ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

The two wagons left FireStorm before sunrise. Ten barrels of the best Red Sun Flame filled the first. The second carried twenty glass sets wrapped in linen and straw, valuable enough to test Rainwood’s new rules without placing an entire season’s stock inside one trap. The suspect clay jug Gareth had left at FireStorm rode in a padded evidence basket beside Morton’s copied batch book. Wayne chose twenty guards and five riders to scout the road.

Morton remained behind with the workshops, stores, and prisoners’ accounts. ”If they seize both wagons, we learn the law is robbery.”

”We learn that more cheaply than by sending three hundred barrels.”

The road south was emptier than weather justified. Merchants who recognized the Ashenblade banner turned into fields or waited beside hedges until the convoy passed. At the first checkpoint, Caron men recorded the wagon marks, counted the guards, and asked where every barrel had been filled. They did not seize anything.

The second checkpoint repeated the questions and added the names of drivers. A clerk painted a narrow red line across each rear wheel so the wagons could be recognized farther south. Wayne asked whether the mark carried a fee; the clerk pretended not to hear. A board beside the road warned travelers against false Red Sun Flame. The drawing showed a common clay jug with a painted sun rather than FireStorm’s ribbed glass, dark wax, and eight-rayed seal. Nightsong had preserved the poisoning story while omitting the comparison that disproved the bottle’s origin. Arlan had Morton’s batch list carried in an oilskin case; every barrel on the wagon matched a retained sample still locked at FireStorm.

Rainwood’s main gate stood open at noon. Beside it, new scales occupied half the approach, and a low warehouse had been painted with House Caron’s nightingales. Auston Weil waited beneath a canopy with three clerks, thirty armed men, and the expression of someone who preferred arithmetic when it injured another household. ”Arlan Ashenblade. Your cargo is subject to extraordinary assessment, inspection, and bond before entry.”

Arlan looked from the scales to the ten barrels. ”What value are you assessing?”

Auston tapped the blank line beside the total. ”Twenty gold dragons in duty.”

Several merchants waiting behind the convoy stopped complaining about the delay. Twenty dragons exceeded the ready coin of many lesser holdings and had little relationship to ten barrels and twenty sets sold under existing contracts. Arlan handed one clerk copies of those contracts. ”Use the prices Rainwood buyers agreed to pay.”

Auston did not look down. ”Rare goods are assessed at the value they may command, not whatever figure a seller writes with his friends.”

Arlan pointed to the contract copy in the clerk’s hand. ”Then show the schedule used for other rare glass and strong spirits.”

”The schedule is held at Nightsong,” Auston replied, as though distance made the number less arbitrary.

The answer left every number inside the same hand that demanded payment. Arlan asked for a written valuation naming Auston, the rule applied, the cargo count, and who accepted responsibility while the goods remained under Caron seal. Auston smiled. ”You may appeal after surrendering the cargo to lawful storage.”

Arlan glanced toward the newly painted warehouse. ”And if a barrel vanishes while your men hold the key?”

Auston rested one hand on his decorated shortsword. ”The owner bears ordinary loss.”

Stolen from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Wayne looked at the fitted crates behind him. Arlan asked, ”If glass breaks during inspection?”

Auston’s smile widened by a fraction. ”The owner should have packed it properly.”

It was confiscation with enough clerks to produce clean parchment afterward. Wayne’s hand settled near his sword. Arlan kept his own hands visible and called to the merchants waiting beyond the scales. Two already held contracts for FireStorm goods: a tavern supplier named Bennard and a factor who served three coastal inns.

”You have deposits in these wagons,” Arlan said. ”Do you accept Auston’s valuation?”

Bennard looked at the Caron soldiers before answering. ”No.”

The factor took longer. ”If that value is lawful, every duty I paid last year was calculated from false accounts.”

Murmurs moved through the waiting carts. Rainwood merchants survived on invoices, weights, tolls, and debts accepted as real until somebody stronger disliked the result. A valuation that changed only for one seller made every record vulnerable. Three carters began comparing the figures written on their own gate receipts, and a wool merchant demanded to know whether his next cargo could be valued at whatever sum pleased a clerk. Auston ordered the onlookers to keep moving. They could not. The scales and FireStorm wagons blocked the entrance.

Arlan offered terms. The ordinary transit toll would be paid under written protest. The goods would spend one night in the warehouse for inspection, but the doors, wagon count, and individual barrels would carry three seals: Caron, FireStorm, and one held by the buyers whose deposits were already at risk.

Auston glanced at the merchants as though their deposits had no standing. ”The accused does not choose his gaoler.”

Arlan pointed to the contracts in their hands. ”The buyers are not accused. Their coin already purchased part of the cargo.”

Bennard produced his contract. The coastal factor produced a smaller copy bearing Morton’s marks. Neither man wanted to fight House Caron. Both wanted it recorded if Caron officers destroyed what they had paid for. Auston could refuse and seize the wagons by force. He could also accept a count that left him authority to inspect while making quiet loss difficult. The line of delayed merchants ensured either choice had witnesses.

He chose the warehouse. Every barrel was counted before removal. Morton’s batch numbers were copied beside the warehouse entry, and one ribbed bottle from each run remained with Wayne rather than inside the building. The glass crates stayed closed, but their outer seals, weights, and visible packing marks were entered separately. Auston’s clerk pressed black wax over the door latch; Wayne added the Ashenblade sun beside it, and Bennard used the mark of his merchant association as the third seal.

Auston demanded the right to break any barrel seal during inspection. Arlan agreed only if a named clerk opened it before the three witnesses, compared the contents with the retained sample, and sealed the remainder again under all three marks. The counterfeit liquor had taught FireStorm that an opened vessel without a record could become whatever an enemy poured into it afterward. The process consumed four hours, two feed bags, and most of the daylight.

FireStorm paid the ordinary toll and a smaller storage charge written on the same page as the protest. Auston refused to cancel the extraordinary assessment; he recorded it as disputed and gave Arlan ten days to appeal at Nightsong. ”Your goods may enter after inspection,” he said. ”No merchant is required to buy them.”

Arlan looked at the marks drying on the wheels. ”That was true before you found a red brush.”

Auston’s mouth tightened. He ordered the wagons rolled inside without their cargo. Caron soldiers watched the wheels pass beneath the gate, while clerks wrote the names of Bennard, the coastal factor, both drivers, and every FireStorm guard. Rainwood remained open around them. Shops traded with ordinary customers. Smiths worked. Stable hands crossed the street carrying feed. Whenever Arlan’s party approached, doors closed or conversations found quieter voices. Harlan’s house had two armed men outside and a nightingale seal across the entrance.

Wayne looked back toward the warehouse, where four different guards now watched the sealed door. ”We entered.”

Arlan checked the receipt folded inside his glove. ”The cargo did not.”

Wayne nodded toward the nightingale seal across Harlan’s door. ”And Harlan is still inside a locked house.”

The legal road had not been closed. Nightsong had filled it with scales, storage, disputed values, painted wheels, and names copied for later use. Each delay also cost fodder, guards’ time, warehouse coin, and another day before merchants could move the goods they had already purchased. Arlan led the empty wagons toward the center of Rainwood. Every merchant who avoided him already knew exactly where Caron clerks could find his door.
