Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

The people who came to watch the commotion were speechless. Is this really just watching a commotion? Why do the involved parties seem more gossiping than the onlookers?

The old lady looked at this dead girl, indifferent. She’s actually enjoying watching her own commotion?

The abusive words came out. Jiang Xinyu heard the foul language, suddenly stood up, dashed back inside the house, grabbed a firewood knife, ran out, raised it high, and charged at the old man sitting on the ground throwing a tantrum, attempting to strike.

Everyone was terrified. Wang Ailing instinctively hugged Jiang Xinyu’s waist from behind. ”Xinyu, don’t be impulsive, don’t be impulsive.”

”Sister, let go. Today, none of the Jiang Family will leave standing. Killing one is worth it, killing two is a profit, or else they’ll kill me. Let go.”

The elderly sitting on the ground was frightened and stood up, mainly because Jiang Xinyu’s expression was too ferocious.

”Xinyu, it’s not worth it.”

”Sister, it’s worth it. Since my parents passed away, these people haven’t shown up once. Now, when they hear there’s money, they can’t sit still? They want to throw me out, let me tell you. Even if I burn it all, I won’t give it to you.”

”Xinyu, Xinyu, don’t be like this.”

”I’ve had enough grievances. Today I’ll make them all leave horizontally. This is how I’ll live from now on. Whoever causes trouble, I’ll fight them desperately. What am I afraid of now? One person full means the whole family isn’t hungry. Barefoot is not afraid of wearing shoes.”

At this point, the spectators hurriedly left. This commotion isn’t worth getting involved in; this girl is truly crazy.

The Jiang Family also slunk out, not because they feared this frail little girl, but because she was right - she truly is barefoot. Why abandon a good life at home? Why bother with her?

”Don’t leave, don’t leave.”

She shouldn’t have said that; by saying so, the Jiang Family left even quicker, even the small-footed old lady flew like the wind.

”Let me tell you, if there’s a next time, I’ll perish together with you.”

Watching as the Jiang Family disappeared into thin air, Jiang Xinyu laughed out loud, ”Sister, how did I do in my performance?”

”You little brat, you scared me to death.”

”Sister, thank you for the cooperation, or else I couldn’t have performed alone.”

”You, now you’re famous. Who would dare to marry you in the future?”

”Just what I want, sister, I think being alone is quite good. Come on, let’s go inside; I have some good stuff for you.”

The two went into the main room, Jiang Xinyu scooped some water and lit the fire. ”Sister, hurry up and drink your porridge. I bought milk powder and wheat germ, let’s both have a taste today.”

”No need, keep it for yourself.”

”Sister, you’re treating me like an outsider. I see you as my role model, like my real sister.”

Wang Ailing clenched her back teeth, ”Fine, I’ll have a taste of wheat germ too then, they say it’s very sweet.”

”That’s the spirit, sister, we’re lifelong sisters now; I will never harm you.”

”Alright, I also promise never to harm you.”

The water boiled. Each of them had half a bowl of milk powder and half a bowl of wheat germ.

”Tasty, this is truly good stuff.”

”Yeah, sister, come by every now and then to satisfy your cravings.”

Wang Ailing just laughed. But inwardly she resolved to treat Jiang Xinyu well in the future.

After drinking, Jiang Xinyu took out the two boxes of matches and a bottle of kerosene she brought back for the Wang Family. With Wang Ailing, she measured against her own window and cut out two sheets of plastic, ”Sister, you deliver them home. I’ll come find you later.”

”Yeah, let’s go chop firewood.” Wang Ailing pulled out twenty cents and handed it to Jiang Xinyu before leaving.

Jiang Xinyu didn’t refuse either; this is business, a good friendship can’t be tainted by money.

She tidied up simply, carried her basket and went out. At the door, she met the neighbor aunt.

”Xinyu, are you okay just now?”

Jiang Xinyu smiled nonchalantly, ”I’m fine, aunt, I’m doing well.”

”Xinyu, if you act like this, they’ll exaggerate and speak ill of you.”

”It’s fine, aunt. At school, the teacher taught that rumors stop with the wise. Let them talk.”

”Sigh! How did you change so much, child?”

”I had no choice but to change. Since I want to live well, I have to stand up for myself. Alright, aunt, I’m going to cut firewood.”

”Go ahead, but don’t wear yourself out. You’re still young and need to take care of yourself.”

Arriving at the Wang Family gate, she saw Wang Xiaolong equipped just like the two of them.

”Brother Xiaolong, are you also going to pick firewood?”

Wang Xiaolong laughed honestly, ”I’m going to help you cut branches; you and Ailing are too slow, so you must pick enough quickly.”

”Let’s go, my brother is free today.”

Jiang Xinyu understood this was the Wang Family’s way to repay the favor of the plastic sheets, so she didn’t refuse.

With a strong laborer, working is fast. By four in the afternoon, they cut fifteen bundles of branches. The young man carried three bundles each without a problem.

Wang Xiaolong didn’t stay longer; after putting down the last batch of branches, he went home. Wang Ailing helped Jiang Xinyu spread them out in the yard.

”Your wood shed is full, later stack them beside it. Next time we go to the village, buy some tar paper and cover it, even snow won’t be an issue.”

”Yeah, sister, next market day, we go to the market?”

”Alright, we’ll go together. It’s gotten cold; we should buy some clam oil, or else the skin will crack.”

Wang Ailing helped spread them in the yard before going home to wash up.

Tonight’s porridge is even thinner than before, even with less wild vegetables.

”Sister, tomorrow let’s go to the mountains to see if there’s anything to eat? If it keeps being like this, we won’t have enough to eat later.

Oh, I bought a few pounds of food yesterday, a couple of days later we’ll have a good meal.”

”Save it, let’s just hold on, when it’s unbearable we’ll eat.”

”I bought two pounds of cornmeal, two pounds of sweet potato flour, and two pounds of sorghum flour.

Next year I’ll plant peanuts in this yard, I bought two pounds of shelled peanuts.”

”Save them, keep them all. Tomorrow my brother is going on a matchmaking, I’ll follow along.”

”Going as an advisor?”

”Yes, it’s introduced by my grandma. Our whole family will go tomorrow.”

”Alright, I’ll go pick firewood tomorrow, once you’re free, we’ll go together. Just the two of us going deep into the mountains, I’m not confident.”

”Alright, I’ll find you when I’m back tomorrow.”

Tonight Jiang Xinyu replenished her nutrition, couldn’t sleep, thinking about the events of the last few days, realizing that if she wants to survive here, she has to live the way she wants; being pitiable doesn’t earn sympathy.

Today was truly refreshing, in the past life, because of my own misfortune and low self-esteem, I was always submissive and timid, today’s incident made Jiang Xinyu realize that living differently, especially brazenly, is very gratifying.

Though one shouldn’t be too high-profile, living in line with one’s ideas is possible too.
