50 Chapter 50: The Memory That Wasn’t His 2026-10-25

Rin did not tell anyone about the conversation with the God.

Not immediately. He wasn’t sure why, perhaps because the conversation had felt strangely private.

Perhaps because, for the first time, he had seen the God not as an enemy, but as the lonely child he had once protected. Or perhaps because there was something about the conversation that bothered him.

Something he couldn’t quite name. Rin sat at the edge of his bed, staring at the window.

The sunrise had already begun. The room was quiet. Too quiet.

He reached into the drawer beside his bed. His fingers touched paper.

Rin pulled it out. The letter. The one he had received several days ago. The one that had contained only a few words.

DO NOT TRUST THE SYSTEM.

He had almost forgotten about it. Almost. Rin unfolded the paper again. Nothing had changed.

No signature. No explanation. Just the warning.

He read it again. Then again.

”Why?”

He whispered. Why would someone tell him not to trust Sol?

Sol had saved him countless times. Sol had followed him through timelines. Sol had even sacrificed his own existence to remain beside him.

The warning made no sense.

Unless...

Rin’s eyes narrowed. Maybe that was exactly why it had been written.

Someone wanted him to doubt Sol. Someone wanted him to distrust the one person who had never asked him to remember anything.

Rin folded the letter. Then stopped. Something was wrong. A faint sound echoed in his head.

Ding.

Rin froze.

He looked around. Nothing. The room was empty.

Another sound.

Ding.

Rin’s heart began beating faster. He had heard that sound before many times but never like this.

A memory surfaced there was a golden temple.

His former self standing before someone. A person speaking that was a lie.

And then—

Ding.

Rin’s eyes widened.

”That’s it.”

He whispered.

”The bell.”

Something inside his mind had awakened. Not a System notification.

A memory, a divine ability one of his original powers.

The ability to hear lies. Not every lie. Not every secret.

Only when someone deliberately spoke something false directly to him and the sound wasn’t audible to anyone else.

Only him. Rin sat completely still.

”That’s...”

He swallowed.

”Useful.”

Then his smile disappeared. Because if he was remembering correctly...the bell had been ringing far more often than he had realized.

The first sound came from the God.

Rin closed his eyes.

Their conversation replayed in his mind.

I didn’t create the curse.

Ding.

Rin’s eyes snapped open.

”No.”

He stood. The memory replayed.

The God had said:

I didn’t create the curse.

Ding.

Rin’s breathing stopped.

”But he said he didn’t.”

Another memory.

I found it.

No sound.

Rin frowned. The difference was important.

The God hadn’t lied about finding the curse. He had lied about something else. Rin replayed the conversation carefully.

I activated the curse.

No bell.

I was trying to save you.

No bell.

I brought your soul here because this was the only place I could hide you.

No bell.

Rin’s expression softened. Those parts had been true. Then what had been the lie?

He remembered the exact moment.

The God had said:

”I didn’t create the curse.”

Ding.

Rin’s stomach tightened.

”But maybe...”

He slowly sat down.

”He didn’t create it.”

The bell had sounded because there was something missing from the sentence.

A lie could be incomplete not every lie had to be completely false.

Maybe the God hadn’t created the curse but he had something to do with it.

Something he hadn’t admitted. Rin looked at the letter.

DO NOT TRUST THE SYSTEM.

He whispered:

”Whoever wrote this knew.”

Another thought came. The God had also told him:

”I never hated you.”

No bell.

Rin stared at the floor. That was true but then came another sentence.

”I wasn’t trying to control you.”

Silence.

No bell.

Rin frowned.

That was strange. Because his actions had been controlling.

Maybe the God genuinely believed he wasn’t controlling him perhaps he had convinced himself that everything he did was protection but there was something else.

The God had said:

”I was afraid of losing you.”

No bell.

Rin remembered his expression. That part had been true.

Too true. The God had been jealous. Obsessive. Terrified that someone else would take Rin away. Someone.

Rin’s eyes widened.

”Someone else.”

The words suddenly connected. The God hadn’t merely feared the curse.

He had feared who Rin might choose.

Rin remembered his father’s warning. The God had tried to seal his soul. Not only to protect him but because he was afraid Rin would leave.

Afraid that someone else would keep him.

Rin whispered:

”He didn’t want me to return.”

His stomach twisted.

”He wanted me to stay.”

The God had loved Rin once protected but somewhere along the way, that love had become possession and perhaps that was the truth the God still couldn’t admit.

A knock came at the door.

Rin quickly hid the letter.

”Come in.”

Sol entered. He immediately looked at Rin.

”You look terrible.”

”Good morning to you too.”

”Did you sleep?”

”Not really.”

Sol frowned.

”Nightmares?”

”No.”

”Memories?”

”Maybe.”

Sol sat beside him.

”Do you want to tell me?”

Rin hesitated. He looked at his brother. Then remembered the letter.

DO NOT TRUST THE SYSTEM.

He almost laughed.

Of all the people he could doubt... Sol was the one person he couldn’t.

”You know what?”

”What?”

”I think you’re the only person who hasn’t lied to me.”

Sol blinked.

”That’s a strange thing to say.”

