ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The gallows went up before sunrise, and Arlan had ordered only three ropes prepared. That decision spread through the settlement before dawn and did more to calm the seven lesser conspirators than any guard could; they still faced punishment, but the existence of separate sentences told everyone that the trial had categories before it had begun.

Morton insisted that the charges be written in plain Common Tongue rather than the clipped marks used in his accounts; most people in the square could not read, but those who could were allowed to inspect the list before Wayne read it aloud. Arlan wanted the record to survive the morning rather than depend on memory shaped by grief.

Fresh oak still smelled of cut bark when the first villagers filled the central square, and three ropes hung from the beam. More than two hundred people crowded around the stone platform: farmers with hoes, smiths with burned sleeves, women holding children, guards in leather armor, and refugees who understood that the trial would decide whether FireStorm treated every newcomer as suspect.

Graeme stood beneath the gallows with two accused accomplices; the seven refugees he had recruited but who had not yet opened a gate were held under guard nearby. Arlan waited until the square settled. ”Read it.” Wayne opened the evidence list.

Two witnesses stood beside him for each bundle recovered during the searches. The burned blueprint scraps were wrapped in linen, and the Caron tokens rested in a shallow wooden bowl. The poisoned dagger had been tied inside a leather sheath so no curious hand touched the residue along its edge.

He began with Graeme’s false identity and his access to the livestock sheds between the storehouses and kiln; then he described the patrol records found in the hut, the stolen Red Sun Flame used as accelerant, the Caron insignia, the poisoned dagger, the blueprints, the cut fence, and the plan to open the western approach within three days.

Then he read the statements from the recruited refugees; nobody cheered during that part.

Several of the seven recruited refugees cried openly while their own words were repeated back to the square, and one admitted he had agreed to move a gate bar. Another had promised only to keep quiet if strangers entered; Arlan had them stand where the crowd could see that they were not under the same ropes as Graeme and the two men who had already taken part in active conspiracy.

People listened as they learned how close the holding had come to another attack from inside its own wall. When Wayne finished, a woman near the front threw a stone at Graeme. ”We fed you!” Others shouted with her.

”You slept under our roof!”

”My brother died in the field!” The guards held the crowd back, and Graeme, bruised from the previous day, raised his head and laughed at them.

”Mud farmers. You think one lucky boy changes who rules the marches? Elton Caron is Nightsong; he has knights, roads, coin, and generations behind him. You have a broken wall and burned wheat.” Arlan came down from the platform until he stood directly in front of him.

”And you have a rope.” Graeme’s smile thinned.

”You still believe Elton intended to make you steward?”

”He gave his word.”

”Then tell everyone why a lord who eliminates inconvenient men would preserve the witness who can name every crime committed for him.” Graeme said nothing.

”You know the answer.” His breathing became uneven.

Arlan did not need a confession fabricated through fear; the physical evidence and recovered instructions already established the core acts attributed to Graeme. What mattered now was judgment rather than performance, and he returned to the platform.

”Graeme organized espionage inside FireStorm, aided arson against our food, stole protected plans, participated in murder, and prepared an attack that would have opened this holding to Caron men and Bloodhand raiders.” The square was silent.

”He is sentenced to hang.” Graeme’s head jerked up.

Arlan named the two proven accomplices next, and their rooms had contained contact tokens, weapons, and materials connected to the conspiracy, and witness statements placed them in active participation. ”They are sentenced to hang.” Then came the seven recruited refugees.

”They agreed to Graeme’s plan but had not yet opened the gate, killed anyone, or carried out the attack. Twenty lashes each, and three months of compulsory labor under guard. Their conduct after that will decide whether they remain in FireStorm.”

The distinction quieted some of the anger.

It did not satisfy everyone, and a man whose brother had died in the fields shouted that agreement alone should mean death. Arlan let the objection be heard, then answered that law which changed with grief was not law at all; FireStorm could punish an intended betrayal harshly without pretending an unperformed act was identical to murder.

Wayne understood the practical benefit too; if every person who had spoken to an enemy knew confession guaranteed the rope, future conspirators would fight to the death or hide evidence. Graduated punishment gave frightened accomplices a reason to speak before a plot matured.

A frightened crowd had wanted all suspected people treated as one thing, and Arlan refused to turn that fear into a rule that made evidence irrelevant. The condemned were brought beneath the ropes.

Before the execution, Arlan allowed each of the three condemned men to answer the charges once; the two accomplices begged and blamed Graeme. Graeme alternated between threats and promises that House Caron would reward anyone who freed him, and none produced evidence that changed the acts already proved. Wayne repeated the physical evidence after each denial so the crowd could hear the difference between an excuse and a contradiction supported by hard fact in front of witnesses gathered there.

The responses were recorded anyway, and a hearing that ignored the accused entirely would become difficult to distinguish from the vengeance Arlan had just forbidden the crowd to take for itself. Graeme began shouting that Elton would come for them. When the noose touched his neck, the threats became pleas.

Arlan gave the signal; the boards dropped. Three bodies fell and swung beneath the oak beam, and no one spoke for several breaths.

Children had been kept toward the rear of the square, but some still saw the bodies, and Morton did not look away. Neither did the guards; public execution was meant to be remembered, and there was no honest way to make it clean.

This was the first public execution under Arlan’s rule; it did not restore the grain, rebuild the fields, or return the dead. It established one fact the people inside FireStorm could use: betrayal would be investigated, proved, and punished rather than answered by random vengeance.

Arlan was about to speak again when the watchtower horn sounded once, then again, urgent and continuous; a rider entered the square at speed. Wayne turned before the horse stopped. ”Report.”

”Nightsong army on the road!” The crowd erupted.

”Lord Elton himself. Five hundred men and thirty knights. Ten miles out and coming here.” Morton’s face drained of color; the bodies on the gallows were still moving in the morning wind. Arlan looked toward the gate.

The public trial had ended, and the next judgment would happen at the wall. The guards remained at their posts after the crowd dispersed; the executions had settled one question, but the evidence of outside direction meant FireStorm could not treat the danger as finished.
