ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The warning horn sounded three times from FireStorm’s new watchtower.

Workers abandoned the fields and hurried through the gate while dust rose on the western road. More than three hundred men were coming under the nightingales of House Caron, with ten mounted knights at their head. The force was too large to be mistaken for a patrol and too orderly to be confused with the mountain bands Arlan had spent the previous half month destroying.

Morton reached the wall breathing hard. ”My lord, that’s Gareth Caron. If he has brought so many men after what happened to Raymond, we should move the women and children toward the mountain caves before he closes the road.”

Arlan watched the approaching column instead of answering at once; Storm’s End had given him temporary authority to patrol the southern marches and clear bandits. House Caron could challenge him, obstruct trade, or invent accusations, but openly attacking a landed vassal acting under Renly Baratheon’s warrant would create a different kind of problem.

Gareth’s host was built to frighten FireStorm; whether it had been built to fight was another question. Ten knights gave the column real striking power, and the household troops were nothing like the disordered Blacktooth raiders, but an actual assault would leave bodies, witnesses, and a question for Storm’s End that Elton could not answer with a tax ledger.

”Women and children inside,” Arlan ordered. ”Thirty guards at the gate. Shields forward. Hang the banners we took from the bandit camps where they can be seen. Nobody fires and nobody leaves the wall without my order.”

The commands passed down the line; the guards formed on either side of the entrance with shields overlapping as Arlan had taught them. Captured bandit banners were hung where the approaching column could see that the men before them had already cleared the roads Storm’s End wanted cleared. Thirty men could not stop three hundred in open battle, but they could stand straight long enough to make the difference between a visit and an attack visible to every witness. Farmers returning from the fields were pushed behind the wall rather than allowed to swell the line with hoes and panic.

Arlan descended from the wall and waited outside the gate with Morton.

Gareth Caron arrived in polished plate, riding ahead of the household troops; his horse pawed at the road when he reined in. Behind him, spears rose in ordered ranks and the ten knights spread just enough to make their armor and horses part of the threat.

Gareth looked over FireStorm’s new wall, its watchtower, and the men holding formation behind the gate; his mouth tightened before he smiled.

”So you’re Arlan Ashenblade. I expected more after hearing how many brigands you’ve killed.”

”Ser Gareth.”

”You’ve gathered armed men, taken bandits into your service, and hoarded weapons while disturbing the peace of my father’s border.” Gareth pointed his riding crop toward the gate. ”I am here under Lord Elton’s authority to search this holding. You will surrender the men who have colluded with raiders and come with me to Nightsong for judgment.”

Arlan drew Rolland Florent’s warrant from inside his tunic and held it where Gareth could see the seal.

”Storm’s End has already judged what authority I have to clear these roads. If you have a contrary order from Lord Renly, show it.” Gareth’s expression sharpened. ”Nightsong does not need permission to maintain order in its own marches.”

”FireStorm is not Nightsong.” Arlan kept the parchment raised. ”House Ashenblade holds these lands lawfully beneath the authority of Storm’s End. If you intend to search them by force, produce the warrant that permits it.”

The household troops behind Gareth remained still. Several knights were studying the parchment rather than Arlan’s thirty guards.

Raymond Weil had been taken toward Storm’s End carrying evidence that linked Elton Caron to the Blacktooth raiders and to a manufactured accusation against FireStorm. Gareth could threaten a minor holding, and he could not erase the fact that Renly’s men were now looking at Nightsong; for several breaths neither side moved.

Gareth finally lowered the riding crop.

”Keep your miserable walls, then. I have no need to enter them.” Arlan folded the warrant once but did not put it away.

Gareth turned his horse so the household troops could hear him. ”From this day forward, no merchant of Rainwood is to trade with FireStorm. No grain. No iron. No salt. Anyone who buys from or sells to House Ashenblade makes an enemy of House Caron, and his goods will be seized.”

The order landed harder on some of the people behind the gate than the sight of three hundred spears had. Spears killed the men in front of them; a blockade threatened every child, widow, laborer, and refugee inside the walls, and it could do so while House Caron claimed never to have attacked at all. FireStorm had grown past two hundred inhabitants in weeks; more mouths meant more labor, but it also meant more grain, cloth, salt, iron, tools, and medicine; Rainwood was the nearest market capable of supplying those needs.

Gareth saw the reaction and smiled again.

”Ten days, Ashenblade. Leave the holding while your people still have strength to walk, or stay here and watch them starve.”

He wheeled his horse. The ten knights followed, then the long ranks of household men turned back toward the road. They had come without drawing a sword and left without needing to; only after the last standards disappeared did FireStorm’s guards lower their shields.

Morton stood beside Arlan with a crumpled scrap of accounts in one hand. ”He may not have crossed the gate, but he has done worse. The merchants at Rainwood have traded beneath Nightsong for generations. Most will not risk their stores and families for us.”

The old blacksmith had come from the smithy with his hammer still at his belt. ”We have half a basket of workable iron left. A few hoes, perhaps repairs for some blades. After that, nothing. The mine in the back hills has been abandoned too long to promise us ore, and every nearby ore supply is controlled through Caron lands.”

Around them, the villagers listened in silence; the newcomers who had arrived because FireStorm offered food and protection now understood how easily a stronger lord could attack both without touching a sword. Arlan looked from the blacksmith to Morton.

A blockade worked only if the thing being blocked could not pay people enough to disobey it.

”House Caron can threaten the open road,” he said. ”It cannot abolish greed.” Morton frowned.

”If we make something worth the danger, buyers will find another path.” Arlan turned toward the stone hall.

The rye in FireStorm’s stores was food, but it was also material; oak grew on the slopes; water came from the well. Michael Watson had brought one resource into Westeros that Elton Caron could not confiscate at a checkpoint: knowledge of what those ordinary things could become.

By the time Arlan reached the table inside the hall, charcoal and parchment were already waiting. He began to draw a still, line by line, while the last dust of Gareth’s column settled beyond the road.