”I know.”

Sol studied him.

”Why?”

Rin looked at him.

”I think one of my divine abilities is coming back.”

Sol immediately became serious.

”What ability?”

”I can hear lies.”

Sol’s eyebrows rose.

”Literally?”

”There’s a bell.”

”A bell?”

”When someone lies directly to me.”

”Can you tell when someone lies to someone else?”

”I don’t think so.”

”Can you control it?”

”I don’t know.”

Sol smiled.

”That’s actually incredibly useful.”

”That’s what I thought.”

Rin paused.

”There’s a problem.”

”What?”

”I think people have been lying to me for a long time.”

Sol’s expression darkened.

”Who?”

”I don’t know yet.”

”Then we’ll find out.”

Rin looked at him.

”You say that very confidently.”

”I’m your System.”

Rin smiled.

”Not anymore.”

Sol looked at him.

”What?”

”You said yourself that you’re becoming something beyond the System.”

Sol’s expression softened.

”Maybe.”

Rin reached over and flicked his forehead.

”You’re still my little brother.”

Sol rubbed his forehead.

”Violence. Wonderful.”

Rin laughed. For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then—

Ding.

Rin froze. He stared at Sol. Sol blinked.

”What?”

Rin’s heart dropped.

”Say that again.”

”What?”

”You’re still my brother.”

Sol looked confused.

”Yes.”

No sound.

Rin exhaled.

”Nothing.”

Sol narrowed his eyes.

”You tested me.”

”Maybe.”

”Rude.”

Rin smiled.

”But you passed.”

Sol sighed.

”Glad to be of service.”

Later, Rin found Kaelith training alone. The demon general moved with controlled precision.

Every strike was clean. Every movement deliberate. Rin watched from a distance.

Kaelith noticed him almost immediately.

”You’re staring.”

Rin smiled.

”You’re difficult to sneak up on.”

”Occupational requirement.”

Rin walked closer.

”Can I ask you something?”

”Yes.”

”Have you ever lied to me?”

Kaelith stopped.

He lowered his sword.

”Yes.”

Rin wasn’t expecting that. There was no bell. He stared.

”When?”

Kaelith thought for a moment.

”When you asked if I was afraid for you.”

Rin frowned.

”You said you weren’t.”

”I was.”

No bell.

Rin’s expression softened.

”Why did you lie?”

”Because I didn’t want you to worry.”

Rin looked down.

”So you were protecting me.”

”Yes.”

”That wasn’t exactly a lie.”

Kaelith raised an eyebrow.

”You asked whether I was afraid.”

”And you were.”

”Yes.”

Rin smiled.

”Then the ability works.”

”What ability?”

Rin explained. Kaelith listened carefully.

When he finished, the General was quiet.

”Then you should be careful.”

”Why?”

”Because people can lie without speaking.”

Rin frowned.

”How?”

”By omission.”

Rin looked at him.

”That’s what the God did.”

Kaelith nodded.

”Perhaps.”

Rin hesitated.

”Do you think he lied to me?”

Kaelith didn’t immediately answer.

Rin waited. Finally, Kaelith said:

”I think he told you what he believed you needed to hear.”

Rin frowned.

”That’s not the same as telling the truth.”

”No.”

Kaelith looked at him.

”And it isn’t always the same as lying.”

Rin considered that.

”You really like complicated answers.”

”I’m a General.”

”That’s not an explanation.”

”It is to me.”

Rin laughed.

Then he noticed something. Kaelith had been holding his left hand strangely.

”You’re injured.”

”No.”

Ding.

Rin froze. Kaelith looked at him.

”What?”

Rin stared at his hand.

”You lied.”

Kaelith’s expression changed. He sighed.

”It’s nothing serious.”

Ding.

Rin crossed his arms.

”Kaelith.”

The General looked away.

”I injured it during training.”

Ding.

Rin stared.

”You keep lying.”

Kaelith finally looked at him.

”Because you’ll worry.”

”Yes.”

”And because I don’t want you involved.”

”Too late.”

Rin took his hand. Kaelith froze. Rin carefully examined the injury. It wasn’t severe, but it was deeper than Kaelith had admitted.

”You could have told me.”

”I know.”

Rin looked up.

”Don’t do that again.”

Kaelith’s expression softened.

”All right.”

No bell. Rin smiled.

”Good.”

Kaelith looked at their hands. Rin realized he was still holding his.

He slowly let go. Neither mentioned it but something had changed.

Something small. Something warm. Something Rin wasn’t ready to name.

That evening, Rin returned to his room. He placed the letter on the table. The words seemed different now.

DO NOT TRUST THE SYSTEM.

Rin stared at them.

Then another possibility occurred to him. What if the letter wasn’t warning him about Sol?

What if it was warning him about the System itself?

Not Sol. The mechanism, the rules, the information, the messages that had appeared throughout every timeline.

Rin sat down.

”Sol.”

His brother appeared almost instantly.

”Yes?”

”Can you show me every System notification I’ve ever received?”

Sol frowned.

”That’s a lot.”

”All of them.”

”That’s going to take a while.”

”I don’t care.”

Sol hesitated.

”Are you sure?”

