ASOIAF: The Rise of House Ashenblade.

Several days after the renewed blockade, Elton Caron set the silver cup down so gently that the movement drew more attention than a blow would have, and the messenger remained kneeling in the middle of the hall while Gareth stared at him as if the man had personally betrayed the family. ”Explain,” Elton said.

”Harlan found foreign merchants willing to deal outside Rainwood’s ordinary routes. Braavosi ships brought rye, oats, seed, iron, and herbs, and the first loads reached FireStorm last night. Enough grain for more than two hundred mouths for months.”

A murmur moved among the retainers; Elton’s gaze cut across them and the hall fell quiet again. ”And the glass?”

”Moving through the same channels. Some has reached Storm’s End; the clear cups and wine sets are selling for several gold dragons. Their strong liquor is moving too.”

Gareth stood so quickly his chair scraped stone. ”Impossible. Rainwood’s roads are watched. Harlan’s house is watched.”

”The Braavosi carry foreign charters,” the messenger said. ”Their cargo changes hands before it reaches the roads we control directly. Harlan acts as broker. Merchants keep trying because the profit is high enough.” Elton leaned back and looked at his son.

”Sit down.”

”Father—”

”Sit.” Gareth obeyed.

The boy at FireStorm had found a way around the closed market. Elton rested two fingers on the border map. The next blockade would have to reach farther, and farther meant more men and coin.

”A few profitable cups do not make House Ashenblade our equal. FireStorm has no deep granaries, no great levy, no marriage network, no old debts owed by half the marches, and coin without access is metal. We close access.”

For decades, House Caron had survived on more than walls and swords; lesser holdings used Nightsong roads, paid its tolls, bought iron through merchants who preferred not to anger it, and depended on its riders when the marches became dangerous. Elton did not need every man to love him. He needed enough people to calculate that disobedience cost more than compliance. FireStorm had begun disturbing that calculation.

He began issuing orders, and no lord, landed knight, or merchant dependent on Nightsong was to sell grain, iron, salt, or cloth to FireStorm. Rainwood patrols would inspect cargo aggressively; Ashenblade liquor and glass moving through controlled roads would be seized under anti-smuggling authority.

One knight frowned. ”Storm’s End may object if the order is written too plainly.”

”Then don’t write hunger on the parchment,” Elton said. ”Write inspections. Write transit dues, and write border security. Men with quills have disguised knives for longer than either of us has lived.” A few retainers smiled.

”And send word to the Bloodhand clan. Food, steel, and access to border trade if they harass FireStorm’s fields and roads; they need not win a glorious battle. They only need to make the holding expensive to defend.”

Gareth’s satisfaction returned. ”That will bleed him.”

”It will divide him. That is better.”

At FireStorm, the wagons had answered the burned storehouse the night before.

Morton counted sacks as they passed beneath the gate, and rye filled the largest carts. Oats followed, then seed grain, wrought iron wrapped against rain, bundles of herbs, and several crates of tools that Rainwood sellers had become too frightened to provide openly.

The villagers watched every load as though coin itself were being stacked inside the new storehouse; for people who had recently watched months of food turn to ash, grain was better than coin.

Harlan stood beneath the eaves with Arlan and watched Wayne’s men check seals and wheel ruts before allowing each wagon deeper into the holding.

”Braavosi don’t care who Lord Elton is,” Harlan said. ”They care whether a contract clears and whether anyone is foolish enough to seize foreign cargo where witnesses can see it.”

”They care about profit.”

”A dependable virtue.”

The route cost more than Rainwood, but glass absorbed much of the difference; buyers at Storm’s End were already asking for additional clear pieces, while Harlan had brought a draft arrangement from foreign merchants willing to pay above the local price for cargo they could carry elsewhere.

The arrangement was inelegant; goods moved in smaller lots, changed hands more than once, and sometimes traveled farther than the direct road would have required. Every transfer created another fee and another person capable of betraying the route, and it remained preferable to allowing one marcher lord to decide whether FireStorm was permitted to eat.

Arlan read each clause twice before signing, and foreign trade did not solve every problem. Ships could be delayed; brokers could be bribed. Coin moved through enough hands that losses accumulated before goods reached FireStorm, but a route Elton did not control directly forced Nightsong to spend influence beyond its strongest ground.

That was useful.

Harlan also reported that FireStorm’s glass had become fashionable enough in Storm’s End for buyers to reserve pieces before the next firing; Red Sun Flame moved more steadily among soldiers, caravans, and taverns, while glass drew nobles willing to pay far more for novelty. The two products reached different buyers, which made a single blockade harder to enforce.

Wayne entered while the ink was still wet.

”My lord. Our contacts say Nightsong has sent notices across the southern marches, and no one is to sell us grain or iron. Rainwood patrols have doubled.”

”Expected.”

”There’s more. A Caron man met Bloodhand raiders near the mountains two nights ago.” Arlan capped the ink.

Elton’s sequence was now plain; hunger if trade failed. Raids if hunger failed, and all of it deniable enough to keep Storm’s End from receiving one clean offense instead of a dozen suspicious ones.

”Increase the northern scouts,” Arlan said. ”No worker goes alone beyond sight of the walls.”

Harlan folded his copy of the contract. ”I can keep the coast route moving, but if Nightsong starts searching every cart between here and Rainwood, prices rise.”

”Then raise them where the market will bear it.”

The merchant grinned. ”Now you sound civilized.” A rider arrived before Arlan could answer; mud covered the man’s cloak to the shoulders, but the seal on the parchment tube was clean and unmistakable. Storm’s End. Morton came from the unloading yard and stood beside Arlan while he broke the seal.

The message summoned Arlan to appear before Lord Renly Baratheon and report personally on the raids, the accusations moving between FireStorm and Nightsong, and the condition of the southern border, and Wayne looked north rather than at the parchment. ”Convenient.”

Morton read over Arlan’s shoulder. ”You cannot ignore a summons from Storm’s End.”

”I won’t.”

”Then when do you leave?” Arlan folded the message once.

”After we know what Bloodhand is doing.”

The summons was dangerous only if he obeyed it blindly, and Elton wanted FireStorm divided between the duty to answer Storm’s End and the need to defend itself. Arlan would not give him both advantages at once; outside the hall, another wagon rolled under the gate with grain purchased beyond the Narrow Sea.

For the moment, FireStorm had food; the next attack would aim at something else. Arlan had no reason to assume Elton would repeat a failed method when the man had already shown a preference for changing tools again.

The account books remained open on the table after the meeting, and grain, iron, and seed were secure for the moment, but every figure depended on keeping the foreign route alive.
