ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Wayne swore beneath his breath when the scout finished. The rest of the report was worse than the first sentence: villages warned against selling food to FireStorm, merchants threatened with seizure, roads placed under new inspections, and six lesser marcher lords willing to put their seals beneath Elton Caron’s complaint.

The accusation named Brienne directly.

Elton described her as a dangerous fugitive cast out by her own house, then used her presence beside Arlan as proof that FireStorm gathered lawless fighters under private command, and the claim was dishonest, but it had been built from details that could be made to sound plausible before anyone heard the other side. The six seals beneath the complaint made it more dangerous than Elton’s earlier accusations, because Renly could dismiss one aggrieved marcher lord as a feud; six voices could be presented as a border consensus.

The trade language was crafted with the same care; nobody wrote that FireStorm should starve. The notices spoke instead of unauthorized transit, inspection of suspicious cargo, and penalties for villages that supplied men accused of rebellion; a hungry family would care very little which phrase had emptied its granary.

Brienne’s face closed as she read the copied lines, and her fingers whitened around the leather wrapping of her greatsword. A few moments earlier she had asked to follow Arlan; now she looked toward the dark road as though measuring how far she could travel before dawn. ”I should leave.”

Wayne frowned. ”After what they just did?”

”Because of what they just did.” Brienne handed the parchment back to Arlan. ”He is using me against you. If I ride with FireStorm, every fool who already calls me unnatural becomes another voice saying you collect fugitives.”

She adjusted the sword across her back despite the pain in her arm.

”Lord Selwyn is my father, but I have embarrassed him often enough for half the Stormlands to know the stories. I will not make your people pay for them.” Brienne turned toward her horse.

”Stop.” She did.

Arlan waited until she faced him again. ”Do you believe you are a fugitive?”

”It does not matter what I believe if everyone else believes it.”

”It matters to me.”

The answer seemed to irritate her more than comfort her. ”You cannot cut down every man who laughs.”

”I have no intention of trying. Most would survive from lack of importance.” Wayne made a sound that might have been a cough.

Arlan stepped closer and pointed toward Brienne’s greatsword. ”You want to be judged by that. Not by your face, not by whether some lord wanted a daughter who smiled prettily at feasts, and not by what men say after you beat them.”

Brienne said nothing; she had heard the same argument reversed since childhood: that strength in a woman was ugliness, that stubbornness was shame, and that every victory with a sword only proved she had failed at something else. Arlan did not need to know every name attached to those memories; the way her shoulders folded whenever the insults returned told him enough.

”Then do not hand those men the judgment yourself.”

Wind moved through the pine crowns above them; around the clearing, FireStorm’s guards checked straps and wounded men while pretending not to listen.

This novel’s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

”A knight’s honor is not a handsome face,” Arlan continued. ”It is not silk, a famous name, or how loudly someone recites courtesy before a tourney. It is whether he keeps faith when breaking it would be easier, and whether he stands where he swore to stand. Whether the weak are safer because he carries steel.”

His gaze dropped briefly to the blood on her armor.

”You were outnumbered, wounded, and surrounded. You still refused to crawl for men who had purchased the right to laugh at you, and Rickard drew a hidden dagger when he could not beat you cleanly. Tell me which of you behaved more like a knight.”

Brienne’s mouth tightened. ”I am not a knight.”

”Neither were half the men calling you unworthy of one.” That earned the smallest change in her expression.

Arlan did not offer to knight her. The power to speak vows over someone did not solve the problem in front of him, and a title given as comfort would have cheapened the very thing she wanted respected.

”Ride as my sworn sword,” he said. ”Your place at FireStorm will depend on what you do there. Not on whether Elton Caron finds you convenient to insult.” For several breaths Brienne stared at him as though waiting for the condition hidden behind the words.

There was none, and she lowered herself to one knee. The movement pulled at her wound, but she did not rise again until the greatsword lay flat across both palms.

”Then hear me, Arlan Ashenblade. By the Seven and by the steel I carry, I will keep faith with you while you keep faith with those under your protection. I will stand between you and your enemies, obey your lawful commands, and not abandon your people for fear of mockery or death.”

Arlan listened closely to the condition she had placed on her service. She would keep faith with him while he kept faith with his people.

Several FireStorm guards lowered their eyes while she spoke; they had watched Brienne hold against hired men while wounded, and whatever doubts they had carried about a woman with a greatsword had become difficult to defend after seeing her use it. Arlan closed one hand around the flat of the greatsword and returned it to her. ”Get up, Brienne of Tarth.” She rose.

”From this night, you ride as my sworn sword.”

The tension in her shoulders did not vanish, but it changed shape, and she looked less like someone preparing to disappear before she became inconvenient. Wayne stepped forward when Arlan turned away from her. ”What about the new ban?”

”You take the main force and the wagons back to FireStorm.”

Wayne’s brows drew together. ”And you?”

”I answer Storm’s End.”

Arlan ordered the holding sealed more tightly than before; Wayne was to reinforce the wall watch, put separate guards on the kiln and distillery, verify every messenger claiming to come from Storm’s End, and admit no unknown armed party simply because it carried a noble banner. The intercepted goods and seized roads made another attempt against the holding likely while its lord was absent.

”Take everyone you can spare,” Wayne said.

”No. FireStorm is the target that cannot move.”

He chose four experienced guards for the ride, and Brienne would make six with him. A larger column would move more slowly, advertise his route, and strip too many trained men from the village.

Half an hour later the wagons turned toward FireStorm under Wayne’s escort while Arlan’s smaller party took a mountain road southeast; the route was rougher than the main road but shorter, and Brienne knew enough of the Red Mountains to keep them from wasting hours at dead gullies and washed-out tracks.

They rode beneath scattered starlight, and the main road would have been easier, but it also passed settlements and patrol posts where news could outrun them. The mountain route demanded more from the horses and offered fewer places to rest; in return it gave Elton fewer witnesses to bribe and fewer gates to close.

Brienne took the front whenever the path narrowed; her horse picked over exposed stone while she watched the tree line rather than the ground, and twice she slowed the column for old tracks that proved harmless. Arlan preferred caution that wasted minutes to confidence that wasted blood, and one of the four guards carried the document case beneath his cloak, while another kept the spare reins and medical roll where either could be reached without unpacking the party.

Near midnight the road narrowed into a pass between steep wooded slopes, and loose stone covered one side, while dense pine and scrub rose above the other. Six riders could pass comfortably; twenty could not. Brienne stopped so suddenly the guard behind her nearly rode into her horse.

Her right hand rose; nobody spoke. Arlan listened, and wind moved high in the trees, but the brush lower on the slope was too still. A horse somewhere ahead gave one short nervous breath and was silenced almost immediately; Brienne looked toward the dark trunks on their left. ”Ambush.” Arlan was already dismounting when the first bowstring snapped, then the forest filled with arrows.
