”

Ethan expected that.

The lesson continued.

For the next hour, Professor Voss explained the structure of elemental spells. Ethan listened in silence, correcting her only when necessary.

He discovered three more flaws.

He kept them to himself.

Noah fell asleep during the explanation of mana circulation.

Elena took detailed notes.

Adrian watched Ethan more than he watched the board.

The third fragment continued to pulse beneath them.

It was growing stronger.

At the end of the lesson, the students began packing their books.

Professor Voss raised her hand.

”Everyone leave except Ethan Vale.”

Noah stood.

”I will stay.”

”No.”

”He may need assistance.”

”He will not.”

Noah looked at Ethan.

Ethan gave him a small nod.

”Wait outside.”

Noah frowned but obeyed.

Elena and Adrian left with the others.

The classroom door closed.

Professor Voss remained near the blackboard.

”You recognized that formula.”

”I recognized the structure.”

”It was designed by the Black Sovereign.”

Ethan did not react.

Professor Voss studied him.

”The academy teaches that Azeroth Veyr created the first modern spell frameworks.”

”Did it?”

”That is what the records say.”

”Records are frequently inaccurate.”

”Your knowledge is not the knowledge of a village orphan.”

”Perhaps I read quickly.”

”You were born in Greymoor. The village library contains fewer than two hundred books.”

”Then I read all of them.”

Professor Voss almost smiled.

”You are either lying or hiding something.”

”Both are possible.”

She crossed her arms.

”Why did the Origin Crystal identify you as Azeroth Veyr?”

Ethan looked toward the windows.

Outside, students crossed the courtyard.

The academy seemed normal.

It was not.

The third fragment had awakened beneath their classroom.

The professor continued.

”I am not asking as a member of the disciplinary committee.”

”Then why are you asking?”

”Because I studied the old spell systems before joining the academy.”

She walked to the desk and opened a drawer.

Inside was a small metal disk engraved with a black crown.

Ethan recognized the symbol.

One of the insignias used by his old research division.

Professor Voss placed the disk on the desk.

”I found this beneath the eastern wing.”

”When?”

”Three years ago.”

”Why keep it?”

”Because I believed the academy was hiding something.”

Ethan looked at the disk.

”It is not an insignia.”

”What is it?”

”A seal marker.”

Her expression changed.

”What does it seal?”

Ethan glanced at the floor.

The third fragment pulsed again.

This time, the classroom windows turned black.

The symbols on the glass rearranged themselves.

A golden eye appeared beneath the floor.

Professor Voss stepped backward.

”What is happening?”

Ethan stood.

The entire classroom became silent.

The voice of the third fragment echoed through the room.

**The student has returned.**

Professor Voss looked at Ethan.

”Who is the student?”

The floor cracked.

A black hand emerged from beneath the central row of desks.

The desks rose into the air and shattered against the walls.

Ethan reached for his mana.

The Crown Fragment reacted.

The Witness opened its memories.

The golden mark over his heart burned.

A figure climbed from the darkness beneath the classroom.

It was a young man wearing an old academy uniform.

His body was translucent.

His face was covered by a silver mask.

The third fragment had created a vessel.

The figure turned toward Ethan.

Then it bowed.

”Master.”

Professor Voss raised her staff.

The figure did not acknowledge her.

Ethan stared at the masked student.

He knew that uniform.

It belonged to the first generation of Eldoria Arcane Academy.

A student from a thousand years ago.

One of his students.

”What is your name?” Ethan asked.

The figure lifted its head.

”**Caelan Rook.**”

The name unlocked a memory.

A brilliant young mage.

A boy who had begged Ethan to teach him Origin Magic.

A student Ethan had sent to the front lines during the Final War.

A student who had never returned.

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

”You died.”

Caelan’s masked face tilted.

”So did you.”

The third fragment pulsed beneath the floor.

Caelan raised one hand.

The classroom walls disappeared.

For a moment, Ethan saw the original academy.

The Black Citadel stood where the eastern wing now existed.

Students filled the halls.

A younger Ethan walked among them.

Caelan followed at his side.

Then the vision shifted.

The academy burned.

Caelan stood alone in the ruins, holding a broken staff.

He was waiting.

Waiting for Ethan to return.

The image vanished.

Caelan faced him again.

”I kept the classroom prepared.”

Ethan looked around at the cracked walls.

”For one thousand years?”

”For as long as the fragment remembered.”

”What do you want?”

Caelan pointed toward the floor.

”Your lesson has begun.”

The golden eye beneath the classroom opened fully.

A deep pulse shook the academy.

Above them, bells began to ring.

Outside the door, Noah shouted:

”Ethan! What is happening?”

Ethan looked at Caelan.

The masked student raised his hand.

The entire classroom began to sink.

Not collapse.

Sink.

The floor opened into a massive circular shaft, and the desks, walls, and students’ belongings were pulled toward the darkness below.

Professor Voss grabbed the edge of the doorway.

Ethan reached for Noah.

Their hands met.

The darkness beneath the classroom widened.

Caelan’s voice echoed through the falling room.

”Welcome to your first lesson, Master.”

Then Ethan, Noah, Professor Voss, and the entire classroom fell into the hidden academy below.