Rin nodded. A massive wall of System messages appeared.

Thousands. Rin stared. So many.

Warnings, missions, predictions, death probabilities, emotional analyses, probability calculations.

He started reading. Most were ordinary. Then he noticed something.

A pattern. Every time the System predicted Rin’s death...the prediction was wrong.

Not once. Not twice. Almost every time.

Rin frowned.

”Sol.”

”Yes?”

”Why are the death probabilities always inaccurate?”

Sol looked at the data.

”I don’t know.”

Rin kept reading. Then he found something else.

[FUTURE CALCULATION: 92%]

Later:

[FUTURE CALCULATION: 71%]

Later:

[FUTURE CANNOT BE CALCULATED.]

And then—

[NEW VARIABLE ACCEPTED.]

Rin’s eyes widened.

”The System wasn’t predicting my future.”

Sol looked at him.

”What?”

”It was predicting what the curse expected.”

Silence. Sol’s expression changed.

”That would mean...”

”The System wasn’t always wrong.”

Rin pointed at the screen.

”It was being fed false information.”

Sol stared.

”By the curse?”

”Maybe.”

Rin looked at the letter.

”Or by whoever created it.”

The room became quiet.

Then—

Ding.

Rin froze.

Someone was standing outside the door. He could hear footsteps.

A knock.

”Rin?”

Noctis. Rin opened the door. Noctis stood outside.

”Can I come in?”

”Of course.”

Noctis entered. Rin watched him carefully.

”Did you know about the letter?”

Noctis paused.

”No.”

No bell.

Rin relaxed.

”Did you know someone warned me not to trust the System?”

Noctis looked surprised.

”No.”

No bell.

”Did you ever lie to me about my past?”

Noctis remained silent. Rin waited.

Finally:

”Yes.”

No bell.

Rin blinked.

”When?”

Noctis looked toward the window.

”There are memories I didn’t tell you.”

”Why?”

”Because they weren’t mine to give.”

Rin nodded slowly.

”Did you know I was going to remember them eventually?”

”Yes.”

No bell.

”Did you know about the curse?”

”Yes.”

No bell.

”Did you know who created it?”

Noctis’s expression changed.

”No.”

No bell.

Rin stared at him. Then he understood. Noctis had hidden things. But he hadn’t lied.

There was a difference. Rin smiled faintly.

”Thank you.”

Noctis looked confused.

”For what?”

”For being honest.”

Noctis nodded.

”You deserve the truth.”

Rin looked at the letter.

”Apparently that’s rarer than I thought.”

Noctis’s expression became serious.

”Rin.”

”What?”

”Be careful.”

”Of what?”

”Everyone.”

Rin looked at him.

”Even you?”

Noctis smiled.

”Especially me.”

Rin laughed softly.

”I’ll remember that.”

Noctis left. Rin remained alone. He looked at the three people he now knew had answered him honestly.

Sol. Kaelith. Noctis.

But even that wasn’t enough. Because there were still too many people around him whose words he couldn’t verify.

His mother. Eryon. The God. The World. The Keeper. His father.

And perhaps... the System itself.

Rin looked at the final message glowing before him.

[SYSTEM CORE: PARTIALLY RESTORED.]

He whispered:

”Tell me something.”

The screen remained silent.

”Who wrote the letter?”

Nothing.

Rin smiled faintly.

”Fine.”

He picked up the letter.

”But I’ll find out.”

The room darkened. And then, for the first time, a tiny silver bell appeared inside the System interface.

[DING.]

Rin froze.

He stared at it. The System had never produced that sound before. Then words appeared.

[WARNING.]

[THE PREVIOUS MESSAGE WAS ALTERED.]

Rin’s blood turned cold.

”Which message?”

The answer appeared slowly.

[THE LETTER.]

Rin stared.

The words on the paper began changing. The original sentence faded. New words appeared underneath.

Not:

DO NOT TRUST THE SYSTEM.

But:

DO NOT TRUST WHAT THE SYSTEM TELLS YOU.

Rin’s breath stopped. There was a difference. A very important one.

The letter had never told him not to trust Sol.

It had warned him not to trust the information being given to him.

Rin slowly looked toward the System.

For the first time...the interface didn’t feel like a tool.

It felt like a witness.

And perhaps...someone had been trying to warn him from the beginning.

Not that Sol was lying but that the System had been forced to lie for him.

Rin whispered:

”Whoever you are...”

The silver bell sounded once more.

Ding.

And somewhere deep inside his returning divine power, another memory began to awaken.

A voice. His own. Speaking to someone he couldn’t see.

”If they ever make me forget...”

A pause.

”...don’t tell me the truth.”

Rin’s eyes widened.

”Why would I say that?”

The memory answered.

”Because if I remember too early...”

The voice became frightened.

”...they’ll know I’m awake.”

The vision vanished.

Rin stood completely still. For the first time, he understood his forgotten memories hadn’t simply been sealed.

Some of them had been hidden deliberately.

By someone who had once known exactly what was coming and perhaps the greatest mystery wasn’t who had cursed him.

It was this:

What had Rin known before he died that was so dangerous that even his own past self had chosen to hide it from him?
